RaiderGate!

This report of the Raiders offensive line metaphorically kneeling while on the field sounds as if it must be satire. I mean, it can't possibly be true, right?
A new report from The Armstrong and Getty Radio Show has sent shockwaves throughout the sports world after it was revealed that members of the NFL’s Oakland Raiders may have purposefully allowed their star quarterback to get sacked multiple times after he refused to kneel during the National Anthem.

If true, this would essentially mean that an NFL football game was illegally thrown over anger that one of the teams star white players did not believe that kneeling during the nations anthem was the correct way to protest supposed racial injustice in America.

In other words, an epic level scandal.

During the anthem, virtually the entire team was seen kneeling other than the teams coaches and star quarterback Derek Carr. Unfortunately, this may have not set well with the teams offensive line as they were apparently the players who spearheaded the entire idea to kneel as a team in the first.

“This is one hell of a scandal with the NFL, could ruin the whole league,” claimed the show before detailing the fact that Carr was sacked two times in a row on the teams second drive and that the teams usually dependable center snapped the ball at the wrong time in three different instances. Extremely capable receivers also made multiple “weird” drops of passes thrown by Carr that T.V. announcers even noted at the time.
On the one hand, you think, no way. What sort of professional being paid millions of dollars would even contemplate such a stupid action. And then, you consider that the combination of low IQs and an entitlement philosophy with low short time preferences does make it possible. Still unlikely, but possible.

From the radio show forums: "One of the guards reportedly said if he wants to stand alone he can play alone. One reporter asked a team official about it and was told he would never be allowed in the locker room or any access to the team if he reported on it."

UPDATE: An NFL sponsor is the first to pull its ads:
It's happening; the NFL has just lost their first sponsor over players and coaches' move to take a knee during the playing of our national anthem before kick-off.

Tennessee businessman Allen Jones slammed the league as "unpatriotic" in a public statement and pulled all ads for his two businesses, Check Into Cash and Hardwick Clothes, from the NFL for the remainder of the season. Jones reportedly "instructed his media buyer to remove any commercials from airing during NFL games."

“Our companies will not condone unpatriotic behavior!” said Jones in a statement.

I'm waiting at the dentist, and ironically, I look up at the waiting room TV to see a story about progress being made in helping players not get concussions.

Send to me that they better hurry or the problem is just going to go away on its own via total death of the league...

The note at the bottom of the report is probably correct. No one in the Raiders will ever admit to this. Botching one play isn't going to be notable, but throwing a Game is going to bring a federal investigation.

Huh, poop showed up.

As for the NFL game, will get confirmation in the off season. The Raiders are paying Carr as a franchise QB, so everyone else on the team is expendable. Everyone. Expect a lot of "salary cutting" and "youth movement" moves in the offseason. That'll be confirmation.

Blogger dc.sunsets September 29, 2017 8:24 AM

Think about it. This is the kind of thing that, if implanted in the base brain of fans, would drive a stake through the NFL's heart.

Imagine if every time a team was having a "bad day" their fans couldn't help but consider the possibility that their black players were sandbagging because BLM/Politics. One bad game is all it would take. Little by little, even the most zealous fans would become disgusted and abandon their prior obsession.

Imagine if Trump metaphorically "retweeted" the original story.

Blogger James Dixon September 29, 2017 8:25 AM

Mike and Mike was going on this morning about the possibility the players would stop kneeling during the anthem and instead kneel before it.

Then they went on about how the protests had "started a discussion" and that was a good thing and how it might improve things.

They have no idea what the league has done to itself. Everyone who has been paying attention for the past election cycle now knows were in a war against people who hate us. The NFL could have declared they were there to play football and stayed out of it. But no, they (including the owners, the commissioner, and the players) decided to take a side, and it's not the side of the vast majority of their viewers and ticket buyers. Yes, some of their viewers will come back when the protests stop, but nowhere near all of them. They've lost a significant percentage of their audience forever. Exactly what percentage is debatable, but it'll be enough that they'll feel it.

