Another curve ball

This is hardly the first time one of our projects has taken an unanticipated curve, but even so, I'm sorry to have to inform everyone that SocialGalactic 1.0 has gone down for the count. By which I mean that we are permanently pulling the plug on this particular form of it. I'll explain more in my Devstream tomorrow, but the long and the short of it is that the Infogalactic team has unanimously decided that our best course of action was to shut it down and return to our original Plan A of developing our own social media technology on our own servers.

While we appreciated the short cut that the possibility of working with Fediway offered us, after further discussions with them, we have mutually concluded that it is best for both organizations to go their separate ways.

Developing the necessary social media technology will, of course, take time, though probably not as much as you might imagine, so we will gladly refund everyone who supported the Burn Unit with the expectation of having Bronze, Silver, or Gold access to SocialGalactic. Please just email me with the relevant email address and I'll take care of it. Speaking for the team, I sincerely apologize to all 2,500 of our users for the inconvenience involved, and we all very much appreciate the strong interest that the Infogalactic community has indicated in its own social media site.

That being said, we will NOT be doing any crowdfunding for SocialGalactic 2.0 for reasons that will be very obvious in 4-6 weeks.

Well, I enjoyed my brief foray into social media anyway.

Blogger Chad Thundercockovich February 10, 2019 9:30 PM

It was very good, very fast. I am happy to take your advice and be stoic and take the long view.

Good luck!

Blogger Houston February 10, 2019 9:30 PM

It was fun while it lasted. Looking forward to the next effort.

Blogger Unknown February 10, 2019 9:31 PM

Did Fediway pull some crap? Hope not. I donated to them, on the strength of their association with SG. Sucks.

Looking forward to the new one though.

Blogger Stickwick Stapers February 10, 2019 9:31 PM

I have no intention of withdrawing my Burn Unit support. In this for the long haul, and looking forward to SG 2.0.

Blogger Markku February 10, 2019 9:33 PM

This was for the best for Infogalactic, trust me.

Blogger Chiva February 10, 2019 9:40 PM

Enjoyed trying SocialGalatic. Thank you to all who worked on it.

Blogger Doktor Jeep February 10, 2019 9:41 PM

Well at least there's an opportunity to develop something better.

Blogger Unknown February 10, 2019 9:43 PM

SocialGalactic, we hardly knew ye.

Blogger Ahnaf Ibn Qais February 10, 2019 9:43 PM

Thank you for the Well-mannered and Civil Platform (a la "Clean Speech) !

I wish you (and the rest of the Team) the Best of Luck in your Future Endeavours!

Inshallah, You guys will come out with a much better framework (a la Social Galactic 2.0) in the Near Future! :)

Of this, I have no doubt. I loved the few conversations I had on the site so far, but I was fighting the site the whole time to do what I wanted. It would have been a very frustrating experience to use on a daily basis.

I can't overstate how great I found the conversations on SocialGalactic to be so far. The community both here and there are fantastic and I can't wait for version 2.0.

Blogger weka February 10, 2019 9:45 PM

I liked it. Understand that getting it righr takes time. Look forward next version

Blogger SDH February 10, 2019 9:46 PM

I just created my account...

Blogger Living in a Fallen World February 10, 2019 9:48 PM

@13 "I just created my account..."

So it's your fault!

lol, oh well, good times while it lasted. Looking forward to the next incarnation. Out.

Blogger John February 10, 2019 9:50 PM

Easy come easy go. Double down on the Burn Unit!

Blogger Silent Draco February 10, 2019 9:53 PM

This was a useful experiment, curveballs notwithstanding. Thanks for a great experince.

Blogger Dave February 10, 2019 9:55 PM

It's all good. I've been in the Burn Unit from the start and like Stickwick, I'm not going anywhere.

Blogger tz February 10, 2019 9:57 PM

Build your own platforms.
Don't outsource, even to Fedi.
Looking forward (really, it should be far better!) to SG 2.0 or whatever it is.

