Trump speech transcript

This is the transcript of the President's speech last night. - VD

Tonight, I am speaking to you because there is a growing humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border. Every day customs and border patrol agents encounter thousands of illegal immigrants trying to enter our country. We are out of space to hold them and we have no way to promptly return them back home to their country. America proudly welcomes millions of lawful immigrants who enrich our society and contribute to our nation. But, all Americans are hurt by uncontrolled illegal migration. It strains public resources and drives down jobs and wages. Among those hardest hit are African-Americans and Hispanic Americans. Our southern border is a pipeline for vast quantities of illegal drugs, including meth, heroin, cocaine and fentanyl. Every week 300 of our citizens are killed by heroin alone, 90 percent of which floods across from our southern border. More Americans will die from drugs this year than were killed in the entire Vietnam War.

In the last two years, ICE officers made 266,000 arrests of aliens with criminal records including those charged or convicted of 100,000 assaults, 30,000 sex crimes, and 4,000 violent killings. Over the years thousands of Americans have been brutally killed by those who illegally entered our country and thousands more lives will be lost if we don't act right now. This is a humanitarian crisis, a crisis of the heart and a crisis of the soul.

Last month, 20,000 migrant children were illegally brought into the united States, a dramatic increase. These children are used as human pawns by vicious coyotes and ruthless gangs. One in three women are sexually assaulted on the dangerous trek up through Mexico. Women and children are the biggest victims by far of our broken system. This is the tragic reality of illegal immigration on our southern border. This is the cycle of human suffering that I am determined to end.

My administration has presented Congress with a detailed proposal to secure the border and stop the criminal gangs, drug smugglers and human traffickers. It's a tremendous problem. Our proposal was developed by law enforcement professionals and border agents at the department of homeland security. These are the resources they have requested to properly perform their mission and keep America safe. In fact, safer than ever before. The proposal from Homeland Security includes cutting-edge technology for detecting drugs, weapons, illegal contraband and many other things. We have requested more agents, immigration judges, and bed space to process the sharp rise in unlawful migration fueled by our very strong economy. Our plan also contains an urgent request for humanitarian assistance and medical support. Furthermore, we have asked Congress to close border security loopholes so that illegal immigrant children can be safely and humanely returned back home. Finally, as part of an overall approach to border security, law enforcement professionals have requested $5.7 billion for a physical barrier. At the request of Democrats, it will be a steel barrier rather than a concrete wall.

This barrier is absolutely critical to border security. It's also what our professionals at the border want and need. This is just common sense. The border wall would very quickly pay for itself. The cost of illegal drugs exceeds $500 billion a year. Vastly more than the $5.7 billion we have requested from Congress. The wall will always be paid for indirectly by the great new trade deal we have made with Mexico. Sen. Chuck Schumer, who you will be hearing from later tonight, has repeatedly supported a physical barrier in the past along with many other Democrats. They changed their mind only after I was elected president. Democrats in Congress have refused to acknowledge the crisis. And they have refused to provide our brave border agents with the tools they desperately need to protect our families and our nation. The federal government remains shut down for one reason and one reason only because Democrats will not fund border security. My administration is doing everything in our power to help those impacted by the situation. But the only solution is for Democrats to pass a spending bill that defends our borders and reopens the government. This situation could be solved in a 45-minute meeting. I have invited congressional leadership to the White House tomorrow to get this done. Hopefully, we can rise above partisan politics in order to support national security.

Some have suggested a barrier is immoral. Then why do wealthy politicians build walls, fences and gates around their homes? They don't build walls because they hate the people on the outside, but because they love the people on the inside. The only thing that is immoral is for the politicians to do nothing and continue to allow more innocent people to be so horribly victimized. America's heart broke the day after Christmas when a young police officer in California was savagely murdered in cold blood by an illegal alien who just came across the border. The life of an American hero was stolen by someone who had no right to be in our country.

