Did you think he didn't mean it?

Because Matteo Salvini most certainly meant what he said.
A ship carrying some 630 migrants rescued while trying to cross the Mediterranean is stranded at sea after being turned away by both Italy and Malta. The Aquarius, which has more than 120 children and seven pregnant women onboard, saved hundreds from drowning in international waters on Saturday, but neither Rome nor Valetta has so far allowed it to dock.

The two nations are currently locked in a standoff, with Italy's new interior minister Matteo Salvini threatening to bar all rescue ships from docking in the country's ports unless Malta takes on the Aquarius.

Salvini reportedly sent a letter to the Maltese authorities saying he would 'be forced to close Italy's ports' if the 629 migrants saved by the French charity SOS Mediterranee weren't allowed to land at Malta's capital Valletta. Mr Salvini, the leader of the right-wing anti-migrant League party, later tweeted: 'Starting today, Italy, too, begins to say NO to the trafficking of human beings, NO to the business of clandestine immigration'.
It would have sent a more effective message if the Italians had sunk both the original ship and the rescue boat in order to make it perfectly clear that no amount of sob stories and manufactured bathos was going to have any effect on their anti-invasion policy whatsoever, but turning away the charity vessel is significant improvement on past practices.

And why doesn't the French vessel operated by the French charity simply make port in France? I understand there is a perfectly good Mediterranean port at Marseilles.

If using Limpet mines is good enough for an annoying, but comparatively harmless Greenpeace vessel, it's more than appropriate for ships actively engaging in a ferry operation for invaders.

Rescue, sink, deport.

And by deport I mean leave them closer to whatever random African beach they have the most chances of enduring hardship.

This is the most humane I would be willing to go.

As per the NGOs just seize their assets and ships and dismantle.

We are indeed living in tumultuous times.
Never, in a million years, would I, practically almost a barbarian of TL 4 when it comes to even remotely caring about modern politics, have thought I could ever be inspired to almost hope there is such a thing as an almost honest Italian politician.
I think I would have assumed an alien invasion by zeta reticulans as far more likely.

I pray Salvini really is what he has seemed to be for several years now and that he only gains in power and strength.

Send the Africans back to Africa, but murder the NGOs that deal in trafficking.

That is very true. But, it is also true that the damn boat could head towards Africa. I understand they have ports over there also. Plus, the people are all African to boot.

Blogger TheMaleRei June 11, 2018 6:23 AM

I'm sure the crews of the rescue ships would be happy to take the rescued into their homes and pay for them out of pocket, and be legally responsible for them so as to not burden the rest of society.

Would not that be compassionate of them?

And if they don't want to do that, then why not return them to the coast of Africa from whence they came? It is surely cruel to keep someone out of their accepted homeland.....

So many people in this world are utterly insane.

Blogger Jamie-R June 11, 2018 6:28 AM

The plan is unraveling. It was always going to be harder to get Europe to accept the game considering strong ethnic identities, but its politicians are more corrupt. That's starting to end. In America, they thought they had the demographic canvas to paint, but everyone's a potential politician there so corruption cannot be limited in a land where everyone gets a chance. Sink the ships, and then sink more if need be.

This is the way to stop the invasion.

And, by the way, make them actually respect you. They won't otherwise.

I profess no special ability in this area. But do this: do an Internet search on Justin Trudeau and look at him in other situations. Now that we suspect, it is kind of obvious that he uses falsie eyebrows. I can overlook a politician using makeup and all that, but this is downright over the top weird.

As for the Italians, it is about time the Europeans got there head out of there s$$. Apparently they are at the tipping point when it comes to accepting migrants. If it were up to me I would take them in and deport them to Germany. But then in a general sort of way I am a supporter of Germany and see them as in need of a little tough love.

I'd like to see the Italian navy involved. Some ideas;
1. A blockade.
2. Italian ships patrolling the sea to intercept the migrant ships, and send the passengers back.

If the EU or some organization don't like it, well, Italy has the 6th ranked military in the world, according to a military analysis website I linked to not too long ago.

I suppose trolling the Maltese (who have only 400,000 people on their tiny islands) is one way to courteously get the point across.

Very simple solution. Reintroduce the tradition that once you save someone, you are responsible for them. Dumping them off on someone else is not allowed.

The Aquarius, which has more than 120 children and seven pregnant women onboard, saved hundreds from drowning in international waters on Saturday

Note that the (neo)"conservative" Daily Mail aggressively promotes the standard narrative -- that these "charitable" NGOs are "rescuing" these people from drowning; rather than the reality -- that they are coordinating their transport to Europe with smugglers in Libya. Though they seem to have settled on "migrants" as the standard term now. Don't see "refugees" used much anymore.

Contrast with. Salvini's rhetoric:

Starting today, Italy, too, begins to say NO to the trafficking of human beings NO to the business of clandestine immigration

Which explicitly challenges this narrative, clearly casting the NGOs as the bad guys. Setting his own frame. Solid.

Sinking the boats would be effective from the standpoint of external incentives/ deterrence, but potential a PR disaster internally without media backing. Israel can massacre hundreds of civilians trying to cross their borders, and do so with impunity, because the legacy media backs them in doing so. Italy? Not so much.

If they can send a few boats back, it accomplishes almost the same thing in terms of incentives.

As a matter of fact, if the people behind the invasion were really hardcore, you know what they would do? Pull an SS Patria:

https://infogalactic.com/info/Patria_disaster

And blame it on some (real or imagined) "Far Right White Supreemist" organization. It would work, too. One more reason to keep these ships out of Italian ports entirely.

Blogger Noah B The Savage Gardener June 11, 2018 11:15 AM

Italy should charge Soros with human smuggling. I'm thinking Trump would happily extradite him.

Would you need to?  Just rig up a jet-ski with radio controls and a whole bunch of gunpowder.  Put the gunpowder in a 100-lb propane cylinder running under the surface if you want to be sophisticated.

You'd need HE if you were trying to cut large holes with small amounts of shaped charges.  If all you're trying to do is break the hull with an underwater gas bubble, gunpowder may be less efficient but it'll get the job done.  The advantage is you can make gunpowder from materials that nobody watches very closely.

The point is to use whatever works.  It might not even take a full sinking to stop the NGO traffickers.