Blogger jaericho February 10, 2019 10:07 PM

I'm sticking with the Burn Unit as well.

Blogger Z MAlfoy February 10, 2019 10:08 PM

I've been Burn Unit for a while, have no intent of changing that. I enjoyed the few conversations I had, and look forward to 2.o with great anticipation!

Blogger Rantor February 10, 2019 10:09 PM

No problem... looking forward to version 2!

Blogger Johnny February 10, 2019 10:10 PM

People who are theoreticians often don't get how tough it is to actually get things done in the real world. Best of luck with your project.

Blogger Door in the Hill February 10, 2019 10:12 PM

Sorry to hear it's going down. I was enjoying it so far, and getting ready to buy a bigger account once the opportunity opened up again.

Hope it's at least been a good experience in terms of learning what you need and don't need for features in the proper replacement.

Farewell to SG v1... no sooner than I absolutely must.

Blogger pdwalker February 10, 2019 10:17 PM

Looking forward to hearing what happened.

Blogger thalios February 10, 2019 10:20 PM

Keep my Burn Unit Gold money. In for the haul... long or otherwise. Dying to know what happened though. #TheCoreV2

Blogger Zaklog the Great February 10, 2019 10:26 PM

I have heard some very smart, very effective people offer the advice to fail fast and fail often. It doesn’t get much faster than this. We’ll see what comes next.

I hope I’m as early on board next time. It was kind of cool to be one of the first 10.

Blogger Goes211 February 10, 2019 10:30 PM

Why does is still appear to be up?

Blogger Markku February 10, 2019 10:31 PM

We have put in the request to take it down. We don't have control of the server.

Blogger ÆtherCzar February 10, 2019 10:32 PM

Keep the donation, and put it to good use in Social Galactic 2.0. The ride never ends!

Blogger Lightning in My Hands February 10, 2019 10:33 PM

Say it ain't so. I was looking forward to the next step in the university classroom.

As far as building your own platform goes, are you accepting software engineers?

Blogger FUBARwest February 10, 2019 10:33 PM

Sorry to hear it went down. Looking forward to SG 2.0 and to hear what happened tomorrow.

Blogger 1337kestrel February 10, 2019 10:33 PM

I don't know much about FEDiway technology, but I have long been an advocate for an open microblogging protocol that allows multiple independently administered servers.

Blogger M. Bibliophile February 10, 2019 10:37 PM

Ah, well. I'll be back for the next incarnation as well, and I'll kick some money towards the Burn Unit as soon as my financial situation settles down. It was fun, looking forward to the next go around.

Blogger S. Thermite February 10, 2019 10:38 PM

Oh well...a minor disappointment but I trust the plan and the planners. Unlike Gab, which I recall having a waiting list for sign-up and definitely wasn’t with it.

Blogger S. Thermite February 10, 2019 10:39 PM

*definitely wasn’t worth it.

Blogger Lushtree February 10, 2019 10:45 PM

@birchtree here. I never got into Twitter or Gab as I never liked social media, but Social Galactic was a blast while it lasted and changed my mind. Strange for something I only enjoyed for such a short time, but I will miss it. Looking forward to 2.0!

Blogger lowercaseb February 10, 2019 10:46 PM

It was a successful test! It proved that there was demand and that the #cleanspeech policy works. Plus, Jesus like my post and became my friend. I honestly can't ask for more!

Blogger Jack Ward February 10, 2019 10:49 PM

Trust and stand with the PLAN. Know now why wasn't able to get on there. Everything Vox and friends can do to be completely autonomous is for the better. Did not Nazim, something or other, talk about being anti-fragile? Do believe I read his book, or something. Smart man.

Blogger Taqiyyotomist February 10, 2019 10:52 PM

Looking forward to hearing the whole story, and seeing what comes next.

