A new milestone: 2.5 million

I have a good reason to appreciate the material contribution that McRapey and a few of his more rabid fans have made to this site. For the first nine years of the blog, I didn't pay much attention to my site traffic. The traffic had grown steadily over time, but it never occurred to me to think much of it because most of my readership was at WorldNetDaily and the blog had initially been little more than a place for me to record my passing thoughts and address many similar emails in one fell swoop. I started VP in 2003, but it wasn't until 2012, when some of Scalzi's fans began repeatedly mocking the way in which my site traffic compared unfavorably with that of Whatever, that I began looking into the implied connection between Scalzi's perceived success in the science fiction community and his reported traffic.

As Verne, a commenter at AG, put it: "Once upon a time there was a low level geek (gamma) who managed to get himself a wee bit of power and bragging rights by way of the stupid Whatever blog and a position in a Sci/Fi org that no rational man would seemingly want. He used that power to tear into man of greater station and talent. That better man had up to that time not taken his blog and many other forms of networking seriously. A angry bear was awakened and has been steamrolling all in his way ever since."

That's more or less how it went, although I'm not angry at anyone about any of this. I realize many people won't believe it, but until 2013, the 10th year of the blog, I didn't care much about its traffic because I simply didn't believe it had any particular significance beyond simple vanity. After all, what difference did it make if you had 5,000 pageviews in a month or 250,000 when WorldNetDaily had 5 million, the Atlanta Journal/Constitution had 19 million, and your column appeared weekly in both? I have to conclude that my very modest amount of success in the old media and old publishing worlds misled my perception of the digital media's importance.

That's why I was late to ebooks, why I was late to Twitter, and why I was very late to the utility of site traffic. It's also why I rather cluelessly ran for SFWA office.

But just because I'm late to the party doesn't mean that I'm stupid, or that I've lost my ability to see things that most people can't. As chronicled in SJWs Always Lie, once I started paying attention, I very quickly recognized that McRapey was significantly exaggerating his traffic. More importantly, I also came to understand why he was lying about it and how he was effectively using public perception of that "extraordinary amount of traffic for a writer’s website".

And I was downright astonished to discover that my blogs were already seeing very similar traffic, as I learned after reading McRapey's 2012 summary that, as  it later turned out, proved to be the high water mark for Whatever.

That looks genuinely impressive at first glance.  8.165 million views!  But the last number made me do a double-take. And then it made me laugh. You see, Google Analytics also tracks Vox Popoli and Alpha Game. Those two blogs happened to combine for 719,700 views in December.  719,700, if I recall correctly, happens to be a little bit more than 718,000.  Nor is it an anomaly, as that was actually down from 745,857 in November.  This inspired me to look further into the matter of comparative blog traffic.

Of course, it's not much of a comparison anymore, as Whatever now averages less than 500,000 pageviews a month while Alpha Game alone sees more than that. July 2016 saw record traffic for both VP and AG, with 2,078,989 pageviews for the former, 510,093 for the latter, and a total of 2,589,082 for the month. It may not be a competition, but as long as Whatever exists, it will serve a useful purpose for me as both a goad and a scalp.

So, 2.5 million monthly pageviews, what does that matter? Isn't that just vanity and ego-stroking? Well, no. That's the same mistaken perception that I used to harbor. The truth is that engagement is the social media fuel upon which the engine of Internet influence runs, and pageviews are how engagement is measured. That's why so many people try to fake engagement by click-baiting and buying fake followers and posting pictures of cute girls in bikinis and videos of cute animals doing cute things. If gold can be adulterated and inflated, then it should be no surprise that pageviews can be as well. As we know, they can even be entirely fictitious pageviews that are invented in interviews.

But as with gold, only pageviews based on genuine engagement matter in the end. And the sort of pageviews one receives on an old-fashioned, text-heavy site are 24-carat quality. I'd much rather have my readers, and their 2.5 million pageviews, than 10 million pageviews of the sort produced by the readers of a Gawker-style clickbait site. I think VP will eventually reach 10 million monthly pageviews, and it will probably do so sooner than any of us reasonably expect. But we'll do it for real or we won't do it at all.

Castalia House and DevGame and Brainstorm and Big Fork and other projects that you haven't heard about yet all exist because there is a material difference between 5,000 pageviews and 2.5 million pageviews per month. That is why this milestone matters, and that is why I am pleased to be able to celebrate it with you today.

Especially if it's of Spacebunny.

