Alt-Hero #2 in print!

Arkhaven is happy to announce that Alt-Hero #2: Rebel's Cell is now available in print at the Arkhaven Direct bookstore for $2.99. This is the limited-run gold logo edition.

We are also pleased to announce that the gold logo edition of Alt-Hero #1: Crackdown has sold out and is no longer available. However, if you are a gold logo edition owner who would like to pick up a regular logo edition, they are now available at Arkhaven Direct.

It is possible that Amazon still has a few gold logo editions in stock, but the print run for the first issue gold logos has been shut down with just over 2,400 copies printed and sold.

In other Alt-Hero news, MAGNATE has provided an update on DevGame regarding the current state of the RPG development and the results of its most recent playtest. And here's a random thought: how about an Alt-Hero replacement for the now-defunct City of Heroes? For reasons I can't share now, that's a LOT more potentially viable than you would probably imagine.

As a beta tester of Coh and long time player, that would be awesome.

The villain aspect of Coh would be very interesting to play out in Alt hero as well. .

Ordered a couple each AH #2 and CDA #1 along with Superluminary. Couldn't resist priority shipping for another $1.50 should see package in a few days.

Vox, can I clarify something. Do you mean that for the foreseeable future, no more copies of alt hero volume one will be printed? If so, I’ll buy a load from amazon.co.uk before they disappear.

Second, when will #2 be available at Amazon uk?

Thanks!

No. They are now being printed with the red-white-and-blue Arkhaven logo, rather than the limited-edition gold logo.

I'd guess 7-10 days before they are in stock in the UK. In three months, you'll be able to order from Arkhaven Direct in the UK and in Europe.

City of Heroes is a game that is remembered fondly by almost everyone who ever played it.

Longtime player of City of Heroes here. You just put a smile on my snarling face! YES, PLEASE.

Blogger Gareth July 24, 2018 10:08 AM

Thank you. Over the previous few weeks I just gave away and sold 13 gold copies without realising what I was doing! Doh. Still, excellent comic I am proud to support.

Email me any design docs or detailed strategy guides if you have them, please.

That makes you our first retailer. Congratulations! And thanks.

Something to carry on Richard Garriot's legacy? Will that mean the Supreme Dark Lord will be Vox's player avatar in-game? It was always a treat when Lord/General British would make rare appearances in-game.

Heh. I wouldn't be averse to another CoH, other superhero MMOs like DC Universe Online have kind of fallen short.

Blogger Dave W. July 24, 2018 10:20 AM

"City of Heroes is a game that is remembered fondly by almost everyone who ever played it."

Yes, this. One of the best MMOs I've ever played. One of the best chat systems and best communities, too.

Blogger ZaijiaN July 24, 2018 10:50 AM

I would love a CoH revival, and would contribute my free time to coding it up, too.

Make it F2P, and put in the EULA that all player creations must be available to be used by Alt-Hero comics!

Blogger Cluebat Vanexodar July 24, 2018 11:07 AM

Need to do this when I get home.

Blogger Doomfinger July 24, 2018 11:16 AM

Yeah I'd support a CoH type game.

Blogger Steven Johnson July 24, 2018 11:27 AM

Alt-City of Heroes?

I'm shoving money so hard at the screen the ink is rubbing off.

Blogger IrishFarmer July 24, 2018 11:29 AM

Damn i just ordered avalon 1 and quantum mortis 1 cuz i was impatient waiting for this print edition. I wanted to get them all at once but no biggy. Congrats on the releases, btw and while Im gonna leave reviews just want to say as someone who was skeptical of the non glossy prints Im extremely pleased with the quality of the art and stories too. Im excited to keep the collection going for my kids, when theyre old enough to read them.

Blogger maniacprovost July 24, 2018 11:29 AM

I tried City of Heroes, but I was never a big MMO player so I didn't stick with it. I think the problems with CoH were mainly execution. At least at the early game, it was very rudimentary looking. The fact that it was a city as opposed to a magic forest didn't seem to add anything to the game.

An aesthetic more like Shadowrun, GTA, or that parkour running game might be better. Use the elevations. Sneak through dark alleys. Have rush hour pedestrian traffic. Of course that's a AAA game right there.

Something like the new XCOM games would be great: Squad based tactical super team combat, with a strategic layer. It could almost be a reskin, but it would be better to incorporate the Alt Hero RPG system, have more characters/dialogue type missions as opposed to purely combat, and have a more persistent world structure compared to only doing random maps.