Blogger CostelloM February 10, 2019 11:04 PM

Let me guess - Fedi wanted a "code of conduct" or such correct?

Blogger Archella February 10, 2019 11:13 PM

I feel sad, but also victorious. This was awesome, period. Also, Vox, I want to thank you personally for introducing me(us) to Owen Benjamin's work, what a priceless gift he is, I haven't laughed this hard, and this many times, for a while. I will be there for the next iteration. Godspeed my friends. As others have noted in the past, far from making me want a refund, makes me want to up to gold. because. *&$% them.

Blogger Mary MacArthur February 10, 2019 11:20 PM

Much of the #lastpost tag is about Our Lord.
Grateful to have been there.

Blogger SciVo February 10, 2019 11:24 PM

Thank you for the beta test. It was fun. If you're taking suggestions for the next one, I would like an easy way to follow multi-paticipant conversations over an indefinite period (possibly the lifetime of the tech). Especially since there were so many people with interesting things to say. Positive experience overall, looking forward to the next version!

Blogger Ominous Cowherd February 10, 2019 11:28 PM

I had credit card issues, and fell out of the burn unit. I went there to renew my support, and I can't find any way to donate. Can someone point me to the burn unit, please?

Blogger Faison February 10, 2019 11:29 PM

Thank you for the open beta! The community experience was great and I look forward to the next (and I assume more robust) version. I took a screenshot of who I'm following now so I can reconnect next time. Godspeed and God bless.

Blogger IncoherentM February 10, 2019 11:36 PM

Thanks to all those working hard on this project. I'll sign up for 2.0 as soon as it's available.

Blogger Wolfman February 10, 2019 11:38 PM

"took a screenshot of who I'm following"

Damn good idea.

Blogger Crave February 10, 2019 11:43 PM

Looking forward to the next iteration.

Blogger Starboard February 10, 2019 11:45 PM

It was fun while it lasted. No refund necessary. Will my socialgalactic subscription turn into an ongoing infogalactic burn unit donation, or are you turning off the monthly credit card charge?

Blogger Coyotewise February 10, 2019 11:55 PM

It's like watching Belichick cut Randy Moss or Josh Gordon. Seems sudden, but will make sense soon, I'm sure.

Blogger D.J. Schreffler February 10, 2019 11:59 PM

I'd been looking for an opportunity to join the Burn Unit. SocialGalactic is just gravy.

Blogger Kat February 11, 2019 12:00 AM

Blogger #7139 February 11, 2019 1:30 AM

Nazim asks you how often you get to the Cloud District. Oh, what am I saying.

Blogger James Pyrich February 11, 2019 2:00 AM

I'm sticking with the Burn Unit as well. The social media buff was a nice perk but I'm just happy to be here.

Blogger Akuma February 11, 2019 2:12 AM

This was a blast. I going to donate to the burn unit when my tax refund hit my bank account sometime this week. Looking forward to the future projects. Is there anywhere I can still donate or join the burn unit or is it closed now?

Blogger Freddy Sea February 11, 2019 2:22 AM

I can only echo what everyone else already said
- was my first toe dip into social I have twitter and gab accounts somewhere..., unused.
- SG very enjoyable. Much good interactions.
- the UI was crazy. Beta, just about usable, but : Reload reload reload.
- EU was disappointing. I was about to digging out my VPN password for non-EU geolocators. Ah well then the shutters came down entirely.
- will join 2.0 as soon as it's up.
- Will get some sort of subscription once it's out of beta.
Fingers crossed for your reinvigorated endeavours!

Blogger T-Square Bear February 11, 2019 4:05 AM

Really enjoyed SG, never been a social media user before as idiots screaming in the wind for attention didn't seem a good way to spend time. This was different and the emphasis on politeness was a winner. Looking forward to whatever comes next!

Blogger E. Darwin Hartshorn February 11, 2019 4:16 AM

Have you been into #TheCore;
Have you seen her gilded hall?
No. No one has. For naught is left
But standing stones of form bereft.
All cities but the last will fall.

