Fire the anthem-protesters

Donald Trump comes out hard against the NFL players protesting during the national anthem:
“We’re proud of our country. We respect our flag,” Trump said to loud applause at a campaign event in Alabama. “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now’? He’s fired! He’s fired!”

Trump said an NFL owner who releases a player would instantly gain broad support across America.

“Some owner’s gonna do that. He’s gonna say, ‘That guy that disrespects our flag? He’s fired. And that owner . . . they’ll be the most popular person in this country. Because that’s total disrespect of our heritage. That’s total disrespect of everything we stand for,” Trump said.

Trump added that he believes fans should walk out if players don’t stand for the anthem.

“If you see it, even if it’s one player,” Trump said, “Leave the stadium.”
It's a perfectly reasonable stance. We all know that the NFL wouldn't hesitate to act if players started throwing Nazi salutes; they already come down hard on the expression of any opinion that is negative about homosexuality.

The Rubicon has been decisively crossed, so it's time to start cracking down on "speech" Americans don't like.

Always play by the rules that are actually in place, not by the rules that you wish were in place. I won't say that I've entirely given up on the NFL, but I did not buy Game Pass this year and I have yet to watch a single game. I don't think I will start this weekend either.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's response:
The NFL and our players are at our best when we help create a sense of unity in our country and our culture," Goodell said. "There is no better example than the amazing response from our clubs and players to the terrible natural disasters we've experienced over the last month. Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL, our great game and all of our players, and a failure to understand the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities."
I hope one of the NFL players calls out Goodell on this by kneeling while holding up a middle finger or a Nazi salute. It would be amusing to see how fast Red Roger would do an immediate 180.

Exactly. The players have a perfect right to protest. However, they have no right to wear an NFL uniform while doing so. They should be fired immediately. If the NFL owners keep Roger Goodell in office, they are endorsing the players behavior and will be committing League suicide.

Goodells statement throws down the gauntlet.

I am saying this to all of you. If you continue to support and watch the NFL it is now just the same as supporting any other SJW cause.

This is not virtue signaling, this is a situation where the lines have been clearly
Delineated. Continued support of the NFL is no longer defendable from an "Alt Right" perspective.

I can only hope Major League Baseball somehow avoids this trap... cause damn do I love Baseball.

What the hell is that supposed to mean? It's not like Football is a religion. (well, I guess it is for some sad people)

It's time for Congress to lift the monopoly status of the NFL—and all sports leagues.

There's that old joke - conservatives think liberals are stupid, liberals think conservatives are evil. And it's true. The problem is that it's exactly backwards - the Left is evil, and the Right was too stupid to accept it, even after Roe v Wade.

We have to fix that.

About those fans . Attendance is down at NFL games, the 49'rs Thursday for example. Yeah, ok, it's the Niners. Still.

Shots of the stadium, like the one above, made clear that attendance was dismal for the primetime game. Despite claims that attendance was over 70,000, anyone with eyes could see that the stadium was largely empty, with even some of the best seats in the lower bowl left untaken.

As SFGate noted, tickets were available on secondary markets for just $14 — about the price of a beer and hot dog inside the stadium. And still, few people found the time to support the Niners in person.

The NFL is converged (has been for a long time actually - since Michael Sam or before). The only way to deal with them is to cut the cord altogether. The dindus in the NFL should follow the lead of the "French" Musloid pop-stah Dieudonné M’bala M’bala, who also does "Roman salutes". It would be most amusing to see what the reaction of the league's (((owners))) would be seeing their golden dindus raising their arms to M'heil M'hammed. Betcha ADL/$PLC/ACLU and (((fake news))) already have a story set up to 'splain it away. It beez a dindu culture-thang that's really is a salute of respect - not the same thing as them evil YT Rayciss raising their arms.

Agreed. Today, for the first time, it occurred to me that the black power salute is similar to the Nazi salute, even if the black power salute is less precise (elbow can be bent, posture can be sloppy, etc.). But basically, they both involve extending your arm into the air and adjusting your fingers a certain way to announce a racially tinged power preference.

It struck me as odd that I never noticed this similarity before. Thinking out loud, I wonder if there's any value in reframing it as a Black Nazi salute.

