Dame dame dame dame!

To be honest, I wasn't too into this song at first; I regarded it as being a gimmick somewhat akin to Gimme Chocolate. But after seeing it live, my opinion changed completely, and it now makes total sense as one of their regular closing numbers. Live, it's impossible not to get caught up in The One when the entire crowd starts jumping on the "Dame!" or to resist the frenetic energy of the Kamis.

It's a little remarkable to see how the Kamis used to efface themselves in concert, and its good to see that they're now getting their proper due. They know their job is first and foremost to support the girls, but even Leda now smiles a little at the crowd's roar when they know a solo is approaching.

Is American rock as incomprehensible to the Japanese? For instance, do they watch Kiss video of, 'Rock and Roll All Night' and think, "what the hell did I just see?"

I know that's what I'm thinking right now.

The first song of BABYMETAL that I listened to is Karate. I don't know much Japanese at all beyond what I learned in Jiu Jitsu class. I liked the song so much that I had to start researching what the lyrics were in English. I suspect that my Japanese counterpart would do the same for Kiss songs.

Another point is that Japan has been familiar with, and fans of the American Metal Scene since the 1980s at least. I remember when Loudness turned up in 1985 on MTV. They rocked.

Dame is Spanish for "gimme" that makes it funny to me.

Anonymous SidVic January 05, 2018 7:03 PM

wtf WAS THAT?

Blogger John Ziemba January 05, 2018 7:16 PM

Haven't heard the song, but based on the titles above the picture, it seems to be against bullying. "Dame" is pronounced dah-may, and it basically means "no," "no way," "no good." So maybe they're saying ijime (bullying) zettai (totally) dame (no good). C'mon, Vox, have some pity on the ignorant gaijin.

Why is the main singer making the Baphomet sign with her hands throughout the performance? Do they not know what it means or are they sending a message. I have seen too many memes with it lately. This is just too weird.

Blogger DJ | AMDG January 05, 2018 7:20 PM

I always loved the various kinds of metal I heard in the 80’s and 90’s. Even the druggy/doom stuff of the late 70s and the progressive metal of the oughts. My issue was always the lyrics. Too much doom. Too much violence. Too much sex or drugs or nihilism or injustice narrative. It was just depressing to me and I’ve always been a bit of a garbage in garbage out guy. But the music!!! I couldn’t get enough of it. Even more so when I found thrash.

I’d have to take it in phases. Eventually the lyrics would get to me and I’d have to take breaks. I did eventually embrace some great inturmental “metal” / progressive rock like Vai, Satriani, and others...but it was never as good as ProPain, DRI, Metallica, or Anthrax.

But I can listen to Babymetal decry bullying or demanding chocolate all day long. And it’s 10x better than BodyCount.

Alright, still don't get this, but to each his own.

Vox, you apparently have at least some quality metal over in Italy from the scraps that make their way over here. FENRIVER had a great EP called "Delta" last year. GORILLA PULP dropped a new album last year, and before that "Peyote Queen" proved hours of repeatable listening.

Do metal concerts have draw over there, or are they just playing bars to a couple dozen folks? Usually, the northern Europeans get the metal credit, but...a few albums are starting to get some attention.

They are not horns, they are the sign of the Fox.

"They are not horns, they are the sign of the Fox.

Kitsune da o!"

Sometimes I get really confused as to what on Earth Vox is thinking.

Then I remember he's a weeb... and I'm still confused, but at least I have some sort of explanation for the madness.

"Another point is that Japan has been familiar with, and fans of the American Metal Scene since the 1980s at least."

Most Euro bands, and a large portion of American bands, still do special Japan/Korea releases. It's understandable, but annoying.

You know, I liked this one. That 12-year-old has quite a voice and the instrumentals are absolutely perfect. I only wish they'd cut out the interjections by the two dancers.

The most shocking thing you wrote above is "I wasn't too into this song at first."

If you weren't so reliably honest online, I wouldn't believe you on that one, but that's because this was a grand slam right away for me.

It's kind of upsetting that these Japanese ladies can rock harder than me. Perhaps it's time to tone it down with the classical.

Everybody has to do it when they want to make it big. It also opened with the unfinished pyramid, and the "as above, so below" X. This is all ubiquitous in the entertainment industry, which is inherently Luciferian. (Even many of the Christian bands do it.)

Thanks to Infogalactic, just learned the Japanese word "kawaii" this evening. That word has a lot of meaning. Also learned that at the inception of Babymetal, the average age of the kids was 12, and set a record at their first festival performance, for youngest performers ever at that festival. Oh, and they didn't even know what Metal was, when they were selected by their managers.

