Convergence at the gun store

I'll bet that Dick's Sporting Goods will not remain one of the largest sports retailers for long in light of this utterly bone-headed move by the CEO:
One of the nation’s largest sports retailers, Dick’s Sporting Goods, said Wednesday morning it was immediately ending sales of all assault-style rifles in its stores. The retailer also said that it would no longer sell high-capacity magazines and that it would not sell any gun to anyone under 21 years of age, regardless of local laws.

The announcement, made two weeks after the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that killed 17 students and staff members, is one of the strongest stances taken by corporate America in the national gun debate. It also carries symbolic weight, coming from a prominent national gunseller.

Late last week, after coming under attack on social media for their ties to the National Rifle Association, a number of major companies, including Hertz car rental, MetLife insurance and Delta Air Lines, publicly ended those relationships, issuing brief, carefully phrased statements.

But Edward Stack, the 63-year-old chief executive of Dick’s whose father founded the store in 1948, is deliberately steering his company directly into the storm, making clear that the company’s new policy was a direct response to the Florida shooting. “When we saw what happened in Parkland, we were so disturbed and upset,” Mr. Stack said in an interview Tuesday evening. “We love these kids and their rallying cry, ‘enough is enough.’ It got to us.”
I look forward to the future articles denying that this decision by the CEO to steer the company "directly into the storm" has anything to do with the totally unanticipated 18-percent decline in annual sales in 2018.

“The whole hunting business is an important part of our business, and we know there is going to be backlash on this,” said Mr. Stack. “But we’re willing to accept that.”

It will be interesting to see how long it takes him to change his tune. Notice how it is almost never the founders of companies who ever do anything this stupid? It's always heirs and infiltrators, which tends to demonstrate that those who do not create businesses may understand how to work the internal machinery and manage the processes established, but they lack an inherent understanding of why and how the business exists in the first place.

Wow, I used to like shopping at Dick's Sporting Goods. Used to.

Blogger cremes February 28, 2018 11:05 AM

This is nothing new to Dick's. When I lived in the city of Chicago, I once visited the Dick's in Lombard which is in DuPage County (Chicago is in Cook County). They would not sell me anything firearm related because my driver's license had a Chicago address. I couldn't buy ammo, I couldn't buy a firearm, I couldn't buy any gun-smithing work, etc.

So, they've been on my shit list for a long time. This latest move is unsurprising.

Blogger Desdichado February 28, 2018 11:07 AM

Isn't age discrimination illegal in most jurisdictions in the US? If an 18 year old can legally buy a firearm, but Dicks decides that it wants to institute its own 21+ limit, that could easily make them a target for lawsuits.

Blogger Patrick Kelly February 28, 2018 11:07 AM

I thought they already did this during the last scary looking rifle panic of 2012-2013.

Their pricing and selection sukd anytime I looked there anyway.

Blogger Nate73 February 28, 2018 11:09 AM

I'm always curious about what really goes on behind the scenes and the internal politics of these corporate elite families. E.g. this article talks about a drug overdose, but zero details about the divorce or previous death of the founder of LC that may have led to it:

Blogger Desdichado February 28, 2018 11:10 AM

Maybe they should just remove the apostrophe from the name of their store.

Blogger Jemison Thorsby February 28, 2018 11:11 AM

They first took this kind of stance after Sandy Hook, which is when they went onto my "no-go" list. I don't know whether heirs are less intuitive businessmen, but I suspect those who have something handed to them are more willing to gamble with it politically than are those who personally built something through hard work (and are thus more directly invested in it).

Blogger Crew February 28, 2018 11:13 AM

Let me see. How many progressives and leftists buy sporting goods?

I suspect no where near as many as Americans who like guns.

However, the old statement applies. "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake."

So, let's not help them understand their mistake.

Blogger James Dixon February 28, 2018 11:15 AM

Our local Dick's has a very limited gun selection. It doesn't look like it's ever been a priority of theirs.

For those interested, Dick's Sporting Goods corporate contact list: also has links to a bunch of other companies playing their assigned part in this ongoing theatre production.

They did. This new action applies to their Field and Stream stores. The closest the Dick's has had to an assault weapon in years have been some shotguns with pistol grips.

An FFL has the right to deny the sale of a firearm to anyone for any reason.

Anonymous Anonymous February 28, 2018 11:32 AM

Never really shopped there (they're at the mall and I avoid malls, and they're overpriced) but this is merely one more reason not to go at all. My son mentioned this to me this morning - don't know how many people still purchase weapons and/or ammo there, but hopefully the chain will take a hit. Yeah, the soccer moms will still buy their overpriced yoga tops there, unless their husbands man up enough to cut them off.

They're done. They just lost a huge chunk of their customer base down here. Guaranteed. Even if us right-thinkers didn't buy our guns at Dick's (terrible prices), we would still shop there occasionally out of convenience. Not anymore. Looks like Academy and Cabela's just inherited some customers.

