NFL Week 12

The Vikes won. That's about the extent of my interest this week, but perhaps your mileage will vary.

I hear Case Keenum did so well he got a gift certificate to Morton's (?) Steakhouse.

Yes, the now 9-2 strongly positioned purple people eaters feasted in Detroit this Thanksgiving against the 6-5 Lions who are no turkeys.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys just got done with the worst 3 game stretch in franchise history. Jerry Jones decides to keep the coaching staff intact despite this. Look for the remaining Cowboys home games to be in front of a mostly empty stadium. That will extend into next year big time if the coaching staff is brought back.

Blogger Cinco November 26, 2017 12:22 PM

The cowboys ought to be looking for a new GM. They had Romo’s entire salary to play with and they look like shit.

Anonymous Causal Lurker November 26, 2017 12:27 PM

And the stupid Eagles are 9-1 after playing the first round of "who's your raptor?" with the Cowboys. In the year where people tune out or turn off the NFL, it'd be fitting that they return to the Super Bowl. Maybe this time with Clock Management Skills, the bums.

Ratings could be even harder to come by for the NFL today. Four games with double-digit point spreads; and six more games with point spreads between 6 and 8-1/2 including MNF. Also one of the most traveled days of the year being the last day of the Thanksgiving weekend.

Thanksgiving Day ratings: TNF was a terrible matchup Giants vs Redskins, from deadline.com:

Which is why, with a 9.7 result in metered market ratings, last night’s TNF was down 10% from last year’s Thanksgiving NFL match-up on the Comcast-owned net. However, week-to-week, the TNF of Thanksgiving 2017 stayed pretty steady with the November 16 TNF with a slight 3% bop up in MM ratings.

Of course even with the NFL down 10% NBC still won Thanksgiving primetime with 14.4 million viewers but the margin continues to shrink.

*Checks to see who the Eagles face* Ah, the Teddy Bears. Oh well, I'm not seeing an upset here, but you never know.
Or maybe it's like the WWE and the Bears are designated to win this match. If so, it ties the Vikes and Eagles in both W-L and conference record.

Cowboys fans, it's that time of year again, no playoffs for you, just let December happen and look to next year.

I mentioned that the Cowboys turkey day game was announced (on radio) as ~23,000 in a stadium built for 80k. I think we all have a mental picture of what that looked like.

The NFL will not be relying on the Cowboys to boost ratings:

The Cowboys hit rock bottom off the field in their 28-6 Thanksgiving Day loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The mercifully quick game, which was over in about three hours, scored a bottom-of-the barrel 18.4 raw rating in Dallas-Fort Worth.

The number may go up marginally, should an official rating be released later Friday. That's because the bean counters will shave the programming window for the game down to its exact start and end time.

But still, the rating is shockingly low. It is the worst in memory.

Still, let's compare the 18.4 rating to the past five Cowboys Thanksgiving games:
-- Last season's narrow victory over Washington scored a 30.0 in D-FW.
-- In 2015, the rating for a loss to Carolina was 25.2.
-- In 2014, a loss to Philadelphia scored 26.1.
-- In 2013, a victory over Oakland scored 26.0.
-- In 2012, a loss to Washington scored 24.7.

And so you know: The previous ratings low for the Cowboys this season was 25.2, for the Oct. 22 blowout victory at the San Francisco 49ers on Fox.

Nationally, the Chargers-Cowboys scored a 12.4 rating, down 21 percent from the 15.6 scored by Washington-Cowboys in the same Thanksgiving late afternoon window last year.

Dak started like a bolt of lightning and people may have an unreasonable expectation of him.
Case may be a late bloomer and continue to improve in a measured way.
Time will tell.
I am an Miss. State U. alum and my wife an Univ. Of Houston's.
Regardless of what happens to the NFL, I wish them all success.

Maybe this time with Clock Management Skills, the bums.

When Doug Pederson was hired by the Eagles, everybody claimed he would be an Andy Reid clone. When it comes to time management I have to now give the edge to Doug.

Andy constantly burned 1-2 timeouts a half throughout his tenure as Eagles coach due to how long he took to call in the plays. Doug, even for a first-time head coach, rarely has to use a timeout because he didn't get the playcall in.

Anonymous Numbers shmumbers November 26, 2017 1:35 PM

I often wonder how legit those ratings statistics are. The stats say Rachel Maddow has a huge audience.

Blogger YIH November 26, 2017 1:35 PM

Jamie, I have a very reasonable expectation of him, he's an African QB. You said it yourself :Dak started like a bolt of lightning. A blowout season, then downhill all the way. To be fair, it ain't all his fault, the rest of the team crumbled around him. Maybe next year's Cowboys will be able to rally around him, but it's starting to look like a repeat of the '12 Niners, peak African QB.

Jerry Jones is a case study in why nepotism is no way to run a football team. He refuses to hold himself accountable. He hired his family members for all upper management positions, and they are not accountable either.

Jason Garrett is practically family at this point, and he is not accountable either, or he would never have been hired in the first place with his practically non-existent work history prior to being hired by Jones.

