If this is true, and not a mistake, Obama has decided to come out openly in support of Islamic State:
Syria's army general command said warplanes from the U.S.-led coalition bombed a Syrian army position at Jebel Tharda near Deir al-Zor airport on Saturday, paving the way for Islamic State fighters to overun it.

The air strike killed Syrian soldiers and was "conclusive evidence" that the U.S. and its allies support the jihadist group, the Syrian army said in a statement, noting that the strike was "dangerous and blatant aggression".

Syria's army controls Deir al-Zor airport and parts of the city which are otherwise entirely surrounded by territory held by Islamic State.
This would also appear to be in violation of the recent US-Russian ceasefire agreement.

UPDATE: The US admitted responsibility for the bombing.
The Obama administration officially expressed it's "regret" for an airstrike that killed Syrian forces with a senior White House official saying "The United States has relayed our regret through the Russian Federation for the unintentional loss of life of Syrian forces."

Not very likely an accident. Waiting for somebody to accident some Russians, and then there's going to be a problem.

Blogger Cinco September 17, 2016 8:27 PM

I have witnessed more air strikes than I care to admit. Let me tell you, I almost wathed half my team get killed by a JDAM. Another time a hellfire strike almost hit our position, launched from an Apache. This could have literally happened by misspeaking one number into a radio.

It's really not like in the movies. Especially if the attack took place during the day, much harder to screw up at night. The tech is getting better for this sort of thing;but, the possibility for human error remains ever present.

All of the US government's "mistakes" in the Middle East conveniently benefit ISIS, from the chaos in Libya to the billions of dollars of American military hardware and money that fell into jihadist hands.

This would seem to be the sort of escalation Putin was warning against recently. Perhaps the clever people in Washington sense they might be out of work in November, and think they've got nothing to lose by rolling the dice.

I wasn't convinced the remarks attributed to Hillary Clinton that President Trump would hang them as traitors were true. But... it's not the worst idea.

Fuck, this is out of control. Top men indeed. We cannot, CANNOT, absolutely CANNOT win a war against a Syria, Russia, Iran, and Chinese coalition. The two prior rotations at JRTC against a minimal near peer force lost the BDE Assembly Area on the defense and didn't take the objective on offense. We were the 1st BDE that did a force on force rotation to hold the BSA on defense. We took 80% casualties. We also took the objective on offense with 80% casualties. Half our trucks didn't have radios. We ran out of water and fuel due to enemy action and couldn't resupply. Not to bring up SF again, but they are the only ones that are effective but their numbers are way too few. We have not trained for a joint Armor, artillery, air, and ground fight in over 10 years and suck at it. Most that have done it a long time ago are already gone or leaving soon. We are not ready for this and our newest generation of soldiers are special snowflakes.

If the gas pipeline through Syria is built then Russia will no longer be able to threaten to shut off Europe's gas in response to military aggression. Then the Euro will be a viable replacement for when the dollar busts. It's a dangerous game but I think the Saudis know who pays for their palaces and teeming underclass of slaves.

Same as the coup in Turkey, it appears the US deep state is playing on both sides.

The difficult situation for Russia is that in Syria they are really close to the limit of their ability to project conventional power. The Russian armed forces are intended to defend Russia, not Syria. Also Putin does not want a war with NATO.

Unfortunately it is beginning to look like 'someone' wants to start WW III. Whoever 'they' are, clearly believes they can keep it conventional. Syria never invited us there and doesn't want us.

Though you are correct, it doesn't mean anything in practice. The Real Politik of the situation means Syria can't do anything to the United States. Similarly, Russia isn't willing to risk any long term goals in the pursuit of justice on behalf of a friend.

Russia might be able to gain some political capital out of this via getting their resolution veto'd in the UN, but even that is doubtful in a world where the US still runs the show (albeit incompetently).

So, as somebody upstream asked, are the Russians going to accidentally blow one of ours out of the sky with a guided missile?

THAT is exactly what I'm worried about.

If you aren't flipping out the correct IFF, shouldn't you, couldn't you let loose a missile?

That was the only reason I entered into this discussion.

Screw Syrian Generals.

US top-line jets & Russian top-line jets mixing it up in the skys of Syria is a big turd sandwich waiting for someone to take a bite.

I don't agree with any of that.