Blogger Anno Ruse July 24, 2018 11:52 AM

I don't know much about modern MMOs but I know WoW is ready for competition. The developers are so boneheaded they removed the "massively multiplayer" element of the game by grouping up players from different servers in each game zone, meaning you can't get to know people from your server and build a "local" community.

Blogger R Webfoot July 24, 2018 11:52 AM

I never tried CoH, but I heard it widely recommended - I would play City of Avalon. (I'm assuming that's what it would be..... think Chuck Dixon would like to help create story arcs and mission?)

Blogger Were-Puppy July 24, 2018 12:10 PM

*Cha-ching*

Just ordered Quantum Mortis 2, Avalon 1, and Alt*Hero 2 .

Blogger Vlad Z. July 24, 2018 12:38 PM

I got my printed copy of Alt-Hero #1 yesterday from Amazon and it was a gold logo version.

Nice story, love the artwork. Keep 'em coming!

Blogger Dave W. July 24, 2018 12:55 PM

There's been a couple of attempts at kickstarting a fan-made successor to CoH, notably City of Titans. I *ALMOST* contributed, but thankfully found out beforehand that the main developer was Nate Downes, the operator of lefty crank site Addicting Info. The guy lies daily on that site, I'll be damned if I'm giving him my money. It's been over 5 years since Titans was started, and no sign of any results. I'M SHOCKED, SHOCKED I TELL YOU.

I'd help code, too.

There's a reason Vox got the backing he did. He's got a history of delivering on his promises. Some others, not so much so.

2400 is a lot of comic books, isn't it?

How many regular and digital editions have you sold? If you don't mind my asking.

I cannot Code, but for the last ten years I have been making and selling Environment packs to Indie Developers. I specialize in "Hand Painted" Style, which goes well with comic book themes. I would love to contribute to a COH reboot as well... The "Indy Server" thing never really worked out.

Blogger Dire Badger July 24, 2018 3:01 PM

Remember the Jackass that was the lead developer on CoH? When asked what you'd have to do to make your own, he stated, "First you have to come up with about a Million dollars."

Honestly, a serious kickstart from a guy with a proven delivery history could probably get ten times that.

And to be fair, resource sites like Turbosquid and predesigned engines could probably decimate the sunk costs.

Blogger Dave W. July 24, 2018 3:16 PM

@28, was that Statesman or Positron?

Blogger Dire Badger July 24, 2018 3:24 PM

Statesman. The guy's name dropped out of my consciousness the moment the servers shut down.

Blogger Dave July 24, 2018 3:43 PM

2400 is a lot of comic books, isn't it?

That's AH#1 only, add in Quantum Mortis, Jeeves Ho, Rebel Dead, Chicago Typewriter and econComic probably 2-3x that total. AH #2 and CDA #1 gold logos will probably sell out even faster.

What's remarkable is probably most of the buyers of Alt Hero and Avalon are backers and are already entitled to the digital issues and print versions.

Blogger Dave W. July 24, 2018 4:04 PM

Heh, a lot of people were glad when Statesman left. He rubbed a lot of folks the wrong way.

Dave wrote:What's remarkable is probably most of the buyers of Alt Hero and Avalon are backers and are already entitled to the digital issues and print versions.

Indeed.

Backed all the paperbacks and would have gone for the hard covers as well if I could have spared the coin at the time.

Now I'm picking up multiples of ever single issue, both for my own collection and to give away, plus issues to compile a nice example collection for my guys to take to the comic shops when the time for that campaign comes.

Alt-Hero is the first money I've spent on comics in nearly 15 years.

For me, this has been the most enjoyment for the money, since I was a little shaver dropping lawn mowing coin for Punisher books.

I am legit excited at the prospect of a CoH: Arkhaven edition MMO. Will the Dark Lord make a cameo?

Blogger VD July 25, 2018 5:40 AM

Will the Dark Lord make a cameo?

But of course! He'll probably have a condo on Diamond Beach.

Blogger Dave July 25, 2018 8:53 AM

Gotta love Castalia-Arkhaven Direct Bookstore. Yesterday put in an order just after 7am EST, at 8pm they sent an email saying order had shipped. With priority shipping I should have it tomorrow.

Blogger GithYankee July 26, 2018 8:26 AM

Yeah, I bought some of the $3 ones and put them up in B&N. I don't know if they'll sell, believe it or not normies are essentially clueless about our doings, but it's awesome to see that Arkhaven on the shelf. It in no way looks out of place, just like another graphic novel.
My only problem is the Alt-Hero #1 I put out was a gold label, and now if I take it back it'll look like stealing. I'll have to buy it twice lol.
