Larry Correia fisks the latest SF-SJW drama

In which the an insufficiency of Negroes publishing short science fiction stories is lamented:
While science fiction can be found across novels, television, and film, the short fiction market is a particularly important marketplace to consider. It publishes a relatively high level of content, and allows newer authors to break into the field with their own fiction.

Eh… Sort of. In reality the short fiction market is a good place to get started because it is easier to finish a 5,000 word piece than a 100,000 word novel. Shorts are good practice but the pay is awful. I’ve known some of the most prolific and successful short fiction authors alive, and they don’t make enough off of it to live on. Also of those 2,000 short stories, probably half of them were written by the same 100 or so, already popular/prolific short fiction writers, which will further skew the stats.

Successful authors such as Ken Liu, N.K. Jemisin, Charlie Jane Anders, and Paolo Bacigalupi each got their start writing shorter stories for a variety of magazines, which helped them as they began writing novels.

Yep. Good for them. Luckily for you there are a hundred ways to get into this business.

Short fiction also allows authors to experiment with form, style, and narratives which can have great impact on the field as a whole.

Uh huh. That sounds great and all, but it’s really kind of bullshit. Not the authors experimenting part. That’s cool. That’s how we learn. The “impact on the field” part, that there is some pretentious literati twaddle. Outside of a tiny circle jerk of critics, nobody cares. Your story probably isn’t got to blow any minds or shake the foundations of the world.  Just write your shit, and if it is entertaining and good enough, people will want to give you money for it.

Barriers for specific groups of people hurts the field as a whole by blocking new voices and styles from reaching a wider audience.

Funny, when I said that same thing years ago I was the bad guy.
I actually think the most ridiculous thing about the SJW lamentation is the idea that Charlie Jane Anders is a successful author. He's published one novel. Its Amazon rank is unimpressive and it's got fewer reviews (163) and a lower rating (3.9) than either A Throne of Bones (180, 4.2) or SJWs Always Lie (453, 4.6).

If Anders is a successful author, then everyone is a successful author. Anyhow, read the whole thing. It's vintage Larry.

It's strange, but they never seem to be concerned about the plight of the American Indian in science fiction.

How in the hell do editors at the magazines know the race of the submitting writers? Is there a box for race in a form or something? These mouth breathing paste eaters aren't going to be happy until the hiring process for every job resembles the Kabuki dance that is the college acceptance ritual.

I have been active in SF&F most of my life. with VERY few exceptions, NONE of the authors make much money, long or short stories. my best friend int he writing field often answered the question about pro writing this way. "If you CAN do ANYTHING else for a living, do that. not writing. write only if you can't NOT write. because writing will leave you poor."

Sadly, he was absolutely right. one of the best writers i ever knew. wrote stories Stephen King readily admitted to be frightened by, and he died penniless.

Hey, there's definitely easier ways to bank coin than writing SF for a few cents a word. I figured that out in the 1950's!

Sigh..... I suppose this is where we go for the standard, so-called reasonable, middle of the road response of "It's all about how good the story is... The Race of the author doesn't matter... Etc."

You know what? I'm sick of this! It never works anyways, so i'll meet these people in kind; Henceforth i'll deliberately avoid anything written by a Black person and i'll encourage everyone to do the same.
Once this deranged ideology is dead, then we can co back to judging stories on nothing but their own merit.

According to Forrest Carter, the Apache were supra-ninjas who invented ninjas which white academia never accredited to them, so who care about sci-fi?

Maybe they are publishing under white pen names like "Todd Madison" instead of Oladotun Okunola Dirkadirka so people will buy their stuff. Oh wait that is HilLIARy's doctor.

I for one welcome this criticism. I think all of these converged publications should exclusively carry stories written by black authors from now on. I'll even take it one step further and suggest they fire all of their non-black staff as well. I think Fireside Fiction should lead the way.

"I actually think the most ridiculous thing about the SJW lamentation is the idea that Charlie Jane Anders is a successful author. He's published one novel."

Well, let's break it down, he is 1) an author of a book, and 2) he successfully completed that book and sold copies. Therefore he is a successful author. You didn't say "best-selling", you said successful. Technically correct is always the best kind of correct :)

I read the Mountain That Writes fisking earlier today.

This was my favorite bit.

Dear God… I just kind of agreed with something N.K. Jemisin said (Correia checks outside to see if the 7th seal has opened). Nope, no blood rain or locust plagues. Well, I’ll be damned.

