Fire the anthem-protesters

Donald Trump comes out hard against the NFL players protesting during the national anthem:
“We’re proud of our country. We respect our flag,” Trump said to loud applause at a campaign event in Alabama. “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now’? He’s fired! He’s fired!”

Trump said an NFL owner who releases a player would instantly gain broad support across America.

“Some owner’s gonna do that. He’s gonna say, ‘That guy that disrespects our flag? He’s fired. And that owner . . . they’ll be the most popular person in this country. Because that’s total disrespect of our heritage. That’s total disrespect of everything we stand for,” Trump said.

Trump added that he believes fans should walk out if players don’t stand for the anthem.

“If you see it, even if it’s one player,” Trump said, “Leave the stadium.”
It's a perfectly reasonable stance. We all know that the NFL wouldn't hesitate to act if players started throwing Nazi salutes; they already come down hard on the expression of any opinion that is negative about homosexuality.

The Rubicon has been decisively crossed, so it's time to start cracking down on "speech" Americans don't like.

Always play by the rules that are actually in place, not by the rules that you wish were in place. I won't say that I've entirely given up on the NFL, but I did not buy Game Pass this year and I have yet to watch a single game. I don't think I will start this weekend either.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's response:
The NFL and our players are at our best when we help create a sense of unity in our country and our culture," Goodell said. "There is no better example than the amazing response from our clubs and players to the terrible natural disasters we've experienced over the last month. Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL, our great game and all of our players, and a failure to understand the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities."
I hope one of the NFL players calls out Goodell on this by kneeling while holding up a middle finger or a Nazi salute. It would be amusing to see how fast Red Roger would do an immediate 180.

but signs and symbols matter

And "Christian Western Civilization", or "values", dictates that you... stand for the Dept. of Homeland Gestapo National Anthem? Who are you trying to fake out? The Security State? Hell, they love it when you get all warm and fuzzy. Probably thinking there is a sucker born every minute.

Maybe you think the Security State is shaking in its boots every time you stand for... what?

Oh... change is coming alright. Good luck.

What do you stand for, as this has not been answered?

"Listen to Chris Cooley's film breakdown of the Redskins' performance each week, and you'll never think it's a simpleton's game again. The TV/radio broadcasters and the guys in the studios only touch on a fraction of what's going on out there, because they're talking to average clueless fans. Cooley starts talking about how the middle linebacker was two yards outside his usual position which signaled that the defense was doing such-and-such so the QB should know that the right side of the field would be unavailable and the RB should know he had to stay in to block and the receiver should know that means he had to go over the top of the defender instead of underneath him.... And they have to keep track of all this in real time, multiplied by maybe a hundred different plays with different configurations."

Sounds rather like martial arts in a large group.

What does this have to do with firing the sons of bitches?

There you go. You'd think a group whose existence and financial viability is at the sufferance of various levels of government, and the willingness of taxpayers to fund stadiums, would be a little more circumspect. Just another sign of full convergence.

Someone is not interested in faking it. You want semiotics? Be that guy in the Nazi picture who is the only one not giving the Nazi salute. I have my reasons to not stand, but I'm not going to fake a virtue signal... because, them.

And that is why you are perma-losers who will never win anything. Even when your enemy hands you a hammer, you are too pure to hit him with it.

There is no free speech when you are in your work uniform, on the job. You do and say what your company tells you to do, or you quit.

I really don't understand these anthem protesters, if anything it is whites that should be rejecting the US flag, it represent an anti white regime that is increasingly hostile towards them.

Do you remember Emily Youcis, the philly pistacio girl having been fired for showing up for a political event away from her stadium job?

Trump's virtue signaling is other than useful to his base. This move has little to do with his strategic goals. The players have the liberty to protest while wearing their uniform, and will continue to engage in this effort. No one is going to be "fired". We normie fans aren't leaving the stadium or the bars or even turning off the televisions en masse if the protests continue. In the end, the NFL is entertainment, not an "SJW cause". Don't watch if you are offended. We. Don't. Care.