Day after day, precious lives are cut short by those who have violated our borders. In California, an Air Force veteran was raped, murdered and beaten to death with a hammer by an illegal alien with a long criminal history. In Georgia, an illegal alien was recently charged with murder for killing, beheading and dismembering his neighbor. In Maryland, MS-13 gang members who arrived in the United States as unaccompanied minors were arrested and charged last year after viciously stabbing and beating a 16-year-old girl. Over the last several years, I have met with dozens of families whose loved ones were stolen by illegal immigration. I've held the hands of the weeping mothers and embraced the grief-stricken fathers. So sad. So terrible. I will never forget the pain in their eyes, the tremble in their voices and the sadness gripping their souls. How much more American blood must we shed before Congress does its job?

For those who refuse to compromise in the name of in the name of border security, I would ask, imagine if it was your child, your husband or your wife whose life was so cruelly shattered and totally broken. To every member of Congress, pass a bill that ends this crisis. To every citizen, call Congress and tell them to finally, after all of these decades, secure our border. This is a choice between right and wrong, justice and injustice. This is about whether we fulfill our sacred duty to the American citizens we serve. When I took the oath of office, I swore to protect our country. And that is what I will always do so help me God. Thank you and good night.

I've been seeing pictures of signs saying "EBT Processing is down due to government shutdown".

Anyone familiar with retail food operations know if this is true?

Blogger Sherwood family January 09, 2019 7:04 AM

So long as the GE is truly willing to play hardball this is one he can't lose. The longer Trump can drag out the pain the better. 95% of the FedGov wouldn't vote for him if you paid them. Bleeding them dry is big step in draining The Swamp. If he can hold firm and drag this thing out for two months there are whole areas of D.C. and its environs that are going to be in serious pain. These are Dem constituencies and they are going to be ready to eat Schumer and Pelosi after a couple more weeks. Especially if EBT processing is out of order. The GE can force the Dems to the table after crushing them in front of their constituents.

Blogger Stilicho January 09, 2019 7:10 AM

Well, we've heard what he said. Decent speech, great ending implying action to come. Lets see what he does now.

The democRATs' future depends on immivasion so I don't see them ever voting for the wall unless they get something huge out of it. DACA would be a big victory for them (and every immigration judge will accept anyone between 8 months and 80 years who claims to have been brought here as a minor, so it's effectively the 86 amnesty again), but maybe not big enough if the wall is as effective as we think it will be.

Blogger Dominik K. January 09, 2019 7:10 AM

I'd prefer if he would let the military build a beautiful wall instead of the few hundred miles of fence, which seems to be the best outcome of a deal with the Democrats. But as Vox already said: he love to negotiate.

Blogger Dirk Manly January 09, 2019 7:16 AM

Trump has another rule -- whatever the resolution of the negotiations, he DOES get what he wants. He'll concede anything that he deems unimportant. And his idea of unimportant generally correlates very well with our idea of unimportant.

We will get a complete wall -- count on it.

Canadians are making an effort to stop illegal immigration with their yellow-vest demonstrations on Saturdays. But they are afraid of being called racists such that their website featured a Sikh in a yellow vest, not a Canadian, of course, and I listened to hours of weekly podcasts of one concerned citizen who only recently mentioned their goal was not to stop all immigration, just control the borders, and choose which countries (without naming the Mohammedans). He is correct to be afraid of naming an identifiable group because it is illegal in Canada to do such, and he is putting his face on the broadcasts, not anonymous, and we are at risk of being charged by the party tribunal courts.

The Sikh photo is moved to second, I see:

https://yellowvestscanada.net/events.html

And this civic nationalism sentiment: "We do NOT promote or encourage ethno-nationalism in any way. We cannot Unite when we Divide."

https://yellowvestscanada.net/about.html

Apparently blacks from Africa are coming in at four times the rate of a few years ago. Filipino and Indian are the largest annual immigration into Ontario. Canada's official legal immigration rate by proportion of population was recently raised to 3.5 times USA's, up from 2.5 times USA's under the Conservative Party.

