Worldcon doesn't ban pedophiles

Or sex criminals. But they do ban Hispanics. The leading Hispanic science fiction writer - and author of the first Alt★Hero novel - Jon Del Arroz, is banned from attending Worldcon.

Mike Glyer of File 770 saw it coming back on December 22nd. But what did Mike know and how did he know it?
MG: Serious question. Do you have a Worldcon membership?

JDA: Yup, I'll be there. I don't believe in taking my ball and going home.

MG: Goodbye Jon.
Worldcon 76 announced the ban yesterday... for intended thoughtcrime!
Worldcon 76 has chosen to reduce Jonathan Del Arroz's membership status from attending to supporting. He will not be allowed to attend the convention in person. Mr. Del Arroz's supporting membership preserves his rights to participate in the Hugo Awards nomination and voting process. He was informed earlier today of our decision via email.

We have taken this step because he has made it clear that he fully intends to break our code of conduct. We take that seriously. Worldcon 76 strives to be an inclusive place in fandom, as difficult as that can be, and racist and bullying behavior is not acceptable at our Worldcon. This expulsion is one step towards eliminating such behavior and was not taken lightly. The senior staff and board are in agreement about the decision and it is final.

Kevin Roche is the chair of Worldcon 76 in San Jose. Kevin has been making costumes since he was 8, and continues dressing funny to this day.
Personally, I think it is great that the Funny-Dressing Nazis of Worldcon have taken the important first step of banning this straight male author from attending, and I look forward to seeing them take the obvious next step of banning all men and women who are not sexually dysfunctional, don't wear Star Trek uniforms, and shower more than once per week, and finally transform Worldcon into the loving, age-equalitarian utopia it is meant to be.

I understand the theme of Worldcon 76 will be "An Homage to Marion Zimmer Bradley" which will feature the announcement of a new award, The Bradley, which will be presented to the science fiction author who has done the most to advance the vital cause of sexual abnormality in the previous year. The trophy will be a bronze statuette of a crying little girl clutching a teddy bear.

Nominees for the 2017 Bradley Award will be announced in April.

WorldCon's specific "justification" is that Jon stated his intent to wear a body cam to record potential harassment. In other words they targeted him for attempting to document how he was being targeted. I write parodies of SJWs but real-life always out does my fictional creations.

Would they ban a wigger finding his authentic white man's roots?

https://theoutline.com/post/2839/justin-timberlake-man-of-the-woods-pivot

It appears the Overton window opens up lots of comfort levels not previously available. Alt.Right is inevitable indeed, these are just trappings of the margins of change.

Blogger Silly but True January 03, 2018 6:56 AM

Yep. So they will be banning everyone who has brought a camera with them, an act by itself that includes the intent to record others?

Of course not. This is just more reason why you never let them in power, because the rules will never be enforced fairly.

So, we can punish people for intent now?

Are they sure they want to open that particular can of worms?

That description of the chair-person-thingy says it all. I used to think these conventions were about science fiction and meeting the authors, etc. Turns out, they are actually about making your own Furry costume. Or Trekkie costume. Or Furry Trekkie costume. What is it with deviants and making their own costumes like that guy from Silence of the Lambs? "It rubs the Hugo on its skin, or else it gets the Glyer again".

Do you know why leftist hags are so much fun?

Because their sense of humor is so atrophied by having to take things like dudes wearing dresses and "very smart brothers" seriously, that they are literally incapable of recognizing satire or a joke when they read or see one.

It would definitely be entertaining. It's not like the hotel is going to refuse to rent him a room (that lawsuit would definitely be entertaining if they tried). They could deny him entrance to their rented rooms, but that's about it. I'm not even sure they could get away with that, given recent legal precedence.

We have a word problem in that PC correctness does not refer to the person, it refers to the doctrine. There is no word for the people in Worldcon who are doing what they are doing. By comparison a Christian refers to the person who follows the doctrine. If we spoke of Christians in the same way, we could no longer refer to the Christian, there would be no word for it. We could only say they enforce the Jesus doctrine, and then only when they did.

