Portugal 1 France 0

Talk about the Ewing Theory in effect! Who would have thought that Ronaldo going out due to injury after 15 minutes would lead to a Portuguese victory?

I was DEEPLY unimpressed by the French. They played very much like the Germans did in the semifinal, standing back and passing the ball around the perimeter, showing absolutely no urgency or seriously attempting to score. It was another strike against EU-style multiculturalism as the much-ballyhooed Noir-Blanc-Marron failed at home.

One lesson of this tournament is that solid team play and determination beats superior talent. The lesser teams aren't quite as lesser as they used to be. Between Iceland, Wales, and Portugal, it was an unusually entertaining Euro.

And it's always fun to see one of the minor powers steal a championship from the usual suspects. What a fantastic goal by Eder in extra time to win it.

What a game! I thought Portugal's smaller size and quickness helped in the OT...

Yes we have had a funny Euro. I've even forgotten that Spain has lost.
But in the case of Portugal I don't think that they have less talent that Frenchs. Most of them play in better leagues and teams and are better paid.

thought everyone in Europe would be watching le Tour.

Just by way of comparison; if an average soccer player gets touched he typically rolls around on the ground for five minutes in agony or until it becomes obvious if he's going to be awarded a penalty. When a rider comes off a bike at 50 km/hour ripping flesh from shoulders, elbow and thigh, maybe cracking some bone slightly he typically gets back on the bike and tries to ride another 150 km in under three hours/ and maybe takes out an irritating spectator or two with an elbow.

Germany owned the first 20 minutes then collapsed. Portugal looked hapless for much of the first half but then won after their star went out with an injury. A beautiful game of miracles and underdogs. Today the dogged defense and desperate, over-matched offense pulled off the win. In sports and war, no certain outcomes.

If Portugal weren't the people they are, they'd be assimilated by either Spain or Morocco long ago. Resilient and stubborn people if their heart is in the right place.

Now I go into post big tournament depression. Portugal almost scored a minute before the goal.

Ronaldo is a douche but I was rooting for Portugal to beat that insufferable French side. That Griezman is annoying and overrated. Now I wait for the EPL.

Chile winning the Copa America.

A weak team with poor technical guidance...

I only caught the end of the game, but it looked as if Argentina was trying to let them win, but they just couldn't put a ball on goal.

Conversely, Messi was threatening to never play with Argentina again after the match. The star phenomenon.

Good for the Chili beans, but with so many corruption cases flying around one wonders...

France can only win when they host. Euros: didn't qualify in 1980, auto qualify as hosts in 1984 and win, revert to form in 1988 by not qualifying yet again. Won in 1996 by auto qualifying as host and win again.

As for the WC, they didn't qualify in 1994, auto qualify as hosts in 1998 and win. Qualify as holders in 2002, don't score a goal and finish dead last.

Enough about France being a soccer power.

As to my own personal note, we were so close. Poland, undefeated in the tournament (all wins, tied Germany in a game) was 1 – 1 with Portugal at the end of regulation time in the quarterfinals. Neither team scored in two overtimes. Then in the penalty kicks phase, the Portuguese goalie blocked one of the kicks, giving Portugal the win.

Parabéns para a nação português!

So I watched the first half and then went to the local WCL baseball game because I knew there was a re-brodcast of the soccer after the baseball.

Great timing, I thought. Then, driving home, I ran into a convoy of lunatics flying flags that were not French and honking.

So much for my good luck.

(It is all about me, after all)

And, who the feck is Eder? Where were they hiding this ringer?

I dont understand why Benzema was not
called to the French team. They deserved
to lose for not calling him.

Blogger Lazarus July 10, 2016 8:59 PM

wait, nobody mentioned French # 10 who hit the post @ 91:40

Bad luck, dude. ( I am still watching the re-broadcast now)

Benzema was controversially left out of France’s squad after he was charged by police in November following his involvement in an alleged attempt to blackmail former team-mate Mathieu Valbuena.

Nobody needs a shite head on the team, MK.

Phillip George - thought everyone in Europe would be watching le Tour

Quit watching after 4 or 5 consecutive winners were vacated. Doping didn't ruin cycling; the war on doping did.

digra - If Portugal weren't the people they are, they'd be assimilated by either Spain or Morocco long ago

Wait, I thought they were all natural-born trans-Americans.

Shit, PA, isn't it about time you assimilated already?

Blogger Lazarus July 10, 2016 9:39 PM

Pepe threw up at the end of extra time, and someone was dry humping Ronaldo on the ground at the end.

This is why soccer is a beautiful game.

Blogger eharmonica July 10, 2016 10:47 PM

If I've said it once, I've said it a million times "France plays well in France."

Game stats for those who care. France was clearly attacking.

And in the GER v FRA game, FRA pressed very well for 10 min, but then GER dominated the remainder of the first period until the Pig-Mounter had a lazy handball.

GER looked confused for most of the second half, but pressed to try and score. And being exposed, gave up the 2nd.

Maybe I watched a different game than you did.

Anonymous Moonbear July 10, 2016 11:15 PM

Maybe if France had some Africans in attack and in goal they could probably win!

Yeah, Eder is very representative of the Portuguese.

Don't forget Poland, a coin toss penalty kick goes the other way and Portugal doesn't even make it to the quarter-final.

He's an insufferable twat who ruins the team dynamics and way past his prime - the fact that clown Cantona was calling Deschamps a racisss for not picking the whoring, car-stealing, race baiter in his African team just made the whole thing even more farcical.

LOL, the French

Blogger SRBEL July 11, 2016 7:48 AM

The pro-pundits on "beIN" sports channel were kvetching about how this was the worst EURO tournament ever. Railing against Iceland, Hungary, Poland as being unworthy of spots in the tourny. They then went on to praise Albania and Turkey. Sports commentary convergence.

Before the game a French victory was going to bring the entire country together and give France a reprieve from ongoing social tensions. I wonder if the crushing defeat will inflame things? At this point accelerationism seems attractive tbh.

Blogger Lucas July 11, 2016 9:27 AM

And we Portuguese rejoice with the victory.

I was praying for a Portuguese victory precisely for this reason, changes need to happen.

I doubt it. The French have an incredible capacity to ignore anything that isn't in their favour. As a former football fan I was always amazed on Mondays when everyone would be a football pundit when the local team won over the weekend but apparently had no idea there was even was a game on when they lost.

As an anglo-saxon who actually enjoyed the game at the time, I would want to talk football whether my team won or lost, not so my gallic colleagues.

Anyway, most "French" support Algeria, Morocco or Tunisia first and are happy to boo Le Marseillaise when they play. The "multi-culti at all costs" make-up of the French team highlights the fact that kow-towing to the migrants is a waste of time - they will never integrate no matter what - their aim is mooslim Africa in France.

Like everything popular in France, football is heavily subsidised. Even small village teams receive funds from the mayor's office to import african players for matches watched by only a handful of supporters.