I try to get the discussion going toward nationalism without being negative about their efforts. Few are there, yet. Or maybe they are there and Islam is more obviously a problem. I forced myself to speak up, on that basis, as the time is right.

Civ Nationalism isn't even a pebble-sized speed-bump to the Immivasion/Displacement (of Heritage Americans) and as long as social mood (measured by the DJIA) is nearly 90% of (so far) maximum altitude, Trump's Civ Nat sentiments are all we're going to get.

The shock troops of the Left are active; the Right's are still clinging to jobs and mortgages and too-much-to-lose. The rest of Heritage America is still far too complacent and optimistic to even think of being called a homophobe, much less branded a (horror-of-horrors) racist or Nazi.

No Army can force an idea whose time has not yet arrived. The 5% of Heritage America that is already seething in rage is enough to run a full-scale rebellion, but until social mood is in place to fuel it, the Right is like a Saturn V rocket motor without fuel.

Like the Nation-State, Democracy's time came and went. Democracy is leftist to its core, and oligarchs who see democracy as a path to permanent power (via importing a vast mercenary army of voters to crush the Right's voters in battle) do not realize that this very strategy will be central to the utter destruction of democracy as an "ideal."

Who imagines that the very people who keep the lights on and the food on store shelves will accept their and their children's permanent, coerced position as slave-animals whipped for the pleasure of an over-class of scum? If a future North America had 30% "Heritage Americans" supporting a vast occupying army of Aztecs, (Dot) Indians, East Asians, Africans and MENAs, who is stupid enough to think the latter coalition's boot, stomping on the face of the former is Orwell's permanent future? [Just because they're a voting majority?]

We stand at the end of an era. The dinosaurs of the past don't realize that small is the future, and mass consumption, mass politics and mass culture (and all the Poz that they support) are at the end of their lifespans.

We're just (im)patiently waiting for the inevitable turn of the wheel.

Yes, it inconveniences those who needed some govt employee to manage something that shouldn't be managed by the govt anyway... but you can BET those PoS's Schumer and Pelosi just send an aide to go stand on line for an hour for anything THEY need!

Charles Lindbergh knew what we were up against before WWII even started. He said flat-out that hordes of "inferior blood" would try to invade Western Civilization. I try to figure out what he meant by that--since he saw the humanity in everyone, but from what he could see, things sure weren't working out for them materially and / or politically. He'd flown over the rest of the world and knew what was out there--starvation, disease, poverty, death, Communism. He understood what a heritage of Christianity had given us--and you cannot fathom how it pained him to walk through the cemeteries of WWI in France, "fields of crosses" in cemeteries on both sides. Later in life, he changed a little, realizing that other civilizations were more in touch with the elements and that gave them a peace and wisdom civilized seemed to lack. Nevertheless, he knew his heritage was his own, and he went on to father seven more children with three different German women, to help build up those devastated populations. Was this fair to his wife? To one who had already given him 6 children? Maybe not, though at age 49 she aborted their last child, and had several affairs. If they hadn't been in the spotlight, I'm sure they would have quietly divorced.

What is my point? We shouldn't even be in the position of Trump having to give the above speech! It saddens me to see what Lindbergh predicted happening. He wasn't a highly educated man, but centuries of hardship had bred into him strong instincts for preservation and protection of those he loved.

It is hard to have sons right now. I can only hope that whatever lies ahead will bring them closer to God.

Blogger dc.sunsets January 09, 2019 10:08 AM

Real change will come, not by a POTUS giving a speech, but by a sweeping change to the Mass Mind of North Americans. Real change doesn't come when stock prices are in the ionosphere. Never in history has real change occurred during times of maniacally high optimism and complacency.

Has the trend change begun? Has a long-lived political fad ("e pluribus unum") reached the end of its lifespan? Has the collective trust that witnessed the largest Popular Delusion and Madness of Crowds buildup in debt-treated-as-wealth finally reached apogee and, like a cliff-diver who climbed a Mount Everest from which to begin his dive, we're about to rediscover just how far down is the destination that awaits?

