Mike Cernovich's best advice

Mike Cernovich explains how to build up your brand.
As I’ve become one of the 10 most influential voices this election season, media figures look on with jealousy. That’s a scarcity mindset. My own success does not preclude anyone else from being successful. (Vox Day gets far more blog traffic than I do. Stefan Molyneux has a far larger podcast. Their success does not detract from mine.)

Here is how you can become your own Mike Cernovich, Inc.

Focus on your fans/readers. End the pundit circle jerk.

How often do you see me butt kissing anyone on Twitter? I don’t kiss up to pundits with hopes they will write about me. There are many reasons for this, some personal and some practical.

I dislike dishonest people, and pundits are frauds. Pretending to like vile people for a reach-around is how you destroy your soul. I also ignore them because it’s bad for business.

Imagine a pundit writes about me in an article. (That’s not hard to imagine. There are hundreds of articles about me. Everyone from Gawker to Politifact has tried to take me down, with the end result being us laughing in their faces.)

No one reads an article about me and buys my book. Throw-away quotes are of no value to me. Even a byline on a big site like the Hoaxington Post is garbage. How do I know this? Book sales data tells the truth....

If you want to build your own brand, here’s some advice:

Talk to “nobodies” who @ tweet you.

I don’t view anyone as a nobody, because we are all human and there’s no reason to think highly of yourself, and also because there are a lot of nobodies who are stealth somebodies. (You never know who you’re talking to.)

Write for readers, not editors and pundits.

Who cares if your work is cited by some dork? Being cited by Vox* or Gawker or BuzzFeed won’t build your brand up. Writing for readers will.
I can attest that since I met Cernovich last August, and since I began putting his advice about looking to help others into action, both the blog readerships and the Twitter following have increased dramatically. More importantly, I learned how important it was to allow others to get involved, to volunteer, and to help themselves by helping me, which has had a profound effect on Castalia, DevGame, Big Fork, and [REDACTED], among other things.

It was perfect synchronicity that I was interrupted by a phone call from one of my more important allies as I was posting this, as he was calling to discuss how Castalia can be of assistance to one of his projects, which assistance we are quite happy to provide. As per Cernovich, what we decided may turn out to be to Castalia's advantage down the road, but if so, that's just a bonus. Our only serious goal is to help an ally meet his objective.

What goes around comes around, and in ways one cannot reasonably anticipate. So, always actively look for ways to help your friends, your allies, and your supporters. Don't be threatened by their success, celebrate it and cheer them on! We can't all be number one in everything, but we can all be winners.

*In case it isn't obvious, he means Vox the lame SJW site, not me.

*I could have used that warning a couple of months back.

I clicked a link to the Vox.com site thinking it was your new endeavor. A couple of microseconds of Chicken Little (that the world was ending and you had been "turned" by the enemy) and then I realized my assumption was incorrect.

Is there a corollary for not being too proud to ask for help? Just helped a fellow traveler out with some basic blog building advice this morning, and I'd have never known he needed some pointers if a third party hadn't asked for him. There are plenty of us actively looking for ways to contribute, but we can't step up to the plate if you aren't throwing pitches our way.

Agree with Jon M. So far, my meager efforts have been bringing SJWs to rug-chewing meltdowns (and a thumbs up from Daddy Warpig!). I'd like to do something more long-lasting than triggering the blue-haired, young females.

Is there a corollary for not being too proud to ask for help?

Without question. One of the moderators explained to me that I needed to be open to others wishing to do for me what I was willing to do for WND, that not everything requires a monetary exchange, in fact, that sometimes that gets in the way.

That made a significant difference, as now I welcome volunteers and even ask for them from time to time, whereas in the past, I shunned them. A consequence of being raised on Forbes magazine, I suppose....

Mike's article is a great one, I had the pleasure of meeting him in Cleveland a few weeks back, an inspiring and humble man. On the theme of the piece, if I can be of help to anyone then I'm glad to do so. You can find me by Googling my name. I'm a PhD student in 20th century history living in Poland. I used to work in a well-known think-tank/archive in California for over a decade and am glad to meet new people interested in preserving western civilization, whether we can collaborate together now or just make contact for the future. I'm especially interested in the work of Sam Francis and I have a blog on history and current affairs. Roosh is also a friend.

I went to his site, started the interview with Scott Adams, but I had to stop. This is not intended as a snipe, but as a helpful tip: Cernovich's voice matches neither his appearance nor his self-branding as a masculinist.

@12 Groot - if you listen to Cernovich long enough, you will begin to appreciate his voice, especially its clarity.

I'm not a fan of Cernovich's voice either but he is a canny man and is worth listening to regardless. He may not be identifiable as a "super-alpha" by his voice but that doesn't matter, as his work ethos is something that almost every single Delta and below need to listen to if they want to improve themselves.

