The ostrich strategy

I don't think simply putting your hands over your ears and refusing to listen to your customers, users, and players is an effective customer service strategy. Or marketing strategy, for that matter.
The folks who are running the Battlefield V subreddit are done listening to your complaints about historical accuracy. This week, a new rule was put in place by the group running it where the discussions about the game not being accurate to what happened in World War II are over. Originally, the post said “No more bitching about historical accuracy, it’s a game, not a history book. Violations will have consequences.” But that text was then edited to a somewhat friendlier version below.

Edit: we get that y’all have valid criticism about battlefield V and the customisation options within the game. Sadly, this subreddit has proven to be unable to have a civil discussion about these things without devolving into name calling and slapfights. …

Reddit admins have confirmed brigading and the modteams of the subs in question are fully cooperating to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Hate us all you want but we’re done with this bullshit.
Of course, you know that Dice, EA, and the subredditors will proceed to claim that no one has any problem with their idiotic SJW historical revisionism because they haven't seen or heard any complaints about it.

They may be done with this bullshit, but I'm done with Battlefield. And I'm very far from the only high-level player to turn my back on the game.

The, "It's just a game" excuse, really falls flat when it comes to War games, since historical accuracy allows for greater player immersion.

Blogger Leatherwing June 17, 2018 8:00 AM

My group if gamers were just looking for a new game, but this crap made Battlefield a hard pass. That was a loss of at least 8 copies. They probably don't care, but it also trickles over to their other titles.

Blogger James Dixon June 17, 2018 8:18 AM

So what is the point of making a WWII battle game if it's not going to be historically accurate? Why not just make another game?

Rhetorical question, of course. I know the answer. They want to steal the prestige of the Battlefield name while subverting to their own purposes.

Their attempts to control history will fail, because once you see the scheming conscience behind the attempts, you begin to see the behaviours & attitudes that lead to it, then it's just a matter of putting 2 & 2 together about what you know from the past & how that impacted going by what you know about them in today's world.

They are soulless abominations. And, of course, they don't even play the games they tout and encourage.

If you do an internet search for Scientist Man Analyzes Ghostbusters, you will find a video where they run through the propaganda used to try to hype a movie that isn't much good, the latest remake of the original Ghostbusters move.

Even if you don't give a rip about the movie, it puts on display the propaganda methods used to push a narrative. Remarkable stuff when you consider how through it is even as it does not appear organized, and how much effort they put into it when the major cause does not rise above trying to keep a not much good movie in play. Apparently pushing the minor cause, their social agenda, gives it the little extra to make it worth doing for them.

In the whole thing the only person who seems uncomfortable pushing the BS is Bill Murray, to his credit. Otherwise what a bunch of a**holes these people are.

Good. Let them double down as hard as possible. It'll only decrease the number of potential customers, and I say it couldn't happen to a nicer company.

The E3 this year was filled to the brim with this kind of virtue-signaling, SJW pandering. Hell, Ubisoft's entire press conference basically had "We swear to god we are not misogynists, we respect women very much, we believe they can do everything a man can!" written all over it.

In a way I am glad that they are this open about it; makes it much easier for me to know who I shouldn't give my money to.

And to the people who will complain about this but still buy the game? You get the industry you deserve.

P.S. if this comment appeared two times I apologize, there was error with the browser.

The really disturbing thing is how insanely long the anti-GG list is on this Steam community thread. I'd say the antis are twice as many as the pro and neutral sides combined.

Battlefield hit detection was always garbage anyway.

Blogger Cataline Sergius June 17, 2018 10:02 AM

Let's view this in context.

A game like Wolfenstein is just a game. Historical accuracy was never welcome to that party. It was never remotely meant to be taken seriously. There could be a few elements like flying wings or the Landkruiser or even the Thule necromancers are perfectly acceptable.

I'll even accept women in combat if they are dressed appropriately.

Because it's MEANT to be fantasy.

Rewritting the World of Battlefield to be more inclusive is naked historical Lysenkoism.

It's the deliberate revision of facts to support the SJW narrative of Inclusion and Intersectionality or whatever made up bullshit word they are using this week.

You may as well have Captain America turning the tide at Kasserine Pass.

Potential Upside... Vox do you remember that WWII game you wanted to make? There may be an opening in the market coming up.

Putting a black man on the cover of a game about World War I was my 'nope' point, personally. What percentage of the people who died in that conflict were black? These are the same people who know full well the rhetorical power of images, and indeed spend much of their time talking about just that, but when you confront them on their own use of imagery they will pretend to be completely innocent of using rhetoric. TL;DR they always lie and project.

In the last years developers have opened the gates to their tools. If you're someone who just wants to learn most professional tools are available for free from game engines like Unreal and Unity, to software used in big budged Marvel movies like Houdini.

