John Scalzi, political pundit

McRapey analyzes the Republican National Convention. Incompetence ensues.
The convention, generally, was the worst-run major political convention in a generation, and that should scare you. How is Trump going to manage an entire country when he can’t even put on a four-day show? (The answer, as we found out this week, is that he has no intention of managing the country at all; he plans to foist the actual work onto his poor VP while he struts about as bloviating figurehead.) Trump lost control of his convention and his message twice, once with Melania Trump’s clumsy plagiarism of Michelle Obama, which ate up two days of news cycles before Trump’s people found someone to be their chump for it, and then second with Ted Cruz, that oleaginous lump of hungering self-interest, who rather breathtakingly took to the stage of a nominating convention in order not to endorse Trump, in the most public way possible. That bit of low-rent Machiavellianism ate up another day of news cycles.

In the end, all the GOP convention has coming out of it are two massive failures of message control and Trump’s cataclysmic nomination speech.
And Nate Silver of 538 observing that Trump's chances of winning the election have rising 40 points from a month ago. And Mr. Trump taking the lead in several national polls, including those from CNN and the LA Times. But while we're on the subject of badly-run conventions, have we ever seen a national party chairman resign the day before the start of the convention?

Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Scalzi?
But that’s the Trump shtick: He doesn’t have policies or positions or plans
No, no positions at all. And who could possibly know what his policies on tax reform, healthcare reform, immigration, foreign policy, and trade could be? Of course, one should keep in mind that John Scalzi is an SJW, and what is it that SJWs always do? I seem to recall someone wrote a book about that.
Trump is still not likely to win — after everything, he’s still trailing Clinton.
Only in the polls taken a month ago. He's doing rather well in the new ones, so much so that the media is now attempting to discount the very sort of "convention bounce" that we were previously told doesn't exist anymore.

However, the best dismissal of John Scalzi's worst attempt to engage in political punditry since his famous "I'm a rapist" post is from a Hillary Clinton supporter, who notes a certain irony about McRapey's attack on the Republican candidate for President.

In a post about how Donald Trump’s modus operandi is to scare people into voting for him, I count *ten* instances where you tell us that Trump (and the Republican party more broadly) should scare/terrify us, that they’re dangerous, that they’ll bring disaster/tragedy to the country, and so forth.

Let's see, the party chair was booed off the stage, won't open the convention, the Cruz delegates boo Trump's name and chant ''lock him up!'', ticks off a major (and famous) supporter, and CNN suspend a journalist.
And all before the convention began. Oh wait...
Why be a hack writing bad fiction?

Scalzi is actually peddling the narrative that Hilary is just this poor little lady that happens to have all of these questionable circumstances surrounding her. She was in charge of the Department of State but you see nothing that happened there was her fault. She was a victim of the department she ran.

Spinning that story is toeing a dangerous line. It suggests that women do not have agency and are incapable of competently running an organization. Keep running with that story and some rainbow hair is going to eventually decide it is time to get rid of you.

@17

"What's next for the Left?"

Think of the Left as the parasitical aliens from STARGATE, who build nothing themselves, merely take over host bodies.

The Left will abandon their current party line, and adopt one that on the surface sounds more conservative, and use that as a platform to criticize and undermine some aspect of Western Civilization the conservatives are unable or unwilling to defend vigorously.

I say this only because, since the French Revolution, this has been exactly their method. They take some aspect of Christendom, such as the scientific method, or concern for the poor, or the innate equality of man, and create and exaggerated funhouse pantomime of the concept, usually the diametric opposite of the concept it is mocking, and use the clown version of the concept to bludgeon all other concepts needed for Western Civilization. So, in the French Revolution, Liberty and Fraternity was clownpainted into meaning the terror and the guillotine, in the Russian Revolution, concern for the poor meant killing the rich and starving the Ukrainians and a hundred million dead, and in the Sexual Revolution freedom for women meant turning all ladies into slatterns, whores and drudges. Equality means anti-White. And on and on.

It is hard for me to imagine where in particular the next attack will come, because I frankly cannot imagine anything more nakedly evil than supporting Islam, but they will find something along those lines to support.