Testomonial. Vox does indeed practice what he preaches. Several months ago I asked him permission offline to occasionally put a hyperlink to my blog in the comments here.
He graciously said yes as long as I don't stink the place up.

It's been very helpful in getting me off the starting blocks. Thanks Vox!

Can confirm. I met him a couple times in Frisco and he isn't selling a story, what you see online is what you get. Very approachable and generous, that guy. Seems to have a lot of meet and greets when he's travelling, if you're within an hour or two drive of one, I highly recommend taking him up on the offer.

Especially given that it's early enough in his celebrity that an open invite doesn't lead to a near riot. That window of opportunity is closing fast and is going to slam shut once he breaks through the media blackout. Pretty soon the logistics and sheer weight of his fan base won't allow for that sort of, "Here I am, come and meet me," offer.

that's what I thought too. there's something or someone in his past that he hasn't yet been able to stand up to imo and that causes the voice. if he went to therapy he could prob find the source of the problem. he was prob shamed or intimidated a long time ago.

I have had similar probs myself and for me it was trauma from the past and this led to not being able to stand up to people. today im slowly becoming more able to.

Even if it were reasonably possible, it would be a massive waste of Mike's time that wouldn't benefit him much, if at all.

It astonishes me how some people with no accomplishments relevant to the subject enjoy critiquing people who are very successful and very good at what they do. What are you going to do for an encore, tell Milo how to more effectively draw a crowd at a college campus? Tell George Martin how to allude to a rape?

Now, observe this:
Gorilla Mindset: #7 in Books > Audible Audiobooks > Health, Mind & Body > Health

And that's with the lisp. How much better is Mike going to do without it? Up to #5? Maybe #4?

Please, Vox and Mike C, ignore these asswipes and do NOT try to alter your accustomed speaking voice. Images of Hillary talking black come to mind. A slightly slower cadence might help Mike and simply stop trying to project his voice.

Does Mike speak this way in a private 1 to 1 relaxed situation? Slow down and use the same voice you do on the phone to your wife and tone will naturally come down without any contrivance.
That said a "Y'all" now and then is good for the soul.

@36: ISTR that he's talked about having a full blown stutter in his past, and that his current voice is the result of significant efforts to improve it. He got to a point where it was 'good enough' and moved on.

My suspicion is that he likes it the way it is for two reasons:

1. It's an opening for weak attacks. People think insulting his speech will trigger him, so they don't even look for better openings. Then he laughs and mocks them for their lack of originality and stupidity.

2. As he earns more and more attention through non-written media (his documentaries and appearance on FOX's Red Eye) it's going to serve as yet another marketing tool. It doesn't detract from the man, it makes him stand out. As people hear his ideas, they don't notice his voice, but it sticks with them anyway. After a (very short) while you can't imagine him sounding any different. It's going to become as much a part of his charm as Schwarenegger's voice is a part of his.

Blogger Groot August 04, 2016 9:29 PM

If the internet is the direction you want to go to build something - you will eventually be "outed".
There are other avenues to build something and still remain anonymous.
You could build a shit ton of money (anonymously) and then back causes that align with your way of thinking. ( A good example is the guy who backs Bretibart)
Or you could just face the world head on and build something while openly fighting the good fight at the same time.
Personally, I relate very much to your question. I have a blog that fits a niche for men thats not being met and has the potential to be scalable. I also have two businesses. One is brick and mortar and another that involves investing in a certain asset.
I'm torn where to throw my energy.
Im literally obsessed with privacy making me question whether the internet route is for me. However, its tragic not seeing niches filled that have the potential to greatly benefit my fellow man.

I've also known lots of people who are short, have some glaring physical flaw, awkward voice, and are doing very well. Those are the people I listen to. They succeeded through sheer competence and ability, not some good given gifts.

Unamused Flyover Resident wrote:Ah, there we go! His name was David Ruenzel. They never did catch his killers.

Nailed it. Oh God, I love this blog!

David Ruenzel knew, better than most, about the white privilege that killed him.

As a writer for the Southern Poverty Law Center, one of this favorite topics was rooting out racism. And how white racism is permanent. White racism is everywhere. And white racism explains everything.

This mantra of the Critical Race Theory and the Southern Poverty Law Center applied to all white people because, even if they were not personally cracking the whips, or breaking the skulls, white people benefitted from a racist system that did all that — and a lot more.

Ruenzel was writing about white privilege for the Southern Poverty Law Center as far back as 1997 — long before it became the rage at college campuses, newsrooms, churches, high schools and even grade schools.

By the time of his death, Ruenzel had accumulated many of the trappings of the white privilege he exposed: The job. The home. The intact family. And most importantly in his case, white privilege endowed Ruenzel with an expectation of safety in the Oakland neighborhood where last week two black people are suspected of killing him.