Dicks pulled this same thing in 2012. I didn't know they actually sold assaulty MS-13's again. I would suspect that they don't sell them. This is corporate virtue signalling, and guns are only a small part of what they sell.

No gun person that was paying attention was buying from Dick's anyway. The biggest surprise I have is that people thought Dick's isn't anti black gun already.

Blogger Cary February 28, 2018 12:51 PM

Their Field and Stream stores near me are very similar to Cabela’s and sit right next to a Dick’s. Their AR selection has been limited, but I have found their pricing competitive. Blogger YIH February 28, 2018 1:26 PM

The only reason Dick's sells firearms is because they sell more profitable 'hunting accessories' such as clothes, deer stands, decoys, trail cameras, ect. I doubt firearm sales are much of their business at all - it's why department store chains have shrunk offerings or discontinued firearms.
Like others have said, Dick's should just drop them altogether, considering most are in malls, their landlords would be happy it if they did (although considering the condition many malls are in these days, beggars can't be choosers).

Many years ago, for decades there was a great, and large, independent sporting goods store in Fremont, CA call Tri-City Sporting Goods. They had a great gun dept with "gun sales" 300 days of the year. At some point they stopped selling guns and essentially became a "JCPenny" for sports apparel. They went out of business twelve years ago.

Blogger Noah B. February 28, 2018 2:16 PM

Last time I went to a Dick's was in 2009. I bought a pair of Merrell hiking shoes that the salesman said were the best they had. And they were extremely comfortable. Trouble was, the things literally came apart on a 15 mile trail hike. For the last couple of miles it was so bad that I had to switch to my Crocs. Dick's would not take the shoes back. So after that I decided I was done with them.

Blogger Hammerli 280 February 28, 2018 4:08 PM

I think Trump may find out shortly the limits of his authority.

WRT bump stocks, you need to remember that the legal definition of a machine gun is set by 26 USC Section 5845 (b).

"The term “machinegun” means any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger. The term shall also include the frame or receiver of any such weapon, any part designed and intended solely and exclusively, or combination of parts designed and intended, for use in converting a weapon into a machinegun, and any combination of parts from which a machinegun can be assembled if such parts are in the possession or under the control of a person."

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms has previously issued written determinations that bump stocks do not fit that legal definition.

Any change in that determination would run into significant ex post facto law issues. Particularly since 18 USC Section 922 (o) prohibits the manufacture of a machine gun for sale to the public.

@83 It's an epically stupid move. Guns are one of the few products that the average person can't have shipped right to their door. Selling guns attracts walk-in customers who impulsively buy all sorts of other things. I go to Cabela's to look at guns frequently; rarely do I buy one. But I almost never leave the store without buying something.

Given the host of companies that are virtue signalling over the NRA and weapons sales, maybe a rumour should be circulated that all these companies are being shorted on the stock market because of the anticipated drop in earnings.

Triggering a mass sell off in the markets against all these companies would be glorious

See if these guys were smart, they'd use agree & amplify. Instead of banning guns, they'd expand their range of guns and even offer "buy 100$ worth of stuff and get a chance to get a free bump stock" or simply go out of their way to advertise their store as a "bump stock friendly zone"

Same thing with that stupid Jeni's ice cream. A competitor can seize her virtue signaling to offer "magnum ice cream now with extra bullets". OK, not the best rhetoric, but you get the idea.

I have a long long memory for this kind virtue signalling from retailers. I never, ever go back, even if they recant. I haven't been in a Target in ages. It would never occur to me to do so after what they did, even if there were no alternative.

This is a shame as it is going to cost him the House (and the Dems will vote to impeach) in 2018 and it will be his own fault. His whole, "You're afraid of the NRA" today when talking to Toomey was such BS. And then his "I'll ban Bump Stocks via executive order" shows he is doubling down. I don't get it. Why is he not smart enough to see what a colossal mistake he is making?
I expected him to sell out a bit on immigration, but not on guns

@36: I've been to one BassPro and a couple of Cabellas. Assuming they're all representative, BassPro is better than Cabellas. However, they don't frequently seem to operate in the same areas. We have a Cabellas, but the nearest BassPro isn't near enough to shop there.

As for Dick's, it doesn't compare well with either BassPro or Cabellas.

Wasn't this the same cuck that banned assault weapons after the Sandy Hook shooting?

More of Trump today:

"I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida … to go to court would have taken a long time,” Trump said at a meeting with lawmakers on school safety and gun violence.

“Take the guns first, go through due process second,” Trump said.

Trump was responding to comments from Vice President Pence that families and local law enforcement should have more tools to report potentially dangerous individuals with weapons.

“Allow due process so no one’s rights are trampled, but the ability to go to court, obtain an order and then collect not only the firearms but any weapons,” Pence said.

“Or, Mike, take the firearms first, and then go to court,” Trump responded."

@9 "Our local Dick's has a very limited gun selection. It doesn't look like it's ever been a priority of theirs."

My Dick's (er.,. DICKS!) always has a very good selection of handguns (lotsa long guns, but I'm not educated to know what/which). Really experienced staff and ... well... doesn't matter, no more shopping there! (Never bought here anyway....)