It sure is fun how certain ethnicities can learn, real quick.

I just went to IG to find out what Kamis are.

Anonymous GM January 05, 2018 8:56 PM

I taught my three year old the Gimme Chocolate choreography last weekend and I'm getting Babymetal requests daily. The Dame's are our speed, but I'll wait to introduce the martial arts breakdown.

Even worse, Yui and Moa have both been taught how to play guitar. And Moa can actually do a bit more than strum a power chord.

They'll have to move on at one point. I was thinking the singer is getting a little long in the tooth -- maybe 15? Do you know their real ages? Wikipedia is no help.

They are really singing. They are not Milli Vanilli.

Do not underestimate these slanty-eyed nips. As it were.

And their band really does shred. As it were.

This was recorded in 2014, that would make the lead singer, Su Metal, 15 or 16 and the other two, Yui and Moa Metal a year younger.

They have more recent recordings where you can clearly see and hear how they have matured. They just keep getting better.

Anonymous MDZ1985 January 05, 2018 10:23 PM

Su-metal just celebrated her 20th birthday with 2 special shows at Hiroshima's Green Arena, fulfilling a dream of hers. Moa and Yui are 18 and will be graduating from high school this spring.

The Hiroshima shows were intense. Su got crucified again. Unfortunately Yui was sick. Moa did two of their Black Babymetal songs by herself, with the audience singing Yui's part. There are some fancams, search YT or the Babymetal reddit. The shows were called Legend S. It was basically Su-metal's journey to the underworld. She's been reborn (again) as a higher-level goddess.

Anonymous jSinSaTx January 05, 2018 10:25 PM

Believe Su just turned 20. Others should be 18. Saw them at the Tokyo Dome for Black Night. They are great. No clue how long it can go. Su is the most likely if the 3 to continue in music imo.

Reborn as a goddess? They're serious about their metal.

Anonymous Looking Glass January 05, 2018 10:42 PM

Su-metal has at least an octave larger range than you generally expect from the Jpop Vocal Training schools. "Jpop Singing" is fairly uncomplex and precise, but they normally keep it in a range that quite a good number of girls can handle with vocal training. Su-metal has a good set of pipes, but Baby Metal just normally doesn't require it.

However, like a lot of things Japanese, they tend to keep the individual parts controlled and go huge on presentation. For as good of quality of musicians as Japan produces, almost their entire music scene really doesn't allow for much flare. That's probably why Vox likes Baby Metal so much, as they really are something of a fascinating outlier that found a road within the JMusic scene.

I imagine we'll see 1 more full studio album, likely this year, and the associated touring. Beyond that, you never know with any visual acts in Japan. Some never die, but others just disappear suddenly.

Vox, you've mentioned their 'From Dusk Til Dawn' before but linked to a audio only version. On the off chance you simply didn't see a video performance you liked, I think you might like this one:

https://youtu.be/I7ldRU3jxgw

It's made up of editing different live videos posted by fans and does a good job of looking to be a real video instead of someone holding their phone up at a concert. Thought you might want it for your collection if you download these.

Much better version to learn their routines, I'll add this to my dance list. I highly recommend learning their routines it turns into a hour or so workout that is pure joy.

The prior version or the song without pyro or the choreography was ok. This version is more interesting, very inline, (remaining true to their culture), true to their dancing which is true dance, highest standards of choreo) stage props (as always)perfect vocals, perfect and sync'ed movements.

Beautiful.

It is still Christmas for me; Baby Metals Ave Maria to Cornell's even Renee Fleming's version is a delight.

Anonymous MDZ1985 January 06, 2018 9:12 AM

In this performance of IDZ, Budokan Black Night, Moa slipped on the opening run and injured herself slightly. If you watch her closely, you can see she's in pain and wobbles occasionally. On Red Night, Yui fell off the stage (which is why the ugly railings were added for Black Night), but was back out for the next song. These little girls are hardcore.

Anonymous Causal Lurker January 06, 2018 9:46 AM

Kitsune indeed, full of mischief and play. Took me a couple minutes to get into the flow, then I laughed. This was fun to watch, seeing the kits playing while mother sang (as it were), and they had great fun with their audience.

Gotta love the Fox Spirits, even when they play pranks on you.

They're going to have to make radical changes at some point - they can't do the little girl thing into their thirties. But who knows? I agree on Su-Metal's voice - it's really quite extraordinary.
