The GamerGate playbook

I, for one, have absolutely no idea what she's talking about. GamerGate? What is this playbook of which you speak so highly?
The Anti-CNN Harassment Campaign Is Using the GamerGate Playbook

This time the target isn’t video game reviewers. It’s families of reporters. And many of the same characters from the first time are back for Round 2.

KATHERINE CROSS

For Twitter users, the #CNNBlackmail flap has been hard to miss. Angry Trump supporters, furious that the network “forced” the originator of the Trump-wrestling-CNN GIF to apologize even though it didn’t, fixated on a single line in the story posted to CNN’s KFILE: “CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should [his remorsefulness] change.” Cue the angry mobs that targeted not just the reporter of the story with death threats, but his wife and parents.

But for me, this all looked depressingly familiar. A mostly far-right swarm of Twitter users caterwauling about free speech, memes, and ethics in journalism? We’ve been here before.
Many of the same tactics and major players that made names for themselves in GamerGate—from Mike Cernovich to Weev—are being used to push a wide-scale harassment campaign against CNN.

In August of 2014 Eron Gjoni, the ex-boyfriend of Zoë Quinn, a game developer, posted a lengthy screed in which he falsely accused her of illicitly securing favorable reviews for her game. This touched off a tidal wave of abuse directed at her. At first, it all seemed like so many of the seasonal storms of harassment that women in tech are subjected to. Critic Anita Sarkeesian, veteran game developer Jennifer Hepler, and tech evangelist Adria Richards all had their turns as the monster-of-the-week for reactionary internet trolls heaping rape/death threats and slander upon them.

But the abuse around Quinn rapidly metastasized into something larger that attacked several people at once, and brought old targets like Sarkeesian back to the fore (she was eventually forced to flee her own home after detailed, specific threats were made). Using the fig-leaf provided by the false accusation about reviews, the attackers conjured a scandal about gaming journalism to justify their fixation on the female game developers and feminist critics they so hated. They called it #GamerGate.

This movement lasted for months, and constituted a new form of both online harassment and right-wing activism. Though GamerGate putatively drew its adherents from across the political spectrum, they would constellate around hatred of “political correctness” and feminism, and ally themselves with conservative and extreme-right voices.
Terrible stuff indeed. I, for one, denounce this mob intimidation being directed at hard-working journalists who are guilty of nothing more than reporting the news to the American public. I mean, what sort of monster concocts dreadfully dank memes like the one below? (clears throat, adjusts bow tie) Truly reprehensible!

The SJWs can't help but lie! Gjoni, himself a devoted leftist, made no accusation of the kind.

Instead, he offered factual evidence (including Zoe's own admission) that she had cheated on him with 5 different men despite repeatedly stating that she considers cheating a form of rape.

Yup, plus they *never* mention why it got it's name: "Gamer is dead" articles. The stuff with Zoe was something between about 25 ppl in a deep corner of the web until the article dropped and a few people put the networks together.

But they'll keep lying because they have to. To admit what caused the entire event is to accept that #GG was correct.

I wholeheartedly and unequivocally condemn any death threats that have been made against the reporter, his family, and any other individual at CNN. There is NO justification for putting them on their guard like that. Why would anyone want those people trained to look around and seek cover whenever they hear a motorcycle approaching?

Bomb threats are the worst; we certainly don't want them watching out for ‘suspicious packages’ like surveillance kit and, um, other things.

My question to CNN and their minions is: have they not heard of operation disrespectful nod? Do they want to keep advertisers?
Do they want to be paid?

Because the next steps are: cut the cable, boycott the advertisers, refuse to meet with the reporters, starve the beast.

@11 VD

I wasn't actively involved, but I did keep up right after the articles dropped and suddenly all of the Tech Sphere is talking about it. I still remember listening to the 2 hour discussion by the Internet Aristocrat about what the heck all of this was about.

Also, every step deeper into the entire event just brought up so many questions about "Game Journalism". No one had a shred of integrity, to the point it's all but obliterated "Game Journalism" as a written function. Everything in that sphere is pretty much Video now.