It beats me. Trump was and remains a signal, an indicator that enough people have peeled away from manic optimism/trust to see a course change at the level of POTUS. Are we far better off than would be the case under an HRC Administration? Egads, yes. But Trump isn't and never will be the kind of man who fully grasps what has been squandered, and no one who has to genuflect at the "look how many [fill-in-the-minority] friends I have" alter is qualified to lead the coming revolution.

My $0.02 prediction: In coming years we'll see utter financial catastrophe as hundreds of trillions in "wealth" a trusting people valued in an ocean of IOU's filled during the Bond Bull Market comes crashing down. This will usher in some political changes, but the real fireworks will arrive decades later when, after a period of rising prosperity gives people the hope that all is returning to "normal," that uptrend also collapses and destroys the nascent hope in people's hearts.

That will be when the Yugoslavian War comes to North America.

I hate the pandering to blacks and Hispanics while we remain unmentionable. 10s of thousands of whites are killing themselves deliberately or dying of drug overdoses. White males are losing ground on life expectancy because of it. Nobody cares or can even mention it if they do. The only thing they really ever say about it is insults to the weak white male.

It was definitely a great speech. If the call to action at the end results in action, great things might yet come from it. Trump has much in common with the Right.

I expect the Senate GOP is trying desperately to cuck. Pray that Trump can hold their feet to the fire, and that the burns are deep, and instructive.

The House is off that hook, since Trump chose to wait until the GOP lost control there. I expect that many House GOP-ers will bravely stand with Trump since it doesn't matter and won't impede their Leftist agenda.

The judiciary is still firmly anti-American, and anti-Trump. Pray that Trump finally stands up to them.

The Deep State is just biding its time as always; since Trump hasn't cleaned house, they will be there long after he's gone. Pray that Trump eventually cleans house there, before it's too late.

Funny thing with this pandering, is that it isn't even hurting blacks that much. This immigration hurts whites more than anyone. The Mexicans do low paying work that would be automated without them, but they are displacing white voters and white towns and neighborhoods. The so-called legal immigrants are devastating white workers, not black workers. The main thing hurting blacks is Hispanics taking over their ghettos.

The laughing at white pain is just utterly despicable. No society has ever been as sick as we are.

Agreed. As I noted last month, Trump's window grows shorter each day. He seems to fail to grasp the fact that deep-staters like Schumer and Pelosi (and Lindsay Graham, et al) are never going to actually make a deal - because they don't make deals as a rule and don't uphold their end of deals they might make to buy more time. He's going to have to cross the Rubicon and just do it. If he doesn't the stomach for it, his administration is essentially finished - reduced to a 1986 Reagan re-run. Ongoing invasions aside (yes they're still coming in), 2018 saw massive, unprecedented election fraud on a national scale - and not a damned thing done about it. The deep-state and its numerous SES (Soros Employment Service) types in all levels of the Banana Empire's bureaucracy have fought Trump on every single issue - with his "National Security Advisor" (the warmonger walrus) now running around reversing Trump's announcement of withdrawal from Syria and Afghanistan. If he fails to move, we'll see some other SES appointee walking back the promise of a 'barrier'. No deals, just build it and shut the damned border down. Talk is cheap unless its backed up by action.

Agree completely....
He could have used the occasion to announce any number of things.

National Emergency
Martial Law in the border region
Military order to build the wall
Call for American Volunteers to help build the wall, like the CCC
Step up interior enforcement
Deport the million and a half of those defying orders of removal by the immigration courts

Or how about a new Executive Order regarding E-verify, or voter fraud, track down the felons for incarceration, drug and gun smuggling crackdown, including gang activity, cooperation with local law enforcement, stop funding of sanctuary cities and states, any number of things.

Since when does the opposition in Congress get to respond immediately after a presidential address to the nation? I am pretty sure Piglosi and Chucky got much more camera and microphone time than Trump was allowed for his very brief address. I could not bear more than a few seconds of their dribble at a time.

