Merry Christmas, everyone

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f] because he will save his people from their sins.”

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

- Matthew 1: 18-24

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

A long story. Bear with me.
When I was a senior in high school, we were doing epsilon-delta proofs in beginning calculus. Integral to these proofs is the mathematical concept of the 'limit' - of what happens as you get infinitely close to something without reaching it. ( 1/x is a simple example - as x rises towards infinity the value gets smaller and smaller but never ever actually reaches zero - the 'limit' is zero even though it never gets there.) No one in the class was really understanding what was going on.
And my wonderful math teacher says, "Don't worry if you don't understand the concept of a 'limit'. I didn't understand it until my senior year in college and I was doing a math degree. Then, suddenly, it hit me like lightning, a bolt out of the blue. Just plug and chug for now, do it mechanically. You'll get it." And so I went on doing it mechanically but not understanding it, and then we went to the next module and I went back to excelling as I had at the rest of high-school math.
The next year I was in college taking the first college-level calculus course intended for math major and I was struggling. I couldn't blame the teacher - he was a full professor, an experienced instructor not a TA, and I thought he was very good. I worked and worked and things just didn't come together.
Then one day as I was walking across the quad, I suddenly realized that I understood the concept of a limit. It wasn't like lightning or a bolt from the blue. It was like crossing a critical threshhold. Before, I had been a person who did not understand the concept of a limit. After, I did. It was such a vivid sensation that I still remember the exact location, the particular weather, the time of day, what I was carrying.
I blew through the rest of my calculus class with an A. I understood now.
Several months ago, I suddenly realized that I believed in Jesus Christ as the Messiah, our Savior, the son of God. It wasn't like lightning or a bolt from the blue. It was like crossing a critical threshhold. Before, I was just someone born into a relatively nonreligious Jewish family with a mild interest in mythology for roleplaying games. I had been plugging and chugging my way through belief, faith, and life. After, I was a different person. It was such a vivid sensation that I still remember the exact location, the time of day, what I was doing. (I was indoors so I don't recall the weather.)
Several of my daily challenges have become much easier. As an example, at a family dinner, my niece, recently returned from her four years at a liberal college, confessed to us that she was having a hard time believing in God. She asked if anyone else at the table actually believed in God and I was the only one who could answer immediately. When I did I must have had the ring of truth in my voice because everyone else at the table, who were still pondering the question and if they had an answer, looked shocked at the simple force of it.
I write this to thank Vox for finishing what C.S Lewis started. For his brilliant simple explanations of faith first, and for his many biblical exegeses second, which start such wonderful biblical, philosophical discussions here third. There's nothing a born Jew likes more than watching an argument (save perhaps participating in one) and so I thank all the rest of you as well for your help.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

We know not what to do, but our eyes are upon You. Lord, remember Your mercies and kindnesses, for they have existed for all time. May Your kindness, Lord, be upon us, as we have put our hope in You.

Do not bring to mind our former wrongdoings, let Your mercies come swiftly towards us ... be gracious, Lord, be gracious to us. Deliver us, O Lord, may the King answer us on the day that we call. For he knows our nature, He is mindful that we are but dust.

It is incumbent upon us to praise the Master of all things, to exalt the Creator of all existence, that He has not made us like the nations of the world...that He has not assigned to us a portion like theirs, for they bow to vanity and nothingness. But we bend the knee, bow down, and offer praise before the Supreme King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, Who stretches forth the heavens and establishes the earth.

The seat of Whose glory is in the heavens above and the abode of Whose majesty is in the loftiest heights. He is our God, there is none else, there is nothing besides Him, as it is written: Know this day and take unto your heart that the Lord is God, in the heavens above and upon the earth below there is nothing else.

And therefore we hope to You, Lord our God, that we may speedily behold the splendor of Your might, to banish idolatry from the earth and to perfect the world under the sovereignty of the Almighty. All mankind shall invoke Your name, to turn to You all the wicked of the earth.

Then all the inhabitants of the earth will recognize and know that every knee should bend to You, every tongue should confess Your Name. And it is said: The Lord shall be King over the entire earth; on that day the Lord shall be One and His Name One, the Name that is above every name.

“Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles—
the people living in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.” (cf. Matthew 4)

Take heart, though you may have trouble in this world, remember and never forget, your Lord and King walked this earth, laid down His life, only to take it up again that all who would put their trust in Him would not die, but have life in this world and the world to come.

Merry Christmas, Ilk! May the blessings of the Lord be with you and yours and may the peace of God rule in your hearts.