Trump has done a few people a service, and they're simply not going to understand what he's teaching them. So expect a huge chunk of kneeling NFL players this weekend and it's going to be hilarious how they double down.

Side-point: Trump owned an USFL team. Wouldn't it be hilarious the one to break the NFL would end up being Trump? For as much as he gets in his own way of the Cowboys winning, at least we know Jerry Jones isn't going to put up with the stupid.

As to the interrelated NBA issue, Trump did the GS Warriors a solid. Grandstanding against Trump only risks hurting even the San Fran team. He also just gave them a lesson in business deals.

Blogger Mr.MantraMan September 23, 2017 1:07 PM

Jerry owns the Cowboys. The last thing "America's Team" can afford is to disrespect the flag. Jerry is a good businessman (not a great GM), he gets where the value of his team is. I imagine there is going to be some fiery discussions over the next 48 hours.

The owners have long-ago chosen sides and want to see Donald Trump's dirt-people supporters erased even more than their millionaire employees do. They get to decide who has the right to wear their uniform. Goodell is merely their talking head. They won't be committing suicide in any case, since they can always flee to a country which has a wall and will admit most of them as citizens - taking their booty with them.

Best scenario is that this advances the collapse of the long-standing narrative by waking up some of the clueless idiots who pay the monthly cable bills to fund folks who want them dead. If NFL goes bankrupt, the parasite owners will have to go elsewhere, and the golden dindus would be out of their lucrative jobs. Trump's advice should not only be followed in stadiums, it should be followed in terms of tossing out TVs as well.

Blogger Cail Corishev September 23, 2017 1:31 PM

I've never cared whether they stand for the anthem. I think they're dumb and protesting for the wrong reasons -- white cops aren't running around shooting innocent blacks willy-nilly and getting away with it because racism -- but the NFL's faux patriotism and military ass-kissing also put my teeth on edge. If I tune in too early and catch the anthem, I change the channel or go do something else. I sure don't stand up for it. So I didn't care.

But as far as politics goes, this is a no-brainer for a populist president. The Nice White People who are easily convinced he's too mean or too scary have spent the last year passing "Stand for the flag or GTFO of my country!" memes around social media. While some will think his language could be more presidential, they'll eat this up. And the more he triggers black athletes into speaking out, the more white Americans will realize, "Hey, you know, America has given this guy a college scholarship, millions of dollars, and huge adulation, and he hates it and gives it no credit. What's that about?"

Funny, between this and the UN speech, I don't see anyone here claiming that Trump is cucking the last couple days. Guess they're off for the weekend.

Not exactly, Trump wanted to force and NFL/USFL merger with him as a team owner. It failed. The USFL could well have survived has he not done that - it would have made the WLAF/NFL Europe, CFL US expansion and the ridiculous XFL unnecessary.

The Linemen on my High School football team were already taking injectable Test, at high levels. They were terrorizing teachers, as two of them quit due to pretty heavy every day abuse. They had over 20" arms at 17 years old... not virtue signaling, as these a simply"hate facts."

By the end of my Junior year I was in the same PE class as these football linemen, and had been told earlier that year about there extensive drug supplementation. We went out and threw the shot put and I could throw 5-6 feet further than the strongest of the group, I also had more endurance, but less speed, and I out did them in the weight room by 10-15% in all moves, especially the lifting that involved multiple muscles. My arms were 3.5 inches smaller than these guys.

The varsity coaches were observing all this and were shocked, and asked, "Why did you not go out for sports?"

I told them I was taking Martial Arts and Weight Training hard around a bunch of regional champion Weight Lifters.

Blogger Johnny September 23, 2017 2:14 PM

Football is escapist entertainment. But to get off on it more than just a little you have to choose sides, and that involves implicitly identifying with the players on your side. When they are hirelings there is an element of fantasy in it, no different that the willing suspension of disbelief when watching a movie or reading a work of fiction. That is why this stuff is so deadly, the complaining players make the fantasy element difficult to stay with. Lose the suspension of disbelief and the movie is boring or the game not worth watching.

