Break them up already!

The God-Emperor is considering the wisdom of subjecting the social media giants to Inquisition:
The White House has drafted an executive order for President Donald Trump’s signature that would instruct federal antitrust and law enforcement agencies to open investigations into the business practices of Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Facebook Inc. and other social media companies.

The order is in its preliminary stages and hasn’t yet been run past other government agencies, according to a White House official. Bloomberg News obtained a draft of the order. The document instructs U.S. antitrust authorities to “thoroughly investigate whether any online platform has acted in violation of the antitrust laws.” It instructs other government agencies to recommend within a month after it’s signed actions that could potentially “protect competition among online platforms and address online platform bias.”

The document doesn’t name any specific companies. If signed, the order would represent a significant escalation of Trump’s antipathy toward Google, Facebook, Twitter and other social media companies, whom he has publicly accused of silencing conservative voices and news sources online. The possibility of an executive order emerged as Attorney General Jeff Sessions prepares for a Sept. 25 briefing by state attorneys general who are already investigating the tech firms’ practices.
This would be such a massively positive development. He really has to go through with this, in light of the way in which these companies are actively campaigning against him and his supporters.

IT IS FINALLY HAPPENING.

Blogger Tars Tarkas September 22, 2018 12:06 PM

At a minimum, they need to be treated like the phone company or electric company. If Twitter journalists have a constitutional right to follow Trump, then we have a constitutional right to have accounts and to not have those accounts molested.

Blogger Silly but True September 22, 2018 12:20 PM

I see two options: Break up Google, Facebook, and Twitter...

Or require each individual companies to hire 100% of its tech staff from skilled pool of African refugees and illegal Mexicans.

Blogger Stg58/Animal Mother September 22, 2018 12:22 PM

Tars is right on. They'd be reduced to the lowly, pedestrian role of the blue collar lineman or sewer plant operator. Noble jobs from our perspective, and necessary for society to function, but not so much from the perspective of social media illuminati.

Blogger RandyB September 22, 2018 12:23 PM

Shut them down outright. Imprison their executives in big-boy prison and deport their workers.

Blogger Jack Amok September 22, 2018 12:27 PM

In an earlier age, this hint would've been enough to change their practices, but since the Age of Aquarius was followed by the Age of the SJW, they will most likely double down on their behavior.

Blogger Gettimothy September 22, 2018 12:27 PM

Announce it with a devastating tweet

Blogger Steb September 22, 2018 12:34 PM

There should be a social media open standard, so you can read Twitter, Gab, Minds and whoever combined in one app, just like you can read emails from any provider.

Urbit is working towards exactly this, although it will be years before it's available.

In the meantime, Trump could force them to stop restricting how their APIs are used, so that 3rd parties can offer amalgamation services. That way Twitter could block you, but your followers would be subscribed through every channel.

Blogger OGRE September 22, 2018 12:39 PM

but, but they are private companies! they should be free from any and all regulations that would prevent them from gaslighting the public and influencing the political process!

Excellent wonderful news.

Blogger Damelon Brinn September 22, 2018 12:53 PM

They just couldn't keep it subtle. They had to come out and scrub Infowars from multiple platforms at the same time so their SJW followers could victory dance all over the net, proving beyond any reasonable doubt that they collude to control the mainstream portion of the online market of ideas.

For the libertarian sperges: these few companies effectively *are* the government online. They prove they are when they make and enforce rules to control movement, association, and speech in that territory. We may have elected them by using their free platforms, but they never swore an oath to any constitution. Meatspace governments at least have to *pretend* to obey a higher authority.

Everyone talking confirmation, Trump acting on the trust busting the social monopolies.

Blogger Garuna September 22, 2018 1:30 PM

This is the executive order that Ali Alexander said Trump would sign weeks ago. But cucks within the administration have slowed the whole thing down. Hopefully he signs it soon. These cucks really are deadweight.

I remember he also wanted to do Tax Cuts first for a quick victory in his first 100 days. But the cucks pushed for Healthcare and what a disaster that turned out to be.

Trump's only problem is the cucks and backstabbers. He'd be in a better place if he just followed his instincts all the time.

Breaking them up / regulating them is not the solution as they will remain in business and sooner or later the regulators will get in bed with them. Forcing them to uphold the first amendment and making them liable for every transgression might be a smarter way to go as incessant lawsuits would tie them up and bleed them dry in short order. Lawfare has worked for the left for decades, it's time to make it work for us too.

The USA is already late to the party, since the Europeans have already invoked anti-trust laws (and huge fines, and other regulations) to take away the discretion and latitude of the Tech Giants while operating in Europe. The Tech Giants may as well agree to the Leftist Liberal agenda in Europe because the governments there are not bothered by any nonsense about free speech, because there is no such right for European citizens.

The European wars have convinced the governments there that it simply was not possible to stay out of the propaganda game and let the Media do whatever they individually chose, according to their own personal ideology. Such freedom of the press has not existed in Europe since the English Civil War. (Neither the Nazis nor the Kaiser invented propaganda.)