OT: I want to be clear, I was consciously using rhetoric. It was a case of knowing that no one would dispute what I said, because if they looked into it -- and I do encourage everyone to look into everything that I say, and call me out if I'm wrong -- in this case, I believe they would find that the record is muddy and horrible. So what would they say? "You cannot prove that what you said is true, and also he may have been horribly tortured to death in an even worse manner, you liar!" But do please check my claims, and do please call me out if I'm provably wrong.

tl;dr- SciVo is an aspie.

Syria. Who really gives a crap?

They have no oil, I can't think of one damned thing they produce...let the Russians have it.

They already have a naval base in Tartus.

That's a great question. What if I told you that "the plan" since the 1960s or so has been to replace the petrodollar with the petroEuro?

The traditional way of changing currencies is to inflate the old currency to worthlessness, then start a war, then offer to pay the soldiers in a new currency that's "good as gold". That is, the Euro is planned to be stable at a time when dollars can't buy you a loaf of bread...Americans would switch pretty fast, right? Always works.

The problem is, you can't have two fiat-enforced oil reserve currencies in the world at the same time. What if the Russians don't want to play a rigged game? They might take their ball and go to a different field and play by themselves, and the other countries might decide Russian ball looks like more fun. Remember what Rockefeller said, "Competition is a sin."

Then you'd be playing a game where you need America hungry and angry while Europe is not hungry and not angry, so that America will pick fights with Russia and Europe won't decide playing with Russia is more fun than playing with America. For that, you need Europe to have an alternative mass fuel source from Russia.

For that, you need Iraq, Syria, and Turkey.

Uh huh.

Keep our damn planes out of Syria!

in the immediate, tactical situation? no, it doesn't mean anything.

in the longer term, strategic and diplomatic situation? it damn well does mean something. EVERYONE not sucking Obama's ( the US ) cock knows exactly what we're doing.

you're unhappy about the Syrian Free Shit Army heckling our trainers / SF out of the city? they were right to do so.

we are generating INCREDIBLE amounts of hatred, rage and ill will. you think Russia is going to have any respect for us, ESPECIALLY after all of the lies we've told about them wrt to Ukraine?

you think China is going to have any respect for us?

damnit man, if i'm right, that the US is the Whore of Babylon, there are going to a LOT of people ( not the merchants or the princes but everybody else ) who will be dancing in the streets when we get nuked til we glow.

a - Russia doesn't want Syria
b - who are we to deny Syria? i thought we were supposed to respect foreign cultures?

this is the kind of foreign policy you get when sociopaths run things.

i didn't say you didn't.

i'm just pointing out that, in an International Law sense, *we* are War Criminals. and Obama is engaged in Acts of War on foreign soil *without* Congressional authorization ... which violates the US Constitution as well.

sure, from a strategic threat perspective, it's Putin and Xinping that we don't want to piss off for no good reason ( i'm not advocating that we just give foreigners anything they want because they don't like us ).

but from the perspective of actual offense given, that is being delivered to Syria and is an actual prosecutable act under both US and International Law.

there is, of course, no chance that Cuck Ryan or any other Republican will do anything constructive about this.

This has all been about which dynastic families control petroleum energy since Rockefeller, Sr. hooked up with the houses of Rothschild, Windsor and other centuries old royalty dating to antiquity.

Everything we see is window dressing to cover up the handful of extended families who are all on the boards of the handful of strategically important corporations.

Bob - are you having trouble keeping up with the conversation?

You have done nothing but mix up a hodge-podge of schizophrenia.

In a nutshell: Bringing the non-integrating Gaps into the globalist Core. That Core consists of 10 regional socio-economic-religious spheres. Sunni/Shia? They are all proxies. The enemy's enemy is my friend who is also sometimes my enemy, and sometimes my friend.

You haven't even scratched the surface Bob. In fact, you aren't even in the game.

Blogger bob k. mando ( the hardest troll here ) September 18, 2016 6:57 PM

frankly, i'm starting to think i'm getting trolled. it's not like i'm not used to this ( and it's not like it's not been done to Vox here ) but these accusations that i said something which i never even implied tend to be far rarer at VP than in the real world.

so this swarm over the last couple of days would conform nicely to Vox's Taleb post, if someone had decided that it would be a good idea to demonstrate the mechanism in action.

This is the most awesome year ever (even though I also hate it and want to burn it down). And my reluctantly pro-Trump lefty friend (that I've mentioned before) just lent me a book that I can already tell is going to blow my mind, "Behold A Pale Horse" by William Cooper. I literally only read three pages before begging her. WTF.
