Good news from Thailand

The story of the Thai soccer team trapped 800 meters underground is pretty incredible. Two of the boys are now out, so here's to hoping the rescuers are able to safely extricate the rest of the team.
First two members of Thai soccer team are OUT of the cave: Official reveals news after threat of rain forced divers to begin mission to rescue children and coach from flooded tunnels
  • The first two schoolboys were rescued safely after divers executed a carefully constructed rescue mission
  • The treacherous rescue operation to save 12 young Thai footballers from a flooded cave begun this morning
  • Eighteen divers have been sent in to complete the mission as officials said Sunday was 'D-Day' for rescue
  • The young footballers and their coach have been trapped in flooded caves in northern Thailand for 16 days
  • As soon as the boys exit the cave they will be airlifted by helicopter or driven by ambulance to local hospital
A Thai Navy SEAL has already died bringing in oxygen and other supplies. It's good to know his sacrifice wasn't in vain.

UPDATE: four of the boys are out now.

Amen.

Yeah a buddy dive with a potentially panicky non-diver, in a cave... sounds tough to pull off.

Exactly. Not sure if there are any women rescuing them. Perhaps women still need us for something after all.

May that Navy diver rest in peace.

From what I read he was a retired SEAL diver who volunteered.

Any doubt in anyone's mind if this story happened in the US and HRC was in the WH (god forbid) and was woke in the middle of the night, she would've said "what difference does it make, they're probably not gonna make it?" and then rolled over and went back to sleep after screaming at the staff not to wake her again.

Sounds harsh but I know it's not just me that sees her that way.

it would be one thing if it had been some rando tourists WHO DIDN'T KNOW THE WEATHER OF THE PREVAILING SEASON.

but why are native Thais caving in the middle of monsoon season? that's just not very bright.

A big BZ to the rescue teams.

They have 6 out now, and are working on the next batch, which should come in the next couple of hours, if there are no major issues.
The letters back and forth with their parents were touching. Also, the generosity of the parents to send letters to the coach that they didn't blame him were something you rarely see in our world.

I expect the coach will have some 'splainin' to do.

Those kids are lucky that they're athletes. They're better at taking on physical skills on average and at taking guidance from a coach or adult. I'm guessing most normal kids would freak out having to squeeze through those passages.

No, it's not. I wonder if the entrance of the cave slopes upward slightly or is flat, giving the impression that the cave doesn't flood.

Well they did what they did, that's all. At least it is not turning onto a complete calamity.

no, it's worse than that.

according to the article i read ( with all the caveats that implies ), the search teams knew where to look for these kids ( +2 miles of SUBMERGED TUNNELS back in the cave ) because the parents told them where the team went.

ie - the parents ALL KNEW, and gave permission to the coach to do it.

forget the coach, wtf were the parents thinking?

this is where you find out the the Chinks, Koreans and Japanese are the high IQ east Asian populations
...
and the others? not so much.

and i'm only provisionally excusing the hypothetical rando tourists. caving is a VERY dangerous hobby and people die / get trapped or injured on a semi regular basis.

ANYONE going very deep into a cave without thoroughly being aware of the weather for a good 100 miles around is ... really not very bright. and three miles into a cave system is REALLY deep.

"forget the coach, wtf were the parents thinking?"

Speaking of poor parental judgment, there was a story yesterday about youth groups being trapped in Haiti during gasoline riots. I can't fathom the mindset of a parent who thinks it's a good idea to let their 15 year old go down there.

If a child gets trapped in a Thai cave, it becomes an international news story because it's such a rarity. If they are killed, maimed, or tortured in Haiti it's just another day of vibrancy.

I’ve jumped with some of those navy seals. Good men all. Not anyone in that group I’d ever look down on. May the poor diver Rest In Peace.