He doesn't want anything to distract them or make their commitment to that job anything less than 100%." NFL players take plays off sometimes; he doesn't want to encourage any more of that.

apparently it does take more brain power:

Quietly enjoying their money. They don't all blow it. The NFL now puts rookies through a consumer economics sort of class, to introduce them to foreign concepts like, "Hey, see that $450,000 on your contract? There's this thing called taxes, which means the government is going to take half of that, so don't go signing any $400,000 notes just yet." The league also tries to set them up with legitimate financial advisors, so they don't end up with their best friend from high school investing their money in robot cars or something. It's helped, but they can only do so much.

Anonymous Steve September 29, 2017 8:51 AM

I'm not an American football fan but am a Trump fan, so find this whole saga interesting from a culture and politics POV.

Politically, it's genius. The President has always been canny at picking targets for feuds, and a bunch of millionaire melodramatists who ostentatiously disrespect your national identity represent a brilliant foil for his purposes.

It's also culture war done on the cheap. All the President had to do was make an off-the-cuff sounding remark and fire off a few tweets, and he's got two multi-billion-dollar industries dancing to his tune. When you're bogged down by the swamp in Congress, the public sector, and the judiciary, these sorts of rhetorical commando raids are useful for keeping your base engaged and motivated while you slowly grind out more important wins elsewhere.

Deal artist Trump is the master of creating scenarios where he wins either way. He was never going to lose a scrap over respecting the national anthem and the flag, but it's also a quicksand issue for his enemies - the more they struggle, the worse off they'll be.

Seems to me the NFL could've turned his spotlight into a win (or at least only a minor, temporary PR bruise) for them if they'd realised WOPR was right: in Global Trumponuclear War, the only way to win is not to play.

For whatever reasons, they just couldn't resist charging into Trump's trap though.

From a business perspective, this looks like madness where I'm sitting. The incomparable Nate has expressed his faith in the enduring value of the National Football League and the game in general, and it's certainly true that billion dollar franchises don't go away overnight.

But consider this: as sports brands have become more globalised and commodified, and competition for eyeballs is higher than it's ever been in the history of mankind, the loyalty of your customers can't be taken for granted forever. If you allow your product to become disconnected from - or worse, perceived as hostile to - the identity of its fans, there's no upside in that at all. MLB used to be the more popular American sport, so there's no reason to believe the goodwill the NFL has built up over the decades is infinite.

Someone investigate what communications came out of Goddells office post Trumps comments. Wouldn't doubt he put heavy pressure on the owners to go along with these shenanigans.

No doubt he did; the fact that everyone in the league was saying "unity" all weekend made it clear that talking points went out. But....that is his job.

He made the wrong decision, but that's what he does. And really, the decision was made years ago, when the league office became converged enough to start pushing women into the sport and making "domestic violence" the worst crime ever. It was made last year when the league wouldn't let the Cowboys honor the five BLM-slain policemen. The league office chose a side long ago, and the owners seem cool with that. Some advertisers aren't, but we don't know yet if there are enough of those to make a difference.

Blogger Nate September 29, 2017 8:57 AM

yep. there are tons and tons of them. You just don't hear about them because "so and so is doing fine" is not a news story.

Blogger Nate September 29, 2017 8:59 AM

I will say a couple of the puzzle pieces fit together better if this story is accurate. The NFL's response for example... "Unity" was the message over and over and over again.

Team after team decided what they would do as a team and did it as a team.

If one considers that that was not a response to the president... but a response to the Raiders... suddenly this makes a lot more sense.

Blogger Cail Corishev September 29, 2017 9:00 AM

Redskins fans have been trying to figure out what happened in that game. There have been signs that their defense has improved from its "historically bad" level of last year, but they didn't think it was anywhere near world-beating, and the Oakland offense was considered one of the best. Now they've been wondering whether they dare get their hopes up that their defense is genuinely good, or this was a fluke. Sometimes a team just has a bad game, after all.

They won't like this very much.

@31 Steve

I saw the first set of tweets around 30 minutes after they went up. I was pretty sure what he was going to do. 6 hours later, he sprung the trap: Moral High-ground the Flag right into Gold Star Family weekend.