Democrats don't understand the virtue of having fights, getting them out of your system, coming to consensus, and moving on. So we get the Democratic party this year; doing things secretly, in secret emails, doing all they can to look good on the surface while disenfranchising everybody but the party elite, all the while congratulating themselves on how much better they look than those nasty Republicans.

Whited sepulchres are much prettier for a while, until the insides can no longer be contained.

Trump has basically zero interest in his functions as a president, let alone in "managing" anything in the case of his highly unlikely victory.

Proof: According to Kasich, Trump's people were offering potential VPs total control over foreign and domestic policy (!!!).

When asked what Trump would do during a presidency if he didn't handle foreign and domestic policy, his son replied thusly: "Make America Great Again." So, yeah, basically, Trump just wants to be king, not president. He'll do interviews and use the title to build his businesses, while the VP does all the ACTUAL work. This squares with what Manafort has said in the past about needing to find a VP to do all the stuff that Trump doesn't want to do - which, apparently, is EVERYTHING.

Furthermore, when Trump was asked what the main point that he wants people to take away from the convention is, he didn't say "That we need to make America great again" or that "Hillary is too dangerous to be president" or "We need to unite to X or Y goal" or anything like that.
Instead, he said he wants people to realize “The fact that I’m very well liked.”

Trump in a nutshell! This whole candidacy thing is about his own ego, and to a lesser extent his business. Nothing more.

exactly.

possibly the single most intrinsic requirement of kayfabe is the 'Heel'. the 'Face' can be almost irrelevant so long as the crowd hates the the Heel.

Trump ( likely ) predicted / allowed ( i'm sure there was preplanned coordination with the NY delegation to start chanting if it appeared that Cruz was going to try to weasle on his "Support the nominee" oath ) Cruz to TURN HIMSELF into the Heel.

this doesn't require Cruz to be 'in' on the kayfabe game, it merely requires Trump to be aware of kayfabe and to prime a few pumps.

you let Cruz go speak.

Cruz does the honorable thing and gives his endorsement, thereby keeping his word, there is no Heel and no drama. possible rapprochement, a truce at worst.

all other outcomes mean that Cruz has beclowned himself.

As for the Republican Convention, I thought most all of the speakers did a good job and things flowed. Melanie did a great job and looked fabulous. Scalzi must have found that intimidating, maybe threatening? As for Cruz' idiocy, Trump was right, if Trump had prevented him from speaking, Trump would have been the bad guy. By letting Cruz speak, Cruz hit himself out of the ballpark... and we are not playing baseball.

So Scalzi misread the convention. It was successful, at times fun for middle America (Duck Dynasty, Sheriff Joe, etc.) and The Donald gave a 75 minute speech that was watchable, showed he cared about issues and loves the American people.

Scalzi, intimidated by beauty, unable to deal with challengers, frustrated by success, so sad.

- Brian Greenberg

Good catch! Now we have some numbers to work with. It belongs in a textbook on Quantification Principles of SJW Projection or something. This is no mere double down, it's an order of magnitude load of noxious SJW projection.

It's funny. I wanted to hate Trump, because it is less dangerous these days to be found hating him, and because of his reality TV show. Ye gods do I loathe most of those. Celebrity politics really gets under my skin. Also, in his previous political life, such that it was, he didn't seem terribly conservative. His positions were very moderate, overall.

But I can't hate him. I find myself watching his speeches, disagreeing with nearly half of what he says, and yet smiling nonetheless. I legitimately want this man to win the Presidency even though I should be much more wary of him.

It is almost certainly because Trump is an Alpha. He has a natural affinity for leadership, he knows how to work a room and get those of us of lesser rank to follow him. All except for Gammas like Scalzi, of course. As you have pointed out frequently, Gammas instinctively loathe Alphas.

On a personal note, this may be objective evidence that I am no longer Gamma in my mindset. I want to follow the natural leaders, not tear them apart.

Anyway, point being, Scalzi uses a Gamma tactic I'm very familiar with. He wants every single detail of every policy mapped out so that he can sit around and pick it apart. Alphas like Trump don't work that way. They trust their own ability to change direction, to fail quickly, learn from it, and eventually find something that succeeds. Trump tells us he will build a wall. He need not sit around and have a thirty-point plan about exactly how he will achieve this in every trivial detail.

He need only say that he will build the wall, and then do it.

