Mediocre author denies authorial intent

One of the reasons John Scalzi has never been able to lift himself out of mediocrity except by coloring Robert Heinlein by the numbers is that he doesn't understand the first thing about understand and creating characters. Or, apparently, self-contradiction.
“I created Bert,” says Frank Oz. “I know what and who he is.” And no, he isn’t gay.

John Scalzi
Frank Oz says that Bert's not gay and he should know because he created him. I mean, Frank, a lot of parents feel the same, but then their kids come out anyway.

John Scalzi
To the folks who are asserting that fictional characters don't have genders, or orientations, or have physical sex: I think you may be doing fiction wrong.

Mark Kern
Okay Scalzi, all your characters in all your novels are Trump loving, cis, Republicans. I demand you acknowledge that. You too, JK Rowling. I don’t care if you created them.
McRapey is so dumb that he doesn't even understand the intrinsic self-contradiction of his expressed positions. First, Frank Oz is correct; the creator defines the character. If we can unilaterally declare, ex post facto, that Bert and Ernie are gay, then we can also declare that Darth Vader is not Luke's father, but rather, Luke's Sigma Chi fraternity brother, that Gimli is not a Dwarf, but a short, bearded Elf, and that Dumbledore is a pedophile who repeatedly abused Harry Potter.

Actually, it might not be long before JK Rowling, in her enthusiasm for all things LGBTP, self-righteously announces the latter. It would explain a lot about those tedious novels.

In any event, the idea that fictional characters have genders, orientations, and engage in sex, but that their characteristics and behaviors are not established by their creators is not only self-contradictory, it is as intrinsically nonsensical as claiming that a man is really a woman.

Of course, if Scalzi's monovocal dialogue is any guide, all of his characters, male and female, human and alien, are actually himself. Which may explain his incompetence with regards to these matters.

Gays are naturally in the closet, repressed, nasty creatures. That’s where they should remain. Authors should stop trying to dream up gay characters who lack virtue and compelling storylines.

The analogy with raising children is quite weird. Inventing a fictional character out of nothing and raising a real human being from infancy are not remotely the same thing…unless…is John Scalzi just making up his daughter? Is she just the long-running fantasy of a severely mentally disturbed man?

“Of course, if Scalzi's monovocal dialogue is any guide, all of his characters, male and female, human and alien, are actually himself.”

You know, I recently read Old Man’s War so I’d have a leg to stand on when it came to criticizing, or not, Scalzi’s writing. It was technically well-written, had some fun ideas, and the dialogue was snappy . . . but every character sounded the same and the snark overload almost killed me. I remember thinking: “Grown, adult males and females DO NOT TALK LIKE THIS.”

It really took me five seconds to realize that each character spoke like Scalzi’s blog and Twitter feed.

Monovocal authorial stand-in indeed.

Blogger Azimus September 20, 2018 8:38 AM

This Bert & Ernie thing reminds me of a passage from "That Hideous Strength" by CS Lewis. I forget which characters are talking, but one of them, an evil character who worked for the Institute, is talking about destroying trees and replacing them with fake ones. The character hates the real tree, but loves the lifeless plastic copy. The Institute, and its director the father of lies, is always trying to destroy the beautiful, destroy the innocent, and replace it with grotesque copies, hideous caricatures of the original. Bert and Ernie are a cherished childhood characters to millions. This attempted infiltration by liars is only an attempt to destroy and smear a beautiful thing, and make millions of peoples lives just a little uglier. It never ceases to amaze me - the enemy really does rejoice in ugliness, hate, fear, and ultimately destruction.

You know how I know Bert isn't gay? His obsession with pigeons.

That's some high-level Omega trait right there.

The only reason (I believe) Ernie is living with him is because Ernie, deep down, feels sorry for Bert and doesn't want him to be alone. That's got nothing to do with carnal desires and everything to do with being a decent human being.

And I say this as having grand-uncles that lived together for years before they eventually passed on. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices to ensure that others have the potential to survive.

This makes Ernie an even bigger hero than he already was to my young self.

Promotion and belief in continental philosophy has lowered the West's IQ by a few points, simply by virtue of it actively discouraging (and often mocking) the need to think critically.

The left praise Jacque Derridas as one of their seminal philosophers. And Derridas claimed not only that there can be infinite interpretations of any text but that even the author himself doesn't know the correct interpretation of his text (i.e. the author's own interpretation can change over time, prior and post publishing, or even throughout writing the text).

Since there is no truth (according to these people), only consensus (or "what works" as the pragmatists believe), the truth of a text is simply what the majority of forces within a culture claim it to be. And if the media, academia, and entertainment industries all claim B&E are gay, then, they are gay.

Just like, when take over the culture in the future, we'll remind the left that B&E have always been Christian warriors on a mission to repel Islamic invaders.

I saw an interview with Frank Oz up close and live at SXSW a few years ago. It was the best moment of the conference. The guy exudes both complete confidence in his work and a striking humility. You could tell he had the utmost respect for everyone he worked with.

When asked what he wished to be known for long after he was gone, given his large body of work, he said, with no thought or hesitation:

"I just want to be a good father."

@37 I saw an interview of Ray Bradbury talking about Fahrenheit 451. He described a visit to a classroom and was talking about the book to the professor and students. The professor was talking about what he meant by various things in the book and Bradbury denied what she thought the meanings were. The professor tells him that he doesn't know what he's talking about and that her interpretation is right.

The LGBTP movement always ends up justifying the sexualization of children. Their earlier professed libertine attitude about keeping the government out of their bedroom was always a lie. Homosexual marriage was never about taxes or last rites in the hospital, it was always about adopting children. The trannie stuff is about creating freaks of nature with puberty blocking hormones. In the end, it's always about buggering children with these people.

Had a best friend who lived in another state. We would meet in a town somewhere between us when we got together to reduce drive time and share a hotel room. By his 'logic' we must have to be gay, because that's the way he would see it, and any observer I guess gets to define what we are. The fact that the gay writer infused his writing of those characters with his own bias means nothing other than he polluted what the creator of the characters intended. Some create - the left pollutes and tears down..

Many authors seem confused about how to write a gay character. It seems the industry practice is to make no reference to it until years after the fact, and certainly not in the text.

I don't pillory these authors for the sexuality of their characters, but if what they say is true they were cowards. If what they say isn't true, liars and opportunists. Why would you rush to take up such an ignoble mantle for yourself?

I have no clue. The only thing I know about Harry Potter is that I recognize a couple character names, the actress who played the leading female role has turned into one of the most conceited, insufferable bitches on the planet -- on the basis of having a hole between her legs, and that story contains some sort of game played on flying broomsticks.

Although "it's all in good fun," it also struck me as the same kind of "fun" as ouija boards... and whenever someone pulls one of THOSE out at a party, I leave the house.