On balance this works to the benefit of the PC crowd because they avoid hostile characterizations because you can't easily name the person. Plus it helps with the confusion that allows them to enforce a moral doctrine even as they suppose others should not enforce their particular belief system.

So, what would be a word. Perhaps we could call them the Political Correctness Doctrine Enforcers. Too much of a mouthful, but it has the benefit that it is an explanation. People familiar with PC correctness would know what you were talking about. Plus for everyday use it shortens easily. They would be The Correctness Enforcers. Or with greater familiarity, Enforcers. This carries the benefit of a negative connotation. People don't like other people forcing things on them. An additional benefit: it is true. That is what they are doing. And it refers to the person, not the doctrine. A PC Enforcer is a person, PC correctness is a secular based moral doctrine.

So what we have at Worldcon is PC Enforcers. Which is okay by me. The freedom of association should include freedom to not associate. Except that in some circumstances it is accepted as bad and illegal. If Worldcon helps people get jobs in the industry and works to mutual benefit of its members in the industry, then it is no different than those old Protestant clubs that were made up of business people who did commerce with each other, and often excluded Jews, women, and anybody else they happened to not care for.

Blogger YIH January 03, 2018 8:44 AM

Seems like Worldcon needs some IRL trolling. Nothing illegal, just a good old-fashioned picket. Signs with [photo of present-day Wesley Cucker] Would you want him around your kids? Bradley was a child molester! And so on. Have someone dressed up as Pedobear. If someone knows Chris Hansen see if you can get him interested in showing up.
Pedo is still a ''scarlet letter'', take advantage of it.
Sooner or later local media is going to home in on it, have a spokesman mention some of the documented problems. When they go to some Worldcon spokesperv, hopefully they'll get a ''no comment''. Or ''No one from Worldcon replied to our email''.

Accurate as far as it goes, however, from Wikipedia:
"Kramer was arrested on August 25, 2000 following an investigation spurred by an anonymous tip, and charged with molesting three teenage boys. The investigation revealed that he had previously been accused of molestation in 1997 before the alleged victim recanted.[11] Before Kramer was arrested, he had a reputation for inappropriate relationships. Yup. Any fandom is gonna have a disproportionate number of social outcasts and oddballs due to either acceptance or simple excess enthusiasm.

The problem in (at least old, WorldCon-esque) sci-fi is that there's this link between the oddballs and all sorts of sexual perverts. I'm willing to speculate that it's a combination of the willingness of the "dangerous genre" to address taboo subjects and the presence of so many high-profile sexual deviants. Assuming Heinlein is barely not across that line, he still wrote some pretty raunchy/freaky stuff.

I went to a local gaming convention about 25 years ago. It was full of nerds and dorks, but they were, for lack of a better term 'clean'. There was a mix of beardy old grognards and boys playing games, and vendors selling stuff.

Out of curiousity I popped into the same convention a few years ago. All the young boys were gone. The old neckbeards playing microarmour had been banished to a side room. In their place was a vast herd of bluehairs, trannies, fedoras, cosplayers and other assorted rabble. The population was mostly people in thier twenties.

i think the mainstreaming of gaming culture attracted the women, and the feminisation of fandom drove out alot of the actual gamers. This opened the doors for the wierdos and creeps.

>Gaming was about 25 years behind S&SF in the transition, yes. It seems to be fully gone too. Anyone been to an anime oriented convention lately?

Just as converged. Where do you think all the cosplay rules are coming from? Also, I actually have a family friend who had to caution her daughter about making sure the friends she stayed overnight with and got rides back from anime conventions weren't lesbian.

Considering the overlap between the conventions and the current Magic pedo uproar, it wouldn't surprise me to discover that a significant chunk of the convention circuit are active pedos. (Yes, we know that about science fiction's past, but what open secrets about science fiction's *present* are being whispered?)

I certainly hope that SFWA has refunded the portion of Del Arroz's membership that is over and above the "supporting" level.

Reducing his membership, without his consent and without refunding his money could easily be interpreted as a breach of contract.

Disproportionate atheism in SF/Fantasy - huh, that make me thinking.