FDR held "fireside chats" with the American people on the radio. There was no Republican rebuttal that followed immediately. I cannot honestly recall the opposition party in Congress requesting "equal (or greater) time" or being allowed to turn a presidential address to the nation into a party debate. I think Trump saw it as a choice between

1) strong-arm the Republicans in the House to bend their knee, thereby alienating the remainder of them for the next 2 years, or

2) Wait until the new Congress is sworn in, and start this 2-year session by giving Pelosi a bloody nose right from the start. If he can win this, he'll have her cowed for the next two years, and her "resistance" followers will be thrown into a real tizzy, and the less committed might drop out.

"Just what did he announce, besides call your Congress?"

Congress needs to feel the heat -- especially the new Democratic Party congress critters.

Setting the Capitol Hill switchboard on fire will pressure them into agreeing to a deal. Let's hope that Trump is smart enough to insist ... that the Wall funding gets front-loaded, rather than a couple years into the future, when a future congress (even if composed of the same people) is under absolutely zero obligation to uphold that part of the bargain. Let THEM worry about how they are going to fund the things they want 4-6 years from now.
[Of course, we know that welfare outlays for illegals will drop by tens of $Billions......]

Blogger Random #57 January 09, 2019 3:15 PM

@37 Dirk Manly:

I came to much the same conclusions a little while ago, and they got me to reevaluating Trump's seriousness about the Wall. Pretty early on, very possibly before he decided to run, he realized that he'd never get the Wall without a full scale war with GOPe including the House. The math made losing the Senate in 2018 very unlikely, and he put a great deal of effort into making sure that wouldn't happen, dragging at least one candidate across the finish line, but betting on an intransigent House betraying the base and losing their majority? All but certain, and something he could influence by not going all out for them.

Now he has an ideal political setup, with Pelosi as the face and brain of the House opposition. While McConnell could in theory force through a favorable vote on the Wall using reconciliation or other methods like the nuclear option ("in theory" because I'll bet some number of Republicans would fall on their swords for the Chamber of Commerce et. al.), for now the filibuster is the official obstacle and the very much not up to it and almost as unphotogenic Schumer is the face of the Senate opposition.

I still don't see a path to victory, but we've learned not to underestimate Trump.

Dirk, do you really think that the House GOP was not alienated against Trump since 2015? More to the point, do you really think that Trump didn't already see most of them as being implacably against him?

In any event, it's too late now, the Left openly controls the House, and so those GOP representatives who need to pretend to be on the Right will reliably vote for Trump, secure in the knowledge that their openly Left Dem colleagues will outvote them.

``If only we had the House,'' the GOP establishment will wail, while praying that they never again are embarrassed by having the House.

See my previous comment, and I add there are many degrees of alienation, like their impeaching Trump, or a war between them outing so many the Democrats ... well, I'm not sure a supermajority was in the cards, but they could have taken even greater losses in 2018. And we'd have to be sad about even more NeverTrumpers like Mia Love, adding a bunch flushed out of hiding. This lack of Love is really hitting me in the feels, let me tell you...

Maybe that would have resulted in a better long term outcome, or maybe McConnell would have totally stiffed him on appointments, as he almost is by refusing to let the Senate go into recess.

In the end, which may not be more than two years away, *everybody* will abandon voting precisely because it will be seen (correctly) as the way that "they" can gain power (over "us"). So *nobody* will trust it or want it.

Blogger Ominous Cowherd January 09, 2019 3:27 PM

@39, I agree that Trump is likely to see a Dem House as a plus. He's going to be more comfortable fighting openly against the House Dems than against the House GOP. Senile Pelosi is going to be a big help, as long as she can hold onto her gavel.

We used to call the Dems the Evil Party and the GOP the Stupid Party, but now they are looking like the Crazy Evil Party and the Covert Evil Party, respectively. Better to fight the openly crazy.

He still has to deal with a covert Leftist majority in the Senate, and there he will have to fight the GOPe.

