An AD who can catch

I was watching these Saquon Barkley highlights, and they really reminded me of Adrian Peterson, except for the fact that Barkley also catches the ball very well.

Definitely impressive, although the important thing to remember is that AD was doing those sorts of things against NFL-calibre talent, not Big 10-level talent. Then again, they have the same 4.4 40 speed, and Barkley is an inch shorter and 16 pounds heavier.

He sure does look like a man among boys in those clips.

I'm optimistic that the guy who recruited him and the OC who coached him will take Mississippi State to the next level.

There is no such thing a running back that is worth a top 10 pick

Same for OG, but Nelson and Barkley would tempt me to break that rule.

Not in today's pass-happy league.
But ever?
Emmett Smith and Barry Sanders were unquestionably worth it.

A Thurman Thomas reincarnation might be, but otherwise I have to agree. Even then only in the 8-10 range.

Does he fumble at the worst times?

Blogger tuberman April 18, 2018 4:40 PM

I have not watched football games since the early 1990's but about 3-4 times a year I'll go over clips like these to watch the shear talent highlights.

Blogger JACIII April 18, 2018 4:47 PM

He won't last. Someone will break his knees if he comes off the ground like that much in the NFL. He's sudden , but pro linebackers are too.

Blogger Daniel April 18, 2018 4:47 PM

Ahem. Top 10 draft pick backs:
Zeke Elliot - next back taken? Derrick Henry.
Todd Gurley - next back taken? Melvin Gordon.
Fournette - next back taken? McCaffery.
Tomlinson - next back taken? I don't remember.
AD - next back taken? I think Marshon Lynch.

The point is, when you have a legit top 10 back, you take him, because the drop off is going to be big.

Now, some years, there is no back to take in the top 10. That doesn't mean there's never a good reason to take a top 10 back in the top 10. Skipping any of the above top 10s because you don't take an RB early would have been colossally stupid. The Jags rode Fournette all the way to the playoffs. That great D wouldn't have survived if Bortles had been in charge of eating clock.

Blogger YIH April 18, 2018 5:09 PM

He could well be a good choice, the problem for the Vikes is will he still be available by the end of the 1st round? IIRC they draft at 28 or 29 due to getting to the NFC championship. Backs that are good receivers don't happen too often.

Blogger Dave April 18, 2018 5:13 PM

You're not gung-ho on Dalvin Cook? Most considered the Vikings stole him with the 41st overall pick last year.

Teams will absolutely overbid for Barkley.

Now lets list all the guys you didn't name who got taken in the 3rd through 7th rounds who have better stats than all those guys

Blogger Daniel April 18, 2018 5:34 PM

No. Because you can't. Most top 10s recently have been the best of their class. By a lot.

Blogger Daniel April 18, 2018 5:45 PM

Tent Richardson is the only Top 10 back I can think of who was not worth that high of a pick. Terrible class, so he looked great by comparison, and almost everyone had whiffed on Ingram the year before. But one mistake doEs not make a guideline.

Blogger Daniel April 18, 2018 5:48 PM

Just because some little school gus like David Johnson get missed (every 3 or 4 years) doesn't mean that NEITHER Kareem Hunt nor Fournette were top 10 worthy.

I'll weigh in with one even better. David Montgomery. All men appreciate and recognize greatness. Exceptional. Gifted. Barkley has that Adrian did too ... all men see it, recognize greatness. Wanna know what goes beyond that ?

Here is a clip on David Montgomery: worth a few minutes of your time. Not as gifted as Barkley ... but close and got him beat on one thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VX4HcjxCbM

Check out the 3:10 mark: "God is the biggest key in my life. Without him none of this would be possible or even thought of ..." ... But being placed here ... it is definitely fate. I'm supposed to be here right now. Everything that has happened to me is supposed to have happened. The pros and cons and the negatives and positives, they are supposed to have happened. I'm growing from it ... and I'm just learning ..."

Yep, that's god at work. A man who recognizes God ... puts him in charge and does what God wants him to do. Now, that is greatness.

And I'll also take a dig at the little B10, watered down as it is. Penn state ... join the B12 and play real football. ISU ... where Montgomery plays ... ISU last year finished 8-5. Played 4 teams in the top 25 and finished 3-1 (#3 OU, #4 TCU, #14 OSU, #20 Memphis) in addition 5 other teams ISU played went to bowl games (Texas, West Virginia, Iowa, Kansas State, Texas Tech), 3 out of those 5 won their bowl games. And, yeah, 8 out of 10 teams in the B12 when to bowl games and 5/8 won.

Comparing Barkley to the NFL ? How about have him play in the B12 ... have him play OU, Texas, TCU, West Virginia, Okie State, Kansas State, Texas Tech and yeah ... even ISU back to back to back. Now have them play Iowa and then Memphis on their home field. In the B12 ... Penn State would be .500 team. Suck it ... little B1G.

And the SEC has probably got a better argument than the one I just made. The quality of FB the little B1G plays sucks and 1/2 the teams from there that actually go to bowl games ... don't deserve it ... only reason is because the schools are huge and these fan bases wanna escape winter and what better way than go to a bowl game. And yeah ... even if your team sucks and doesn't deserve it. Economics matter.

Not saying Montgomery is as good an athlete as Barkley ... close ... for sure ... but a better human being ... yup ... that's exactly what I'm saying.

What is a Saquon? Is that a made up word, can you use it in Scrabble.

Blogger James Dixon April 18, 2018 7:06 PM

> What is a Saquon?

I'm pretty sure it's made up, but if I had to make up a meaning, I'd argue that it's a neutered Sasquatch.

Blogger SemiSpook37 April 18, 2018 7:58 PM

Proud of this young man. Has made it fun to watch Penn State football again. My concern is what happens with whoever drafts him. I think he could definitely make that initial impact, but the problem with talents like this is that the more desperate teams end up running them into the ground.

He can make such an impact, but my fear is that his career would be wasted in the Factory of Sadness.

If I ever momentarily forget how delusional football fans can be, someone always steps up to remind me.

@17 Bahaha. The big ten that went 2-1 against the big 12. Including mighty 2-7 in conference Maryland beating #4 texas? Bahaha! And 4-5 Iowa (in the deal division) beating ISU? Pass the joint friend.

You can never be certain of the outcome of any given match up. As someone once noted: "That's why they play the game."

Blogger Daniel April 19, 2018 8:08 AM

The B1G doesn't even play the Big Ten anymore. Come on. Nebraska, Rutgers, Maryland? This is Conference USA stuff. Still, the one thing that typically translates, regardless of conference, is elite running back.

Blogger Damn Crackers April 19, 2018 2:07 PM

Villanova won the Big 12 basketball tournament this year.

Blogger James Dixon April 19, 2018 8:04 PM

WVU used to play Maryland every year. Once they joined the Big 10 they decided they didn't want to play us any more.

That's fair enough, but some predictions are less likely than others. Ohio State might go 0-8 in the MAC, but any such prediction should be laughed at.
