Physiognomy is more than real

It is science. And Martin Luther King's dream remains just that, a dream that is not based on reality:
Unless it involves mocking President Trump’s supposedly “small hands,” there is nothing that horrifies our multiculturalist masters more than judging by appearances.

It is impossible, they claim, to infer anything about how someone is likely to behave by their gender or because they are from a particular ethnic group. Everyone is unique (but also, somehow, equal). Judging by appearances is not just superficial but plain evil.

It will be fascinating to see what they’ll make of the recently-published book by British academic Dr. Edward Dutton titled How To Judge People By What They Look Like, which argues that even within races and sexes you can, with a fair degree of accuracy, infer people’s personalities from appearances. You may even get an inside track on how smart they are by taking a good look at their physical characteristics, according to Dutton.

“You can’t judge people by what they look like! It’s drummed into us as children,” writes Dutton, an adjunct professor of anthropology at Oulu University in northern Finland. “It is utterly false.”

But Dutton makes a provocative case for resurrecting the ancient art of physiognomy—judging character from the face. He argues it should never have been dismissed as pseudo-science. Indeed, his research goes way beyond making inferences from the face. He writes:

We are evolved to judge people’s psychology from what they look like; we can accurately work out people’s personality and intelligence from how they look, and (quite often) we have to if we want to survive. Body shape, hairiness, eye width, finger length, even how big a woman’s breasts are . . . these and much else are windows into personality, intelligence or both.
So many people fail to understand that when I say the Alt-Right is inevitable, I am not merely engaging in rhetoric. I mean that quite literally and I am speaking in unvarnished dialectic. Just as communism is unviable because it denies economics and feminism is unviable because it denies biology, conservatism is unviable because it denies inequality. All of these unviable political identities have set themselves against science, history, and observable reality.

Remember, the red pill is reality.
As Dutton says in his book, the relevant research has been published in top psychology journals, such as Intelligence, Personality and Individual Differences and Evolutionary Psychological Science, as has his own research. This includes a study asserting that atheists tend to be less physically attractive and more likely to be left-handed than religious people and that they have objectively worse skin. Dutton, ever the evolutionist, opines that this is because we have been selected to be religious over thousands of years of evolution. Hence, those who are atheists reflect mutant genes in the brain and people with mental mutations are more likely to have physical ones. This explains their asymmetrical features and asymmetrical brains, leading to left-handedness.
You may recall that I was among the first to observe that atheists are neurologically atypical and that atheism is essentially a particular characteristic of being on the autism spectrum. It's not a coincidence that you can often pick out an atheist by his appearance.

However, the link between psychology, personality, and intelligence on the one hand and appearance on the other involves considerably more than our genes, it also involves our choices and behavior. When we see a man who is slender and clear-eyed at 60, we can safely conclude that he is both intelligent and self-disciplined, just as we can reliably reach the opposite conclusion of a child who is obese at the age of 12.

Interestingly enough, that's how David Stove described the position of evolutionary psychologists like Richard Dawkins in the Selfish Gene. The idea that despite any appearance of altruism, we're all "really" ruthlessly out for #1 deep down in our genes.

This is not that.

It is no secret that a man's facial shape is influenced by testosterone (high testosterone leads to more manly faces) and it can also predict some behavioural tendencies (alpha vs gamma personality traits, and so on).

Recently I read a Vice article about the tendency of pedophiles to look like what you'd imagine a pedophile would look like. Think Jimmy Savile.

Being Vice, the headline wasn't "Why Do Pedophiles Look Like Pedophiles?" but rather "Why Do We Assume Pedophiles Look a Certain Way?" Experience, obviously.

The onus was on our assumptions--which according to the saying makes you-know-what out of us--to explain themselves. I stopped reading when they said we know pedos could be anyone, and that makes us uncomfortable. So we pretend they resemble monsters.

Blogger Howard Stone April 16, 2018 7:40 AM

There is the idea that you become what you worship. Whatever is most important to you in your life becomes your idol. Now, while some people may be predisposed to certain character traits from birth, these character traits can also be developed after birth, especially during childhood when the brain and central nerous system are said to be still developing and the most elastic, and throuhg, trauma, abuse and neglect, people who may have very well developed into normal well adjusted adults, instead develop into something else, and because of the way their trauma damaged their brains, their physical development was altered as well. So, perhaps certain trauma causes certain damage which causes certain mental and physiological characteristics to develop or not.