Right. In the collective bargaining agreement, the players gave the league the right to administer whatever punishments it wants. That's what Deflategate came down to. One judge said the league's evidence on Brady was ridiculous, but the final court said none of that mattered. The league is in charge of discipline, period, whether it's for deflating footballs, smacking your girlfriend around, grabbing your crotch to celebrate a touchdown, or anything else.

But the league also knows its players, and doesn't want half of them walking off the field one Sunday. Fans tune in to watch football, not politics. They won't tune out because some players are quietly kneeling or sitting during the anthem while they're in the kitchen getting a snack, so that could be tolerated. They will tune out if the games themselves are interrupted by protests or not played at all.

Before last season five cops were killed by a sniper in Dallas at a BLM rally. The Dallas Cowboys wanted to put a small tribute to them on their helmets, but the Goodell nixed it on the grounds that it didn't project the right image for the NFL. Okay, fine, but then right after that Colin Kaepernick shows up to practice wearing pig socks and pulls that stunt at the flag and anthem ceremony, announcing he will sit in judgment of this nation until a time when he feels we've achieved social justice. And the league says hey what can you do? Free speech and all. So, THAT'S the image Goodell wants to project?

Fine, go screw yourselves, NFL. Soon this protest had spread down to our local high schools and even to the Boys And Girls Club level. Just super.

Did ya ever notice that when blacks have a problem self help need not apply. Always somebody else is supposed to fix it. That is why they protest so much. It is an attempt to burden somebody else with the problem.

This tendency is so reflexive that at times is soars the height of goofiness. In Chicago blacks are getting shot left and right down in the ghetto. For every hundred black homicides, ninety eight of the trigger pullers a non police black guys. So how to solve it? Deal with the problem in the black community? No way! And, now, for the coup de grace:

...our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the National Anthem. If not, YOU'RE FIRED. Find something else to do!

It's hardly newsworthy to find that mere entertainers grossly overestimate their importance.

The fraction of people's disposable income committed to entertainment is cratering even before its entirety evaporates. This predicts a complete collapse in the entire industry (sports, tv, movies, restaurants, theme parks, etc.) when the Long Boom goes bust.

Blogger Timmy3 September 23, 2017 3:03 PM

Not watching has already happened. What should happen is an advertising boycott. The NFL is more profitable than ever based on perceived popularity. This illusion much pop.

Anonymous Looking Glass September 23, 2017 3:04 PM

@80 dc.sunsets

Football keeps all of the Networks profitable. Putting Football on blast, in a high-ground maneuver to boot, does a few useful things for Trump.

1) His base just wants to enjoy their games, and Trump has now given a faction of the Owners the ability to leverage against the others and clean up the issue.
2) The big multi-national corporations that drive most of profits for the NFL via advertising risk being tied to hard-left causes. This risks their "brand".
3) Americans are still Pro-America, and they want their Leaders to defend America.
4) The more the Hard-Left takes over the discourse from the MSM, the more it alienates them.

Basic Trump Doctrine play: do something that's useful for your base that also improves your long-term Strategic Goals.

NFL players protesting the flag, the national anthem, the police, and the country.....DO NOT CREATE UNITY....not unity of the country or the culture.

When a NFL player puts on the uniform and steps onto the field, he is on the clock and on the job. There is no free speech rights when an employee is dealing with a customer. Nobody has a right to pull a political protest on the job or on the clock, nor do they have any right to insult or disrespect the public or the customers. They obviously lack effective supervision over their players. (Would Vince Lombardi allow this to happen? How about Tom Landry?)

Other than the Super Bowl (and other events like it) the whole thing is mostly ignored and spurious anyway.
The whole 'begin the game with the anthem/flag' routine predates the NFL itself, IIRC it began in 1916 with the US entry into WWI. Obviously for war boosterism reasons.
As other team pro sports came on the scene they adopted it due to ''the baseball tradition''.