This was a well-planned Operation, but Trump had to wait on the timing. Let the topic come back up and do the first attack. (While also hitting the NBA at the same time. It was two culture war points at once.) Let Twitter & Media go nuts for 5 hours, then high-ground them on the Flag. Run follow-up shots at it for a while.

It's Culture War red meat, but the kneel thing had already established itself as a focal point of the problems with the NFL. (Or more everything that led to this point.) It also let Trump zing the NFL Owners and make them look impotent in the process. (Remember, NFL teams are expensive toys to these Men, and Trump mocked their toy. It was a pure Chad maneuver.) Since NFL watchers are most of Trump's base, what did he do? He waded into the Culture War from a position of Strength for his base.

The man is always planning.

They also played much worse for Coach Ditka after he refused to support their strike....Football players are emotional, not long term thinkers. As an attorney, I became aware that most players on the Bears spent their year's salary in advance, and ended up with numerous garnishments against future earnings...

Such damaging claims need evidence, but honestly it would not be surprising. The people behind this protest have lost all control of it, its meaning has been completely lost behind their blind hatred of and desperation to be seen to be opposing Trump. They talk about the right to protest and then throw the game because someone used their rights to continue to stand for their national anthem? Just come out and say it cowards and say you hate the country and the people within it, don't hide behind this "protest" BS.

I'm sure the players don't have the slightest clue what it would mean in real terms were they caught actually fixing the result like this. You can ask several different liberals what the protest is truly about and you'll get several different answers, and none of them can provide you with an end game - exactly what is it are they even after

I would not be surprised if it is true though, the level of hysteria is making not very smart people do very dumb things. I don't think the players realise exactly what this would mean were it to come out to be true - FBI investigations, court dates, contracts torn up, possibly even prison time - it would be a scandal.

A 2009 report from Sports Illustrated found that "78% of former NFL players have gone bankrupt or are under financial stress because of joblessness or divorce" after they'd been retired only two years.

Sure, but most of them were never the "millionaire ballplayers" people think about. The average NFL career is 3.3 years, and since some stay around 10-20 years, that means most players wash out in the first year or two. The rookie salary, which they're stuck with for the first 4-5 years, is something like $400K. So most "retired NFL players" never made millions to lose, especially after taxes.

Exactly. You're looking at something like $1.2 to $1.6 million career earnings before taxes for your average NFL player. That's good money, but even if they save half their after tax earnings they're still going to have less than $500K in savings. Even at a 5% return, that's less than $25K/year. It's hard to support a family on that.

A single data point, but something to work with, via http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/nfl-ticket-sales-plummet-179/article/2635955

From TickPick:

17.9 percent decrease in NFL orders this week compared to the previous week.
Last year the drop was 10.8 percent in orders on Monday & Tuesday following Week Three games.

So a 7% drop year to year in ticket sales. That sounds about right. If we assume 50% return once the protests are done, that's still better than a 3% drop in attendance. They'll notice that.

"Personally I know nothing about NFL or the game itself, I would be interested to see an analysis from someone who does though of this game. "

To someone that follows the game closely... and has for years... the claim is on its face... insane. The league is absolutely ruthless when it comes to performance evaluation. Players with games like this on their tape... they cost themselves millions of dollars. So while you always hear team team team from the NFL... in reality the players are very much out for themselves. That's why when the Patriots were destroying the hapless Titans 59-0 or whatever... Keith Bulluck was still flying around on defense making plays and going all out in the 4th quarter. Not because he want the team to win. Because he wanted his own game tape to be fantastic. and it was.

These guys have bills. lots of bills. They have families to feed. You're talking about their job. These aren't 25 year old millennials living in their mom's house tweeting out sjw memes all day.

their cause is $$$$.

yes... there are exceptions like that moron Kapernick... but again... people who follow the league would tell you if Kap were a very good QB.. he would be in the league right now. he isn't. he sucks.

You can be kind of crazy in the NFL as long as you're damn good. Look at Marshawn Lynch.

If you ain't damn good.. you keep your head down and toe the line.

The players are using union 101 tactics. Not surprising at all. This is a quiet strike, after all. As for Federal prosecution for throwing games.....if we actually had law and order....then, yeah. But nowadays we have leftist obstruction, so that's not going to happen.