Scalzi can't trust this, because Scalzi thinks he is smarter than Trump. He wants to see every detail mapped out so his Gamma brain can sit around poking holes in it without, I should note, adding anything constructive to the conversation himself. Gammas love to say "you're wrong!"

So what Scalzi is really complaining about is that Trump is not playing according to Gamma rules, such as they are. When he attacks Melania's speech in the quote above, he likely realizes fully that she didn't write the speech, and was unaware of any plagiarism in it. And for that matter, Michelle Obama likely didn't write hers either. But it doesn't matter to him. He found a flaw, and now he must relentlessly pick it apart.

Scalzi is the sort of process whore who is endlessly fixated on details without a whit of understanding about the bigger picture. Unless something is 100% perfect, it is 100% wrong. At least, if you're disagreeing with him, anyway. He wouldn't apply such standards to himself.

I saw an article in my local newspaper the other day that described Trump's policy documents on his website as being "seven pages of content" as opposed to Hillary's "forty pages of content." Scalzi is the type of imbecile to turn around and say that because Hillary has more text, she's better.

It's just another way that he has proven himself to be a midwit, a Gamma, and an overall loser no matter how much fame and financial success he can squeeze out of the Torlocks.

Blogger Human Animal July 25, 2016 7:24 PM

@116, in the Alabama speech, where Trump really talks about building the wall, he gets specific. He mentions a particular product that his crews used on construction sites. I wish I could remember exactly what it was. My husband used to work for a company that builds bridges. When he talks about bridges, he gets this look in his eyes and I know he's remembering the details of that project. Trump had the same look when he was describing building the wall. I knew at that point that he really could do it.

Exactly. Which is why when I see him spending the first day as the nominee advocating for the National Enquirer's PIulitzer I wonder what the bigger gameplan is. It's probably more intuition that sometimes involves weird nonfatal moments like that rather than a master strategy plotting out every single detailed action. And....that's probably why people who can't see big picture get so confused by his success. They get wrapped up in the odd details rather than seeing the high-level intuitive genius at work.

DEMOCRATS: Hey, we've got an idea, let's destroy America!
GOP CUCKS/PUKES: That's a great idea. Just, let's kill America slowly instead of quickly!
TRUMP: I've got an even better idea. Let's bring America back to life, and make it freaking amazing!

CUE BLACK SABBATH'S "IRON MAN"

As bad as Trump's logo is (and beleeeve me, it's terrible), Hitlery's is a million times worse. I have a friend who once said "everything that's stupid about American culture can ultimately be traced back to the word 'workshop'." Hitlery's logo is Exhibit A. Unfortunately, Trump's logo is Exhibit B. But he was really doing brilliantly with the optics for a very long time. Maybe he'll recover his senses, give Mike Pence a nice job as the warden of a women's prison, make him go away, hire a freaking mafia capo to help him do the job, and get back on track.

People are always picking tacky theme songs as their campaign song.

Trump should just come out and do it, and select "You Should Never Have Opened That Door" by the Ramones, with Johnny's insane guitar style...

"You don't know what I could do with this axe:
Chop off your head, so you better relax!"

Now THAT's a campaign slogan. And it's the one people actually want to hear.

That's the ultimate appeal of the Trumpernaut, is that sheer animal energy.

In 2008, Obama beats McCain (really he beat Sarah Palin, but only with the full-on assistance of the most vicious leftist/media attack I've ever seen; if we could get her a brain transplant from Trey Gowdy she'd be dictator for life), because everybody was sick and tired of the stupid-sounding, ill-spoken, war-mongering, neo-cohen white guy, and it sounded like the cool hipster black guy making loud, predictably stupid prophet-sounding black guy noises would be a relief. But then he turned out to be a stupid-sounding, war-mongering neo-cohen too, but everybody agreed not to notice, because raaaaciss.

In 2012, Obama wins again because Romney ran a case-book study campaign in how to be a stupid, limp-wristed cuck.

Now the worm has turned, and we see Trump understanding that the way to win is to actually want to win. I have limited patience for all this alpha beta gamma delta taxonomy, but Trump really does what you folks like to call alpha game rather well.

"You don't know what I could do with this axe;
Chop off your head, so you better relax!"

