A negative asset

What goes around comes around. The truth about the dysfunctional, downscale writer Kevin Williamson is that he deserves to die. Economically, he is a negative asset.
Conservative commentator Kevin Williamson was fired from The Atlantic, just weeks after being hired, the magazine told TheWrap.

“Kevin is a gifted writer, and he has been nothing but professional in all of our interactions. But I have come to the conclusion that The Atlantic is not the best fit for his talents, and so we are parting ways,” said editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg in an email to staff on Thursday.

In his memo, obtained by TheWrap, Goldberg explained that Williamson was being terminated over his views on abortion, which have come to wide attention in recent days.

“Late yesterday afternoon, information came to our attention that has caused us to reconsider this relationship. Specifically, the subject of one of Kevin’s most controversial tweets was also a centerpiece of a podcast discussion in which Kevin explained his views on the subject of the death penalty and abortion,” wrote Goldberg.
Williamson even appears to have been fired despite lacking the courage to stand by his previous convictions. There was no "errant tweet", as the podcast footage subsequently demonstrated. So, who led Jeffrey Goldberg to believe that there was? Did he come up with that on his own, or was that an excuse that was given to him?
While Goldberg himself once trumpeted Williamson’s hire from the National Review, the writer immediately drew outrage — particularly over a tweet in which he argued that women who had had an abortion should face the death penalty. Williamson defenders — and Goldberg himself — had argued that his career should not be judged on an errant tweet.
Some on the Right still don't get it. The Left is not fixable. The time for worrying about "the heckler's veto" is long past. There is no public square anymore because there is no common ground. The Left is fighting a cultural war by any means necessary, and even if you're not willing to do the same, it is reprehensibly foolish to expect them to do otherwise, much less mend their ways for fear of handwringing moderate right-wingers following through on ominously implied threats which they are manifestly unwilling to even articulate.

And we are supposed to imagine what happens to us in light of Williamson's rapid ejection from The Atlantic? Where have you been for the last ten years? We don't have to imagine anything. We've already experienced it.

Williamson is, stylistically, a fine writer...Unfortunately, his hatred for his father and the white working class has left him as a "man without a country." As he just found out, the left is strictly for parrots.

Truly the left is not fixable as Vox points out.

The leftist lives in a world of magic where just wishing everyone came into the world totally equal makes it so. They do believe we all come into the world with the same IQ and only racism, bigotry, bad parents, or other excuse stops us all from being at 130 or whatever.

Jesus, Joseph, and Mary there is no way to deal with these lunatics. They believe the most outlandish horse manure and then call us anti-science!!

They believe "global warming" makes it colder! Dear God, why did you make these people?

Oh well, you fight these evil bastards or you watch western civilization die. And the ensuing dark age may never end.

Maybe he should leave New York, so he can go where the jobs are.

The libertarianism/Friedman fetish needs to die. Capitalism is the best economic system, and the only one I want to live in, but there is more to culture than economics.
I would much rather live in socialist Iceland than in anarchic Haiti, even though the latter is totally free of regulations. Capitalist Iceland would be best, but that option isn't available in this hypothetical scenario.

Tribe, kin, family, faith, heritage, tradition, are all important, and Williamson apparently sees those as obstacles to economic freedom. It's all fake virtue signaling, though. If the nation followed through with his chamber of commerce GOPe ideology, he would immediately become a leftist and cower before the underclass mob.

Williamson will just have to pack up his typewriter in a uhaul and move it to wherever the globalist society he has written in favor of will have him. I wish him nothing but future unemployment, struggle, hardship and perhaps even poverty. Welcome to the world you helped create, Kev.

Hasn't been anything to save about The Atlantic in a long, long time.

As for Kevin, when I saw this on the feeds, I laughed. It was obvious it was coming because the Left has no spine for any dissent. Thus, when there was "controversy" the instant he was hired, the end result was an utter given. Beyond the Left being "jack boots, all the time", talk about utterly spineless all around among the Media Class. Goldberg was told to find a way to fire Kevin by his boss probably the day he was hired.

So, this is also useful. It's a bright dividing line in the media space. If you don't tow the entire line, you have no place among the dinner party set. Period.

Excellent summary, except for (maybe) the fine writer part. I'm not a writer myself though so I'll leave any assessment of his skills and talents to others. I've never been impressed with his writing myself. It's hard for me to see much of anything there beneath the undying hatred for his father and his own people. Learn to weld.

Buy a multi-process machine that will let you stick and TIG weld, then learn to use it well (start with stick, and don't move on to TIG until you can make a good bead with a stick electrode in any position).

Buy a torch and regulator set and rent a set of oxygen & acetylene bottles. Learn to gas weld and cut steel with a torch.

The gas welding will actually help you pick up TIG welding faster when the time comes. When money allows (after you have gotten decent with the stick welding) buy a MIG (wire feed) welder. For most things the MIG will be much faster, but you don't want to learn on a MIG because it's stupid easy and you'll never master the other more difficult skills.

People will always need things fixed, especially if/when shit goes sideways.

Once you've grasped welding and are proficient at it, you might want to look at buying a milling machine and lathe. Those two tools will allow you to make damned near anything, especially when taken in conjunction with a good set of welding tools.

There is two lifetimes worth of shit to learn in both welding and machinist work, but if you grasp it well and gather even half of that knowledge unto yourself, you will become an almost indispensable man for your community.

The worse things get, the more your community will need you.

I don't have any sympathy for the man, but the firing itself is absurd.

It's all just the Milo thing again: dig up something from years ago, that anyone who really cared what he thought could have found themselves, and frame it in the most emotionally inflaming way.

In this case, he was responding to the idea of whether abortion is morally wrong and a crime. If it is, why should it not be treated as a crime? And if so, the laws of the land should be applied, including the death penalty (if that is the law).

If one is to think abortion is wrong, it's because it's a living human you're killing. Worse, it's pre-meditated. Worse, it's *baby*. How could that not be be first-degree murder?

But, of course, it's just a matter of taking a piece of that argument ("women should be hung for having abortions"), knowing that read on its own it will trigger some emotional part of the brain (particularly among a largely female readership), and let the outrage works its way to fruition.

The guy deserved it as a form of karma, but it is instructive of how vulnerable you are on these platforms, given the power of rhetoric over dialectic, and proof of Vox's point that you need to be doubling down on your own platforms.

Blogger YIH April 06, 2018 3:10 PM

Back in March 2016, Trump had the exact same problem over the subject of abortion. Like KW he posited that women should be prosecuted for obtaining abortions. It blew over quickly for him, due to the fact that there really isn't anything a President can do about the issue one way or the other. I did a bit of research on the subject and when abortion was illegal (several, though not all states prior to Roe v. Wade) the laws against it treated the abortionist as the criminal actor and the woman as the victim of the crime - never a co-conspirator or criminal herself. In fact, there were pre-Roe cases where the woman tried to claim she was indeed culpable as a gambit to have the law against abortion thrown out or to provide a defense for the abortionist charged.
IOW, the policy KW (and possibly Trump) was historically inaccurate and much more radical then even when the practice was illegal.

Blogger Ceerilan April 06, 2018 4:35 PM

At this point, it really is clear the marxists have no idea how to compromise. For years, they have been exploiting the existence of the odd pet conservative they deign to allow work for them. Now, even these few are wiped from the ranks because the Marxist masters now believe they can go it alone.
