Round of 16, Day Two

I don't see the hosts surviving a vastly superior Spanish team, or even keeping it close. As for Croatia vs Denmark, both teams are tough and disciplined, but the Croats have more skill than the Danes.

UPDATE: Holy cow, Russia winning on penalties after holding Spain to 1-1 through extra time. I did NOT see that coming.

Poor Russians. They're not geared up for that level, it may get ugly.

Blogger pyrrhus July 01, 2018 10:40 AM

Fluke own goal off a Russian leg, 1-0 Spain, now a hand ball on spain...

1-1 after the hand ball...Weird game so far

Blogger pyrrhus July 01, 2018 10:43 AM

As the game against Morocco showed, this isn't one of your stronger Spanish teams...

Blogger Mandos July 01, 2018 10:54 AM

Yeah weird game. Thought the Spaniards would push their advantage but they end up the 1st half with 3 shots/2 on target. I was expecting Russia to press higher after the first one but turns out sticking to their defensive tactics to avoid taking a second one was the right choice.

Putin should show a documentary of the Spanish "Blue Division" fighting along side Nazi Germany when they invaded Russia in 1941. Nothing gets the Russians fired up like taking on an invader.

Russians playing for a penalty-kick decision. Just getting to overtime was a victory of sorts.

Announcers said Spain hit the 800 pass mark sometime just before the end of regular time.

Blogger nswhorse July 01, 2018 12:42 PM

Well I guess Spain won't be winning it...

Blogger Valiant July 01, 2018 12:43 PM

Great second block, with a kick.

Blogger Lazarus July 01, 2018 12:44 PM

Looks like it was a good strategy. The Russian coach is one cool character.

Gripping! Spain falls. Last night for background preparation for the match I watched the TV show, Extreme Soccer Russia, on the NatGeo channel. It was a surprisingly well-done and engaging show, featuring Russians in their various modes of soccer play from the frozen tundras to the foggy bogs and everything in between. There's lots of grit there, if you love the game you might find it interesting:

Congrats Team Russia!

That was a miracle save by the goalie. It was a great game.

Blogger Cluttermonkey July 01, 2018 12:53 PM

Last gasp of the 2008-2012 world beating team. Maybe they should have gone with all new and young players. Of the younger players, they should get rid of De Gea asap.

Blogger Cluttermonkey July 01, 2018 12:55 PM

But this was Akinfeev‘s game today and no one was going to take it from him.

Congratulations to Jack Posobiec for an amazing save to win the match.

Still not tired of winning.

I guess we can stop listening to Vox's World Cup predictions now :-)

Portugal and Spain both out.

Blogger Lamarck Leland July 01, 2018 1:51 PM

Vox, whatever you do, don't say Brazil will win!

A few years back there was some chatter about FIFA making sure the hosting nation's team went at least to the quarters. There is little doubt if FIFA being corrupt (WC in DUBAI?!! For CHRISTMAS!!????!), so that wouldn't surprise me.

You're kidding me Croatia! Penalty kick denied by the Danes. Should have been a red card for the Danes, too, but they got a yellow.

Blogger Desillusionerad July 01, 2018 4:46 PM

gods, the penalty shootout is so bad (or plausibly the goalies good).

Blogger Desillusionerad July 01, 2018 4:49 PM

The Dane got a yellow card because he was trying to play for the ball - You only get a Red card if you are Just disruptive.

The Den vs Cro match was one of the best goalkeeping displays you'll see there at the end. But it's one of those issues: the GK isn't also taking the kicks. Denmark made some bad shooting decisions, as well.

I disagree, by FIFA rule if you obstruct an obvious goal by holding a player, you are to be sent off. And that's exactly what happened.

But didn't matter anyway, Croatia wins in PKs.

Blogger VD July 01, 2018 5:19 PM

He didn't hold the player, he tripped him while going for the ball from behind. They had a relatively recent rule change; it used to be that any last man foul from behind was a red card.

Croatia deserved to win, but the Danes put up a respectable fight. Peter Schmeichel looks like he could still go out there and play!

Blogger Looking Glass July 01, 2018 5:24 PM

The Denmark defender almost got the ball from behind. Yellow card was the correct call, as it wasn't an obvious play to take down the attacker.

Hacked again!

Over time, goalies have devised penalty-kick strategies to maximize their chances.

It is now one of the most dramatic sequences in sports.

Someone has to win, and someone has to lose, and it is required to be done according to a calendrical schedule.

It is entertainment, not existential threat management

It may be so, but that is not what happened here.

Is it possible that the final could end up being France vs. Russia? Just the optics of that would be devastating.

Brazil stands with the God-Emperor (and with Jack Ward, I presume). Sending mexicans back home