The Cowboys likely will never be relevant again until Jones leaves the earth. If the apple doesn't fall far the tree, which I suspect it didn't, then the Cowboys may never be relevant again for it to matter to those of us currently alive.

Anonymous JAG November 26, 2017 2:21 PM

BTW, the Cowboys ratings are down for more than the usual reasons of the political stuff. The fans have to take action because Jones refuses to fire the inept coaching staff despite the historic failure it is currently suffering.

Jason Garrett, who is proof that an Ivy League degree means nothing regarding intelligence, said in one statement that the team is focused on getting better, while in another affirmed that no changes would be made.

The fans have to revolt. Jones has to be made to decide if he wants to continue the nepotism in front of an empty stadium.

This is a surprise, the Bills are blanking the Chiefs. PLEASE No cat/toast SuperBowl!

Anonymous Hammerman November 26, 2017 2:24 PM

I am also disappointed in carrot tops inability to make adjustments. We keep pace in the first half and keep getting mauled in the second.

Blogger YIH November 26, 2017 2:31 PM

JAG: Was the coaching staff that inept last year?

Blogger YIH November 26, 2017 2:48 PM

At the half, the Eagles have demonstrated that the NFL is not the WWE... So far.

@14 JAG

Are we sure Garret doesn't have blackmail material on Jerry? Jerry + Jason are the 8-8 Kings.

Screw the NFL. The CFL Grey Cup (Canadian football championship game) is on now and it's being played in a blizzard!

Blogger DonReynolds November 26, 2017 6:54 PM

I am beginning to get the impression they intend to do to Jerry Jones, what the NBA did to Donald Sterling. No doubt this is being discussed as a successful model. The hypersensitivity is already in place and the hostility of the Leftist Media and the team revolt against their own brand.

Perhaps Oprah and Michael Jordan are counting their coins to see if they have enough to buy out Jerry Jones. After all, we are terribly short of black ownership in professional sports (suddenly). It is now "their" sports, is it not?

Blogger Kyle Searle November 26, 2017 7:16 PM

I second watching the CFL Grey Cup. It's a blizzard-bowl championship game, which are always amazing, and it's shaping up well so far in the 2nd quarter.

Blogger SemiSpook37 November 26, 2017 7:22 PM

I'm going to third that Grey Cup final. 30 extra yards, one less down, and a metric f-ton of snow is definitely more exciting than the NFL these days. That looks like a hell of a lot of fun up there.

Anonymous neverforgetvets November 26, 2017 7:47 PM

The fans won't ever be back. America knows that blacks hate them, and it was all just an act, must like a black nurse being friendly for a few minutes, until you are zonked out, having a baby, in the other room, or dying...then we see how they really are--and they are like that with their own too (nonchalant, lacking empathy), but they REALLY hate whites...and Asians, and Indians, and Latinos...and...

The NFL will crumble and something else (Rugby or Aussie Rules..something more white or latino, like Futbol) will overtake the NFL. Don't think so? They said LA would always be run by black gangs too.

OT: I was able to call the Michigan v. Ohio State game yesterday when Michigan was up 14 points, on account of the fact that the Wolverines are perennial losers now. My family can attest that I said "losers will always find an opportunity to lose" about a dozen times. So I wonder what is it that's similar between individuals and institutions that they can both become perennial losers?

I wasn't able to make judgments like this before, so the obvious conclusion is that I'm expressing latent melonhead psychic powers. Or something.

Anyway, you mentioned the Vikings so I thought of this :-P.

Blogger Aeoli Pera November 26, 2017 8:24 PM

Which is to say I'm sure this is Minnesota's year!

Blogger JaimeInTexas November 26, 2017 9:34 PM

Cannot watch Canadian football; no cable.

But ... rugby is coming to Houston. I think the first game is in January. Wifey wants to go. ☺

Aeoli Pera wrote:[O]n account of the fact that the Wolverines are perennial losers now.

There's still too much smug coming from the Whore for them to actually admit this. Then again, Harbaugh wasn't able to win big games there, even as a player, so this ineptitude isn't all THAT surprising.

Back to the Grey Cup Final: Toronto is threatening with 1:25 left, after they converted on a Calgary fumble that went 109 yards the other way to tie the game up at 24-24. Pretty damned exciting.

Just to be clear. The field of play is 150yards. 40 of that is 2 end zones.
It is 65 yards wide. More than 10 yard extra than U.S.

In pool hall terms, the difference between 8-ball and billards tables.

I was counting the American end zones in my comparison.

Also, Toronto wins on an INT in their end zone with about 15 seconds left. Even the TSN announcers were questioning why Calgary would throw a jump ball there when all they needed was a short FG kick to tie the game.

Of note: at least 2-3 of the Toronto players mentioned God at the start of their interviews after the game. You usually won't hear that from the "professionals" down this way. Pretty refreshing, if you ask me.

The Cowboys will make Jerry Jones sell the team to a Somali lesbian Muslim... just wait and see. I'm not kidding here either.