Blogger 357Delta April 16, 2018 7:41 AM

If the pendulum eventually swings back hard enough the other direction in the future they will laugh at supreme autonomy of the individual, equality, and things like gender fluidity and instead send all of their kids to a physiognomy specialist for evaluation.

Blogger Howard Stone April 16, 2018 7:42 AM

But, there is also some evidence that a persons mental and physical characteristics can change through the later years in life, and it all stems from brain activity. Getting back to becoming what you worship. Certain activities, thoughts, obsessions will change a person overtime.

So in essence, a person can traumatize themselves. That’s why the Bible commands us not to entertain sin. By engaging uncertain sins, we are in a sense rewriting our brains and that internal change will eventually
Manifest itself through our physical appearance as well. That’s why sin is sin, you cannot sin without it affecting you and those around you. It’s like being exposed to radiation.

This is a good sign. It means they are scared enough to obliquely admit that there's a problem (for them); namely, that people are learning to identify what "natural" pedophiles look like. The "natural" pedophiles will always occupy the lowest rungs on the Satanic child-trafficking organizations... and thus will be most likely to turn state's evidence on their supereriors in exchange for lighter sentencing.

I'll be interested in reading this book, however... my best guess from the article is that RACE is not touched, hence:

"Women with large buttocks were found to be introverted, self-abasing, and high in guilt."

Clearly CLEARLY not true for black women.

On the other hand, that bit o' "science" is referenced to this (((scientist))) in this (((editor's))) book:
"[Attribution of choice, by I. Steiner, 1980. In Fishbein, M. (Ed). Progress in Social Psychology, Volume I. Psychology Press.]"

And, same "conclusion" in the article in this bit:

"and men who like larger buttocks are ordered, dependent, and “self-blaming.” [Correlates of heterosexual somatic preference, by J. Wiggins, N. Wiggins and J. Conger, 1968, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 10: 82-89.]"

Oh well, apparently his BOOK mentions race, but I'm still dubious about those studies...

"Dutton briefly explores race differences in evolved behavior, highlighting the evidence that blacks will tend to be the most aggressive, northeast Asians the opposite and whites intermediate.

However, he stresses that most of his findings only work within races. A broad face, for example, is associated with high testosterone and thus aggressiveness within a race. But this is not the case between races,..."

"A rhetorical admonition" to not judge content by appearance.

Would it be autistic to note this fits "the link between psychology, personality, and intelligence... and appearance" from the post?

You're self-contradicting. Unless you have a true meaning of "appearance" up your sleeve.

Blogger The Deuce April 16, 2018 9:55 AM

A few scattered thoughts:

1) For those wondering how this fits with Christianity, Luke 12:47-49 comes to mind: "But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked."

God judges you *morally* based on what you do with what you've been given. This point is also made in 1 Samuel 16:7 and Acts 10:34. God isn't a respecter of persons and judges based on the heart rather than the outside of the person.

2) But we're not talking about moral judgments here, in the sense of condemning or exonerating someone as God does, but rather inferring what a person's personality traits and abilities are likely to be based on their appearance. This doesn't strike me as any more problematic than guessing that someone is likely to be able to lift a lot because they've got big muscles.

3) Still, these personality traits are the cause of clashes in a society, and between societies, and it's likely to cause disruption when you've got groups of people who cluster into widely different groups trying to live together. This is no doubt one of the reasons why the Bible says that God has appointed different nations and divided us into them.

Blogger The Deuce April 16, 2018 9:55 AM

4) I doubt that the link between being ugly and having a f***ed up brain with atheism is quite as direct as Dutton says. I've noticed that most atheists are atheists for emotional reasons, hidden beneath endless rhetorical posturing about how rational they are. More often than not, the emotional reasons have something to do with sexual deviancy on their part.

I think that what often happens is, people who become atheists find themselves outside the mainstream from a young age because they are unattractive weirdos. That's also why they naturally tend towards sexual deviancy: They have a hard time procuring sexual relationships the normal way, and so start scraping the bottom of the barrel. And then they become atheists in an emotional reaction against society and its norms, and to rationalize their own sexual deviancy.

5) Regardless, it's clear that being religious is normal and "built in" to humans, and that atheism is deviant and maladaptive. But I wonder if Dutton has considered the philosophical implications of acknowledging that fact.