It just gets even weirder to contemplate, when you consider who --or maybe a better word is 'what'-- the Dems are putting forward, and witch has a reasonable chance of winning. (Well, those chances can be debated, but the fact she's even being taken seriously is what's disturbing.)

Kasich cannot be considered a reliable source.

it's worse than that.

Kasich has no practical foreign policy experience whatsoever.

Kasich has no great credentials to present for domestic policy. Ohio is ranked middle of the pack for 2015 and the marijuana initiative was completely botched when he permitted the bill to be written by a 1/2 dozen powerful Ohio families as a legal monopoly for themselves.
http://www.businessinsider.com/state-economy-ranking-july-2015-2015-7

Kasich ran a buffoonish and lackluster presidential campaign, barely carrying his own state and failing to exceed Narco Lubio's delegate count ( 165 ) even though Kasich ( 161 ) ran all the way to the end while foam cannon boy withdrew clear back in the middle of March.

the only reason that Trump would have even bothered dealing with Kasich at all would have been to try to get Kasich to stump Ohio for him ...

you seriously think Trump is going to turn over the keys to his putative administration simply for that?

there are easily dozens of VP candidates who offer better experience, better performance, better ideas, better electoral impact and better execution than Fruit Ninja.

also, consider how Trump negotiates:
he starts from an absurd position and then gives ground back towards what he actually wanted in the first place.

Kasich is saying that Trump was offering him the throne, as an opening bargaining position?

and she's a woman. what she 'respects' about Mr., ahem, Missus Obama has more to do with Michelle's station as First Lady than any actual accomplishment.

I don't understand why folks talk like it's such an impossibility.

it's not merely possible, it's actually US Law.

that was part of the Reagan Amnesty deal. it's just that Congress has refused to follow their own law and actually implement it for 30 years now.

it would be hilarious if Trump started arresting Republican Congressional leaders for refusing to pass a bill funding the wall on the basis that they were breaking the law of the Reagan Amnesty ...

Hey, and how come Dem Con is on all the major networks and the Republican convention got hidden away on a minor cable channel and PBS?

It's not even innuendo anymore. It's out-uendo.

What an asset to Denmark.

John Oliver was even more brutal with an eleven minute merciless assault on the RNC convention. Have to admit I'm a little demoralized after that.

Joke's on them. If you've got more than just the three channels, there's something else on that's probably more entertaining.

Dissolving borders they've covered. Maybe Spirit-jail replacing regular jail? Cyber-shamanism remains untapped. Feminism is pro-islam, but most liberals don't believe Islam is a real religion.

The Pedosexualism push is dying down again. Legalized weed oppresses black people, so that's not it. Right to suicide? Right to having a part of your brain chopped out to calm you down? Right to have a tree planted in your shoulder to keep your company? You're allowed to eat, drink and watch televisions in libraries at this point.

Maybe license social media and publishing, so you can only upload video to the internet with your Social Information Number?

No. It'll be simpler. Maybe they'll ban flushing toilets and hand washing as "white privilege."

I like to call her Hillary Diane Rodham, since that's how she still thought of herself when she set up her multiple private email addresses for evading accountability, such as hdr22 and HRod17. Isn't that weird how she's running on Bill's name, when she doesn't even really identify it, like some closet radical? (And I'm not talking about her Maoist pantsuits.)

I can believe that the sentiments genuinely resonated with Melania, and that due to cultural differences, she didn't recognize that Michelle's speechwriters were forcing her to mouth some standard platitudes that she didn't really feel.

Not really. No proof that the pair even consummated their marriage.

You can't honestly talk about Detroit without talking about the major demographic shift that happened in that city.

In 1940 there were 1.47 million white people and 150k black people. [1]

Post war many blacks from the south came north looking for work. In the 60s there were a series of massive riots. The 67 riot was so bad that the insurrection act was invoked and the army was called in. [2]

There were many other riots, and there was a massive crime problem.

By 1980 it was 400k white people and 760k black people.

By 2010 it was 56k white people to 590k black people.

Those empty houses are empty because they were abandoned in an extreme case of white flight.

So blaming trade is a bit dishonest. If it was a non-us country and non sensitive groups we'd be talking about it in terms of conquest and refugees.

Because the Republicans had enough sense to put theirs on youtube.