Blogger Mark Stoval February 11, 2019 4:22 AM

Vox, I have to say that your honesty and timely information is a large credit to you and any organization of yours. I think many a CEO could learn a valuable lesson from your frankness about your business affairs.

The "well this did not work out" admission ups your value in my book by a lot. (if that were possible that is)

Good on you.

Blogger James Dixon February 11, 2019 4:38 AM

Not a problem. I'm sure you'll have your own platform soon enough, and if not, Gab is at least usable for now.

Anonymous Anonymous February 11, 2019 4:46 AM

Just a bump in the road. No worries. It was worth waiting for, and so will whatever replaces it down the road.

Blogger michimartini February 11, 2019 5:08 AM

I am actually relieved that you guys made this choice. I felt a bit uneasy with the dependency on this fedi organization.

Blogger Gregory the Tall February 11, 2019 5:32 AM

Blogger VD February 11, 2019 5:34 AM

Blogger Avalanche February 11, 2019 7:40 AM

Never really a social media user; joined SG in support; will be back of course for SG2. But, I do love being able to support your/our/Vox's Unapproved Right projects -- it's a thing!

Blogger Tank February 11, 2019 7:58 AM

FYI, SG loaded (although in an odd way) on my Ipad, but did not load up onto my PC at all. Contrary to others, I did not like the look of it, nor do I think the name is very good (Twitter is a good name, Gab is a good name, SG not a good name..all MHO of course). The concept I liked and will try again.

Blogger Salt February 11, 2019 8:01 AM

No worries, Vox. SG was a side show to the IG initiative.

I was thinking of joining but then I saw the Fediway affiliation. I have no idea who they are and what kind of garbage they might suddenly pull, so I decided to wait.

Seriously, all it takes nowadays if you said something untoward anything non-White and they go apoplectic, usually ending every sentence with the phrase, "you Nazi!"

Blogger Aziz P. February 11, 2019 11:49 AM

Vox, I also registered as a user, because #cleanspeech is something that has appeal across political and other philosophical battle lines. It takes some effort to maintain it on twitter and facebook, but it can be done, just like any garden needs pruning. As a philosophy, however, having it built into a social media platform as a core principle is exciting and I hope, an idea that will spread. Looking forward to SG2. Thank you for making this effort.

Blogger Doktor Jeep February 11, 2019 12:57 PM

I can see three delineations here.
People fighting the SJWs
People who are for the most part squishy on the inside and incapable of caring about anything beyond themselves.

As much as we can expect SJWs to lie, double down, and project, we need to also expect the squishy people who are not in the fight against them to cuck every.damned.time. As described in SJWAL, they have no knowledge of SJWs and their tactics so even a small effort by one rage mob looks like the German Blitzkrieg to them. They don't even realize that the people threatening them are not even customers and never will be.

Blogger Franz Lyonheart February 11, 2019 1:39 PM

Ah, in my rushed list I forgot one item of course :

“And because there was need of more pay for the shouters and marchers,
They disbanded in face of their foemen their yeomen and archers.”

*Sigh* Kipling warned us about all of this over 100 years ago. Will we ever learn?

Blogger Steb February 11, 2019 2:36 PM

Congratulations on the quick decision. Shortcuts always take longer in the end.

Blogger Lance E February 11, 2019 2:39 PM

Was fun while it lasted. One thing I definitely appreciate is the emphasis on quality over quantity.

Personally, I'm betting on the issues being at least partly technical. Fediway has always seemed a little sketchy to me in that area. See their hubs "page" for example...

Blogger Bibliotheca Servare February 11, 2019 4:58 PM

Well it was a short but fun experience. And I joined a "Vox Day discord" channel through Socialgalactic, so now I have a discord account! Looking forward to Socialgalactic 2.0, for sure.