This article is focused on sci-fi magazines, but they are a relic of an earlier time. I think most of them have gone out of business. This article says they looked at 63 sci-fi magazines. I was shocked there were that many. I’ve sold around 30 pieces of short fiction, and I could only think of like half a dozen sci-fi magazines off the top of my head (and most of those are really just websites).

If there are actually 63 sci-fi mags, I’m guessing some of them have readership measured in the tens of readers. And that’s only if you count the editorial staff. So I’m really not sure how much these marginalized authors are missing out on here. I wonder how many of those pay in “exposure”?

This is a fantastic time to be an author. In the olden days, if a handful of gatekeepers didn’t like you, you were boned. For a long time, unless you were a superstar, there was basically one mainstream publishing house that didn’t give a damn about their author’s personal politics. Luckily, Indy and self-pub have changed the market dramatically.

Blogger Doom August 09, 2016 8:14 PM

Ahmver. You called us Indians.

Actually, at this point, if I find out it is a woman, a negro, a chinaman, an indian (dot or feather), or anything else, I assume they are going to try to tell me buggery is good, for the children... or that the government knows best... or that God isn't real. So, really? If I even hear that the author is a vegetarian or worse, a pagan vegan, or even thinks women are equal? I won't read their books. I assume all women believe they are equal, at this point. None shall pass. Which means if you are one, but can write? Don't let me find out until you have proven your sticks and never cross that line in your books. Still, if I find out you are any of those things, at this point... no. You've had your chance and your people have burned it down. Now it's my turn.

It's just business. The business of my soul and social reality. I don't include the damned, for any reason. And those who hold to sin are damned. They know it too. Being a negro is not a reason for acting like an animal, wanting to murder whitey, or anything else. And it won't get them any sympathy here. Nor any of the other so-called reasons. Done.

Our reaction doesn't matter at all. This sort of piece is not written for writers or readers. It's written for slush pile readers, English Majors (AKA future slush pile readers), X Studies majors (AKA parasites), black writers and magazine publishers. The goal is to induce guilt in them, so that they will be more likely to select the works that the author wants them to.
If they had the slightest self-respect, they would throw this right back in her face.

Blogger pyrrhus August 09, 2016 10:01 PM

My personal process, based on reading a great deal of modern fiction, is to ignore all new sic-fi, fantasy, and mystery fiction by female authors. I reject everyone else unless I see reviews indicating that the author is a hardass and a serious craftsman. Obviously, some authors have already proven themselves, and I'll buy their stuff if it looks at all promising. Castaglia House has benefitted from this system...

Add to that at least jumping ship from Gawker before the real implosions begin (though the excuse given was to repeat his attempt in writing another successful novel), as they apparently have this week. Watching the SJWs immolate themselves over there is truly a sight to behold.

Anonymous Anon Slush Pile Editor August 10, 2016 1:21 AM

I've been on the receiving end of the slush pile a number of times in my life, and there's no way to tell whether an author is a POC unless they put it in their bio. Some do, as they're presidents of African American writers' organizations and the like, but otherwise, there's no reason to give race information in the author bio section. Out of those who do, only one left an impression on me because I sat on his story for a long time before rejecting it. I still remember his story. It was fascinating, but needed way too much work, and I didn't have the time. If somebody wants to chalk my laziness up to racism, so be it. There's not a lot I can do about the stories people tell themselves. The stories they submitted to me--sure. I cared about those.

Blogger szopen August 10, 2016 3:23 AM

Damn, you have few dozens of s-f magazines paying for the stories? In Poland we got one. I was able to sell only two stories. In addition, we have number of s-f webzines, some of them quite respectable and being around for two decades, with known s-f authors debuting there or being editors there... but they don't pay. And, seeing about the number of likes all the stories (not just mine) get, they are not terrible popular either.

Anonymous Shut up rabbit August 10, 2016 4:41 AM

So in a world where total control of traditional publishing is in the hands of white-guilt-ridden, virtue-signalling, afrocentric strong independent middle-class white women (and their 'male' counterparts), the poor down trodden black man still can't get his work published.

How awful. If the invisible, systemic, evil cis-white-male patriarchy wasn't secretly running everything in the background despite the affirmative action, virtue-signaling SJWs holding all the visible positions of actual power and all the gatekeeper roles, one might have to conclude that pocs weren't interested in SF/F and those that were weren't as gifted as the SJWs presume...but...it's the patriarchy (and/or legacy of slavery depending on the narrative du jour).

Hey, overweight, middle-aged cat wimmin in publishing, here's an idea: If you interested yourself in black men's pursuits rather than expecting them to be interested in your hobbies you'd stand a better chance of meeting black men and getting impregnated with that baby of color you so ache for.
