The literal bankruptcy of Never Trump

Mytheos Holt performs a post-mortem on the quixotic Evan McMullin campaign:
For the forces that backed him, McMullin was not the first, the second, or even the third choice for his appointed task—namely, to prevent Donald Trump from winning the presidency in the name of donor-driven True Conservatism™. Rather, the forces that supported McMullin leaped from one anti-Trump hero to another, starting with the plaintive-sloganed Jeb!, continuing with the vapid dreamboat Marco Rubio, and finally ending up desperately lining up behind Ted Cruz because at least he went on their cruises.

What separates McMullin’s backers from other Jeb!, Rubio, or Cruz supporters, however, was their total unwillingness to accept that sometimes a primary just wouldn’t go their way. In many cases, this was because they belonged to a class of people for whom losing wasn’t supposed to happen because of who they were. This was particularly true of Bill Kristol, arguably the man who built what little meager infrastructure there was for McMullin, hoping to put up someone, anyone, who would stop the GOP from rejecting its self-appointed neoconservative establishment rulers, and their domesticated coterie of social conservatives, who, goshdarnit, were just too Christian and principled to limit immigration, or to attack the interests of major metropolitan donor industries.

And so it was that people who had never had to fight to win a primary decided they were going to try and fight back against someone whose only experience was winning a primary he was never supposed to win by sheer force of will. First, they did it by attempting to force a brokered convention, which presumably would have produced someone like Marco Rubio or Paul Ryan as the nominee. All they accomplished was screaming helplessly from the floor of the RNC like a certain highly distressed member of the #Resistance.

Not to be deterred, they then decided to follow in the august footsteps of George Wallace and John Anderson, and run a third party protest candidate to ensure that no True Conservative™ would have to sully his or herself with a vote for Donald Trump. And for a while, their push looked like it might be something to worry about. Names like Mitt Romney, Ben Sasse, or even future Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis were bandied about with excitement. That is, until Romney, Sasse, and Mattis got wind of it and quickly made it plain that on no account were they involved in this, and would you please stop calling, Bill Kristol?!

But even after this, McMullin still wasn’t the first choice. That honor went to the august National Review columnist David French, who entertained the idea for just long enough to get a segment on Fox News complaining about how rude Trump supporters were. Then he promptly fled.

Only then, and finally, after casting about in the “darkness” of the dawning Age of Trump, the disappointed neoconservative Captain Ahabs realized they had to run someone if they wanted to look serious. Enter Evan McMullin, former House Republican Conference Chief Policy Director, former CIA agent, former investment banker, and man with nothing better to do because he was possibly the only unmarried Mormon over the age of 19 in Washington. And so, NeverTrump looked at McMullin, squinted, thought he looked enough like David French, and said: “OK, fine, you’ll do.”

Of course, quite rapidly it became clear that the chances of McMullin actually becoming president were someplace between zero and hahahahahahahaha . . . wait, what? But becoming president was no longer the point. It was all about sinking Trump, to prove to those awful populists who had dared to think for themselves, and not the way Bill Kristol and Bill Kristol’s donors wanted them to think, that they were servants, and could never live in the Big House as equals.

And so, a simple strategy for denying Trump the presidency was devised: McMullin would try to carve away enough of his voters in states with high Mormon populations so that even if Trump won a couple of swing states, the losses among Mormons would cancel out Trump’s victory. Whether McMullin won those states, or Clinton won them, was beside the point—which was, and only ever was, to hurt Trump. And, for a few moments, the strategy looked like it might work in Utah, right up until the Mormons thought it through, realized how much trouble they’d gone through making themselves part of the Republican coalition in the first place, and decided they’d rather not self-excommunicate for the sake of panicked Beltway grifters. Ultimately, McMullin came in third in Utah, behind even Hillary Clinton.
As has so often been the case, the light of the God-Emperor has revealed the true character of many a cuck and an America Secondist. I find myself wondering if McMullin even has the self-awareness to be ashamed of how he permitted himself to be used by Bill Kristol to screw over so many sanctimonious conservatives.

Then I recall who those sanctimonious conservatives were and how obnoxious they are, and I remember that I don't care.

I noted Larry Corriea praised Trump unconditionally after the Korea meeting and admitted he was wrong and that he did not foresee it working out like it did.