Deliberately throwing games? Plausible. Would that infuriate the fan base ? Sure. Seems to me that's in the eye of the beholder. That type of thing is extremely corrosive. But, really, it's just part and parcel of what's happening.

The death of a huge organization isn't pretty. Player malfeasance is a real killer. But, you know what....the NFL isn't going to do anything about it. That's why it's dying.

Offensive line is probably the most thankless task in football. A great left tackle can get some accolades and a big contract, but the rest mostly go unsung. They spend the game trying to stop other large men who are allowed to grab and throw them, without grabbing back. On passing plays, they have to do a sort of controlled retreat, which is mighty tiring. They get to be more aggressive and have fun on running plays, but it's a passing league these days.

So they don't go 100% on every play. They can't. They have to pick their spots and save some energy for when it's really needed, when they need to complete a 4th-and-1 run or protect the QB for a long pass. If you watch game film or just focus on the OL during a game, you'll see half-hearted efforts and plays taken off here and there -- not because they're bad guys or not earning their money, but because managing your exhaustion is part of the game.

That means this doesn't have to be a planned event. It can just be a bunch of $1M/year guys kinda pissed off at their $25M/year white QB, and not feeling it as much as usual today. If one line is only giving 80% of its usual effort, for whatever reason, it's going to get run over. And if it was intentional, it'll be impossible to prove it, for the same reason.

No one's going to get cut over this (unless he was on the bubble already), because who are they going to replace him with? Equally disgruntled players from other teams?

I saw Villanueva talking about what happened to the press. Here is what I remembered were the key points about this whole thing.

Villanueva is a Vet and wanted to see the flag.
He wanted to support the team and stay in the locker but... Flag comes first, cause he is a ranger
He blames himself for not telling anyone to go to field and see the flag with him.
He only talked to one person, a coordenator or something.
The team apparently was in the tunnel but couldn't get out to be with Villanueva because a flag was coming in.
So it looked bad... All fault is on Villanueva.

Now either Villanueva is like me and thinks that his predilections are not shared by other people, so he does most things by himself, Orrrrrr... That was just a offense lineman sized middle finger.

I went out for a walk and I started thinking, "Hey, could the NFL and the Raiders be subject to a RICO investigation?" They do seem to be a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization. They committed fraud by throwing the game, they used extortion and blackmail and intimidation and witness tampering to cover it up. Everybody was wringing their hands over Deflate-gate, and this is exponentially huger. I'm no RICO lawyer, but I think there's already evidence of a CONSPIRACY to commit fraud and to cover it up. At this point, I'm disgusted enough to enjoy the idea of the entire NFL going to prison for 10 years.

There are also rational reason to believe the story that go beyond "BLACK PLAYERS ARE SO STUPID!"

Think about it. You're a meh player on the Oline for the Raiders and the Stud... says "we are gonna do this." If you don't go along with it you're causing disunity on the oline. Coaches dont like that. No one likes that. Olines have to be tight.

On top of that the whole oline doesn't have to lay down to throw the game. One guy could take a few plays off... and also just not give help when he normally would.. and the results would be the same.

Blogger Cail Corishev September 29, 2017 11:18 AM

This thing has not ended, there will be more arrogance, and more potential scandals.

I agree. Most of the media isn't asking the kneelers what they want, but just hoping to come up with a way to shift their protest away from the anthem, so whites can stop caring about it. But that misses the point: it's the anthem they have an issue with, becaue (in their minds) it represents racist America. Jerry Jones's scheme to kneel separately and then stand for the anthem is a stop-gap, at best.

On the other hand, people predicting the demise of the NFL are nuts. That's actually part of the league's problem right now: it's so dominant and is such a money-maker for so many businesses that no one feels like they have to worry about that. Cris Collinsworth isn't losing a second of sleep over the possibility that the NFL might fall to the point where the TV networks can no longer afford color commentators. A few lost advertisers can be replaced by extra Budweiser ads. So they all feel free to do what they want, even telling the fans to piss off, without fear that it's going to kill the league. And they're right.

The NFL might slip back some more from its peak (which i'd put around 2005), closer to the level of the other major sports, and have to pay more attention to putting out a good product for its customers, and less attention to political causes. Personally, I'd consider that a good thing. It's not going anywhere.