My personal favorite anti-trust case, which was ultimately decided by the Supreme Court, was the Brown Shoe case 370 US 294 (1962). Brown Shoe (manufacturer) and Kenney Shoe (retail) attempted a vertical merger in violation of the Clayton Anti-Trust Act. Even though the two firms only had 5 percent of the shoe business, this merger was held to have a significant impact on competition and thus in restraint of trade. Five percent was sufficient to invoke anti-trust, yet the Tech Giants have managed lately to control much higher percentages of the tech industry without challenge, thus their monopoly powers.

The last serious challenge I can recall in the Tech Industry was the attempt to pull back Lotus from claiming that all spreadsheets were infringing on their copyright (under "look and feel" criteria), thus creating an automatic monopoly. Lotus lost that fight. This was similar to the Wright Brothers claiming royalties from all aircraft manufacturers. Henry Ford finally refused to pay and the game was broken.

There is an inherent conflict between government-granted copyrights, patents, and trademarks on the one hand (which create monopoly power) and the anti-trust laws that oppose the creation of monopoly power.

The First Amendment only applies to the Congress, no other entity, despite what the courts say. (Just read the text.) The absurd notion that the 14th Amendment alters this relies on the courts magically attaining the power to alter the text of the Constitution via "incorporation". (A lot of what is passed off as "Constitutional Law" is to the Constitution what the Talmud is to the Torah.)

pyrrhus wrote:YES YES YES! and RandyB wrote:Shut them down outright. Imprison their executives in big-boy prison and deport their workers.
I agree; there's more than enough evidence to smash them apart with RICO. (The relative ease [and non-enforcement] of things like immigration and H1B/H2B mean it's been easy for them to fraudulently import workers.)

Trump could absolutely devastate Tech, Defense, Disney, and Hollywood, as well as possibly a HUGE chunk of Lobbyists, with one simple directive to the Patent and Copyright Offices: invalidate ALL patents and copyrights granted to entities who are not the actual author(s) or inventor(s). (A corporation can be neither an author nor inventor, but can only commission actual authors and inventors to produce.)

VD wrote:This would be such a massively positive development. He really has to go through with this, in light of the way in which these companies are actively campaigning against him and his supporters.
Indeed so; and what's surprising is that it's the smallest step on several options which would also be massive.

DonReynolds wrote:There is an inherent conflict between government-granted copyrights, patents, and trademarks on the one hand (which create monopoly power) and the anti-trust laws that oppose the creation of monopoly power.
This is ONLY because of two things:
(1) Copyright length has been extended to ridiculous proportions: up to 99-years, longer than the average citizen's lifespan.
(2) Patent and Copyright have been expanded to entities other than the original/actual Authors and Inventors, namely corporations.

Slightly O/T but is it feasible to set up Castalia Books to store a kindle email address? That way you could buy from it and have the books appear exactly as they do from Amazon.

Maybe the setup costs are too great, but an open-source storefront that did that would be a great way to take a chunk out of the Bezos monopoly.

Having Mencius Moldbug in charge of a project basically makes it SJW proof. Who are they going to kick out if they're keeping in the pro-slavery guy?

To be fair, they did get Linus in the end, but by the time Urbit is developed enough to keep functioning without its founder, its going to be uncontrolable. It's a network, rather than a server, so there's nothing to control.

"... there's more than enough evidence to smash them apart with RICO."

I want to see these corporations destroyed, but I want to see leaders of these corporations go to jail via the RICO act even more. They are clearly trying to control American politics and doing so with vast help from the government itself.

We beat down these bastards are we are in deep trouble. I hope The Donald realizes this.

Blogger Roddie Piper September 22, 2018 4:13 PM

Or we could say that when a social media company pulls a person's account without good cause, it has committed libel, and must immediately pay that person $20 million dollars or cease operations. We need to make it such that signalling liberal virtue = volunteering to pay off the national debt.

Of course my idea, like yours, fails the chicken-and-egg test. We cannot hold social media to account until we have power over them, which won't happen until after we defeat them.

He also pushes miscegenation as the solution to our problems. He incessantly brags about having mestizos in his family.
But he is OK at pointing out flaws of the left.

The precedent for Federal interference in communications was set by FDR threatening to pull the licenses of broadcasters that made the wrong noises. No wonder they all turned "left". Let Trump do the same and turn them all "right". (((They))) killed free speech themselves so let's outlaw theirs first as they try to silence us.

I know nothing of anti-trust law in part because it has not been enforced much in my lifetime if at all.

US 'conservatives' have been no help in that cheap stuff for consumers is their only metric. Europe considers other factors. It will look partisan for the US govt to suddenly take an interest in anti-trust law after ignoring it in all other sectors, with banking and meatpacking being only a couple examples. I believe 4 meatpackers control 80% of US production.

@44: I've been advocating for this for years. In particular, there is no public need served by having four Leftist TV networks and no even pseudo-conservative networks. One set of Leftists will suffice...and the frequencies can be reallocated to military uses. UAVs eat bandwidth.

Blogger MJ Meyers September 22, 2018 11:17 PM

I've been advocating a trust bust of tech companies since July 2017. I wrote a post on it that has lots of links to other sources, documenting tech companies' misdeeds, if anyone's curious. Of course, the problem has gotten a lot worse since '17 summer when I wrote it. And trust busts take a long time to resolve. If the process is started now, it might not even finish until after Trump's 8 years is up. It's something that needs to be done, but we need to build and/or support the replacements in the mean time.
