Another Magic Dirt fail

Well, that, or Germans are taking an extraordinary interest in Turkish politics:
Around 50,000 supporters of Turkey’s Islamist president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have rallied in Cologne, Germany to demand his authoritarian reign continues. The Islamist crowd chanted “Allah hu Akbar!” and held signs reading, “Erdoğan is a human rights activist”, whilst opponents waved banners insisting “Stop the Erdomania!”

Members of the Turkish-nationalist, fascist-leaning “Grey Wolves” group were among the crowd that gathered on banks of the Rhine River with the city’s huge gothic cathedral in the background.
I wonder why these bona-fide, no-question, Genuine and Real True Germans are so interested in Turkish politics all of a sudden?

And to think people ask how mass deportations could possibly be conducted. I should think there is a pretty good hint right there.

Clearly this is a success of multiculturalism, for all those schweinfleische eating, beer drinking, blonde, blue-eyed Germans to take such a great interest in the politics of a sister country. Perhaps next the German government could teach about German history to the Germans?

Nah. Too radical.

The Phoenix police department has already provided us with a solution. They sent people with warrants notifications that they had won a prize, and could pick it up at a local hotel where they were immediately arrested. Instead of using DVD players, notify Muslim men that they will be receiving their virgins early, they simply need to register to pick them up. Problem solved.

Almost three million Turks are "German citizens," and the vast majority draw welfare benefits. If direct deposit and mailed checks were eliminated and recipients were required to show up at a designated place to get their dole, it would be pretty easy to scoop up the majority and throw them on trains. Interestingly, most German Turk "citizens' don't complete school because their goal is to get on welfare. Guest workers gone south, but who are we to criticize?

This recalls an article I saw a few days back

“Whoever wants to be involved in Turkish domestic politics, they are free to leave our country,” Mr. Kurz told Austrian media via a telephone call from an anti-Islamic State conference taking place in Washington DC on Thursday. The comments are a reaffirmation of the stance of Mr. Kurz’s party, the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP), who have said they expect all Austrians of Turkish origin to behave in a manner “loyal to Austria”.

I have a friend that worked for a company that was "too big to fail." When came time for layoff a few years ago an email was sent out inviting people to come to the break room to get free ice cream. It was one of those mass emails that doesn't show who all it was sent out to. Well, it was only sent out to select employees who were handed an ice cream bar, a pink slip and sent right out the door. Their personal items at their desks were packaged up and mail to them. Cold and cruel, but effective. I think employees deserve better, but it did get all the people they wanted gone in single place.

Two years later a new director there invited his section to the break room for snacks as an appreciation thing. None of the guys from the systems group went.

Question.

My father was born and raised in Sweden. As far back as we can trace, my father is 100% Swedish. He immigrated to Canada at age 19 and then later immigrated legally to the US, in 1965 no less, with a Canadian wife and two daughters. My mother was born Canadian first generation to English born parents. As far as we can trace both sides there, my mother's heritage was completely English. They were all permanant legal residents when I was born in the US as an American citizen. No application was ever made with Canada to have me recognized as a dual citizen or a canadian born abroad. I was the only American in our family, including even my cousins until my sisters got married and had kids. My dad eventually naturalized as an American just a few years ago. My mother had already passed.

So as far back as we can trace on both sides there are no other nationalites. I am exactly half Swedish and half English. What does that make me exactly? Swedish, English, both, American or Swedish-American. Not a facetious question. I am genuinely curious about it. I would gladly give up my citizenship if they decided to do away with place of birth citizenship retroactively. But also, if they did, considering I have never lived anywhere but the US, what then would be my citizenship? I think the child should inherit the status of the parents at the time of birth making me a permanent legal resident from either Canada or Sweden until such time that I natualized on my own. I could live with that. But then, would I be an American or not, being half English by heritage?

Shouldn't be a problem. The basis of the American nation is English and Scotch-Irish, but closely-related Celto-Germanic ethnic groups would not really change the underlying culture too much, especially if they're mixed with English and/or Scotch-Irish.

But when you're talking about people who aren't even European, even if they're part-British (like 0bozo) the absurdity of Magic Dirt becomes glaringly obvious.

By traditional Western practice, a wife is adopted into her husbands clan (tribe, sept, whatever), which is symbolized by taking the clan name (surname) of her husband. So when your mother married your father, she stopped being English and became Swedish. As a child of a Swedish mother and father, you are also Swedish.

This is, of course, complicated by endemically loose morals among the Scandis and the fact that you father was living amongst the English when they wed. Since the English and the Vikings are closely related tribes,it may perhaps be ambiguous which tribe he belonged to at the time.

I like that idea. It would require coordination between countries: Canada or Sweden would have to be willing to claim you until you naturalized. No immigrants from countries which can't coordinate, I guess. That works for me.

You're adopted American at best, but being half English helps quite a bit. The Swedes never had anything like the Magna Carta or the Long Parliament. "Fair play" means something different in Sweden vs. England. And so forth, and so on.

If you haven't bought some sort of gun, do so. It's the American thing to do.

@42 the military has been changed both from the top down via various show trials and from the bottom up via demographics. If you want to spiral down a bottomless rabbit hole of conspiracy theories, try to decide if the recent coup attempt was a real one initiated by the Gulen group, or a fake one Erdogan set up in order to flush out disloyal members of the military.

Mexico has a lot of regional cultures. Most Mexicans can tell you what tribe they are descended from; Yucata, Oaxaca, Maya, Aztec, Hidalgo.

Burritos and associated foods are from areas where they have historically grown wheat, mainly in the NE part of the country. In most of Mexico, especially in the South, flour tortillas just aren't a thing.
I once amazed the Mexicans at a party (the locals are mostly from Nayarit and Jalisco) by bringing a tray of enchiladas. They loved them and all the ladies wanted to know how to make them.

Mexicans everywhere love pumpkin pie too.

@ Viking

Had a friend who was a bank manager for a regional being bought out about ten years ago. This was in the pipeline for months. Finally, a system-wide announcement for a mandatory assembly at a nearby city convention center was released.

All branches closed, everyone, from managers down to janitors were required to attend. That was over 5,000 people. The managers were required to meet the board privately. They were told as soon as the doors closed. "You're fired, all of you. To get your severance pay, you must tell everyone out on the floor they also are fired, sign here. Don't bother returning to your branches, the locks have been changed, your personal items will be boxed and set by the dumpsters within a week, no, we don't know which specific days. Get out"

The board left first, then the security guards opened up the doors for the managers.

If you were wondering, the local media said nothing of importance afterwards. Most of those fired never recovered. My friend certainly never did.