If you want to actually create a product they will charge a fee which is proportional to how large your studio is but nonetheless the prices are very affordable. For example the highest price Unity has listed is 1500$ per year.

Neill Blomkamp (creator of District 9) has his own independent studio, Oats Studio, which uses a lot of these free tools available to anyone and also gives away the assets they created for free on Steam.

Point I'm trying to make is it's never been cheaper and easier to create and distribute videogames and movies, or anything for that matter.

The gates are wide open.

Blogger Cubby8126 June 17, 2018 11:29 AM

Honestly historical accuracy is < overall gameplay experience and fun, but if the devs at ea and dice refuse to so much as listen to criticisms on historical accuracy then yhere is absolutely no gaurantee that they will listen to any criticisms in the future on the game. In facr there is more of a gaurantee that they will shrug away complaints from yhe community and impliment whatever the f the sjws want instead

Yes, if you scale your ambitions to the amount of talent you can pull together. There are great tools available for free to learn with, but the tools won't do the hard work for you, and the expectations for production values these days are pretty high. Hitting them takes time and skills that are expensive on the open market. Good programmers and 3D artists aren't cheap (cheap one are cheap though, and still overpriced).

Because they aren't the people who started it. They're the people who have been (foolishly) left in charge of somebody else's baby. And they are determined to either detach a leg and graft on 3 arms... or kill it. They really don't care which, just as long as the baby isn't allowed to grow as nature would intend.

Yep. We see this happening in the gaming industry. More and more indie titles are coming out and more and more talent is migrating from Triple A studios to small indie developers. The work is indeed difficult and time consuming so sacrifices have to be made. However the consumer has different expectations from an indie title compared to a Triple A title.

The big gaming companies sort of shot themselves in the leg with the pricing and quality of content. Considering the man-hours it takes to make a quality game and the 60$ fixed price for a Triple A title, the games are actually incredibly underpriced. This is why DLC's exist. They release a polished unfinished product in order to get the funding needed to finish the actual game.

Nintendo figured a way out of this. They basically make games for the previous generation of consoles. They stay afloat by taking a step back. If Naughty Dog releases a game that's not the most realistic thing ever then nobody will buy it, but nobody cares when Nintendo releases a game that looks crappier than your average indie title.

Add to this them alienating their core audience with SJW crap and it's not unlikely we'll see a great bust in the gaming industry. I think they see it coming too because for years they've been pushing at E3 "connectivity" bullshit software that nobody asked for. Valve were way ahead o the curve and stopped making games to focus on Steam and now everybody is trying to get in on their action 10 years too late.

But to take the conversation back to realistic war simulators check out Project Reality. It's a Battlefield 2 mod aimed at making the gameplay as real as possible. Where there's a will there's a way.

Blogger Snidely Whiplash June 17, 2018 2:30 PM

Nintendo makes their money by marketing to people who aren't gamers. The expectations of their market are completely different.

Blogger S1AL June 17, 2018 3:34 PM

Indies and big studios face two different fundamental problems. For indies, it's the sheer volume of competition and how hard it is to get noticed. (all those tools that make it easier for you to put out a game also make it easier for a few thousand of your closes competitors.) Cost of acquisition in the mobile space is ridiculous. For indies that make Alt-Right compatible games, getting noticed might be easier if we support them as Vox does so often. Curated content is going to matter, I think, so taking back the press (whatever that becomes in the future) matters.

Big studios are getting too finance-heavy. I know of a title that was recently cancelled after about $100M went into it, and that was from a second-tier company. The sheer volume of cash needed to keep a major studio going kinda forces studios into the Corporate mess, which weakens their immune systems when the SJW infections come calling.

If you're looking at an old commercial engine, the open source ones are probably just as good. Simply search for open source game engines. But I believe both the Unreal and Unity game engines have reasonable terms.

If you want multi-player, Squad is the spiritual successor of Project Reality.

Insurgency and ARMA III are two other realistic shooters. PUBG uses the ARMA engine as well.

For WW2, there's Red Orchestra 2 and Day of Infamy.

Escape from Tarkov looks amazing but it's still in closed beta.

All of the above are developed by indie studios too. ARMA is Czech and Tarkov is Russian.

And of course, there's always Counter Strike: GO.

Actually, why not do the reverse of the SJW-comicbook environment? Send in letters of support, request/demand more of this crap. Then the SJWs inside the company will have 'evidence' that there's demand, so they'll double down on the double down and make more... all for a customer that doesn't exist. It costs you, what, five minutes and maybe a stamp if you use regular mail... and it'll cost them tons pushing out more crap nobody will buy.

They've already shown that they'll ignore reasonable complaints, so let's encourage them down their chosen path... It's like a boycot, but more vicious.