Blogger Anchorman September 29, 2017 11:24 AM

Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; Exodus 23:2a

Let's see now--when it was just Colin Kaepernick (who's half-white, and was raised by whites) and then a handful of Negroes protesting, it was about individual freedom, and the protesters didn't care about team unity. Now the Negro protesters are the majority, are in favour of racial solidarity, and are intimidating their gutless white teammates into supporting them in the interests of "unity."

These discontented Negroes make huge amounts of money playing sports that were created by whites, in leagues that were founded by whites, and whose financial support comes almost entirely from whites. I dare these easily-led protesters to name another country where Negroes, or an equivalent minority, could make nearly as much money as these individuals, for what they do for a living.

Maybe it's time to give up on integrated sports. If Black Entertainment Television can come into being during a time of Negro success in mainstream entertainment, maybe it's time to revive the Negro Leagues. Whatever one might say about the exclusion of Negroes from the major leagues of baseball, the Negro Leagues and their clubs had a very high calibre of play and were Negro-owned, which is more than can be said for the major leagues since then.

There's nothing spontaneous or grassroots about these protests (see "Soros, George"). I recommend The Flaming Sword (http://muse.jhu.edu/book/10071), Thomas Dixon's last novel, from 1939, about a Communist takeover of the United States, using Negroes as dupes. Dixon researched the novel by looking at evidence of every race riot in the United States from 1900-1938.

I don't "predict" the end of the NFL, personally. But I will say that it is definitely in the possible outcomes, the probability right now is definitely rising daily even if still small, and people who plan as if it isn't are making a grave error. Thanks to the wonders of debt, things collapse long before 100% of the revenue goes away.

The UN hath spoken. YT needs to pay up (even more). Somehow, I imagine most of the NFL (((owners))) will be exempt from this decree.

On the one hand, you think, no way. What sort of professional being paid millions of dollars would even contemplate such a stupid action. And then, you consider that the combination of low IQs and an entitlement philosophy with low short time preferences does make it possible. Still unlikely, but possible.

That's a factor no doubt. The bottom line is that the majority of the owners tacitly agree with the kneelers, and the kneelers know it. If a honky player waved a confederate flag what do you think would happen to him? Hell even a fan in the stadium who paid for his own ticket would be expelled for doing such a thoughtcrime - no refund if not outright arrest and jail.

As noted previously, NFL needs to go even more full retard. The kneeling is still not enough. BLM needs to be hired as "security" for every game to collect the required reparations on YT, and any whites who continue to watch the farce need to be made to pay more - perhaps a special BLM security surcharge on their cable bills. Never help an enemy when they're setting themselves on fire. Instead, hand them cans of gasoline, or better yet 55-gallon drums of the stuff.

Anonymous DonReynolds September 29, 2017 12:58 PM

Back in the "Bad Old Days" this sort of thing ruined several popular sports. Anytime there is gambling, the mob just happens to show up to make sure the odds and handicaps are completely wrong. To control the outcome of the event, different mobs would go to extraordinary lengths to make sure their boxer won the match or their horse won the race. That included sabotage, beatings, intimidation, extortion, even crippling or blinding. Throwing the fight used to border on comedy at times.

Now we see the same subterfuge, unrelated to gambling scandals, but in order to punish those who do not go along with wrongdoing. The old police drama Serpico, comes to mind...an honest cop that does not accept bribe money being isolated and excluded by the other cops. (This sometimes happens to overly aggressive junior officers in the infantry, with fatal outcomes.)

So which is it to be? The NFL must deal with this sooner or later or admit that the team owners have lost their property (and their investments), as the teams have become co-operatives of the players that they hired! The employees have taken over the store and locked out the owner and his manager.

It's my understanding that rumors are swirling that Anheuser-Busch has been voicing their concerns to the league. Since the statement was unattributed, take it with a large serving of salt.

As has been much discussed... if you would bother to pay attention you would know that the NFL arrest rate is actually lower than the US rate. Its much much lower when you account for age and race.

There is plenty to criticize... but this kind of rhetoric is just plain stupid.

