Mailvox: Superconverged

A reader has a scoop about DC's Supergirl television show:
Inside info from the set of Supergirl.  It was already converged.  I didn't think they could converge it any more.  But they found a way. In the upcoming season, the heroes and the "good guys" won't have any assault weapons.  They are de-gunning them.  No projectile weapons.  No SWAT gear or tactical vests. They even have a special anti-bumpstock bit of business planned.
This new approach on the part of DC is certainly going to have some interesting implications for The Punisher, to say the least, if Marvel follows suit.

Superbabe is a DC property. Now a days it is easy to confuse the two companies.

Blogger SemiSpook37 April 10, 2018 11:06 AM

You’re crossing your ownership lines, again, SDL. Supergirl is DC, not Marvel.

The convergence isn’t surprising. The quality of the DCTVU has gone down because of it.

Blogger Daniel Bendele April 10, 2018 11:11 AM

Glad they're finally moving in the most logical direction: disarming all law enforcement. Only "bad guys" should be able to use projectile weapons. This is because the "bad guys" aren't actually bad. They're simply victims of racism, sexism, colonialism, and white men in general. It will be a cathartic experience for our society to allow the poor oppressed "bad guys" to vent their frustrations.

Blogger Matt Sellitto April 10, 2018 11:13 AM

One of the episode title names from last season was "Nevertheless She Persisted".

Yeah. Superconverged alright.

Blogger Jeremy Daw April 10, 2018 11:14 AM

The Punisher is a very different kind of TV show and, amongst other things, featured a craven anti-gun senator and a gun-carrying journo who's prepared to argue with the aforementioned senator for 2nd amendment rights on talk radio. To say it has a more nuanced take on things would be an understatement. Oh, and it's gloriously unflinchingly brutal, too. A very... satisfying show to watch.

Blogger Jeremy Daw April 10, 2018 11:15 AM

Par for DC, whose recent TV series have been converged garbage. Marvel has, so far, managed to contain it to their comics for the most part, but I expect that won't last much longer under Disney.

DC TV properties have been bad this way from day 1.

The first season of arrow was very good and the 2nd season was fairly good. Then they went girlpower and ruined the show.

The hot IT girl was ridiculous but the IT person is always a white chick or a black dude. At least she was hot.

The best cop show ever was Colombo. He never shot anyone, never got a in foot chase where he threw the perp to the ground, he never drew a weapon, and he never had a weapon. In one episode he bribed a beat officer into going to the range to take his test for him. I am pro-gun, at least as pro-gun as a "yankee" can be (I draw the line at fully-automatic 40mm AAA), but truthfully it makes for absolute shit television. Maybe, just maybe, this will force them to write a good story.

Ah, who am I kidding.

But cop shows suck now. Just totally suck.

Blogger WATYF April 10, 2018 12:17 PM

This is par for the course. Supergirl is probably the most converged of all the DC TV shows (which is saying something). It moved to The CW after its first season on CBS, and (literally) the very first thing they did was suddenly (and with no story elements to so much as hint at this in the first season) reveal one of the main characters to be a lesbian so they could preach how awful people who don't like the gays are.

I'd agree about the Flash (I didn't get into Arrow) and one thing I notice is that while sometimes (ok, frequently) Flash's writers throw all the tropes/cliches in there's a certain respect and admiration of the source material as opposed to, say, the new Star Wars material which craps all over everything.

Ransom Smith wrote:If you want to talk about a Marvel property that's going to go full Mary Sue, Marvel Studios is still planning on making that "Miss Marvel" movie.
The frustrating thing is that Miss Marvel could be a really good story...

I'm somewhat reminded of the Green Lantern movie which, likewise, could have been great considering its comics. (The thing which really did it in was the poor storytelling: it was as if they had three treatments/drafts and said "let's do them all!" instead of doing one story.)

Crew wrote:What does DC stand for? Disastrous Comics?
IIRC, Detective Comics.

Blogger gunner451 April 10, 2018 12:27 PM

Given the anti-gun feels of the left now that Hogg rules the airwaves I'm not surprised by this. YouTube has announced a ban on projectile weapons from their web-site starting soon as well (which may or may not include Hollywood movies). That said it could work if they came up with some good supervillains with high tech weapons that could destroy the earth or some such thing. Unfortunately for them Socialist and SJWs rarely have a good imagination so doubtful they'll be able to come up with something that interesting. More than likely will create a wyman supervillain that simply gives up when confronted by Supergrrl out of respect for her abilities. Either that or she'll be dispatched to Syria to stop Assad and Putin from gassing any more children.

Culture is politics. Supergirl is a weapon vastly more powerful than an AR-15 and has laser eyes attached which are also vastly more powerful than an AR-15. Lex Luthor needs to make a kryptonite laser or kryptonite bullets to fight her. Removing the human weapons is functionally meaningless because Kryptonians never let humans come to harm anyway, which is why they are tolerated on Earth. Batman does the same thing and somehow his spinning and his cape avoid the tommy guns of his opponents (n.b. the reason machineguns are illegal is 2A was infringed by progressives in response to gangsters with tommy guns which was the response to progressives banning alcohol).