Actually sell all tickets (other than season) online at ''market price'', based on the good 'ol law of supply and demand. Team sucks, you can get a 'nosebleed seat' for $5. Team's good, a lower bowl 50 yrd. line seat might be $200 or more. Gate receipts are not a big source of revenue for teams anyway. Broadcast money is king, then 'club seats' (larger, more comfortable, with full restaurant-like food, drinks and service) and skyboxes also with those features and exclusive entrances/elevators, at least a cut of merch and concessions in the stadium as well as (in many cases) parking fees. Like radio rights, they ain't the cake, they're just the icing.
As for the https://infogalactic.com/info/Seattle_Seahawks
The Seahawks are, to date, the only NFL team to switch conferences twice in the post-merger era. The franchise began play in 1976 in the aforementioned NFC West. So you could say they came back to where they belong. And of course, the 1970 merger completion moved 3 NFL/C teams to the AFL/C to balance the two.
Probably few even remember the NFL east Pittsburgh Steelers, nor even wants to (because they sucked year after year back then).

And the owners pay him very well to be the target of all that hate, so that they don't have to deal with it. (Except Jerry, who likes the attention.) They'll continue to do so, as long as he does that job and the league keeps making money. Which it will for the foreseeable future, because even with the lower ratings the last couple years, NFL games are still something like 28 out of the 30 highest rated TV shows each year. It could get interesting if black players are triggered enough to protest by large numbers of them refusing to play.

Or even large numbers of them sitting out the anthem, if it led to even one owner dropping a sanction. Even something mild like a fine or 1-game suspension. That would lead to more triggering.

Meanwhile in Spain, Madrid and Barcelona each try to control local cops.

The State prosecutor in Catalonia told all local and national police forces on Saturday that they had been temporarily placed under a single chain of command reporting directly to the interior ministry in Madrid.

But Catalonia’s interior chief, Joaquim Forn, said his department and the local police, or Mossos d‘Esquadra, did not accept this decision.

“We denounce the intervention of the state to control the police forces of Catalonia ... We will not accept this control,” Forn said in a televised speech.

The Mossos are one of the symbols of Catalonia’s autonomy and for many Catalans the prosecutor’s decision may be reminiscent of the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War and subsequent dictatorship of Francisco Franco, when the Mossos were abolished.

Definitely a winning 4GW move, acting like Franco.

Several pro-independence groups have called for widespread protests on Sunday in central Barcelona.

“Let’s respond to the state with an unstoppable wave of democracy,” a Whatsapp message which was used to organize the demonstration read.

The fact that he is currently sitting on the sidelines is a disgrace. This man is a positive role model for all young boys of color across America. This man has a gold-plated afro pick but has not lost the common touch. He kneels to show solidarity with his slave ancestors and with oppressed people of color all across the world. The Black Legal Alliance fully supports Mr. Colin Kaepernick and is working behind the scenes to secure him several lucrative endorsement deals as we speak. So all those white supremacists and KKK members out there will be disappointed, because Mr. Colin Kaepernick is not going anywhere, and neither are all the rest of the fine black folks who support him and the National Football League. Ya think the romans gave a damn if their slaves were nice people? or if the slaves liked them?

No. They didn't.

Neither should you.

You claim to be familiar with the concept of a role model and then you suggest that you are capable of deciding for your children who their role models will be.

If any of your five children decide in their late teens realize they are physically capable of playing professional sports and they come to view the "gladiator-slaves" who make millions of dollars a year as role models, how will you prevent that?

Be honest. None of your children have any chance of playing professional sports. You might as well say "I'll never let my children look up to Esoteric Buddhists".

No, the gesture in question was not kneeling. Kaepernick sat down on his butt and refused to stand, that's how this got started:

https://www.cnbc.com/video/2016/08/29/colin-kaepernick-refuses-to-stand-for-us-national-anthem.html

Only later in attempt to spin it and to get better optics for the unjustifiable did the taking a knee thing come in, as a distraction and a side issue.

Kaepernick was just another NFL guy til that activist woman got her hooks into him. She already screwed him out of a job with Baltimore cuz stupid tweet.