He is amazingly clever, and the N-dimensional chess stuff isn't totally bogus.

On the other hand, part of the reason that we cannot see a path to victory may just be that Trump's victory conditions aren't our victory conditions. He is pretty good at getting what he wants, and that isn't 100% what we want.

They start processing SNAP/EBT around the 3rd week of the month in prep for the 1st of the month. The closer we get to that date means that we will see those payments will be late.
If that occurs, there will be leftists rioting in the street.

You are wrong.

The DJIA is pretty much completely divorced from indicating social mood, and that is because it isn't really measuring American work or ability to purchase — as the American Free Corps post shows in microcosm — the people [at least in these industries] see & experience the displacement happening. And while it's absolutely absurdly obvious in Tech, the abuse heaped on job-applicants there is bleeding out to other industries/sectors, just look at the ridiculousness on /r/recutinghell. (Granted, it tends to be tech-heavy, but you can see a general trend even ignoring the Tech posts.)

If you change unemployment-numbers to not count people looking for more than three days, you instantly get a huge drop in "unemployed"... but this has no effect on the actual, real number of unemployed.

TL;DR — Manipulated numbers are manipulated, and can be until they're meaningless.

Trump's speech proves that he fails to understand the true nature of his enemy. Leftism is a secular religious cult. Both it and Mohammedanism are on the ascendancy, while Christianity is the inherently weak horse that is fading fast and may not even survive. For a leftist, in any contest between morality and logic, or morality and reality, their morality always takes precedence. Leftists are eager to sacrifice you, your family, and your nation on the bloody altar of their holy fantasies.

It's bullshit. My Friend is on food stamps, and I took her to get groceries today. No problems getting her allowance, processing, or spending the EBT.

I think an actual action like the above tweet, or letting the House show their overt Treason by adhering to the US's enemies, would really get the ball rolling on cleaning house. That or attacking the massive and now-institutionalized H1B fraud, will essentially drop the mask and show plain-as-day who re against the average American.

That's a SOTU

Not entirely, check the footnotes on that page. There have been a couple other presidential messages that got opposition responses, and a couple where the opposition didn't offer one.

I agree with you about the inappropriateness of a political response to an Oval Office address, but I get why people wouldn't make the distinction between that and a SOTU, when the media has a third of the country convinced the invasion is just a political football, if not a hoax. Letting Pelosi and Schumer yammer generally seems to work out, anyway.

"I still don't see a path to victory, but we've learned not to underestimate Trump."

Whatever path to victory might exist, it is both narrow and twisty.

And nearly all of Trumps adult life, as a real estate developer, in which EVERY project he embarks on threatens some some significant political donor's ricebowl. Maneuvering for major real estate projects typically takes YEARS before the first shovel of dirt is moved, and has force the man to become VERY adept at the following with relation to politicians:

1) Smoke out exactly WHO the backstabbers are
2) Goad them into revealing themselves in a way which alienates the public against them
3) Wait for elections to clear out those enemies
4) Repeat until the local political body finally gives the stamp of approval
5) Until the project is finished, remain on the lookout for new initiatives/excuses to postpone or cancel it.

"Dirk, do you really think that the House GOP was not alienated against Trump since 2015? More to the point, do you really think that Trump didn't already see most of them as being implacably against him?"

Of course he did. Otherwise legislation for the wall would have been passed in February 2017, if not January.

Let's hope that the Covertly Evil Party bets that maintaining any sense of credibility requires distancing themselves as far as possible from the Overtly Crazy Party.

In naval terms, this is rotating the gun turrets towards the cargo ship which is refusing to respond to hailing calls.

Next move will be a shot "across the bow"
(We have you well-targetted, and will sink you if you don't come to a stop as quickly as possible.)

I think Pelosi is too drugged up (and power mad) to even fathom what's coming if she doesn't start playing ball. Schumer, although a sane and credible opponent, doesn't even matter, as he doesn't control the Senate.

