World Cup: Round of 16

France vs Argentina is approaching the half. Ugly, stupid late challenge and an obvious penalty vs a beautiful, flawless shot from well outside the box. 1-1 and it could easily go either way.

UPDATE: France won a very entertaining game 4-3. Next up is Portugal-Uruguay, and it's hard to imagine Uruguay stopping Cristiano Ronaldo and his 10 merry men.

France should probably have had 3 goals in the half, and leaves di maria completely uncovered in the middle of the field for the tying goal...Argentina should have momentum after that....

Was Maradona spazzing out and flipping off the French supporters after Argentina equalized?

Blogger nswhorse June 30, 2018 11:06 AM

Are there any French players in the French team?

Blogger Raggededge June 30, 2018 11:09 AM

Are the substitutes allowed to run onto the field like that?

Blogger The Deplorable Podunk Ken Ramsey June 30, 2018 11:28 AM

Wow, Les Bleus! Running away with it.

Best match of the cup if you ask me, if Argentina's defense was a bit better they would have won

Blogger BR MK June 30, 2018 12:20 PM

Good match. French players were much faster than Argentine ones. They seem to be much older than the French.

It's over guys.4-3.Agüero's goal came too late.We lose against an African team.

Blogger Lazarus June 30, 2018 12:22 PM

Argentina officially the oldest squad in the tourney

Uruguay has outscored opposition 11-0 during the current shut-out streak. May see a penalty-kick decider.

Uruguay 1-0. In my opinion this was the most beautiful goal sofar.

VD, did you get into soccer (playing or watching) pre or post move to Italy? Was it football while you were in the USA and European football in Europe?

I've always been amazed at soccer's popularity because it seems like a sport that you get way more out of watching if you've played it but it also seems quite difficult to play at any reasonable level (although even the smallest of children can imitate it).

Blogger Ceerilan June 30, 2018 2:44 PM

How dare you, the existence of France is racist!

Half time and Uruguay is ahead. Can Portugal score against their strong defense?

Blogger MendoScot June 30, 2018 3:39 PM

Ah well, we're out. Still we, went down in style, unlike the Croatia game. Still, it shows what happens when you have a forward calling the defense.

2-1 Uruguay. Ronaldo and his men ain’t so merry anymore

A whole lotta bracket pools just went into the trash.

Uruguay is a fun team to watch and root for. Smallest country to ever win the cup by an order of magnitude. They are essentially a tiny European nation in South America. Never count them out to add a fifth star to the crest.

(As I happened to be in Las Vegas today, I went ahead and put $100 on them to win in regulation at +185. What a blast to watch that game in a crowded sportsbook.)

As of yesterday they were at around 25:1 to win the whole thing. Sure to drop now. But was that ever right? With 16 teams left, were they really that far below average? Worse odds than Mexico?

Blogger Cecil Henry June 30, 2018 7:56 PM

Uruguay is an interesting little European country in South America.

With just 3 million people, there really is 6 degrees of separation in that nation.

Such homogeneity is to be admired.

"it's hard to imagine Uruguay stopping Cristiano Ronaldo and his 10 merry men"

And yet they won! Bye bye Cristiano! :)
