Something is broken

Nicholas Nassim Taleb is underwhelmed with the state of the UK intellectual sphere after his encounter with "historian" Mary Beard:
The BBC did some kind of educational cartoon on Roman Britain and represented “diversity” in terms of someone looking African in the show as representative of “diversity” at the time. Any dissent from the statistical errors made by the politically correct police is treated as apostasy.

What was meant to be a “typical” of Roman Britain by the BBC: flowing quotas of political correctness backward in time.
  • Representativeness heuristic. The picture was portrayed as representative (playing on the representativeness/avalability heuristic in the minds of children). Some people backtracked later by saying it is was not common but not impossible, which is where I shout “BS!”
  • Anecdotal vs Statistical. The backup is mostly anecdotal from cherry picked stories. We find nothing beyond traces of sub-Saharan genes in areas where Roman legions were located (France, Gaul, and even Spain, where most of it came much later from the Arab trade). Show the picture to a French or Italian person and tell him “this is the typical…” and watch the insults.
  • Fuzzy classification. Even the researchers who deal with physical remains miss the point that people from North Africa looked no different from Spaniards, S. Italians, and Greeks. Punics/Phoenicians we now know looked Canaanite, just like a Southern European. Berbers looked like mountain berbers today. So representing “diversity” should focus on the difference between locals and Romans, not within Romans. It would be like mixing English and Spaniards/S. Italians, which makes sense.
The reclassification “when it fits” is nothing short of fabrication.
Mary Beard, of course, fled from the obvious consequences of her own arguments when I pointed out to her that her advocacy of ethnic diversity, combined with her observation that the Roman mass rape of the Sabine Women was "a way of creating a mixed society", amounted to an implied endorsement of the mass rapes of Rotherham.

English academics are third-rate intellects, which, sadly enough, puts them a leg up on most of their American counterparts. That being said, I still have a lot of respect for Ms Beard, whose take on history is certainly original, if nothing else.

I know I'm definitely looking forward to her first book on Carthaginian history, which promises to be truly ground-breaking in light of her discovery of considerably more ethnic diversity there than had been hitherto suspected.

The only way to justify a crime like 'diversity' is to pretend it has always been this way.

The BBC like all MSM in the WEst is the worst propaganda. They are complicit in what they advocate.

Slightly OT but regarding intellectuals

But then again after Vox's rhetorical slashing she might be beyond salvage as a credible source.

Sadly, it isn't the statement that is idiotic. In a venue where poorly reasoned myths replace empiricism as the epistemological foundation, participation in the mythology becomes the price of admission. Garbage in, garbage out. This eviscerates the level of discourse, while running off the more intelligent and perceptive who prefer to be reality facing.

As Orwell said, "He who controls the present, controls the past. He who controls the past, controls the future". Growing up, I always loved History at school. Most people didn't. They could see no more use for it than some people see for Algebra. The could not see that knowing what humans did in the past allows you to understand what is going on right now. So, by distorting the past, you may mold the future into whatever you want it to be. Saying that negroes have always existed everywhere and that the presence of "diversity" contributes to all societies allows you to insert alien presences everywhere, in the name of their "positive" contributions. Sure, they do contribute to society. Just not "positively". In fact, negroes as a group are always a net negative for mixed societies.

And, as Saul Alinsky said, “He who controls the language controls the masses”. This is why the left is so keen on changing the meaning of words. If a homosexual is a sodomite, they sounds so judgmental. Why, they are "gay", not fudge packers. The only problem with this is that you can call a Tiger an Antelope. Experience is going to teach you they are not and that a Tiger cannot change its stripes. This is why you want the masses to remain stupid. People that can think for themselves are always a danger to the ((((elite)))).

True and they were also familiar with gunpowder...

The only saving grace of that awful movie was Alan Rickman's completely over the top hamming up of the Sheriff of Nottingham.

How absurd. If Europe and Britain were so ethnically diverse 2000 years ago, where are the descendants? Why do most Europeans lack even the slightest trace of sub-Saharan genes today? The fact is that sub-Saharan Africans were rarely present anywhere in the Roman Empire even in N. Africa, much less in Britannia. Modern day idiots equate "Africa" with "black" and try to posit that even N. Africans of Phoenician and Greek descent were dark skinned. They claim that Numidian's were black (they were Berber) or that Septimus Severus was black (his ancestors were from Italy and Libya). I've even seen it said that slaves in Rome were black...what the fuck? Any black skinned individual would have been an oddity anywhere in the Roman empire except possibly in lower Egypt or Mauretania.

Its just an Orwellian attempt to rewrite history to increase the size and influence of the "People of Color," that racial minority group which includes 80% of the world's population. We Wuz Kangs and all that.

I'm not certain how common Sub-Saharan's were in the Roman world.

About the only way they could get out of interior Africa was as slaves.

It happened, sure. I mean that has always and I do mean always, been the Arabs go to market for slaves.

But prior to the 1600's long distance transportation of slaves was too expensive due to the cargo's mortality attrition en-route. The cargo capacity wasn't big enough to make up for it in bulk.