The most impressive part is that it is a consistent 2.5M pageviews. I know from experience (SJWList) that it's not that hard to get a lot of traffic, but it's nearly impossible to keep it up month after month. Only when you have a base of hardcore followers does it become possible, and that should scare Scalzi more than anything else.

Blogger CarpeOro August 01, 2016 8:54 AM

Started with your columns on WND I'm not sure any more just how long ago (10+ years at the least) and it is extremely rare I go there any more. All that I liked there I believe I see links to elsewhere at this point (Pat Buchanan, Ilana Mercer) and as much as I liked WND, I just got tired of the "be a good trooper and pull the R handle because most important election ever" vibe. This is the first blog I read regularly and follow on an almost daily basis (just back from a vacation where I mostly unplugged from everything). Keep the discourse going. I really can't find it often in the off-line world and see too many eyes glaze over when I discuss most of the topics in the physical world.

I don't comment here much, but I've read daily since 2004, if I recall. Back then I described myself as a libertarian-leaning conservative, and Vox Populi was a mental respite from both the pro-Bush crowd and his liberal enemies. I think I found it via links while I was fuming over the Patriot Act; which impacted me daily.

Salut!

Blogger Cataline Sergius August 01, 2016 9:56 AM

Scalzi screwed himself.

He was conning his way along nicely as a military sci fi writer. He managed to get frequent plugs from Instapundit, by the power of his ass-kissing.

He was doing what most entryist do, pretend to be a left leaning libertarian rather than the far left SJW he actually was.

Then he decided he was big enough to drop the mask. I can't say yet whether he called that one right or wrong.

The lefty gravy train dumped a hefty advance on him with an implied promise of the big time if he can get a TV show on the air or better yet a film in the theaters.

The problem is that the hefty advance in question appears to have damaged his productivity. Gammas do not work well under pressure.

RedShirts the TV show appears to have gone nowhere and anyone slightly to the right has finally figured the guy out and stopped reading his blog.

The big question at this point is, will Tor have to "Readjust" his contract?

I have only agreed with about 60% of your own PERSONAL views. About 80% of your factual analysis and only about 20% of your political views. I have quit reading other blogs when I agreed with them at 98% or more..

I will chalk that up to a good guess and being a long time reader. Maybe its not real anger you feel, but you do have a cold desire to make your enemies harmless. That tends to hurt them, unless they simply stop being an enemy. Gammas are far to delusional to just leave you alone. They see Vox Day as truly evil and foolishly think they can win.

Blogger Phillip George August 01, 2016 10:30 AM

Yet, it is food for my brain. It has shaped and influenced many of my views. It is also a place where I, as a minority in a Muslim country, enjoy an example how other Christians congregate, live as a community who pray for each other despites the heated discussion they have, giving me hope, strengtening my faith. @37: "JohnnyCon's blog is just a venue for his self-promotion and virtue signaling. He limits his commenters to ass kissing. How could it possibly appeal to anybody except Scalzi sycophants?"

Scalzi reserves the right to "mallet" (i.e., delete) the entries of any commenters he may dislike, which he does from time to time.

Whatever sports a cartoon image of JS swinging said mallet high above his head. Doubtless some of you have seen it.

Said cartoon would actually be funny if it were not a blatant rip-off of the comedian Gallagher, who perfected his mallet-meets-watermelon routine back in the 1970s.

What is it for an Indonesian what VD writes about US politics or football (we don't have that sport here)?

The elite want the same thing for everyone else. When US DNC chair said Israel was more important than the US, she meant it was more important than not just black/Hispanic/gay/ Americans but for Asian/White Americans also.

I do my part and tell anyone who will listen about this blog and CH.

The last stranger I told about this blog was a guy with a 3% shirt on, you would get trolls otherwise.

Is Winston issuing a challenge to The Big Gay's supreme hideous picture posting title?

I only give horrible mental pictures, like jewish adult guys smaller than my thumb. The closest to showing pictures was telling people to search google images for (white couple) and (white man with white woman). Well I take that back when I linked the black guy who was arrested for giving STDs to a farmer's pigs I warned he was the ugliest man I had ever seen, the other Steve doesn't give warnings.

I, too, look forward to the next Solenoth book. But, not to the detriment of your most important other work.

As long as he gets it out before the collapse. Hopefully you have a small portable solar charger for your kindle so you can still read it.

What ever happened to the Dark Ninja of Mockery ?

Its the summertime maybe he is somewhere his phone can't send horrible pics. If you take a trip to the beach and leave your phone in your room it's like asking to have 10 voicemails asking you to come in for overtime. Also did he change his name the time everyone changed their name only to post bad pics under Steve?