No people don't pay attention. People will remember in a year or two that Villanuevo walked out for the anthem alone. They won't remember that he made an apology video for it the next day. The first is salient and surprising, and will embed itself in the amygdala memory. The latter isn't, so it just goes to daily memory and eventually erodes away unless someone reminds you of it.

So, your stats are pointless. What people will start seeing in the NFL, if they don't already, is that it is populated by a bunch of crooked, cheating, wife-beating, dog-fighting, cop-killing, America-hating, racist scumbags who hate White People.

It doesn't matter if it's fair, or if it's even statistical nonsense.

College hoops case isn't about recruiting violations. FBI isn't enforcement in NCAA rules. It's about secret kickbacks to coaches for steering recruits to shoe makers, agents and financial advisors.

The FBI investigation isn't. In Pitino's case it apparently uncovered yet another case of recruiting violations, which was one strike too many.

I wonder if the word "negro" has the same effect as "nigger". After all, both words refer to the same group. Anyone have any idea on this?

Anonymous Baseball Savant September 29, 2017 5:41 PM

in reality the players are very much out for themselves.

I played pro baseball for a couple of years after college and what Nate says here is absolutely right. NOBODY in pro sports care about much except for the money. Minor league baseball is a bit more scripted than people might think, but I know for a fact we could have cared less about the games themselves and more about our own individual performance. If everyone played great then we'd win, if some people sucked then who cares. I would have much rather gong 4 for 4 with a bomb, 2 doubles and a few great defensive plays on the infield and lost 12-1 than go 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts looking yet the team wins 1-0.

If you're Mike Trout or Bryce Harper then sure you can pull O-fers and care about the team winning. If you're the 4th or 5th outfielder or the utility player? Screw it, you want to keep putting on the jersey and getting that major league paycheck.

He's also right about the scouting. On the baseball side, if you aren't playing it's because you suck. I really got into the scouting side of baseball during my time because it was apparent I wasn't going to make the majors and I was able to make some contacts in the football scouting world as well. Kaepernick isn't playing because teams know he can't help them. If he had any kind of skill let he'd be on a team. He doesn't so he isn't.

May they rot in pieces.

Good on the quarterback. Fire the entire rest of the team, better to get the disease out now and start rebuilding than to allow themselves to be slowly strangled to death.

Anonymous Looking Glass September 29, 2017 5:51 PM

@138 James Dixon

Pitino had a "strippers for recruiting" problem running, then the FBI nailed one of his assistant coaches. Caused the AD to be fired, which also means the Football coach is now on the market for other colleges.

FBI got involved in a fraud/money laundering case that just happened to lead to questionable money flows for recruiting. Money to a prospect's family would be unethical but not illegal. Kickbacks & Pay-for-Play type stuff can be.

Youth football is in decline, but remember that only about 30 jarheads survived Junction. In 1954, football meant winnowing first. It had gotten too fat.

Notice that "every" down running backs are now resurgent?

It's because we had too many player slots and not enough qbs. Winnowing is good for football.

"since when did two unknown schmoes with a call in sports / gossip radio show become the Clinton News Network or ESPN?"

I never made that assertion. I correctly stated that these "schmoes" are part of the media, which has been labeled as being the purveyor of Fake News. Pay closer attention.

"heck, at this point Weekly World News has more credibility than Rachel Maddow."

Again, WWW is the media. More Fake News.

"case in point: this very story acknowledges that the whole thing is supposition and hearseay. there may not be anything too it."

Except...posters here are affording the story as being credible.

"that's like, five times more honest than anything you'll hear coming out of Anderson Cooper's mouth."

Maybe, or maybe not. Really depends on one's point of view.

"but go on, PoundFoolish, tell me how advertisers pulling buys for the rest of the season is the NFL "winning" or FakeNews."

Until MAJOR advertisers dump the NFL in rapid fire fashion, until fantasy football outlets shutter their doors, and until millions of men and women engage in an all-out boycott of NFL games and its merchandise, the NFL will continue to be laughing all the way to the bank.

We. Don't. Care.