A disservice they do to their own.

@68 You know what they say, "Live by the cuck, die by the cuck"

Great advice, and it is good to hear men standing up to say this in the comments. Without a clan or a tribe, you will be ground to dust by others with one. In the West, where there are no natural tribes, you have to build one.

This is the one thing Trump could do better. I have watched speech videos and he speaks very well. What I don't hear is him saying:

"Who is here from this town? From that town? Find each other here. Go back to your towns, and work together. Not just for this election, but to take care of each other. The people here are god people, decent people. Find ways to stay in touch. We won't leave each other behind. We're going to have each other's back. We're gonna stick up for each other. And that's how we're gonna win. And that's how we're gonna make America great again. Together!"

Something like that. Marxists would begin to pee themselves on TV if he started doing that regularly. Because they would understand what that really means. And what a lethal, lethal threat it would represent.

I have watched several videos of Mike Cernovich, including the one with Scott Adams. I've since completely forgotten what his voice sounds like because his internet presence and message is much larger than his voice. His internet presence is a. larger-than-life and b. completely unapologetic. Plus, his advice is sound.

Build up your friends and allies, tear down, sabotage, and denigrate your enemies.

This is basic stuff. The Left is great at this. The cucked right, talks about their principles and values and get played the fool over and over again, even to their own death, destruction...genocide. This is why they conserve NOTHING! And this is why the Alt Right can run right over these cucks, now that Nationalism is rising, the wind is at our backs.

The voice critiques of Mike are meaningless and myopic. Listen to a few of his podcasts and you forget about it completely. If anything it's him being himself instead of a fake "alpha" with a practiced voice. He has the most popular podcast on masculinity period, shows how irrelevant how he sounds is, it's what he says.

Sorry mate - but Dr.Beale - have you got a link. I did try a google search and came up with nothing relevant.

Thanks

@Groot
You're just projecting.

As one of the people you quoted, you have it backwards. All of those people accepted it, so changing his mode of speaking would only win... your vote.

And either way, complaining about it here, publicly and on someone else's blog, does nothing either. So examine yourself - just why are you making a fuss about it? If you were really doing it based on an interest of Mike so that he could reach out to more people, you'd instead email him privately about it.

Is there a corollary for not being too proud to ask for help?
---

There has to be. I learned this lesson over the last 4 or so years. It is hard if you are not used to asking for help, but it is worth it if you do.

I went to his site, started the interview with Scott Adams, but I had to stop. This is not intended as a snipe, but as a helpful tip: Cernovich's voice matches neither his appearance nor his self-branding as a masculinist.

In your head he sounds like you and you hate your own voice.

Hey Groot, good job derailing the thread, you fairy.

Vox Day replied to a tweet of mine. It was a high-level-of-prescription-opioids kind of a day for me, and I - 'twas I, indeed! - who confused him with Vox.com. I expected no reply, but got one. That was surprising. And no snide remark was it. No. Just a simple pointing out that Vox.com were the other Vox. I was impressed. And here I am, today.

This is still going on? What a bunch of gammas. Brown-nose much?

I declare you the gammaiest gamma that ever gammaed, you projecting gamma.

@79. Athor Pel:
"In your head he sounds like you and you hate your own voice."

I love my voice, and I get compliments on it regularly. I have decades of public speaking experience. Most of my adult life I've had a rich baritone ("DJ voice"). The last few years, as I age, at the weakest excuse (e.g., allergies), it has tended to drop an octave into the bass or basso profundi. It freaks Mrs. Groot out (what doesn't?), but everybody else really likes it. Gamma on that.

@77. Student in Blue:

I kind of like you. But that is stupid. Here's the OP:
"So, always actively look for ways to help your friends, your allies, and your supporters."

So I thought I'd give a helpful tip. I guess, given the response, that only means "You go, girl." Anything else is only gamma rage.

@5 "Is there a corollary for not being too proud to ask for help?"

When my husband died unexpectedly in 2011, and left me with a MFG company I couldn't quite run, I formulated a 'motto' that kept me going: "I have no choice." When I needed help or needed to do something that was really uncomfortable; I would tell myself "I have no choice." and so I would do it. (It was actually pretty useful!)

I also 'created' a (formal) self-description to lean on: "I'm the youngish widow who does NOT resist asking for help." This let me overcome shyness or a hopeless sense of "no one will help me!" (Despair was easy for a few years!). It let me ask for help, whenever I needed it -- or even just wanted it. And I got the most amazing help from wonderful people!

(And, if you think about how YOU would feel happy to help (a deserving) someone who asked: give OTHERS that happiness by asking them to help you! Share the warmth!)