I'll also never forget all of the forums actively suppressing discussion of the topic. The majority of the gaming press had just called their readers low-life scum. SJWs always Project, as we got to see on mass-scale and in real time.

@23 Ransom Smith

Apparently she is on track to sell 30 books or so. Caught some discussion of it. Some of Vox's obscure back catalog probably will sell more copies in a month than she'll sell all together.

A "book deal" doesn't mean a lot these days. We now produce in a range of more books per year than all of human history pre-1850, I think it is. Or maybe it was 1930. Lots, and lots of books. Not a lot of them worth reading, and the "reading" public is fairly static.

Standard cultural marxist play: create an issue for no reason other than to capitalize on the reaction to it. CNN is a master troll it appears and if we react, they get to play victim.

But if we don't react, it's like letting the bully steal our lunch (more like letting the jihad rape our sisters and daughters, but you get the point).

The key is to point out how CNN's appeals to sympathy are disingenuous.

CNN desperately needs to rally disaffected troops. They were feeling pretty lonely for a couple of days.

Their naked threat to dox Han cost them a lot of support from their own side. Even the other Vox came out against them over that one and that is saying something.

CNN wants Lefty support. The best way to do that is to invoke the image of a detested enemy.

"fixated on a single line in the story posted to CNN’s KFILE"

Because that line was the clear message intended for everyone who would dare to embarrass CNN. It was even set off as a one-sentence paragraph, to make sure it stood out.

"I only beat her that one time! Why are you fixated on that? What about all the days when I didn't beat her?" -- CNN

Actually, they pretty much are. Legally, corporations have almost all of the same rights individuals do. They do not have the 5th Amendment right to protect themselves against self-incrimination, but pretty much everything else.

The left and right both abuse the fiction of artificial "persons". They apply it to groups, as well. Negroes have all been oppressed. Whites have all been guilty of White privilege and institutional racism.

The squawk about the "oppression" of journalists recently has been one of the most enjoyable example of hypocrisy I have seen in awhile. Face it, journalists of all stripes are not the sharpest pencils in the box. They became journalists partially because they didn't have the mental acuity or discipline to be in a STEM field. Some of them may be highly literate, but most are just narcs and bubble-headed bleach blondes. But, to hear them spin the narrative, they are the sanctified protectors of liberty and the only ones that have a true understanding of the 1st Amendment. As exemplified in the noble National Enquirer and the News of the World. Any infringement on their right to distort, lie, and assassinate is an attack on the very fabric of the Constitution and will result in the political class having no watchdog to expose their crimes. And we are to ignore the fact that the "media" is just as dangerous and corrupt. According to the "media", any revelation of their conspiracy to disseminate propaganda and disinformation is "fake news", with the "fake news" creators the only ones with the right and duty to define what "fake news" is. I relish every moment I see them foam at the mouth, like the rabid hyenas they are.

The only way she can get on her high horse is to misrepresent what happened, and voila' there it is. Not upset they forced him (or not) to apologize, but that they reserved the right to out him if he said things they didn't like in the future, which she also tendentiously changed in her "quote".

This is the Big Lie as practiced by the Regressive Left. No one who knows the FACTS of the "Zoe Post" believes that she was sleeping around in exchange for positive reviews, but what use are facts when there is an Official Narrative to be promulgated?

The sad irony of GamerGate is that if Kotaku's hacks and editors had the slightest shred of editorial integrity and ethics they would've simply amended the corrupt pieces with disclosures and that would've been the end of that. Instead they chose to wage coordinated jihad against their readers and three years later they are STILL LYING.

Why? Because there is good money in claiming victimhood. Zoe and Anita and Brianna and all the rest have made their life's work to speak about how they are victims and collect phat Patreon hauls and fawning media attention from their accomplices. It's not like they're making games or even the promised videos. Nope, they are just martyrs of the Patriarchy. Stop by their Patreon and give or else you're a rapist.