It’s craven lunacy that NFL executives would consider asking Timberlake back while continuing to boycott all things Janet Jackson in the wake of the duo’s infamous 2004 nipple-baring performance.

Ok, now that we have heard from the manic-depressives, what are the teams going to do for an encore? How long will they kneel BEFORE the anthem and link arms after?

They are stuck in a loop until BLM frees them from their ideological slavery.

This is way more entertaining than football.

Anonymous Wooly September 30, 2017 12:32 AM

Epic thread.

What I want to know is this: is the next EA Sports football game going to include players taking a knee? Are they going to remove our national anthem from the game entirely?

I wouldn't be surprised.

Blogger Thucydides September 30, 2017 1:51 AM

Just wow.

Even rumours of infighting among the team and throwing the game will do far more damage than the kneeling protests alone, it is like escalating straight to a MOAB. This could kill the game far faster than anything else by triggering a preference cascade larger and deeper than the one triggered by the Flag/Anthem protest. People who are more invested in the game through gambling, fantasy leagues etc. need to know that things are on the up and up, if *they* feel like they are being cheated, well.....

And the long term analysis of the league hitting a big wall when the contracts are up in 2022 seems spot on, but once again *we* can help by directly boycotting the major sponsors. The League can live off the fat of the land while their network contracts are in force, but as the contracts steadily devalue as revenues to the networks get choked off, the pressure will rise. If the league tries to blow them off reasoning they are secure until 2022, then they risk some pretty epic blowback from their real customers, the networks.

Help them along......

Blogger flyingtiger September 30, 2017 10:49 AM

I have always contended that the 2013 Superbowl was rigged. Seattle won 43-8 over Denver. I feel that black players for Denver threw this game because Seattle had a black quarterback. For blacks race matters more than the team. When I watched this game, I saw too much that was strange. Too many players out of position. I not a football expert, so if I noticed this others must have. Then again the media covers up everything crime the blacks commit.

Anonymous franklinjennings September 30, 2017 11:46 PM

It's obviously true. The Raiders O-Line ALREADY proved that they would disrespect the flag, the National Anthem, their fans, and NFL fans across the country all because, what, they wanted to thumb their noses at Trump? Or make a statement about BLM? Give me a break. They ALREADY proved themselves to be totally unprofessional, easily goaded into something by Trump, etc. OF COURSE they are capable of more stupid and short-sighted behavior. They are overpaid, undereducated, 'roid raging guys in their 20s. They are supposedly the best O-Line in the NFL, and they botched 3-4 snaps and let their quarterback get sacked 4 times.

The burden of proof is on them. And they haven't met it. Wishful thinking by Raiders fans proves nothing. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it's a freaking duck. These idiots abandoned their professional duty and put their quarterback's health at risk. It's just a fact. SOME people may not want to believe it, but it happened.

What Kelechi Osemele said as he "tried to squash rumors that the Raiders offensive line tanked Sunday’s game in response to Derek Carr’s decision to stand during the national anthem" was a classic "non-denial denial."

“If you guys really believe that… I don’t even know what to tell you. Carr is our brother he fully supported our decision to make this statement we discussed as a TEAM and we all have each other’s back. We’re back focused on working now end of discussion,"

A reliable denial takes the form: "I/We did not reduce our efforts to protect our quarterback in that game vs. any other game." But Kelechi couldn't bring himself to say that. Because, even while attempting to mislead, direct lying is psychologically uncomfortable and we seek to avoid it.

Any good interrogator can look at Kelechi's statement and see that deception is indicated. He shouldn't have opened his mouth to "try to squash rumors." Now he's on record NOT actually denying it.

Sorry, gang. It happened, whether you wish it had or not. Carr knows it. The O-Line knows it. The coaches know it. The fans know it. The team will never be the same. And another chunk of fans will never return. I hope Kelechi is proud! LOL.

Blogger James Dixon October 01, 2017 10:16 AM

> Millions of NFL fans are well aware of the events taking place. They are still coming to the game, still watching the game, still buying stuff online.

Since there are 10's of millions of NFL fans, there's no contradiction between that statement and the fact that millions are turning in their season tickets and turning off the TV.

Which ones will the NFL notice, those still paying, or those not?
