Why Infogalactic matters

Wikipedia, as you would expect, is whitewashing the Sarah Jeong page:
The BBC, which is generally considered a WP:RS around these parts, reports:

The New York Times has defended a new member of its editorial board who wrote racist tweets about white people.[1]
I fail to see why this would not be included in the article. Cheers to all, XavierItzm (talk) 22:50, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

*** @XavierItzm: I have changed your comment, since the BBC changed the article today. For anyone wondering, the BBC used to say "racist" but now says "inflammatory". You can see somewhere below where I criticize this decision by the BBC, but if they changed it, we have to respect that. wumbolo ^^^ 16:33, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
I've reverted this Orwellian change. Changing someone else's comment on a talk page is not acceptable.2600:1012:B147:F1EA:F559:8E27:8070:B4CB (talk) 09:32, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
I don't see anyone disagreeing that the tweets are in fact racist. At the very least, we could insert a sentence that says: "Sarah Jeong become the subject of widespread criticism in the media in early August 2018 when, upon her hiring by the New York Times Editorial Board, it was discovered that she had posted a series of racist Twitter messages disparaging white people." I don't think any of that is disputed in any way at this point.Ikjbagl (talk) 23:18, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Support inclusion of your sentence as proposed and using the BBC as source. Remember, the page has been locked up and a condition has been imposed that consensus on the sentence and source must be reached. XavierItzm (talk) 23:24, 2 August 2018 (UTC) Whereas I still think the above contribution would have been fine, its simple one-sentence statement of fact was never greenlighted by the powers that be and instead got derailed by suggestions of having an entire paragraph. So now I support an alternate proposal below. Cheers to all. XavierItzm (talk) 06:31, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
Just adding that my response here could be used to add two or three more sources to back up that the criticism was "widespread", with no fewer than 10 major news organizations reporting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Sarah_Jeong#I_think_that_the_controversy_of_Jeong's_Tweets_should_be_mentioned%2E Ikjbagl (talk) 23:32, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Agreed that additional sources could be added later. However, let's not muddy the waters and see if consensus can be reached. XavierItzm (talk) 00:38, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
Support sentence proposed Conveys what occurred concisely, with the article in the BBC I think its nigh impossible to describe the event as not noteworthy. SWL36 (talk) 00:27, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
Regarding noteworthiness, the story is now on the Front Page of BBC.com/news, archive link here https://web.archive.org/web/20180803003558/https://www.bbc.com/news Ikjbagl (talk) 00:37, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
Oppose per the above stated reasons for waiting to decide whether this should be included at all, and if yes per the sources, then how it should be characterized. We remain WP:NOTNEWS. We look at how a group of sources deal with a topic; decide if it merits inclusion in an encyclopedic account of, in this case, the subject's biography; then summarize the significant viewpoint or viewspoints. Reiterating the BBC's version is what news aggregation sites do. We're not that. Innisfree987 (talk) 01:40, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
I agree with the not news point about Wikipedia, but I disagree with your characterization. All of the reputable sources linked so far deal with the subject in the same way. This single news event is more notable by Wikipedia's own (secondary-source based) standards than the rest of this person's career. The other secondary source mentions of her up to this point have all been in blogs, University blogs or lesser known websites (though she was cited by Forbes), and she now has an article on every major news website related to this incident. She has also had a multitude more edits to her page in the past day than she has had in her career. Waiting to see if the event "becomes" notable makes less sense when the event is already more notable than the rest of her page so far constructed. Ikjbagl (talk) 01:55, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
Well, I sure would like to work on expanding the rest of it but unfortunately I'll have to do so by edit request for now! Meanwhile. The number of edits has no bearing, really. We don't make decisions based on popularity. Other points: the term "racist" is definitely not being used universally; ABC, WashPost, and USNews use the expression "derogatory". CNN calls "disparaging" and notes many people defending Jeong call them "satirical". Who knows where it will land when the dust settles--if anywhere worth noting. Beyond word choice, your note above saying I don't think any of that is disputed in any way at this point is just the issue: as WP:NOTNEWS, we're not aiming to post an update "at this point" (which would be appropriate, for a news site!), we're trying to decide if an event is rates a mention of an encyclopedic bio, which I don't think we can see on a subject like this after one day. I'm not saying this should definitely never be addressed; I'm only saying WP:CRYSTAL applies in understanding the significance of this, or not, in the bigger picture. Innisfree987 (talk) 02:33, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
Innisfree987 argues that "Reiterating the BBC's version is what news aggregation sites do," as if the BBC were unique in reporting these facts, as if the Beeb were somehow fringe, when in fact, up until yesterday, the BBC was considered a gold standard among WP:RS around the Wikipedia. Innisfree987 also implies that the BBC is somehow unique, when there are other WP:RSs saying the exact same thing.
Infogalactic gives you the power to decide upon the relevant facts for yourself: Sarah Jeong. It would be nice if conservatives would simply use Infogalactic instead of constantly whining about Wikipedia doing what Wikipedia always does.
Speaking of stealth-editing, Christina Hoff Sommers notes that there’s “No mention of Sarah Jeong’s demented tweets on her Wikipedia page. Why? A little group of activist editors won’t allow it. Amazing. See them in action here.”
Why? Because the 500+ Wikipedia Admins are all SJWs and they have no intention of allowing any information on Wikipedia that will damage anyone on the Left if they can help it. Speaking of Infogalactic, we're making some changes to the server that should increase performance considerably on certain tasks. So, if it feels faster to you, you're not imagining it.