I see I left this pass without comment:

> Notice how it is almost never the founders of companies who ever do anything this stupid?

I don't think it's a coincidence that the current CEO of Enterprise is a woman who took over from the founder's son in 2013.

I tried posting this earlier but google/blogspot got caught in a loop after I logged in:

I visited one of their original stores in Pennsylvania when I was there for a family reunion over a decade ago and was very impressed. A couple of years later they announced they were opening a store here in my home town (SoCal) and I was excited. That ended when they opened without a gun counter and when asked said they weren’t planning on putting one in. The only other time I went into the local one was to use a gift card I had been given and the only useful thing I could find was a Nalgene bottle. I haven’t been back since.

Walmart got rid of their gun counters in California but it wasn’t their choice, at least initially. The state DOJ audited them and came up with a boatload of paperwork errors and to avoid a multimillion dollar fine they agreed to remove the gun counters for one year. I guess at the end of the year they did the math and the actual firearm sales were not worth it. They still sell ammo and all the other accessories (unlike DICKS).

Saw that exchange and the obvious creaming of the pants of every leftist in the Western Hemisphere. Methinks the GE is jerking folks around again, simply to get an idea of where the sensible line is. I don’t think what Pence was asking for was unreasonable (re: LOCAL interventions in the effort to prevent an issue, NOT Federal); the “screw due process” attitude from Trump was the usual waving of the red cape in front of the bull.

As for bump stocks, if the ATF doesn’t recognize them as being a legitimate issue, and military types are openly stating that automatic fire does more harm to a weapon that could potentially end up harming the shooter, why in the name of hell are people losing their minds over Trump’s desire to prohibit them?

Trump, the "God Emperor", has now caved on "regime change wars", repeal of ObamaCare, DACA, NAFTA repeal, federal spending, and the 2nd Amendment. Now I'm finally and really done. Vox, your loyalty is commendable but misplaced.

As guns are never off topic:

Any recommendations on pistols and rifles for women? This Glock ( is touted as being a slimmer design for women/smaller hands, but what's the quality like?

Those should be preferred anyway, imo. Firearms are usually fairly large purchases, so why not buy it locally?
Plus it's good to know Pawn Shop guys, It seems.

@100: The Glock 42 is a decent firearm. Glocks are known for being lightweight, reliable, durable...and in desperate need of trigger work. There are drop-in units available. My own carry piece is a Glock 43.

I do not doubt in the least that every major gun retailer has already sent hearty words of encouragement to Dick's Sporting Goods. Oh...Please.....Please.....leave the growing market to us instead. You stick to tennis rackets and colorful tents. All the hippie outdoor types will love you for it.

This seems to suggest that if Donald Trump was playing 3 dimensional chess, he wasn't playing it against the Deep State or the Left. See

@105. freddie_mac: .380 is a pea shooter. I personally have seen a guy take 6 hits from one and it didn't even slow him down. Go with at least 9mm (G43).

Having said that, Glocks are wide for their size, even single stacks. Almost every other sub-compact .380 and 9mm out there is slimmer. Which makes them more concealable and easier to handle for small-med hands.

I would suggest going to the nearest range and actually handling/shooting all the sub-compacts before purchase. You buy the ammo from them and can shoot any gun in their case in that caliber for the rental fee.

Check out the Ruger LC9s. It's 9mm and slimmer than any Glock. *Make sure it's the s version (gen2).

Blogger Duh-ave March 01, 2018 7:33 AM

freddie_mac: For small stature and weak hands the Walther PK380 is hard to beat. The as yet undelivered S&W Shield 380 is targeted By S&W to overtake that position. If weakness is extreme try the Taurus M22 ( no need to rack the slide) but expect issues. Beretta has higher quality flip up barreled semi-autos from 22lr to 380 but I can only find them used.

Stockholders can now sue because the CEO has admitted he is driving down sales and the valuation of the company just for political posturing.

> Check out the Ruger LC9s.

It's hard to go wrong with a Ruger pistol.

Blogger freddie_mac March 01, 2018 10:20 AM

Thanks for everyone's advice and comments -- this will be very helpful when I go to the range.

Blogger MrNiceguy March 01, 2018 4:37 PM

I was also going to suggest the Ruger LC9s. My wife had been carrying one for about 3 months now and loves it. I've found it very comfortable to shoot as well. I was looking for one for myself, but found a deal on a 9mm M&P Shield that was to good to pass up.
The important thing is that she's comfortable with it - shooting and carrying. If she's going to pack the .380 but leave the 9mm at home, better to have the .380.

Blogger Frank Brady March 01, 2018 10:53 PM

@119 Exactly. Contrary to what some believe and posted, with the right ammunition a .380 is very effective against human targets. .380 ammunition from any major manufacturer with an XTP bullet will do just fine. Be advised, however, that a very light .380 can be pretty "snappy" and to some may seem to deliver more felt recoil than a 9MM.