Wrong Steve, mate. While BGKB has his moments, the one and only Steve that legitimately could hold that title doesn't refer to himself as The Big Gay, at least not on this blog.

Not Big Gay Steve. It's the dark ninja Steve what's stationed over there on Great Airstrip or whatever it's called this week. Different Queen.

For whom it may concern.

Congrats, Vox. May all your victories be like this one, constantly building until your enemies have to admit defeat, then growing ever higher and faster until the slit their wrists down the lane this time, not just across the road for attention.

"Scalzi reserves the right to ;'mallet' (i.e., delete) the entries of any commenters he may dislike, which he does from time to time."

All bloggers exercise this right but the Chinless Wonder very rarely allows a dissenting comment. When he does he replies with his copyrighted scatological and prissy teen girl snark then deletes any rebuttal. Vox allows an uncommonly wide range of adversarial comments, which is why his blog is interesting, and it takes a lot for him to ban someone, an indication he is confident in his opinions.

Someone who reads this blog is worth way more than someone who "sees" a tweet, FB post, or reads an article on a branded news site.

Depth of your readers is more important than the width. I can say from reading this blog almost daily since at least 2009 that the depth of readership here is unmatched.

I love this place. Thanks Vox.

The truth is that engagement is the social media fuel upon which the engine of Internet influence runs, and pageviews are how engagement is measured.

And that engagement takes a lot time, at least as much time as the posts I write. Fantastic success for you! I'm also happy that I've reached 3k pageviews in the first 60 days of operation. I hope I have half your success in 10 years.

I tend to second guess your assessment of Scalzi. Is he really that bad? I ask. Then I meander over to Whatever and realize that it isn't a matter of "badness" per se. He's living in an entirely different universe from mine, and his article about the DNC, in which the DNC represents what is normal and adult, drives this concept home for me. His version of being a good school girl and "coloring inside the lines" means status quo political treason and robotic-like overtures to political "rightness". I would have to live in the upside-down world to understand Scalzi.

McRapey has very publicly called the owner of this blog a racist, sexist, homophobic, dipsh*t so many times it became known as RSHD. By your association with ths blog there's no doubt he would put you in the same categories.

That's "the thing" about Scalzi and his acolytes: They fancy themselves to be morally superior human beings, but when it comes right down to it, they are no better than the rest of us and quite possibly worse.

@88: "McRapey has very publicly called the owner of this blog a racist, sexist, homophobic, dipsh*t so many times it became known as RSHD."

And yet Scalzi has the audacity to pose as the tolerant one!

Heh. Silence is equivalent to assent. I'm gonna win me a tequila bottle!

Congrats on all your projects and may you have many more years of success especially the upcoming important projects and CH. I am also missing Selenoth but the other things are more important for now.

I'm aware of this, but I'm also aware that there's been a long time feud between Vox and Scalzi, and people who are in long-time feuds tend to talk shit about each other. I'm one of these possibly naive people who likes to give people the benefit of the doubt until I'm disavowed of it. Scalzi simply isn't on my radar because I don't like his books, but then when I go over to his blog, I'm reminded that he's the one who wrote that patronizing bullshit letter from a rapist's perspective, which is why he's called McRapey. Sigh.

Anonymous Jill August 01, 2016 4:35 PM

Oh, and congrats on your blog stats. This blog has what most don't: multiple compelling articles daily.

Blogger guest August 01, 2016 4:45 PM

Congrats to you. I spent about a year looking high and low on the world wide web, for Theodore Beale, because I used a quote from you that I found on Conservapedia. I ignored Vox Popoli for at least a year, because it didn't look like it had anything to do with Theodore Beale. finally I made the connection.

Anonymous Longtime Lurker August 01, 2016 4:47 PM

@93: Scalzi is a talented story teller. No doubt about it IMHO. But he could be an even more interesting one, I suspect, if he could summon the strength to march his fantasy self into the proverbial airlock and hit the eject button.

No, he's not that bad- he's worse than that bad. Trashing on Vox is the least of it, insignificant. Scalzi's crime is high treason against his nation, as you appear to agree. McRapey is a thought leader, raised to a position in which what he writes affects the course of civilization for better or for worse, however tiny that effect is. He makes it for the worse every single time. Ultratreason.

I'd never heard of Scalzi until finding this VP blog a couple years ago. It's been an education, one in which each new relevant item causes me to revise my opinion of him downward.

The best thing Scalzi has ever done in his life is light a fire under Vox Day... and so to his minions...
