A legend has left us

I used to wear Karl Lagerfeld's signature cologne back in the day and it is still one of my favorites. The late fashion legend was also ruthlessly hysterical. Some of his classic quotes:
  • Kate Middleton has a nice silhouette and she is the right girl for that boy. I like that kind of woman, I like romantic beauties. On the other hand, her sister struggles. I don't like the sister's face. She should only show her back.
  • I hate ugly people. They are very depressing.
  • Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants.
  • We cannot talk about suffering. People buy dresses to be happy, not to hear about somebody who suffered over a piece of taffeta.
  • I have a sort of Alzheimer's for my own work, which I think is a very good thing. Today too many people remember what they did -- just forget it all and start again.
  • I am very much down to earth. Just not this earth.
  • Women can be short, but for men it is impossible. It is something that they will not forgive in life... they are mean and they want to kill you.
Owen Benjamin would approve.

F he was so hilarious. A big reader too.

>I had an interview once with some German journalist—some horrible, ugly woman. It was in the early days after the communists—maybe a week after—and she wore a yellow sweater that was kind of see-through. She had huge tits and a huge black bra, and she said to me, ‘It’s impolite; remove your glasses.’ I said, ‘Do I ask you to remove your bra?

When it is not hypocritical, the real deal here is that the rich think people like them will be in charge. Thus it is a power grab.

That quote about short men. Did KL know Scalzi?

Blogger Nate73 February 19, 2019 4:45 PM

Whenever I hear about a short person being behind a massive evil conspiracy I now know the reason. Can we have the altnostate (only tall people allowed)?

Better for a lot of women to wear sweatpants than stuff themselves into yoga pants. Sometimes you gotta admit defeat.

Lagerfeld was a talentless nothing with sole exception he chose good feline domestic partners. The cats ran Lagerfeld as a front and T. Gondii ran the cats. Apicomplexa are why Lagerfeld was somewhat quotable and Dieter on Sprockets says it's time to dance. That is all. Really I have to agree with a lot of the heightism stuff though. It's a trait unalterable once you're grown, unlike a lot of other metrics, so it would have a tendency to create "sore losers" who can never win.

That person just doesn't get Karl. I came here to appreciate fine craftsmanship in clothing and a man who clearly lived and breathed style. I certainly didn't come here for tonsures! I bet the attitude Karl had about life was more on topic than whatever that was.

I've successfully adapted Chanel hallmarks, like the chain-weighted jacket hem to my own jackets. No one sees the excellent work that goes into the reverse side of a piece, how button holes are hand-finished, how an Armani collar is literally quilted inside and rolled. Heck, even their rolled shoulders that make the garment just drape nicer. But boy do you ever see a difference when a person puts on a luxury garment.

>Never use the word “cheap”. Today everybody can look chic in inexpensive clothes (the rich buy them too). There is good clothing design on every level today. You can be the chicest thing in the world in a T-shirt and jeans — it’s up to you.

>but its more than that. He didnt' give a damn. he spoke the truth when the truth was no popular. To denigrate such a man is... repugnant.

Character vignettes like this are what convince me that men are best at reading the character of other men. I would never have thought such a simple trait would be such a part of his being, just his brand. It supercedes any punk aesthetic I know because it is not affectation.

This brings me to your point. It is repugnant to trash Karl or those like him. I think he might even be antithetical to Andy Warhol in is steadfast refusal to be a shallow person despite any and every opportunity. Imagine having all that temptation but not giving in. That's a bamf.

@sammibandit

When you mentioned Armani collars, were you talking about the interfacing, or something else? I've just been on a googling adventure, and discovered a whole new world of knowledge about tailoring...but nothing really helped me grasp what you meant by "quilted inside and rolled" so far. If it's too complicated or specialized to explain via text, I understand.