Lord have mercy. Just wait until the Ravens & Jags players demonstrate their little "unity" shtick at Wembley.

I'm sure the British crowd will go nuts, showing their "solidarity".

Anonymous Intelectual powerhouse September 24, 2017 9:44 AM

Also u shouldnt use free speech just to unleash hatred especially on innocent people. I dont think anyone using the n word should expect any protection. I wouldnt feel sorry for someone that got the hell beaten out of them or worse. They were asking for it. Racial slurs and hatred in general was not the intent of the first ammendment.

Blogger Unknown September 24, 2017 10:14 AM

Don't be surprised if players, even white ones, take a knee together in solidarity. Team unity is critical in team sports, especially football. There will also be resentment from both players and sportscasters that a politician is intruding on their space. That's all it means.

But, to put it simply, they started it. Twenty years ago you could turn on a game, confident that you wouldn't hear anything about the social issue du jour. TV sports were a refuge from the news, and that was one of the great things about it. We can't count on that anymore, because the players and the sports networks (especially ESPN) brought politics into that world. If they don't like the president doing the same thing, too bad.

I myself refused to stand for the anthem for several years in protest of Obama's idiot wars and illegal drone strikes. Not that anybody knew why or cared. Now I'll have to stand once again. I wouldn't want people to think I believe in Kapernick's BLM bullcrap.

I don't think anyone is actually offended by it. It's just a proxy battle in the greater ideological war. The SJWs are taking a visible stand in what is materially a non-issue, but as with any other competition, you either strike back in response or cede the ground.

As for Trump, it doesn't cost him anything to virtue signal. Nobody who likes him is going to stop liking him because he's ragging on the NFL. And maybe it will wake up some people, maybe this will make some people say "enough is enough" and actually turn off the NFL. Probably not many. But hey, they are already dangling by a thread, so it's hard to say when it will be enough.

But as @218 said, this will probably cause the NFL to dig in. That's fine. Let the NFL drift off into irrelevance.

Won't it be hilarious when the only people watching football are SJWs who have heretofore trashed the league for toxic masculinity, deadbeat players, and being dangerous?

unless they're White. Whites have no 'Free Speech' rights.

go tell Jim McMahon about his 'right' to make political statements while on the job.

You must not know many normal middle-Americans. Yes, many people are offended by disrespect to the flag and anthem. Maybe not offended enough to stop watching their favorite sport yet, but offended, yes. I'm not particularly, but I know many people who have been. They're not just virtue signaling, by the way. Around here, people still stand and salute when the flag goes by at town parades. They care.

Blogger Koanic September 24, 2017 9:27 PM

Refusing to kneel is one thing, but refusing to stand?

That's just lazy.

If you're going to offend people, you should adopt a stance that's ready for a fight.

Anonymous Pennywise September 24, 2017 11:17 PM

Trump, we know, is not a defender of Western Civilization, nor does he remotely care about the cultural wars given he past history of indulging in flesh related activities. Regardless, normies may be offended by athletes who take a personal stand when it comes to the flag, but they will buy tickets, watch it on television, and participate in fantasy leagues. As far "whites having no 'Free Speech' rights", that is observably false, as evident by how white NFL players conducted their own personal business with support from their teammates. Trump's tirade was meant as a distraction from his own ineptness.

Anonymous Ages September 25, 2017 6:09 AM

You must not know many normal middle-Americans.

Um, I am one.

I was taught to, and I do, respect the flag. But I don't buy into the quasi-religious veneration of our national symbols. (I don't even particularly like our present Anthem; bring back Hail, Columbia for a truly masculine song.) My heart doesn't skip a beat when I see Old Glory; that doesn't mean I don't respect it.

Most people I know look at these players like annoying children throwing a tantrum. It's embarrassing. Their stupid petulance is what's offensive to me, and their obvious hatred for the country.
