Better smile harder, ComicsGateNaziHaters

SyFyWire isn't quite sure what ComicsGate is, when it started, or why it started, but they know a) it is Very Bad, and b) Ethan van Sciver and Richard Meyer are ComicsGateNaziHater He-Men Women Harassers.
In the current climate of internet discourse, the latest story of online harassment is always just around the corner. That’s especially true in the comic book industry. If you’ve been following most comic creators during the end of August, then you’ve likely seen the latest developments in the ongoing saga of what's become known as “Comicsgate.”

Comicsgate, for those not in the know, is the name of a group of comics readers who believe their beloved medium has been corrupted by political correctness. It is their stated belief that Social Justice Warriors (SJWs, or people with vested interest in women, POC, and members of the LGBTQ community) have infiltrated the comics industry and are simultaneously profiting off of it and destroying it from the inside. In order to combat this invasion, they have taken to their keyboards to harass, dox, and threaten any creator they believe to be a part of the problem.

The actual timeline of Comicsgate — tracking down where and when it started, who exactly started it, and what the inciting incident may have been — is complicated, to say the least. It may have begun as many as three or four years ago, coinciding with the rise of its mutated brethren Gamergate and the Sad Puppy take over of the Hugos. It may instead have begun when Chelsea Cain completed her run on Marvel’s Mockingbird, or when Heather Antos, formerly an editor at Marvel, posted a photo of herself and other staffers enjoying an evening of milkshakes. We did our best to track the start of this so-called “movement” earlier this year, but wherever you believe it started, Comicsgate has now entered a new chapter. Much to the chagrin of those involved, many of their heroes are now denouncing them altogether.

In the final week of August, countless comics pros began posting a copied and pasted message to their social media accounts. The message was one of solidarity with marginalized creators who had been experiencing extended harassment, many for more than a year. The message read, “I believe comics are for everyone. There is no excuse for harassment. There is no place for homophobia, transphobia, racism or misogyny in comics criticism.”
Whatever. The Evil Legion of Evil is not ComicsGate, we're not on Twitter or Facebook, and all this back-and-forth online harassment is simply Not Our Problem. We have more important things to do. For one, publishing three of the top 50 bestselling superhero comics and graphic novels. That's not Kindle either, that's everything. It's fascinating to see that some of the print editions are actually outselling the Kindle editions on Amazon, particularly when we know how well they are doing on Arkhaven Direct.

For two, we're now entering the final stretch of the Alt-Hero: Q campaign. Trust the Plan. Join the Win. Get on Board. Crush the SJWs. If you're still on the fence about this one, today is the time to jump. There are just 17 hours left.

ComicsGate is making the same mistake as the Sad Puppies and trying to make nice with the SJWs who hate them. But cowering, cringing, and smiling hopefully in an attempt to convey your harmlessness is not going to stop an SJW media swarming any more than wagging its tail will permit a puppy to fend off an attack by a school of ravenous flying piranha.

UPDATE: A rare Brightstream addressing the closing hours of the campaign. Also, I'll be on with Alex Jones at 1 PM Central.

Look at us, we're the counterculture now.

The irony is just *kisses fingers*

Delicious doesn't even begin to describe it. Moderates, centirsts, whatever you want to call them, are THE WORST. Worse than losers.

Vox literally wrote the books on how to win, he is DEMONSTRATING it, and these clowns still can't understand the lay of the land. They deserve everything they're getting, and then some.

These are concepts so logical, so elementary, one really has to wonder about the intellectual capacity of those who fail to see. Although given the lack of testicular fortitude, perhaps the comprehension gap shouldn't be too surprising.

Blogger SAPPER September 26, 2018 9:52 AM

Vox Day is 100% correct. Playing nice with SJW's just means you will be caught unawares when they finally come for you.

Well, when they put it like that...

The movement will be a textbook example of exactly what not to do. They had a manual, pretended to praise the manual, and then ignored it.

A very pretty alternate cover by Alan Quah. It's for the collectors. If you just want to read it, stick with the omnibus.

Among print editions (paperback & hardcover) Alt★Hero #1 is sixteenth. As you say, this ranking is without the benefit of the sales figures from Arkhaven Direct and don't forget Infowars.

Alt★Hero #1's staying power is also very impressive. It's been in the top half of the rankings since what, the end of May?

Comicsgate is seems to be spearheaded by two particularly volatile individuals, Richard C. Meyer who uses the ironic handle Diversity & Comics, and Ethan Van Scriver, a comic book illustrator. Their basic mission statement was that female, POC and LGBT characters and creators were destroying the industry ... Comicsgate seems to be hiding behind freedom of speech, to deliver their message of essentially white supremacy masochism to the masses. We all know how well that worked out the last time an organization did that.

Blogger Difster September 26, 2018 10:25 AM

SciFyWire (as if this is a shock) is very, very converged. It's really been in the last year that they dropped all pretense of being politically neutral.

I have it in my RSS feed but rarely read it anymore, I just tend to mark all as read move on.

Blogger The Greay Man September 26, 2018 10:27 AM

The anti-SJWs over at KotakuInAction at Reddit finally banned me from the entire Reddit website for 3 days for mentioning Vox one-too-many times. I am sure I get reported to the moderators every single time because, without a doubt, within minutes of even mentioning Vox Day someone shows up to say how terrible of a person Vox is and how irrelevant he is.

And yet, they are trying to push toward "working together" and crap. I wonder if they all listen to Jordan Peterson on the side. Are their rooms clean?

