The one-two punch

I have to admit, I never, ever, envisioned this kind of start for Arkhaven. Thanks to all of you who are making it happen.

What's particularly interesting about this category is that it covers all the normal 24-page comics. So, not a bad harbinger for the coming print editions.

UPDATE: Not, I suspect, entirely unrelated, is the annual report from Diamond.

YEAR 2017 VS. YEAR 2016 (units)

COMICS -9.69%
GRAPHIC NOVELS -11.86%
TOTAL COMICS/GN -9.86%
TOYS -19.90%

People are obviously looking for something else. And we're definitely offering something else.

Awesome, congrats! I bought my copies earlier today.

Blogger Zaklog the Great January 12, 2018 6:34 PM

Maybe you’ll be in time to save some of the comic shops that Marvel has been draining of life.

Anonymous Looking Glass January 12, 2018 6:37 PM

A good start. Congrats!

Congrats Vox. Arkhaven comics will be the new marvel in a few years.

Just ordered a copy of Wodehouse. The sample pages made me laugh pretty loud - Aunt Dahlia was perfect!

I'll accidentally on purpose leave my hard copies where teens and college students can read them. Give them a shot of the really good stuff, they won't go back.

Congratulations indeed. What happens if you keep giving people high quality comics and stories, at a reasonable price? OK, besides making a good bit of coin. People will demand and expect better and read only the good stuff. Nothing quite like gratuitously chlorinating the gene pool, for properly evil reasons.

The Halls of Marvel and DC will soon quake at the *thought* of the Supreme Dark Lord's footfall.

Just like Google.

Soon.

Congratulations, Vox. You and the rest of the team deserve it. (Speaking of which, Gary Kwapisz is one damn gregarious fellow)

Both works are ahead of established, famous franchise in Hellboy. Guess that contrary to Van Sciver's assertion, you understand something about this industry after all.

Anonymous Laz January 12, 2018 7:08 PM

Congrats! Now, can anybody tell me how converged Hellboy is? I'd like to order it too.

Find the older Mike Mignola stuff from the 1990s (Dark Horse). Not too bad.

Congratulations!

If there is a market demand that is not being filled by the short-sighted SJWs!

I was happy to order them both. Thank you for doing this!

Blogger Starboard January 12, 2018 7:26 PM

Pre-ordered Jeeves, already ordered Quantum Mortis.
Congrats on the double win! Still not tired, and still looking forward to the founder of this feast, Alt★Hero!

Will be getting the Wodehouse book as soon as I finish Throne of Bones. Summa Elvetica was very good.

My heartfelt congratulations on your success.

So much for there being no audience for your comics.

Indicative of how the independent comic book shops are being destroyed by Marvel and DC.

How are distributing physically without diamond? Will comics shops even consider you?

Are you doing a print run or print on demand?

You'll all find soon enough. Yes, we've already spoken to a few key ones.

The answer to print run or print on demand is: yes.

I got and read Quantum Mortis. Excellent read, now to go back and re-read the kindle ofthe original. I also ordered the Wodehouse--I have re-read the originals many times. VFM #424

The one-two punch

I know Amazon is saying 1-2 but more of a double jab, right? I mean, come on, you haven't even got warmed up yet.

Next month I'm looking for a real 1-2 jab/straight right or 1-2-3 jab/straight right/left hook.

Blogger James Parliament January 12, 2018 8:41 PM

That was fun, looking forward to the rest of the series.

First comic I’ve ever purchased.

@22 John Cunningham

First confirmed case of Comic->Book synergy. Congrats!

Blogger Bobiojimbo January 12, 2018 9:14 PM

Daimond distributors holds a monopoly on comic distribution, but is down 10%. Yet EVS wants you to work with them and other people talking about starting their own comics also want to work with them. It's also Daimond's distribution numbers that Marvel/DC ise for their sales figures, despite store's actual numbers, and the critics rightly criticize this practice.

I'm no where near as smart as Vox, but even I can see that avoiding Daimond is a win.

Blogger digz January 12, 2018 9:31 PM

Bought the Wodehouse. At this point I am willing to pay for a entire year of Arkhaven up-front just looking at Quantum Mortis. I haven't read a good comic book since I was 20 and I am 36 now.