That is the difference between a rational man and the insanity of nevertrump.

The whole McMuffin saga demonstrated that the neocons had no interest in cleaning things up. It gave definitive proof that they were part of the swamp.

Not that we did not know that already, but lots of folks really thought that if a candidate had an (R) by his or her name, then they were good to go.

It has been fun watching Kristol cry like a little girl for the past 18 months, though.

Hopes rose on Tuesday among a caravan of migrants who traveled from Central America to seek asylum in the United States after U.S. border authorities allowed the first small group of women and children entry from Mexico overnight.

Yeah, both he and Sarah Hoyt kind of freaked out over TGE, but they were able to self-correct, because their rice bowl isn't getting broken. The neverTrumpers are neverTrumpers because Trump is, I won't say causing, but is enabling a political realignment. It should have happened a long time ago, but the establishment of both parties, the deep state, and large corporations conspired to prevent it. The status quo was profitable for them, and they controlled access to power and information, so it wasn't even difficult. Then the terrain shifted and suddenly their control started to slip. The smart people realize that things aren't going to go back to the way they were. NeverTrumpers think that Trump is an aberration and once he is gone things will revert to what they consider "normal."

Blogger tz May 01, 2018 11:33 AM

With McMullin and Kristoll, it was fully consensual.

But the whole thing about "Trump is a corrupt businessman that declared bankruptcy a tiny fraction of the time" and such is now shown to be rank hypocrisy where McMullin isn't filing the FEC forms (he needs to be fined or better yet, jailed), and not paying his debts. Yet he was the righteous acceptable principled white knight.

The deep state is trying to handle Trump like they did Reagan. Minimize his accomplishments, ridicule him and his followers, and reverse anything he does manage to accomplish. But, Reagan was actually a pretty standard politician. Two time governor of California. Had traveled around the country for years giving speeches. Had in-depth knowledge of both domestic and international issues. Trump is a philandering billionaire/reality TV show celebrity who won the presidency on his first run for office. The very fact that Trump could be elected shows who much the situation has changed since Reagan. People want jobs and they want the border controlled. Outside of places like Berkeley, San Francisco, and other liberal enclaves, any politician who runs on those issues is going to win. That's why they were running on those issues for the last 20 or 30 years. They just weren't doing what they promised they would do. But now that is becoming untenable.

They think that the majority are going to see that and have sympathy for the illegal aliens. Sympathy is a lot easier to generate when the sympathizer has a job and isn't worrying about losing it because of his wages being undercut. Right now a lot of people in the US have as less sympathy for those "immigrants" than a coal miner union member in the 20s and 30s had for scabs.

I participated in the Michigan recount. McMullein was not on the ballot there but he received enough write-in votes to finish ahead of one of the six people who were on the ballot. Of course, University of Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh also received a lot of write-in votes. If Hillary had won all votes that went to McMullin and Harbaugh, she still would have lost the state.

Never been so embarrassed to be a Mormon as every time I hear McMuffin's name. The idea that Mormons will vote for a Mormon, no matter his policies, goals, intentions, intelligence, etc...well, I'm grateful it's not true enough for McMuffin to have thrown Utah (or Idaho or Arizona) to Crooked Hillary, but the fact that it's enough of a thing to have been worth attempting in the first place makes me ashamed.

It approaches "blacks will vote for blacks, no matter what" territory.

Blogger Anchorman May 01, 2018 2:15 PM

@4. I think there's a distinction between an illegal immigrant trying to jump the fence and people seeking asylum. Now, to us, it's a distinction without a difference. However, they're processed differently. Asylum seekers aren't automatically turned away at the border.

A lot is being made about Kanye's tweets. His actual standing aside, "conservatives" have chattered for years about blacks being "on the plantation" when it comes to slavish voting patterns.

The 2016 election saw a similar defection from the GOP plantation and the GOPe acted exactly like the DEMe are acting. The evangelicals were supposed to line up and only vote for mainline GOP candidates and never vote for Trump. Yet, they did.

The GOPe lost their shit and many went NEVERTRUMP. Few recovered.

How many see their reaction to evangelicals voting for Trump and bucking party-acceptable voting/thinking as similar to DEMe reacting to the possibility of the black vote being up for grabs?