Now it's a reasonable assumption that a few made it as far as the Coliseum. But that was a specific import earmarked for the Greatest Show on Earth. They were always looking for exotics to spice things up during the Games.

Note the use of the word "exotic," as in something you don't see everyday.

Perhaps you’re tight. Personally, I think the BBC’s effort to diversify history is a mistake because it doesn’t credit kids -of any ethnicity- with enough nous to appreciate historical reality or their place within it. Any kid who evinces a real interest in history will soon discover the facts.

The BBC is simply playing it safe, quota-wise. Perhaps, somewhere in the bowels of BBC House, it is recognised that political correctness obeyed to the letter of the law is counter-productive when it leads to absurdities such as black ‘Celts’ fighting in a shield wall alongside their white Celtic 'brethren' (as in one agregious example)..

There's this chick, there's Zuckerberg's sister, who's saving the discipline from white men. Then there's the British lady I dubbed "Dr. Boobies," whose cleavage made repeated appearances on an execrable PBS documentary series on Greece.

Funny thing is, most of these programs go from making sweeping summaries of grand drama to sharp turns into archeology or anthropology. As in, "The Greeks invented Democracy, Drama, and Philosophy...blood and fire...Xerxes, Marathon, Thermopylae, Peloponnesian War..." Ten it's all, ooh, let's look at this shard of clay. As if girls are interested in digging for shards of clay.

Totally uncool to call MPC a slime pit. We love the Jews, some of our most famous members are married to them or are trying very hard to be married to them.

"Little john sounds like a jewish name."

LittleJohn is an old English family name. There were LittleJohns living in Fairfax County, Virginia in 1687. One of them later bought a small plantation in South Carolina and one of their daughters....Nancy LittleJohn.... married my great, great grandfather...John Reynolds. They were driven west from Decatur County, Tennessee by the civil war and settled in Logan County, Arkansas.

@30 "I particularly love sub-Saharan African architectural histories,"

And the whole "dem ebil whute peoples dun STOLE our stuff we dun builded lahk dem pyramids and sheet..."

I always wanted to ask: "And so, what, then? You FORGOT how to do it over?! You retreated to mud huts and eating pygmies?"

But I'd rather not get knifed...

Monetary strategy: gather up old history books (cut off date no later than the mid 1970's) and carefully preserve them, so there is a non corrupted base to rebuild on. Old books of children tales, science texts and so on are a slo needed.

Make sure the repositories are not in cities, but spread out to provide multiple nuclei for rebuilding Western Civilization.

A lot of people hate it because the tests always treat the subject as a trivia quiz.  If you can regurgitate names and dates, you get a good grade.  If you can't, you're going to be frustrated at the very least.  This kind of trivialization kills any desire to learn.

And we know it is impossible to turn off autocorrect, because Saint Gates tells us so.

Weak.

You've heard of Google...?

Poor England--taken over by those who hate Christ. It's what's happening in the US, though the two nations are not completely in parallel: Americans are armed to the teeth, whereas the English people are unarmed and cannot defend themselves. This is what happens when we don't fight those who seek our destruction:

@71. Ostar

Given that the majority of the local populace is now hispanic, I wonder how long this can continue....

A mostly hispanic United States might well be an improvement.

Cemeteries in Roman Britain have skeletons from all over the Roman Empire, but later graveyards contain only Anglo-Saxons.

This implies that ethnic diversity was part of the Late Roman social order, but when the Romans left in 410 AD, things got tribal real fast, and the losers passed down very little DNA to today's Britons.

Imagine Detroit suddenly deprived of welfare benefits and surrounded by rural rednecks who shoot niggers on sight, and you have a rough idea what England was like in the 410s.

Now that you mention it Jews actually HAVE been all over the world going way back. Heck, one of them got stranded in the Americas and ended up intermarrying with an American Indian tribe!

Ha ha ha. That's three future blind musilmas. We were always told never to look directly at Mg - look at these google-eyed fools!

Then again, their teacher is probably a diversity hire who knows absolutely nothing about the subject.

Sigh, "There's no England now."

Sod off you disingenuous, fat, old fart. Taxpayer-funded BBC job announcements specifically state that white people (ie British people) will not be considered and need not apply. Who do you think pays the majority of those taxes?

Pull your head out of your arse - maybe the incidental black face will get you a pass with the "new" natives WTSHTF - you'll definitely pass their smell test. Or are you one of those cowards who knows exactly what's going on and hope to die before it happens?

Professional tip: handguns aren't going to save you from your lack of fath. Neither will good (i.e. white) genetics.

Blacks in England & Northern Europe during the Roman & Medieval eras?

Not for long since they won't produce enough Vitamin D from sunlight in such a misty and shadowy climate.

Well, Mr. Rational, that sounds like a rationalization. I'm not talking about grades. I'm talking about learning. If "trivialization" kills someone's desire to learn, I would have to say that they didn't really have much of a desire to learn.

If the part you're required to learn (or at least memorize for the duration, to regurgitate for the test) crushes your soul, you're going to have zero desire to dig deeper.  Likely you're going to hate the subject and the one responsible for forcing it onto you.
