Mondiale Day 4

What a bicycle shot that was by the Serbian player! Pity the goalie was right there to stop it. Interesting attack-oriented formation by Serbia, it seems to be working well against Costa Rica.

UPDATE: Massive upset of defending champions Germany by Mexico, 1-0. Mexico deserved it too; the German defense was shockingly bad and totally unable to deal with the Mexican counterattacks.

UPDATE: Great result for the Swiss, taking a point off the Brazilians. They have no scoring up front and Shaqiri is barely a net positive despite his skill due to his refusal to pass on the break, but they're rock-solid on defense and hard to beat.

What a great direct kick goal! Serbia hopefully will win. Is it just me or is Costa Rica playing a little cheap? 2 yellow cards and an awful lot of grabbing and pushing going on.

I hope Germany slaps down Mexico hard. I'm so tired of the cut shots to Mexico fans before commercials.

Strength/power vs speed/finesse.

What is more likely: the first can adopt the second. Or vice versa?

I think the former.

Germany x Mexico very good game sofar. Neuer is still the best goalkeeper in the world, by far.

oops

I think Philipp Lahm is being sorely missed by Germany.

The Mexican counterattack is vicious. If they could pass more efficiently on the break, they'd have scored 2 or 3 more.

USA beats Scotland, 30-29! Ah, yes, wrong sport, but what a match.

Blogger Lazarus June 17, 2018 12:52 PM

If Germany can't handle the Mexican counter, what will happen if they have to go against Brazil?

Blogger Desillusionerad June 17, 2018 12:53 PM

yeah The Ger_mex game was strangely disappointing, Ger wasn't playing - not badly, but not as good as i expected, and Mexico really needs to work on their counters, they should have scored one or two more goals there.

I am longing for Brazil x Germany.

The Mexicans wanted this more and it showed. They had months to prepare for this match that they knew they needed to win in order to have the opportunity to avoid Brazil in the second round. Now let's see if they can follow through in their remaining group matches.

There won't be any miracles for Costa Rica this time around. Considering they have to play Brazil next and then Switzerland, they needed to beat Serbia today for a realistic shot at the second round.

@10, if Mexico win its group and Germany finish second, you'll get your wish in the second round.

Blogger Sim1776 June 17, 2018 3:25 PM

@RA

Mexico definitely wanted the win more. The Germans looked out of sync and seemed to squander the set piece opportunities.

Brazil still seems to have the edge on the Swiss but things are now interesting. It would be interesting to have two powerhouses lose today.

How naive. I thought VAR (video assistant referee) would avoid crass mistakes of referees.

Blogger Eduardo June 17, 2018 5:23 PM

Well that was... interesting.

Brazil was pretty good until they scored a goal... yup! The team thinks that all games are Golden Goal games I think XD. Swiss was, average, nothing special, they can play ONLY IF the other team doesn't pressure. The Swiss's were too far apart from each other, and playing against a team with vastly superior players they were under lockdown. Of course until Brazil decided that doing "Gol Número Dois" was too hard, then Switzerland could play and tie the game.

Germany is getting set for 2022 so they were pretty weak, and Serbia seem very run of the mill Slav team, not bad but nothing special. Mexico has a pretty good attack, meaning that Mexico will be a bother this Cup, if they fix their Swiss Cheese defense... no seriously, Mexico only defends when the ball is at the Penalty area XD.

Costa Rica was ooo-kay. I mean the team was average as well. They play with Heart but no finesse of any sorts.

The German defense might have been shockingly bad, but their dithering on attack was like old age pensioner's football.

It's a problem if successful coaches, they get afraid to change the team (it's always the same: "why change a winning team?" ... well, because time gets us all, that's why) and so they persist with old and slow players, and old and slow tactics, until they lose so badly they lose their job.

The German attack looked a lot better when the young subs came on, but they didn't sub the right (or maybe not enough) players; the front line couldn't take a shot and the middle couldn't make a fast break.

Meh.

The purpose of VAR is to supply plausible deniability for managing game results.

Brazil was one reflexive Swiss shin deflection away from a goal in the final minutes.