Netflix's Punisher season 1 changed Frank's origin from his family being killed by the mob to being taken out by wasp-y white deep state (involved in Afghan war torture).

Punisher stated in one book that he always saw Captain America as his hero. In Civil War, Cap cleaned his clock after Frank executed villains-turned-fugitives in front of the other heroes.

The anti-heros (notably Wolverine and Punisher are helpful in providing contrast to the goodie-goodies (Cyclops and Cap) and the extremely violent. Even criminals that have 'justified motives' (stealing for their kid's operation, for example) raise the question of being able to skirt around the law, bribe judges, intimidate witnesses etc. Should they be allowed to do this if Cap and company aren't able to 'close these loopholes'?

The politics flow from culture: this is why there's so much forcing in TV and movies of things like homosexual marriage, gun-control, unchecked/unregulated immigration -- this is also why there's a concerted anti-"nationalistic pride" mindset in some sectors [eg education].

Lovekraft wrote:Netflix's Punisher season 1 changed Frank's origin from his family being killed by the mob to being taken out by wasp-y white deep state (involved in Afghan war torture).

I don't really mind the change in origin so much; having the deep-state involved is pretty much a hybrid of the comic origin of criminals and the movie origin of terrorists (much of the deep-state power comes from three aspects: the secret/concealed nature; the veneer of legitimacy; and the shirking of accountability -- the aspects are deeply intertwined and feed into each other). [See Kevin Shipp's videos.]

I'd also note that the baddies aren't WASP-y -- there's no real Protestantism in anything they do, none of that culture at all IIRC.

I've long noticed bad guys being the only ones to have guns on tv and in movies. I assume there are sometimes legitimate reasons for this. For instance, in Die Hard situations, and guys are prepared and good guys are caught off-guard.

Also, it helps avoid the audience constantly asking, "Why don't they just shoot eachother?" when not shooting eachother is necessary for the plot.

Screenwriters don't live in a world where people carry as a normal part of life. To them, gun equals bad guy, unless they happen to be a cop or soldier.

You won't have long to wait.

The Infinity War movies are going to be the end of Good Marvel and usher in the era of Bad Marvel.

The first of the crap movies is going to be Ms. Marvel. I predict that it will meet Marvel benchmarks of quality but the character is fundamentally shit.

Carol Danvers started out her fictional life as a pair of tits in a Captain Marvel onesie. Even the screen writers assigned to that project basically said, we'll have to start from scratch here because there is nothing to work with.

Season 1 of Punisher was quite good. Remarkably un-converged for the current year. I enjoyed both seasons of Daredevil, where Punisher first appeared, even more. The Daredevil character's vigilantism is inspired by his Catholicism, and so far they haven't done anything to ridicule that. (Maybe because Catholicism now has Francis to ridicule it in real life.) Disregarding the convergence of Disney and Marvel, the Captain Marvel movie could be good -- there are enough elements there that hold potential for an interesting story -- the problem is that a converged Disney/Marvel/Hollywood has zero interest in a good story: we saw this with The Force Awakens, where they took a dump on fans via the disregard of the whole extended universe [the books] and then essentially wrote themselves into [several] corners with Mary Sue and the Soft Reboot, and again in The Last Jedi where they took a dump all over everything Star Wars.

(That's the reason that I backed Alt-Hero: I want good stories!)

Quilp wrote:This way she can subdue the "bad" European/white Christian, American, MEN with her Judeo-Krypton values, never dirtying her outfit or bruising her boyish figure.
You know what would have made Supergirl far more interesting a TV show? If they had instead made Krypton a "hyper-masculine" culture with strong societal gender-roles, writing Kara's perspective that way. (It would have given a very different feel to the character, and "made her feel alien" compared to all the other TV characters right now.)

Supergirl is stupidly converged. Jimmy Olsen is not a red headed cub reporter. In the first season they were working on a romance between him and Supes. I forget the term for using your position to score with a chick. Now I would say that he was going to Harvey Weinstein her. Someone must have pointed out the danger of this story line and it stopped. Her half sister has short hair and on a tac squad. It was expected that she would be a dyke. The surprise was that Maggie Sawyer was the fem. This storyline stopped because it was boring.

Arrow started out pretty good, first couple seasons. When Felicity became the nagging fem boss, none of them could do anything right and she nag them endlessly. Epic TV! (not)

Flash I tolerated muh white soyboy pining over his black sister incest plot line, for some reason I can't even explain to myself.

Legends was a femturd from the beginning. Not to mention the brainy professor and his inner black jock.

Never even tried Supergirl or Wakandan Lightning.

Krypton - well, I tried it but it appears they are going to make Superman a mulatto.

Have watched 2 episodes of a show called Legion. It seems heavy handed on stoner imagery. Can't report much more than that now. So far it doesn't have the mega SJW flaws of the other ones . At least 2 eps of season 2.

The Shield was pretty decent - not your typical cop show at all. But that ended a while ago.

I was thinking about the continuing erosion in television while watching the current run of Hawaii50. Remember how the Shield was about a bunch of gangsters with badges? The "good guys" of Hawaii50 do many of the same things or worse with people in custody. Part of the effort to push the window of acceptable police behavior I guess.