Trump also made the point that opposing his objectives got a LOT of Republicans ousted for their perfidery, and that the key to re-election for anyone with an (R) after his name is supporting him.

He's playing them like fiddles.

Blogger Edgar Abbey January 09, 2019 8:17 PM

The outcome I see as most likely and most unsatisfactory is that Trump will declare the budget negotiations a failure, order the wall construction to begin as a national emergency, and then sign the budget. Shortly thereafter, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals declares an indefinite stoppage of all wall construction. The impasse remains until Trump is out of office, and then the project is quietly shelved. Illegals continue to pour into the country like a river of raw sewage across a cultivated landscape.

Yes, they looked so bad that I have a hard time staying mad about it. They shot themselves in the face on this one.

And in any case, they opened the door to official responses to OO speeches by future Dem presidents as well. Beto announces an invasion of Iran, and Majority Leader Rand Paul says "lol we won't fund it." stuff like that.

Following up:

"And nearly all of Trumps adult life, as a real estate developer, in which EVERY project he embarks on threatens some some significant political donor's ricebowl. Maneuvering for major real estate projects typically takes YEARS before the first shovel of dirt is moved,"

I can give an example in Michigan.

Detroit is connected to Windsor, Ontario by the crossings:
1) The Michigan Central Railway Tunnel -- 2 tracks

2) Detroit-Windsor Tunnel -- 2 lanes. It runs from the center of downtown Detroit to the center of downtown Windsor, so is generally avoided by all commercial traffic except taxicabs, due to heavy congestion in downtown Windsor from 6 AM to about 12 PM plus rather narrow streets.

3) the Ambassador Bridge (which carries almost all commercial trucking). 2 lanes each direction. Significantly more inspection booths for passenger vehicle traffic, and facilities exclusively constructed for tractor-trailer inspections, including an extremely large, X-ray imagining machine with the sensor permanently affixed to a trailer. There is also a facility for load brokering for commercial drivers, who, for whatever reason, immigration will not be allowed into the other country, so that the load can be transferred to another truck -- usually a driver from the other side who was also turned back immigration.
So, Canadian-side drivers turned back by US Immigration, and US-side drivers turned back by Immigration Canada all meet go to the brokers, and find someone from the other side to take their load, while also finding someone's load to take (get your mind out of the San Fransisco gutter). Typically not swaps. Trucks pull in, drop their load, go into the brokers' building, and sort out a new load to take.

Amex Global Marketplace

Anyways... the Ambassador Bridge can REALLY get backed up... wait times to get across that bridge can be as long as 6 hours during the summer (due to so many passenger vehicles) and even in winter, US-bound tractor-trailer trucks may be sitting in a line that stretches more than a mile into Windsor, and is a 2-3 hour wait.

The Ambassador Bridge is busiest land-crossing on the entire U.S. Canadian border. A significant portion of the commercial traffic crossing this bridge originates or is destined for Mexico.

This causes all sorts of traffic headaches for people who live and work in the vicinity of the Windsor-side approaches.

Everybody within probably 50 miles of this bridge has dreamed of a way to either make it faster for tourist/daytrip/daily commute crossings, especially on hot summer days, OR for commercial truckers to either proceed across the river or be able to drop swap loads in a timely manner. (trucks cannot enter and leave such international shipping zones without passing through the port of entry... so it's impossible to just drop or pick up a load without going through the ENTIRE process of attempting to cross).

So...in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, and in the interest of Canadian, and especially Ontario's commerce and tourism, and for the benefit of Ontario residents working in Michigan, Canadian businesses with employees who live in Michigan, and nearly everybody who lives in Windsor, the Province of Ontario started planning, and in 2004, voted to provide COMPLETE funding for the construction across the Detroit River, tentatively named the DRIC (Detroit River International Crossing), with substantially larger facilities for handling long-haul trucking, and the ends connecting directly to I-75 and I-96 on the US side to The King’s Highway (Route 401), and interstate quality highway on the Ontario side. As a bonus, the poverty stricken Delray neighborhood would see many homes condemned, and the owners get paid significantly above market value for their property, to go on their way and find much better homes to live in.