It would be very interesting to see a direct head to head comparison between the total sales figures of, say, Alt*Hero 5 and the monthly figures Marvel/DC titles. I doubt that would be easy to do though.

Blogger Bogey September 26, 2018 11:00 AM

It's funny how the POC comic creators were moved to the front of the line once they were found by Ethan van Soyver. He's been assembling his ethno shield for months now. And the crap they're shilling is basically what you find on the stands every week.

I wasn't in a position to back the original Alt Hero at the time, and I always regretted it. I backed AH:Q, and will be backing Ember War. I look forward to Arkhaven/Dark Legion doing to Marvel and DC's sales numbers what Vox did to Scalzi's blog traffic, and making the SJWs split atoms with the force of the REEs.

On a related note, there needs to be a term for showing an SJW institution's numbers to be based on creative bookkeeping and lies, then subsequently beating them legitimately. Scalzification? Arkhaven is going to Scalzify the comics industry.

"On a related note, there needs to be a term for showing an SJW institution's numbers to be based on creative bookkeeping and lies, then subsequently beating them legitimately. Scalzification?"

Talking of which.....

I've been keeping an eye on the Kindle rank for Ms Marvel #1: No Normal, the #1 bestseller in Mystery graphic novels.

The overall Kindle rank (rank sold in Kindle store) hovers around 1000, usually between 950 and 1100

I haven't been keeping a log, but it does appear that it is generally on the 950 side of things if I check after 12 PM EST.

I asked Jon DelArroz what that translates to; he ballparked that #1000 might mean around 1000 sales/day. I don't know where that comes from, but that means high-end they're spending like $9000 per day on scheduled buys around noon EST.

These people do get seven-figure grants, so that's not too shocking of a number. But if they are REALLY Scalzing, we can expect to find out that Amazon is making sizable donations to the Promote Muslims In Comics Fund...

Blogger Lovekraft September 26, 2018 12:56 PM

I think it was Henry Caville who, when a loyalty test was put to him, replied something along the lines of "I'm sorry you interpreted my statement that way."

Not exactly rhetoric gold, but also not the typical defensive capitulation. It also plants the seed in the accuser's mind that the problem is how they determine truth.

@ 9 CarpeOro:

this quote from a Federalist blog article:

"It reminds me of a political story that goes around in the United Kingdom. A young conservative member of Parliament enters the House of Commons, the lower house of the British Parliament for the first time. Excited, he finds an old conservative veteran and sits next to him, and says “Sir, I cannot express how excited I am to finally see the enemy on the other side of the bench!”

The old veteran conservative smiles and says, “My dear chap, that’s the opposition. The enemies are the fools and cowards on this side behind you.”

SJWs are attacking moderate comic creators who tried to make nice with them. Democrats are attacking Brianna Wu for mildly criticizing the way they use rape allegations. And Egg NeverTrump McMuffin is endorsing the Democrat in Texas. Good week so far.

Blogger DonReynolds September 26, 2018 3:17 PM

I do not begrudge the SJWs wanting their own comic book characters. Comics and cartoons have always been free and open to any and all persuasion. In a free society, there is nothing wrong with that and we had that for many years.

What has changed (it seems to me) is that the SJWs want politically correct funnies to be the ONLY ones. They hate freedom and they hate those who do not abide by their worldview and support the Leftist Liberal agenda. They could, after all, have left the original comic book characters completely alone and unchanged and simply created their own cooky trans and homo characters and titles. Yes, and they could do black and Muslim and hispanic women heroes too, even fat ones, with a patch over one eye. But they did not choose to leave the rest of the world alone because they are convinced that ONLY their SJW viewpoint matters and everyone else must bend at the knee and convert to the new faith....submit or die. Since when do we ever surrender what is ours, leaving us with nothing?

Blogger Solon September 26, 2018 3:22 PM

So, what they're saying is ol' TwoFace and Meyer are "literally Hitler?"

Not one, but TWO HITLERS!? How will the world handle that much hatred?

I'm really tempted to be sarcastic at the last sentence in that quote and point out that Germany was doing REALLY well under Hitler, relative to the Weimar Republic. If it wasn't for those meddling Jews...

Was looking into this, looks like you need to refund and make a new pledge.

If you check your backer confirmation email from Indiegogo, there's a link to review your contribution.

From there, you can request a refund.

I just wonder what anyone, even a shill, could possibly do with 1,000 copies a day. Do they have a large exotic bird collection? Thousands of copies of one comic showing up at the dump day after day is just weird enough someone would say something about it by now.

More than theat. They have no idea how Batman and Spiderman became so popular They think that they can convert the characters to their own ideals without really affecting the prominence of the brand.
They don't understand branding, markets, connecting to their core audience, nothing. They think all they have to do is keep shoving the comics at Diamond and they will continue to own the market.

Steampunk Koala wrote:I just wonder what anyone, even a shill, could possibly do with 1,000 copies a day.
They can inject them back into the distribution pipeline. Some expense in shipping and giving Amazon their vig, but a substantial cost savings over having to print more.

Come to think of it. if they're doing their own fulfillment, they don't even have to pay shipping.

It's a digital cargo cult, they've just shifted from building bamboo C47's to drawing pictures that are vaguely similar to the real thing and binding them into the same size books.

The left is cargo cults all the way down.

They hollow out the host and wear the skinsuit, but can never figure out why the magic stuff it used to do doesn't happen for them too.
