Mailvox: doomsayers

PA observes a familiar response:
The other day some doomsayer in the comments was huffing about how Infogalactic is “only” 1% different from Wikipedia and the features aren’t happening fast enough and blahblahblah. His line struck me as very familiar, but I couldn’t place it.

This morning I remembered:

“Now when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry and greatly enraged, and he jeered at the Jews. And he said in the presence of his brothers and of the army of Samaria, ‘What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore it for themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish up in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, and burned ones at that?’ Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, ‘Yes, what they are building — if a fox goes up on it he will break down their stone wall!’ ”
- Nehemiah 4:1-3

Yup, that was it. Keep building that wall, brother. It looks awfully good to me.
They doubt. They jeer. They try to demoralize. Meanwhile, we simply continue building the planetary knowledge core.

Amen! If everyone had given up when the going got tough, there would be no alt-right, there would be no alt-tech, and there would be no Trump president. I used to think it was hopeless, progressivism was inevitable; now I know that there is still hope as long as there is the will to fight and stand up for what you believe.

One of the most important things you learn from reading the Bible is that humans are the same creatures now as they were then. Human nature doesn't change, technology simply facilitates its expression. I'm always amused by atheists who pontificate about buying into the notions of "illiterate desert nomads." Even if there wasn't a God, those "illiterate desert nomads" understood more about human nature than a spergy atheist ever will.

It's never the critic who counts. Ignore them. Stay in the arena. Never give up.

The predominate message of the Bible is to remain steadfast and immovable, come what may. It's those who persevere to the end, who run the race in such a way as to win, who fight the good fight, who keep the faith, the overcomers who are rewarded in the end.

The naysayers and the critics already have their reward.

Blogger Ransom Smith June 19, 2017 12:27 PM

1% is often the difference. What separates success from failure.

Infogalatic is the future. And will prove even more so as it grows and Wikipedia by extension declines.

OT: ALITO shoots at sjw's in 1 of 2 unanimous 1st amendment SCOTUS cases.

Alito observed, boiled down to this: "The Government has an interest in preventing speech expressing ideas that offend." As Alito noted in response, "that idea strikes at the heart of the First Amendment. Speech that demeans on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, disability, or any other similar ground is hateful; but the proudest boast of our free speech jurisprudence is that we protect the freedom to express 'the thought that we hate.'"

Imho, the line "speech that demeans on the basis of...." is language one would find in some HR hate handbook. FTR, Alito is concurring here.

My Constitutional mentor was a big fan of the book of Nehemiah. One of his favorite quotes in it was this one: Nehemiah 2:20

17 Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.
19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?
20 Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.

Considering the amount of content on Wikipedia, even 1% of it is already a lot. Given enough time, I am sure that this number will grow even more.

Blogger Jon D. June 19, 2017 12:55 PM

1% is a ridiculously large amount of content given this context. Means people are working overdrive. It's statisticians focusing on the wrong number like usual in naysaying. Its more akin to unemployment-- a shiftin a single percentage means boom or bust for the economy. Such it is with information.

Blogger Zaklog the Great June 19, 2017 12:57 PM

Remember, the next time a churchian tells you borders are un-Christian, remind them there's an entire book of the Bible about how awesome building a wall is. Nehemiah for president!

1% is a ridiculously large amount of content given this context.

This is especially important if we consider that it is hardly Infogalactic's mission to replace every word of the forked Wikipedia content. It's only the untruths that absolutely need to be rewritten, and having compared a few pages, it seems to me they are tackling the worst offences first. Everything else the current editors are doing is added value.

Anonymous Anonymous June 19, 2017 2:22 PM

I think the fact that someone is even attempting to do this to be enormously beneficial. Some competition will even improve wikipedia's dreadful product.

Why on earth would someone expect the content to be different only a few months in?

Not everything on wikipedia is false or corrupt, much of it is strictly factual and useful. Anything that touches remotely on politics/islam/marxism/sjw-ism/etc is hopeless, but in reality that is a relatively small amount of content.

Even if fully cleaned up, the delta between IG and wikipedia will be (I'd guessimate) no more than 5% for quite some time.

The difference between the human genome and that of a chimpanzee is 1.5-1.6% (measured at the level of single nucleotide polymorphisms).

Most people would call that a significant difference.

@34 Black Pills are for Losers

The red and black pills are merely reflections of wisdom of CS Lewis when the Black Witch had a hypnotic fire and was strumming a hypnotic lute...

To quote Puddleglum, who was more a pessimist than anyone who would bother commenting:

“One word, Ma'am," he said, coming back from the fire; limping, because of the pain. "One word. All you've been saying is quite right, I shouldn't wonder. I'm a chap who always liked to know the worst and then put the best face I can on it. So I won't deny any of what you said. But there's one more thing to be said, even so. Suppose we have only dreamed, or made up, all those things-trees and grass and sun and moon and stars and Aslan himself. Suppose we have. Then all I can say is that, in that case, the made-up things seem a good deal more important than the real ones. Suppose this black pit of a kingdom of yours is the only world. Well, it strikes me as a pretty poor one. And that's a funny thing, when you come to think of it. We're just babies making up a game, if you're right. But four babies playing a game can make a play-world which licks your real world hollow. That's why I'm going to stand by the play world. I'm on Aslan's side even if there isn't any Aslan to lead it. I'm going to live as like a Narnian as I can even if there isn't any Narnia. So, thanking you kindly for our supper, if these two gentlemen and the young lady are ready, we're leaving your court at once and setting out in the dark to spend our lives looking for Overland. Not that our lives will be very long, I should think; but that's a small loss if the world's as dull a place as you say.”

I'm a Narnian on Aslan's side. AKA Alt-Right. And Aslan can sort things out at his next apperance.

Blogger tz June 20, 2017 12:50 AM

The Alt-Right Christan's imaginary Christendom is far more glorious than any secularist science fiction utopia, the proclamations of humans living in peace, the use of technology to work "miracles", the ascent of learning of knowledge is merely a child's pantomime.

I think this is why Molyneux is conflicted. Christians see the shining city, the embassy (think green zone in Iraq) of the Kingdom of God, present in the city of man, in all its terrible glory, but can't accept citizenship. Christians exist within this glory, even when they have to go out into the outer darkness to preach to gospel, or simply work. Yet their homes with their wives and children are within the embassy grounds. A shade of the world if it had not fallen because all within are redeemed. The incredible supernova of joy from the opened heaven linked to the territory taken from the devil.

The devil lies and cheats, but even with that has no actual power. If we just remember what Jesus did on the Cross and with his Glorious ressurection and ascension. We are the nuclear power fighting the savages.

You need to seriously check yourself before you pretend to compare an online encyclopedia to the walls of the holy city.

If all upgrades to the Infogalactic project are made following some days of prayer and fasting, please do tell. Really to do so would be very much a good idea.

Not to detract at all from Infogalactic, which I use, but the prayer and fasting is probably of greater utility right now.