Blogger Dirk Manly January 09, 2019 10:45 PM

So, now, everybody’s a winner, right? Ontario wants it. Michigan wants it. The Teamsters Union wants it. “The Detroiter,” the nearest major full-service truck stop wants it. And most of all, the people who live in the neighborhood which will be destroyed to build the bridge want it. And you would think this would go off without a hitch.

Not so.

You see, the Ambassador Bridge is owned by the Maroun family, lead by, one might say, patriarch, one Manuel "Matty" Maroun.(*) The Maroun family doesn't own the bridge outright -- they bought it with a commercial mortgage, and owe over $1 BILLION on that mortgage. And the way that the DRIC project was presented would have put the Maroun family into bankruptcy in short order. Without the revenues from the truck traffic, they wouldn’t be able to make their mortgage payments, nor would they be able to sell it for anything close to what they paid for it.

So, they basically bought the Michigan legislature to obstruct this project for as long as possible, and the local news people ALL complained bitterly that Maroun family was behind ALL of the opposition to the project.

Now, it was IMMEDIATELY apparent to me that the ONLY reason the Maroun family objected, and were making political donations (and I’m sure, a hell of a lot of off-the-books money, etc.) was because they would go bankrupt in short order once the DRIC is completed.

Around this time, the I-75/I-96/Ambassador Bridge interchange was being completely rebuilt. A few months later, some idiots working for the Michigan Dept. of Transportation made a HUGE pile of dirt on the U.S. entrance to the Ambassador Bridge – for what reason has never been explained, but I’m sure it’s because the state workers were pissed at Maroun, as the newspaper, tv, and radio media sources ALL were painting the Marouns as a family of pure assholery incarnate. The Marouns sued the State of Michigan to remove the dirt, and for financial damages, but it took around half a year.

The Canadians then trotted out something new. The proposed that the bridge be named after the most widely recognized heroic figure in and around Detroit – Gordie Howe, a man who played professional hocky from the 1940’s all the way to the 1995, his last game at the age of 69, with the Detroit Vipers (IHL). Being Canadians, they thought, surely, naming the bridge after Detroit’s most famous hockey player will move this along! NOPE!

Eventually, It took 12 damned years for the people most closely involved with the plans of actually building the bridge to go to the Maroun family and ask what it would take for them to stop paying off every politician with a vote or even a voice on the matter to stop obstructing the project.

All the Marouns wanted was to be granted some way being able to avoid being driven into bankruptcy. So, it was agreed that Detroit International Bridge Company and the Canadian Transit Company (both owned by the Marouns) will be given the long-term contract for operating the Gordie Howe International Bridge, thereby allowing them to recover the revenue lost from the Ambassador Bridge due to the diversion of the high revenues obtained from truck traffic.

Now all that’s needed is to clear all the hurdles being put up by the EPA and other federal regulatory agencies (because, who knows, maybe the EPA’s anti-idlling regulation for truckers is wrong, and thousands of trucks just sitting around idling for hours, waiting in line, and so unable to turn off their engines actually benefits the environment. They don’t know. They’ve need more time to figure it out. And then there’s the squirrels and rats that live in the neighborhood of Delrey. What will happen to them? Again, the EPA still needs time to research this very important question. Maybe they’ll sponsor a lawyer create the Delray Rodents Association, and then speak on their behalf. Or Something.)

(*) I've met the guy, he's pretty down to earth. And comes to work every day dressed to do physical labor if needed, and drives an old, beat up pickup truck.

As long as the House Repubs are in the minority, that's safe and easy. They can loudly oppose the Dems, vote against the Dems, and know that their Leftist masters are still going to get everything they want.

When they are the minority controlled opposition, they are stalking horses for the Left. When they were in the majority, suddenly their positions mattered, and they to vote Left or see Right stuff pass - and their masters wouldn't like that.