Any recent word on Don't Panic Engine?

Blogger Resident Moron™ August 06, 2018 12:40 PM

My burn unit payment went out last week. I saw the email and smiled to myself.

It’s easily among the best money I’ve ever spent.

Everyone who reads here should check it out. I’d bet the proportion of you that could afford $5 a month is well into the 90s.

I may be a feckless annoying arse but I’m doing my bit to contribute and not being a bloody consumer.

Any recent word on Don't Panic Engine?

They're working on it. No ETA yet. This change was actually a major - REALLY FREAKING MAJOR - performance problem that was totally disguised until it manifested. We're not bothering to fix the MediaWiki aspects because we're totally focused on DONTPANIC now.

Blogger Durandel August 06, 2018 12:57 PM

Any chance some of the IG editors could tag her archived racist tweets for posterity? Need incriminating evidence for the future Inquisition.

Blogger Ledford Ledford August 06, 2018 1:01 PM

They are truly, truly, overplaying their hand. As I've noted before, all they had to do was run out the American clock. Why is it so necessary that Jeong's tweets not be racist? I ask this not as a complaint, but as a tactical question. Sacrificing her in order to mollify frightened whites makes so much sense.

All they have to do to win is keep the borders porous and keep the natives passive. The former can be done by the Chamber of Commerce, you don't need to "Abolish Ice." The latter is very easy, you just don't explicitly call for the cancellation of whites.

This how they won California. We're fortunate they can't learn from their victories.

Blogger Rhys August 06, 2018 1:09 PM

I've heard EVS and D&C describe Marvel, as run by the SJWs, as a "mean girls clique". That seems to be the modus operandi of the vast majority of moderating teams now as well.

Blogger Looking Glass August 06, 2018 1:09 PM

@3 VD

Np. DONTPANIC is a huge & critical undertaking, so it's going to take time. Was just curious if there was any news.

And MediaWiki is still a horrible abomination, may it burn with the Priests of Moloch in a massive pyre.

Blogger electricsheeple August 06, 2018 1:12 PM

Really pissed off that Infowars got shitcanned from youtube. Tell us its going to be ok, VD. Why is there not more outrage among the right wing politicians? Is this is an existential threat for our movement?

Thinking about my own question: I don't know why they react stupidly. I do know they should be encouraged to do so everywhere at all times.

This obsession over how other SJWs have spun the news is pretty funny given that all one has to do is go to Miss Jeong's Twitter feed. She is not hiding her racism, she did not go back and delete/clean-up. You can simply read it from the source, and there it is. Seething racism, also, sexism and ageism.

She even graphed it for you a few times, just in case you might miss it.

Jeong also shows up in the destruction VICE causes all over the globe. Plus, we get a nice dose of Korean on Chinese racism in the mix there. I still don't know how Jeong got anywhere in life. She's clearly a committed mid-wit, but somehow made Berkeley & Harvard. (Given the recently-ish found hatred of White Men, there's some pretty obvious options open here.) But even when talking about becoming a US Citizen in a Vox piece, her parents are barely mentioned. Her parents clearly have massive connections, and it's not just some random case of right-adjusted, brilliant child makes good in American.

https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/7/5/15905816/immigrant-trump-citizen-patriotism

This is a treasure of hilarious quotes.

"I'm a very privileged person. And I am, like, completely documented. Everything's in order, and I'm educated. I speak English. I don't have that much to be afraid of."

"Well, I mean, part of me — I think maybe something inside me wanted to become a lawyer because the thought of having sort of power over the system was appealing."

"I moved to Oregon in October, and I had just been through a big breakup, so I had been bouncing around addresses for a little bit" (This would be 2016.)

"And when you're sort of forced into that situation, I realized that I am so culturally American. I have built my entire life around an American identity — even though I spent my entire life feeling like I wasn't a real American."

