An illegal slap on the wrist

A Florida judger refuses to let federal prosecutors avoid prosecuting a pedophile:
A U.S. District judge on Thursday ruled that federal prosecutors illegally signed a plea agreement with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and hid it from his more than two dozen underage victims.

“Epstein used paid employees to find and bring minor girls to him.,’’ wrote U.S. District Judge Kenneth A. Marra of Palm Beach County. “Epstein worked in concert with others to obtain minors not only for his own sexual gratification, but also for the sexual gratification of others.’’

Epstein, now 66, reached a nonprosecution deal in 2008 with then-Miami U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta’s office to secretly end a federal sex abuse investigation involving at least 40 teenage girls that could have landed him behind bars for life. He instead pleaded guilty to state charges, spent 13 months in jail, paid settlements to victims and is a registered sex offender.

Acosta, now President Donald Trump’s labor secretary, has defended the deal as appropriate but has not commented since the recent round of stories. He was asked about the case during his Senate confirmation hearings for the Cabinet post. “At the end of the day, based on the evidence, professionals within a prosecutor’s office decided that a plea that guarantees someone goes to jail, that guarantees he register generally and guarantees other outcomes, is a good thing,” he said.

Earlier February, the Justice Department opened an investigation into federal prosecutors’ handling of the plea deal.
The USA is increasingly a government of men, not laws. But not, it seems, entirely. At least, not yet. What Acosta did was wrong and he must have known it to be wrong, or he would not have hidden the deal from the victims.

Prosecutors regularly offer leniency to a defendant who offers testimony or evidence against his fellow offenders; I wonder how rare it is for a criminal to get a sweet deal in exchange for keeping his mouth shut?

If you have millions of carpenters you can build stuff yet when you have millions of lawyers somehow society becomes more lawless and the compounding injustice gets worse decade after decade. What do lawyers do again?

The most interesting thing will be what comes to light about Pedo Island and it's visitors (Bill, Hillary, many others, etc.) if Epstein is eventually prosecuted).

Doesn't double-jeopardy prevent proper sentence being meted out to Epstein now?
A shame there isn't a carve-out for prosecutorial corruption in the constitution.

Oh yeah that's right that's what lawyers do, they defend assholes like Epstein from double jeopardy while never blinking an eye about the abused at the bottom like those kids getting double, triple, etc.. jeopardy.

Right, upon re-reading it he pled to the state crimes but the federal were never prosecuted.

I question whether the investigations will be resumed and wrapped up at this point, given how many powerful people in DC stand to be exposed by it.

Blogger dc.sunsets February 22, 2019 12:02 PM

Vulnerable people are prey.
Powerful people are predators.

Our ancestors used to at least TRY to protect the innocent (esp. children too young to exercise self-protection from being manipulated by those far more powerful of mind and of a predatory personality), passing laws that defined such predation and attaching punishments meant to discourage it.

Now, the only thing left to discourage such behavior is a man willing to shoot those who'd target his children. This means that fatherless kids (esp. those in 'state custody') are as young gazelles on the African Plains, living under the gaze of those who will consume them as a matter of course.

I truly pity those in the foster system or the children of "single" mothers. Ironic, is it not, that as our society became more matriarchal it is the children who suffer most. I suppose this parallels data showing that if a child is murdered by a parent, most often it's the mother.

Epstein is quite the polymath. From Wikipedia - "Jeffrey Edward Epstein is an American financier, science and research philanthropist, and registered sex offender."

Weiner's laptop.
Hefner's video recordings (from his "mansion.")
Epstein's videos (the Mother of All such lodes.)

Someone has them. ALL of them. This we know for certain. What we don't and may never know is who battles whom over the consequences of this. It's a conspiracy FACT that such battles exist.

What would cause the USA's populace to go more insane, incontrovertible video evidence of Bill and Hillary (separately) sexually abusing 14 year old prostitutes or of actual extraterrestrials landing on Earth?

The immediate question on my mind is:

What impact will this have on Acosta?

It just seems like the judge is "in" on this, compounding a wrist-slap pedo sentence with a wrist-slap judgment of impropriety long after-the fact..

Then the clintonistas who still infest the DOJ declare they're "resuming" the investigation, but it just ends up in someone's desk drawer, sort of like the pedo in SDNY who has democrat connections so he's out on bond and his arraignment hearing keeps getting "re-scheduled" for years.

The gas-lighting is happening openly on public record and it's as if people are blind.

Since they're already quite insane by any historical measure (I think we've even surpassed the famous Tulipmania by now), one must ask if becoming more insane is even possible at this stage. Funny how Trump keeps hiring these SES (Soros Empoyment Service) types for high positions in his administration. Barr is no better than Acosta - though nothing (so far) has surfaced about setting pedos loose to prey upon the populace - just cold-blooded murderers who wear badges.

Blogger Doktor Jeep February 22, 2019 12:56 PM

Anything even a little better than a corrupt fallen state such as ours would have made Acosta just as complicit with any molestation committed after the deal.

