A failure of SJW

In an announcement that will surprise precisely no one in the Alt-Tech movement, Twitter has ceased to expand its user base:
Twitter shares tumble as it reveals it has added NO new users in the past three months. Twitter had 328 million average monthly active users (MAU) in the three months through June 30, unchanged from the previous quarter.  Analysts were expecting 328.8 million, according to financial data and analytics firm FactSet. Shares had run up some 40 percent since mid-April as Twitter investors bet on another quarter of growth after the microblogging service reported adding 9 million more monthly active users than expected in the first quarter.
Apparently the SJW-run Trust & Safety Council is engendering neither. And I note that 800,000 is pretty close to the number of people who are now on Gab. Apparently Alt-Tech can have an impact on the social media giants even before they launch serious bids to replace them.

I wonder how many users have been thrown off of their platform, and how many the Trust and Safety Gulag wardens have discouraged from joining? The first is quantifiable.

In terms of growth, where is Gab at? I imagine somewhere north of "0"

I added another account. Twitter apparently detected it was a dupe of my permanently suspended account and suspended it too.

But I bet they still count both in their "number of users".

The Trust and Safety Council only exists for the protection of Snowflakes and SJW's. It is not in reality actual Trust or is it Safety. Not the way intelligent people define the term. I haven't seen a Trojan Horse like this since Norman Lear set up People for the American Way so he could spread his brand of Leftist dogma.

Snowflakes will be protected at all costs.

Firefox has been running an ad campaign about how you should trust Firefox because Google spies on you; Jimmy Wales says he thinks Wikipedia should be more factual and less political.

I haven't heard any similar thing from Twitter, but it looks like Old-Tech is noticing, and starting to promise to deliver what Alt-Tech offers.

I remain baffled how Twitter even makes money. That's why I'm not a businessman, I suppose.

Blogger Cataline Sergius July 27, 2017 1:33 PM

An important part of Twitter's Health, Safety and Mental hygiene Council was to attract Silicon Valley VC money.

From a business perspective sinking money into Twitter is a hideous idea.

Twitter has never made a dime of profit and is entirely dependent on it' stock price to stay afloat.

But Silicon Valley VC firms have a very soft spot indeed for SJW start ups.

If you are far enough to the Left, they will turn a blind eye to your losses.

Twitter seems to be testing the outermost limits of this business plan.

You could make an argument for investing if it was still growing, even if everything else was bad.

But now it's not growing.

Actually Twitter can make money easily enough if it starts charging people for it's service.

However that will engender a dropoff in it's user base.

How big a dropoff? Is the critical question and I think I do have part of an answer to that.

Twitter's favored user base consists of Millennial Lefties... And they want their shit totally free.

$100 says you can trace 80% of that money back to the three-letter agencies who use Twitter to mine metadata for their social engineering psyops.

I popped on Twitter back in like '07 and found myself allergic to it. Couldn't stand being on there for more than a couple of minutes. But I understood its appeal to others.

This year, I finally decided to create an account and see what it was like. Mostly I just came up with the most ridiculous hashtags I could think of, 99% of which already existed. Got into a few fights with lefties, which diverted me for 30 seconds or more.

But turns out it's largely advertising and self-promotion, which is boring. Plus, after a day or so I could feel myself be funneled into a subset of the site reflecting my interests, political and otherwise. Which I assume is intended to both make it easier to market to me and to keep me from influencing others, should I attempt to do so.

Twitter's business model could work if it were a monopoly. I think the idea a lot of investors might have is that it's a Mass Media platform within the Social Media world. They just have to keep tweaking it, and eventually it'll be one of their old Melting Pots.

Anonymous Anonymouz July 27, 2017 2:51 PM

To be fair, they're cracking down on duplicate accounts and fake profiles (of the people they don't like, of course, those Hillary's fake followers are good in their books).

Anonymous Steve July 27, 2017 3:02 PM

They've become incredibly obnoxious in grubbing for new users - popup spam asking you to sign up if you so much as look at a tweet and blocking non members from browsing photos.

Blogger James Dixon July 27, 2017 3:12 PM

So at this point they're kicking off one person for every new person that signs up (that they will admit to, suspended accounts are probably still counted as active users). It's only going to get worse. If you have the nerves and money, I'd say short the stock.

Blogger mgh July 27, 2017 3:13 PM

Given that the primary purpose is self promotion, why don't they charge the users a monthly fee based on the number of followers? Free for those under some threshold. The Kardashians would pay, the kids following would not.