One of the serious problems of materialist atheism is that it doesn't allow for the existence of beliefs, truth and falsehood, or logic and human reason, and hence the truth of atheism implies that there is no truth and no rational reason to believe that atheism is true. The truth or falsehood of a belief is based on its meaning or content. It's not a quantifiable, material property that can be physically measured, and neither is the content or meaning. Likewise, the logical connections between propositions that we perceive when we reason from the truth of one belief to the truth of another are also not quantifiable or material.

So the atheist has to view truth, logic, reason, and beliefs as "useful fictions" in some sense. Even if the atheist accepts that they exist, he must attempt to redefine them such that they aren't what they seem to be, but are instead epiphenomena of blind material processes. But he also has to do it in a way that attempts to preserve such notions as "useful" somehow, so as not to invalidate all of his own arguments for atheism (This is impossible and atheism is insane, but I digress).

Typically, atheists try to do this in part by saying that our reasoning faculties have been shaped by evolution, and that reason and logic must be reliable guides to reality, because otherwise we wouldn't have survived. But the implication of that is that whatever evolution has shaped us to believe must be true by the materialist redefinition, and whatever is maladaptive must be false. And since atheism is maladaptive, that means that atheism is false even by the material atheist's own incoherent redefinition of truth.

There are (at least) three mechanisms getting conflated here, but that's okay as they all work together in practice.

There's genetics shaping multiple things at once (high testosterone making for higher aggro and specific facial features, or height and IQ correlating in men).

There's learned behavior, such as a woman with big boobs having - all else being equal - higher SMV and learning she can be more selfish (i.e. hold out for a higher asking price).

Then there's self-shaping, how our actions change us. Like the tell-tale changes that happen around a woman's eyes when she's had too many sexual partners.

I had a brief discussion with other commenters both at the Washington Times and here on Vox's blog under my former name BlowMe (a purposely absurd name that was useful when I was in the mood to play rope-a-dope with presumptuous morons, mostly leftists).

The exchange in the Times consisted mostly of a discussion about the findings published in the study. Seemingly nothing "objectionable" which would seem to violate their commenting "guidelines".

The Washington Times was not having it.

I was promptly banned from future commenting and the exchange with the other commenter was deleted.

Argus, that kind of discussion is like garlic and crucifix and holy water all rolled into one for a conservative. They can't even entertain those thoughts.

Interestingly enough, neither can a Social Justice Warrior.

So true.

Argus,

Superman uses kryptonite on occasion to achieve certain objectives. Conservatives have none of that.

A flawed analogy, perhaps.

Apparently conservatives don't have a clue as to how to use a weakness to their advantage, unlike Superman.

Every so often local PD gets bored and goes fishing online for pedophiles, pretending to be a horny eleven-year-old girl. After the round-up, they post a mugshot gallery, and every one looks like his mom drank paint thinner while pregnant.

If these pedo galleries allow comments, there's a great chance to educate the public about physiognomy.

Yes, and also literal mirrors -- which changes how we act, which (along with appearance) changes how we're perceived, which changes how we're treated, which changes how we perceive ourselves and others. Any organic factors are also multiplied by the feedback loop, so "fake it until you make it" can work, within reasonable limits (which gammas ignore).

The part about how it affects how we perceive others is also important. I believe it's why fat, ugly women and weak, ugly men are not uncommonly treacherous misanthropes. (The women are less likely to shoot up your workplace, but more likely to snipe your career.) They're basically just returning society's sentiments with 1000% interest.

RE: Atheist

I am a strong atheist. I wasn't when I was younger. Halfway through my doctorate I had the epiphany. It doesn't seem possible to return to the same state of beleif, though I still indulge in various ideas of simulated reality and, perhaps oddly, live my life in many ways with the same internalized Christian morals - imagining our good deeds and sacrifice are being recorded somehow (hense the aforementioned indulgences).

My question is this: I've noticed many people 'become' Atheistic due to the general beleif that there is no God (in the West). Is this due to social pressure and the need to conform? Or mutation overload? Both?

In the East many say they are atheist, but when pressed it's clear they are quite superstitious. Therefore not really the same type of atheist as I am. Shouldn't they have accumulated as many mutations as we have? If not more?

Lastly, if mutation load is the explaination, why are middle eastern Lebanese so devoutly Islamic? Given their inbreeding, they have objectively measurable genetic heritable damage.