Blogger ThatWouldBeTelling February 22, 2019 1:22 PM

"What Acosta did was wrong and he must have known it to be wrong, or he would not have hidden the deal from the victims."

There was a legal reason that led to this ruling. If the deal had been made public, the Crime Victims' Rights Act gives the victims the right to both confer with the prosecution and to make their objections to the plea deal heard in court.

Blogger Gianna February 22, 2019 1:27 PM

IIRC, Epstein didn't spend 13 months in jail. It was house arrest with the condition that he could leave to go to his office from 9-5.

What is Trump's historical connection & social interaction with Jeffrey Epstein? Did he ever visit his island or ride on his now-famous plane?

"What is Trump's historical connection & social interaction with Jeffrey Epstein? Did he ever visit his island or ride on his now-famous plane?"

He visited once and never again after that. It's been speculated the reason he fights so hard is he knows the exactly what the evil that exists is and he's seen it. Unlike Bill Clinton and Kevin Spacey he did not have repeat visits on Epstein's Lolita's Express.

How that name alone isn't damning evidence is proof of how far we've fallen.

What Acosta did was wrong and he must have known it to be wrong, or he would not have hidden the deal from the victims.

And now the $64,000,000 question: will he be punished for that wrongdoing?

Yes, I know, I know; I am asking for too and we should be grateful just for the miracle described here. Still, we can always dream of full justice making a comeback, can't we?

Another "Why the hell did Trump pick this guy?" moment.

That is a very interesting question, if you use your imagination a little. Hard-left conspiracy theorists like to think it was a payoff to keep him quiet about the close friendship they're convinced Trump had with Epstein. But there are better ways to buy a man's silence than to appoint him to a prominent job that guarantees people will ask about your personal connections to him. The only reason Democrats haven't bashed him for it since day one is that they know any light shined on Epstein shines on the Clintons. So maybe there's another reason for hiring him.

Blogger Haxo Angmark February 22, 2019 2:52 PM

A sweet deal in federal criminal court? extremely rare.

Sentencing in federal court is dictated by the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, a dictionary sized book that contains formula for determining an appropriate sentencing range based on various aggravating and mitigating factors, such as criminal history, use of weapons or force, amount and types of drugs involved, cooperation with LEO investigations, etc. All the factors are plugged into the formula and you get a sentencing range. The judge must impose a sentence within that range (and within the statutory min/max of the underlying charges); going above or below that recommended range requires some specific findings of fact and law by the court, and its very susceptible to being overturned on appeal.

I say all that because the recommended sentencing range for what Epstein was charged with would be 360 months to life.

The only way Epstein was able to avoid serving multiple decades in federal prison was for it to be non-prosecuted. Any plea deal that they could have possibly worked up wouldn't have avoided the sentencing guidelines and the imposition of a massive sentence.

Point being, Epstein got treatment that I've never even heard of occurring in fed court, even for misdemeanors. No way is a charge like that getting non-prossed in fed court; that just never happens.

Why did Trump appoint the corrupt Acosta?

Blogger Ariadne Umbrella February 22, 2019 3:53 PM

the world-wide traffickers that seem to be Qed up all prefer young people who don't speak the local language. The preferred shopping spots are the impoverished former Hapsburg regions, or along in that area: Slovenia, Czech regions, Albania, Macedonia.

High end Ivy students learn French, German, Russian and Japanese. Trump married a Czech and a Slovene, but never seems to mention if he ever talks to his wives.

There's a fairly decent chance he talked to the lollies on the island in their own language, and heard their stories, unlike any of the other visitors.

He was enjoying being a fantastically wealthy man at the peak of his earnings power, surrounded by his family, all of whom were also doing quite well as private citizens. Something had to induce him to risk not just his own life, but the lives of everyone around him. I don't think abstractions moved him.

His foreign wives fanatically support him in his presidency. His American wife remains at a distance. Why would they be so fervent in support of American ambition? They were both models who came up from the poorer, seedier side of modelling. Melania bought back even her better nudes, that pols try to shame her with. That, to me, says that they all know more about the seedier side of everything, themselves, personally, than what makes it out to blue jacket political life.

The Q stuff always emphasizes the international rescue element. What I'm guessing is that the Trumps have pledged their fortunes and lives to rescue not just Americans, but their various mother's peoples. Which is just so unbelievably heroic it makes me tear up just thinking about it.

Why did Trump appoint the corrupt Acosta?

For the same reason he backpedaled on pulling out of Syria and building the Wall, and why he has appointed to key positions natives of the very swamp he claims to want to drain. The Deep State made him do it.

Unlike his predecessors who were 100 percent marionettes of the Deep State, Trump is too powerful and self-sustaining to completely control. However, the DS has limits to what it will tolerate in terms of deviating from its agenda or threats to its interests. At some point Trump was told, in so many words, but in unmistakable terms: "there are certain things that you WILL do that we tell you to do and certain lines that you will NOT cross. Otherwise be prepared for you and your family to be Wellstoned or for you to be Kennedied."

Trump may have billions and a crack private personal security team, but the DS has trillions, along with entire armies and lethal technology at its disposal that the GE can't begin to comprehend.