Sadly, twitter could make money. Total revenues last year of $2.5B could easily generate a profit. The reason they don't is because they don't particularly want to. Somehow, the company employs around 4000 people. I can't even imagine what they actually do besides waste people's time in meetings. Even with each Hindu programmer worth 1/8 of an American one, there can't be that much actual coding work.

Good management would fire half of them off the bat, instantly turning it from a net loss to a net profit.

Which is why it's clear that the objective is not to make a profit.

@32 As I mention every time this topic comes up, Twitter also has a massive server room footprint in a top-end data center. You should assume that they are programmed about as well as Wikipedia or worse; and just spending money on more and more systems to overwhelm their crappy design with cycles.

Infogalactic was able to crush Wikipedia in efficiency for pennies and some skilled programming time. All Twitter is is a messaging server with a bunch of advertising and analytics - and here comes Gab.

I've been trying to warn for years about the old cyberpunk scenario of corporations owning all the communication bandwidth, and then censoring who they want because "private company can do what we want, ha ha."

I'm heartened by this. I'm hoping part of their downfall is steady stream of info out there about their censoring. I wish I could help the alt side more, but I'm a hardware guy.

SJWs always leave money on the table and an opening for the competition.

Was the original Pepe creator an SJW? He has a character from a comic he drew become a national phenomena, and he fails to monetize it? Good lord, I would have had T-shirts and Pepe plushies on sale as soon as I could. I'd have Pepe story books illustrating the points of the alt-right.

you've got the wrong end of the elephant.

curating ( copyright strikes, etc ) and moderation is where most of the man hours are going to be at this point.

practically all of the coding is done already. i mean, yeah, sure, they're still doing optimization work but other than that Twitter is extremely restricted BY DESIGN.

think of it this way. +300 million "active users". even if ONLY .01% of your accounts are 4Chan, that's still 30,000 accounts entirely devoted to trolling.

do you actually think that the trolling population of Twitter is less than 1%? or even less than 10%?

let us all pause now and remember Godfrey Elfwick and Prof Hebestein.

i'm not really disagreeing with your profit point though. $2.5 Beelion split 4,000 ways is an average salary of $625,000.

Well, they are paying for bigtime bandwidth and serious compute capacity.
Is seriously doubt that moderation counts for much of it at all. As near as I can tall, it's 90% automated. There is, literally, no "customer service", unless you mean on the advertising end. I'm sure they're paying hefty commissions and bonuses, to whoever can sell the space. That's gotta be a tough job.

Still, that much money coming in for a website, if they wanted to turn a profit, they would be able to.

Jimmy Wales is or was an objectivist which is about as far from an SJW you can get without being Augusto Pinochet. He set up the framework of WP and as admins or mods turned progressively more left he lost control. I think mostly due to the fact that people on the left are dysfunctional enough to not have friends, family or a job. People on the center or right don't have the time to spend that is needed to become a WP admin. Now he's probably just trying not to upset the gravy train but I severely doubt that he is happy with the way things are and are going content wise. The money and prestige on the other hand..

My info might be outdated but Cassandros and whoever else claimed Jimbo was an SJW please produce at least one quote from the man that shows he is SJW.

I dont like Jimbo, WP is horribly bent towards shitlib. But words have meaning and Id like to keep SJW from becoming a generic disparaging term a while longer and we shouldn't needlessly make an enemy of a potential enemy of our enemy.

As a stock market investor, I've never been interested in Twitter.
For one thing, its been in a long term down trend. It reached a high of $69 a share on January 3, 2014. Here are some data points along the way that illustrates the downtrend:

$53.94 a share on Oct 3, 2014
$37.84 a share on May 1, 2015
$29.25 a share on Sept 5, 2015
$23.05 a share on Sept 30, 2016
$16.84 a share on July 27. 2017

Another thing I look at when analyzing a company is, how much could it be affected by new competition? For example, I think its going to be extremely hard for a new company to make inroads against Google in terms internet search. In regards to Twitter, I can easily see other firms make inroads against it. There are other social media sites, such as Gab . Also, I think it would not be difficult for a non-profit such as the Wikipedia Foundation to create an alternative to Twitter.

Anonymous zebedee July 28, 2017 12:23 AM

Actually Twitter can make money easily enough if it starts charging people for it's service.

However that will engender a dropoff in it's user base.

That dropoff would be like the fall of the guillotine's blade.Probably 90% of their "base" would flee from the most minimal subscription fee, because the value just isn't there (especially given the level of trolling possible), plus most celebrities would abandon it when all that free pub goes up in smoke. It would be deader than MySpace. in a year.

That's the thing about social media: almost no one truly needs it, but they'll use it because it's free. Once you slap on a cover charge, nobody wants to hang out at your virtual country club, because it's too ephemeral and intangible an experience.