I think there is more to this story, and that it's important we get a clear picture of what is occurring. I'd also like to see if E. Asians are in some manner different. Do their populations show an equal amount of asymmetric features? If not, why not?

Atheism is a mental disorder. Like any mental disorder, it can have multiple causes, genetics, disease, traumatic experience, injury.

Blogger DonReynolds April 16, 2018 8:39 PM

No doubt everyone else has noticed too....that the people who seem to insist that the world is the product of evolution over millions or billions of years on this planet are the same people who insist we are all EQUAL, which would have to be the most fantastic coincidence in the universe! How is it mentally possible to believe in genetic inheritance and DNA and deny the fact that every person has a limited gene pool to pull from...that genetic products (people) result from PAIRS of individuals and only in the last few generations has there been any real variety at all, due to technical improvements in transportation and communication. I dare say the majority of people in this world still live and die within a few miles of where they are born and there is more family similarity between ourselves and our great grandparents than we realize.

Moslems murder infidels. I think that is explanation enough.

I wonder also whether Satanism is easier for genetic atheists to accept than Truth.

Great post VD. I've know that physiognomy was real since I was in my early teens and noted the intersectionality (heh) of physical appearance, intelligence, and behavior. Naturally I was called a "racist" and a "bigot", but never backed down from the empirical reality I know to be true.

Blogger Meng Greenleaf April 17, 2018 3:05 AM

Yes, mental disorders is a large category within which having said disorder may be due to a multitude of causes. But we're speaking of a single type of 'disorder'. Atheism is probably a predilection driven by genetics - possibly due to an mutational overload dis-regulating brain development (or not). While I'm sure there are multitude of causes, it may be possible to control for these and still find a significant genetic effect. That's really my question.

Also, when polytheism gave way to monotheism, Christians were accused to 'Atheism' by Roman and Greek polytheists, mental disorder does not (in this case) seem like a reasonable explanation. Likewise, Shinto Japanese became Buddhist, a different belief system though not really atheism, is this still going to fall within 'mental disorder'? Not really. What about modern day Japanese? Many are superstitious, yet not really religious (not necessarily Buddhist and/or Shinto). I wouldn't say they are 'Atheist' in the way I am, as they still have beliefs in ghosts and luck.

It's an interesting proposition regarding the classification of 'mental disorder'. I wonder if I could make a case for disability payment? :D

Equality, in the modern sense, is really a product of Marxism. Progressives of the last century were staunch eugenicists for the most part (as I understand, perhaps my reading of history is incorrect).

I wonder if "Socialism" is the norm, and Anarcho-Capitalism / Individualism is also a 'mental disorder'? Maybe that's stretching the term a bit too much?

Highly unlikely, at least in my experience :)

I think genetic atheism would be somewhat akin to having a genetic predilection towards depression. In the right environment, and given the right trigger, it manifests.

Uncle John's Band,

In your original post @18 you state:
"Makes you realize how folk wisdom is distorting. Don't judge a book by it's cover; but what does the relationship between independent artistic creations have to do with judging a person? A lot of this crap is baked in to the culture at a deep level."

If in fact you are correct and the commonly used phrase; don't judge a book by its cover; is somehow having a negative effect on the society in which it's used and it's citizens, I, as someone who has used and received such folk wisdom, would like to know where the error lies. I suggest we use the Socratic Method and see what is at the heart of this Idiom. In order to discover the meaning of it's common usage, as that seems to be in dispute, I suggest we start with the very words themselves. Does that seems reasonable?

Blogger cmbaileytstc April 17, 2018 6:06 AM

My guess about what Leftists actually think about race, equality, and evolution is along the lines of “The African will someday behave not like animals given enough education, gibs, and unconditional acceptance”.
Which is utterly unconvincing, because it is asking me and mine to bear very real risks and costs in exchange for nothing.

Dutton acknowledges in his book the studies referenced deal with human perception — whether we react differently because of what we see, even if that perception is inaccurate. And he also notes the relationships for example between facial shapes and criminal behavior are probabilities, not certainties. So Dutton took into account such limitations while cautioning that correlation does not equal correlation. In order words, there is a subjectivity of evaluating a physionomic style.

So while on the surface that it is true that we can judge people by what they look like, how accurate are those judgements, and the manner by which we came up with those judgements, remains decidedly up for debate. Thus, one must be wary of “hard science” based on hereditarian hypotheses that are conjectures about traits which have multiple causes.