"Even though I knew all those things, the travel ban really freaked me out, like, a lot. And so it was very strange to have that stuff going on parallel while I'm dealing with all of this bureaucracy." (Highly questionable emotional stability, but that's already been established.)

"Sometimes you get those flashes of paranoia. They shouldn't come to you. But when they’re talking about your life — and it is my life because sure, I could go live outside the country, but I would always feel like an expat, whether or not I had citizenship — you feel a little like you've been taken hostage." (She's a classic case of confused loyalty, non-racially native 2nd generation immigrant. No wonder she was a raving bigot when no one was looking.)

It's not going to be okay. Because they don't understand the cultural war and they have no stomach for fighting it. This is an existential threat for America. If you recall, I specifically warned Alex that this would be the next step.

This is why the Right is so easily defeated. It's all fine and dandy to insist on going it alone while it benefits you at the expense of building institutions, but the more successful you are, the more fragile you become.

Even though I am not into it beyond the anti-cabal stance of the whole QAnon thing it has exposed the "anonymous" hacking group as nothing more than Soros stooge agents. Maybe we need to expand "Don't talk to the Media" into as many languages as possible.

But, I'm happy they're keeping her. If she lasts about two more weeks, Trump is going to take the cudgel to the NYT that next time they act up. Trump reading her tweets in Missouri would be amazing.

Shouldn't we be cheering on the hiring of Sarah Jeong? In fact, the New York Times should give her double the salary they give any other editor. Not only that, but they should secretly encourage her to continue to make anti-white remarks and then criticize their critics for being racists, or not getting the joke, or whatever. Because what this will do, is it will diminish their readership causing them to lose money. Kind of like telling the enemy that using their foot is a great way of cleaning their guns and anyone who doesn't think so is an anti-gun nut.

Blogger Looking Glass August 06, 2018 2:06 PM

@23 Brian Dean

NYT should be encouraged to publish her on the front page every day. Never prevent your enemy from making clear strategic errors.

Blogger Random #57 August 06, 2018 2:13 PM

@14 VD:

It's not going to be okay. Because [right wing politicians] don't understand the cultural war and they have no stomach for fighting it. This is an existential threat for America. (Emphasis added.)

I have some faith that "samizdata" will continue to get the signal out. The problem is that this campaign against alternative outlets, which I'm assuming will intensify as we get closer to the 2018 election (it really needs to be complete before the Labor Day holiday ends, the traditional point when campaigning starts in earnest, but there's a good chance 2020 is the main target) will effectively end getting the signal out to normies until something prompts them to seek out samizdata. And for the moment Trump is unmuzzled, but he's got lots of fish to fry.

Some national level Republicans recognize the threat, but as VD says, "they have no stomach for fighting it". Most believe they're on the other side anyway, despite how they're getting shot, assaulted, their tires slashed, buildings vandalized, and verbally harassed in what should be "normal life", with the intensity ramping up. This has been going on at a greater intensity for their staff and supporters for months and even years, they don really give a damn about that at all. When the Left puts their staff in the hospital with life altering, possibly maiming injuries, and they do nothing, what do you expect at the high, less concrete levels of what's supposed to be "debate" in "civil" society?

See also how the guy who sincerely tried to assassinate Trump got one year in prison to be followed by deportation, and the guy who seriously injured Rand Paul got 30 days in jail. "Right wing politicians" are suffering from a serious failure of imagination in recognizing the threat, and courage to face it. We can expect no help from them on anything, besides the economy I suppose, unless their donor class decides to take a hit there to get rid of Trump.

Blogger Shimshon August 06, 2018 2:16 PM

I can't believe the RNC chose Charlotte for the 2020 convention. There is a large network of Communist agitators here left who arrived for the Jonathan Ferrell police shooting trial which ended in a hung jury before they could start a riot.

They were ready when Keith Lamont Scott was shot in an altercation with Charlotte Police and had people on the streets attacking property and civilians within hours.

I hope the hotel and restaurant crowd realize you can't make much money with thugs roaming the streets and you doors and windows smashed in.

Speaking of censoring media (e.g. like this topic regarding Wikipedia), did you know that in two Leftist bastions this weekend the Police deployed riot gear to suppress violent Leftist extremists? It is hard to find in US media, but in the UK both the Daily Mail and The Guardian covered it. Probably because Antifa was crying about how the cops were only busting them, and not the Proud Boys or Patriot Prayer groups. Of course the reason for the arrests is that it was Antifa doing all the violence. And in Berkeley apparently the cops are fed up so they posted the Antifa mugshots on social media within hours. See: Daily Mail and The Guardian.