Anonymous Baseball Savant September 23, 2017 9:47 PM

I'm a much more well-versed in baseball analytics than in football so I deal with this more on an hispanic v. white level, but I've noticed for awhile that the more spicked up a team is the more likely they are to lose games. There isn't nearly the prevalence of black athletes in baseball as their used to be but that was fro the most part because of the spic invasion and baseball franchises being able to buy these kids for 10K down in the Dominican when they were 14 instead of paying black American kids draft slot money which they would never see return on.

last year when the cubs played the indians I remarked to my wife that there was no way Cleveland would hold serve even up 3-1. The team had too many spanish players. Now granted the Cubs had their fair share (Javier Baez for all his talent is a cancer no question) but the core was Bryant, Rizzo, Schwarber, Zobrist, Lester, Arietta, Ross & Lackey. All white guys. The Tribe had guys like Mike Napoli, Corey Kluber, & Jason Kipnis but a lot of their media attention guys were guys like Lindor, Ramirez, Santana, Carrasco & Salazar. To be fair if you looked closely Jason Kipnis was the dynamic leader of that team, but if you watched, Cleveland also drew heavily from Lindor and that was never going to work.

For the last two seasons I've played fantasy baseball in a very competitive ROTO league and I've won both the past two years. I've done so with only drafting and picking up white players. It doesn't mean anything, but I thought it would be an interesting idea. I might have to stay up on things just a bit more with regards to maximizing my relief pitchers, but other than that it's not a ton of work.

I live in Indianapolis so obviously i'm a HUGE Peyton Manning fan and during the Manning/Brady wars (which unfortunately Brady won a lot of) I noticed that the Colts & Patriots had an awful lot of white guys on their teams. I went back and looked at percentage of plays played by white guys and found that the Patriots were the whitest team in the NFL.

A few days ago I listened to an NFL scouting podcast and they were talking about how bad the O-Line play was in the NFL this year & even in recent time and talked about how the NFL has made a critical error in taking college O-Lineman that are more athletic without the fundamental skills of pass/run blocking because they play more in a spread offense with their hand not in the dirt. The scouts speculated that a more intelligent franchise would take tougher and smarter players on the O-Lien and then there wouldn't be the need for developmental time which NFL franchises simply don't have for this unskilled O-Lineman. Well it was easy to read between the lines as to what they were saying. Tough & Smart obviously is code for white guy. Athletic and fast was code for black guy.

I'm curious as to when owners/general managers are going to figure this out. Whether it be MLB or NFL, I'm curious as to when if ever they are going to figure this out and put together an all-white team. For years the standard bearer at T has been Joe Thomas, white guy. Marshal Yanda is considered the best guard in the NFL. White guy. Or even Zach Martin, white guy. Most think Travis Frederick is the best C, white guy. The best QBs are white guys. The best TEs are white guys. The best FBs are white guys. The best D-Lineman (JJ Watt) white guy. The best LB in a lot of people's minds is Luke Kuechly, white guy. A lot of people think Harrison Smith is the best safety, white guy. Almost every position in baseball has a white guy as the best player. The best pitchers are white guys. There aren't nearly as many white guys on injury lists either in my opinion. Granted, white guys haven't completely dominated the receiver position or CB, but give the WR argument to Peyton Manning or Tom Brady? They made a living off winning tons of games with small white WRs.

There is a lot of generalizations there, but it's noticeable enough

Anonymous Baseball Savant September 23, 2017 9:48 PM

cont.

that some enterprising GM/owner who cares only about winning, might think to just forget about having minority players all together. I'd love to see someone give it a shot. They couldn't do it outright and make it obvious I suppose, but if a baseball team went all white and went 97-65 or an NFL team went 90% white and finished 13-3, it would make for a pretty darn good argument.

Why am I not surprised.

One big reason there are so many busts in the NFL, especially at QB, is that many players just can't learn the systems and process things mentally fast enough. They come out of college with all the athletic talent in the world, but they can't handle the complexity at speed of the NFL. Not all positions require as much brain power as others, but very few can be dummies.

Listen to Chris Cooley's film breakdown of the Redskins' performance each week, and you'll never think it's a simpleton's game again. The TV/radio broadcasters and the guys in the studios only touch on a fraction of what's going on out there, because they're talking to average clueless fans. Cooley starts talking about how the middle linebacker was two yards outside his usual position which signaled that the defense was doing such-and-such so the QB should know that the right side of the field would be unavailable and the RB should know he had to stay in to block and the receiver should know that means he had to go over the top of the defender instead of underneath him.... And they have to keep track of all this in real time, multiplied by maybe a hundred different plays with different configurations.