Anonymous Brick Hardslab January 12, 2018 10:06 PM

I read QM and I read some old simonson Thor on ku recently I tried to read new marvel but it was painful. I wasn't looking forward to the non superhero stuff but now I can't wait.

Anonymous Chlo January 12, 2018 11:30 PM

I’m also new to comics. I’ve never read one in my life. Gave Quantum Mortis a try. It’s was good. Pre-ordered the other as well. I wish you the best!

Vox, if you never envisioned this start for Arkhaven, what _did_ you envision as a "good" start?

Anonymous Matvei Daniilovich January 13, 2018 1:00 AM

Daimond distributors holds a monopoly on comic distribution... I can see that avoiding Daimond is a win.

I am sure Vox has his own ideas about this, but most of the time you are locked into using established distribution channels because the hassle and expense of doing otherwise is so great. Often that is the advantage the big guy has. They can sell more product owing to their distribution channels. What comes to mind here is the big Hollywood studios.

Magazine companies routinely overstate sales if they can. Add revenues are their big issue.

Blogger eharmonica January 13, 2018 1:18 AM

Looking forward to the Wodehouse. Hope it'll be on KU.

VD-

Please talk to Hastur Hobbies in SLC (801) 352-2605.

It is THE Key Comic book/game store in Salt Lake, as well as a key to the Provo crowd (UofU and BYU)EVERYONE that is into gaming or comic books stops by at least once a month.

I bought QM on Amazon, and I think the book could actually compete for shelf space with the 'beautiful crap'.

Blogger Al From Bay Shore January 13, 2018 4:00 AM

Waiting for the print editions. As the mantra goes, "buy two, one to read/ collect and one to trade."

Anonymous Mycroft Jones January 13, 2018 4:00 AM

When I click the Wodehouse link, Amazon says item isn't available for purchase. No links or text that hints about how to pre-order it. Perhaps Amazon isn't allowing pre-orders to Canadians?

Blogger The Observer January 13, 2018 4:36 AM

@41 Ebook sales via Amazon are wonky for people outside the US. Kindle isn't supported outside the US if I remember correctly, and if you can't find it via Amazon Canada you're out of luck. I live in South-East Asia, and haven't been able to get QM or this.

Blogger VD January 13, 2018 5:34 AM

It's not. RIGHT HO, JEEVES is only in the public domain in the USA. Until we receive permission from the Wodehouse estate, we can't publish it outside the USA. We have a request into them.

I've never owned a Kindle, but I think I'll buy one. Does anyone have any suggestions on Kindle or other models? Is there much of a difference compared to reading on a highend android phone using the kindle app?

Anonymous Laz January 13, 2018 9:39 AM

@44. Meng Greenleaf: I don't know about the kindle, but the app on my Galaxy Note works fine.

Blogger James Dixon January 13, 2018 10:00 AM

> I've never owned a Kindle, but I think I'll buy one.

If you want to read the comics on it, you'll want a Kindle Fire. The one I have is the 8" model with 16GB, and it's been adequate for my needs (reading books/comics and playing GirlsXBattle). I think we got it for either $60 or $70. It's essentially a locked down Android tablet. Supposedly you can even convert it to a full Android tablet with the Play store if you want, but why bother?

The 7" model is now $50 with 8GB or $70 with 16GB. The 8" model is now $80 with 16GB or $110 with 32GB. You may want the kid proof case, which is an additional $30. My wife swears by it, but I've managed without one. There is a 10" model, but unless you're into watching videos I'd say it's overkill.

They regularly have sales on them, so you might want to wait for one.

On the other hand, some people really don't seem to like them: http://www.castaliahouse.com/the-kindle-fire-is-a-heap-of-crap/

For book reading, my wife loves her Kindle Paperwhite, and it's display is definitely better for that purpose. But comics are in color, so...

Blogger James Dixon January 13, 2018 10:04 AM

> Is there much of a difference compared to reading on a highend android phone using the kindle app?

Screen real estate. The tablet gives you a minimum of 7" up to a maximum of 10". You would not believe the difference that makes for old tired eyes. Otherwise, it should be pretty much the same from what I've heard.

Blogger Glenn Phillips January 13, 2018 2:54 PM

Congrats Vox. QM1 is a great start. I can't imagine it not getting even better.