Funny thing, Poland is heavily catholic country, yet my favourite sf and fantasy polish authors: Stanisław Lem - atheist, Andrzej Sapkowski - atheist, Feliks W. Kres - Atheist. Andrzej Pilipiuk - very religious catholic (up to being fundamentalist, saying that inquisition stakes were OK thing), Rafał Ziemkiewicz - somewhate religious catholic. That's 60/40 of authors I consider my favourites, the top 5.

No one of them was involved in any kind of scandal, sexual or otherwise. Till now, that is.

I'd say there is something rotten about western culture overall.

Or, the alternative hypothesis would be that atheists are fine people in mostly religious country, but would create awful country; but then, there is Czechia.

So maybe it's just we Slavics are simply superior.

Blogger szopen January 03, 2018 12:38 PM

But seriously: atheism is correlated with leftism - in US about 3/4 of atheists are leftists. Leftism is correlated with shooting people, mass hysteria, conformism and attackign traditional culture.

I have no way to check it, but I hope that convent dominated bet conservative right-wing atheists would create better results. But then, I am biased.

Nominees for the 2017 Bradley Award will be announced in April.

Is that timed to coincide with nominations with WorldCon? That would be interesting.

Wikipedia states Clarke moved to 1956 Ceylon because of his "interest in scuba Diving" - which is rather amusing. It also records his great love of his life was Ceylonese "man" who was 9 years old when Clarke moved to Shri Lanka and who died at age 30. It'd be interesting to know when Clarke first met him.

OT: Just out of curiosity I was browsing data about Czechia and it seems that claims of "atheist country" are exxagerated. Only 34% declared "no religion" and then additional 40% have chosen "no response/unknown". Eurobarometer found 25% atheists, and total agnostics/atheist/irreligious 38%

Of the unaffiliated, some are definetely not atheists, as they sometimes declare "belief in God" (almost 1/3), "belief in soul" (44%) or "belief in fate".

Interesting.

By those stats you mean high number of irreligious and by former Soviet, also soviet satellites? Not quite.

I'm Polish you know, and here quite a lot are still staunch catholics, even if sometimes I think it's jsut a cultural mark, as many of those "Catholics" have never in their life been in church.

Also Slovaks tend to be much more religious than Czechs.

I mean that the polls exaggerate atheism, especially in countries where people don't like to answer those questions (see: Hussites, 30 years' war, Soviet religious oppression).

If I were Czech I wouldn't want to answer.

Mexicans don't participate in juries, just like how they don't vote. They'll claim any exemption they can to get struck (including not being able to read English) and if they aren't struck, just go with whatever the rest of the jury decides.

They certainly won't do a six month stint on a Grand Jury (which are almost always volunteer, not drafted, in Texas.)

I met Ed Kramer at a party, about 1 year before his arrest. He was a well-known fantasy and horror fiction editor at the time with a >lot< of awards, holding the floor talking about some kind of "camp" he was planning for aspiring young writers. "My son wants to be a writer," I piped up, and he perked up immediately. "How old is he?" Ed asked. "Seventeen," I said, and his shoulders sagged. "Oh," Ed said, obviously disappointed. I wish this was a joke but it's not.

This is pretty sad. I was a big reader of SF back in the early 80's, but luckily was never in the "fandom" or "con" world. Still, discovering the authors and creators of your youth were actually deviants or even monsters is pretty disquieting, to say the least.

The answer is that I don't like the SJW label and I don't think it has caught on with the general population. For that reason I overlooked it. As for where I have been, until this year I can't recall ever seeing the SJW label. While I am old in having contempt for the established order (about 25 years) I am new in having a doctrine to describing it.

Anonymous JeremiahEmbs January 04, 2018 1:02 AM

Pretty petty if you ask me. They couldn't frame him for causing trouble at a convention because he found about the plot against him ahead of time so instead they keep him from conventions altogether for taking measures to protect himself? Lame. It's unfair too, and may constitute a criminal conspiracy, but mostly it's just lame. They don't look great in all this. But in any case trade conventions are pretty boring uneventful affairs and so it seems like they are creating drama at Jon's expense just so there is something to talk about. They should be thankful anybody wants to go to a trade convention anyway. I've been to many and like I said they are boring. I'd rather read a book and will.