Yeah, it's a sport for dumb meatheads, all right.

I hope you're talking about something like HEMA, not modern sport fencing.

It's too bad most of those sports are incredibly dull to watch more often than every 4 years or so unless you're a competitor in a similar sport yourself. And the entertaining fighting sports are so hard on the competitors' bodies that they're not at all well suited for weekly entertainment.

Anonymous Pitchfork Rebel September 23, 2017 11:02 PM

Let's be quite blunt here. Roger represents a business where the requirements of its "game" favors blacks-twenty four years passed between Craig James and Peyton Hillis gaining 1000 rushing yards. The last white corner back was Jason Sehorn in 2002. Other than quarterback, place kicker and punter, ever other position is overwhelmingly or exclusively the domain by men of African ancestry.

Add to that increasing evidence that it doesn't take a decade or more in the NFL to acquire CTE-he knows that the future will be completely populated by physically gifted individuals whose parents are low-IQ types who will allow their kids to buy a ticket in the dementia lottery-in the hope that they won't be one of the high school wonders who don't make it in college or one of the college wonders who is remembered as a washout. Those kids are disproportionately from places represented by the likes of Maxine Waters.

His slobbering sanctimony is just meant to conceal the fact that the mostly black players go to war on Sunday but the white owners go to the bank together on Monday.

The other problem is Africans IN America aren't really exposed to baseball much. Many are in African zones in cities where available land for a ballfield is scarce. Plus baseball fields are rather costly to maintain for playing condition, with the mowing, fencing, benches and dirt infields. As well as keeping the trash, broken glass and used needles cleared out for play. And as African areas amply demonstrate, Africans will trash and destroy stuff just because it's there and something to destroy. It's less costly to set up say, eight basketball courts in the space for one baseball field - and easier (cheaper) to maintain.

Well, many of our Blacks ain't Black. We must needs genes testing to prove total Blackness, as too many mulattoes faking Blackness. Gives them too much IQ advantage over real Blacks, so only imported sub-Saharan Blacks should be allowed to play in the NFL, and the sort-of-Blacks needs to get a lobe job to equalize. Egalitarianism is all.

American so-called Blacks have a 1 D over The real thing, or African Blacks, so this has to stop, and needs to be adjusted. Make it Right!

It could get interesting if black players are triggered enough to protest by large numbers of them refusing to play.

Or even large numbers of them sitting out the anthem, if it led to even one owner dropping a sanction. Even something mild like a fine or 1-game suspension. That would lead to more triggering.

NFL could get even more interesting again.

@117 @125
There is a precedent.

In the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the French team, which was mostly boons, did terribly and melted down in protest and bad behavior.

In the next World Cup, the French team was mostly white.

If there is a mass TNB/chimpout, the NFL and NBA -- if they survive -- may end up making their teams much whiter than they have, as they realize that stacking their teams with blacks is far more trouble than it's worth for the virtue-signaling points.

or perhaps what I should be asking...

@145 Nate
I don't think the Romans paid their gladiators millions of denarii a year. IIRC, gladiators had to fight for free or very cheaply, at least until and unless they became famous.

What's pissing people off more than anything, I think, is the ingratitude. These borderline retarded knuckleheads are out displaying their Marxism for all the world to see, while being paid millions of dollars a year. If the groids kneeling on the field were convicts doing hard time, I don't think people would care. At least not nearly as much.

Human professional sports are a joke for too many reasons to mention, and now they are just another branch of Identity Politics. Who needs two Lesbo (ladies??), running women's tennis, allowing some to get by with 'using,' and others, not so much.

We need Dr.Richard Haier to use neuro-biological tech to up the smarts of chimps, to the point they can learn sports drills. Chimps are totally sadistic so they would meet with sport fans nastiest dreams, and their muscle performance is many times greater the best roid pumped black athlete. What's not to like. Put a 300 pound drug enhanced human on the field with a 165 pound chimp, and the chimp would walk away with the human's head tucked under his arm in short order, no contest.

Neuro-enhancement is the future...forget roids, EPO, and all the other unnamed crap out there. Planet of the Chimps will be the NWO.
