Mailvox: got a question for Jordan Peterson?

An Australian reader informs us that you can submit questions for Jordan Peterson to answer during his upcoming appearance on QANDA, an Australian panel show where audience members can ask questions via a video upload.
Ask a Question

Do you have a question for the Q&A panel?

Q&A is our national conversation. We want questions from every corner of Australia.

Send us the text of your question on this web form or by using your ABC account.

Include your contact details and if we shortlist your question, we’ll get in touch to show you how to ask your question by Skype, video or web.
Have fun, if you are so inclined. In the meantime, the New Zealand media is deciding that Jordan Peterson is more tedious than a threat of any kind:
On Wednesday, the crowd can hardly contain their excitement. As we wait for Peterson, someone brings a couple of water bottles on the stage and applause breaks out. When Peterson enters, people stand up and roar with delight. He sits down, opens his laptop and starts talking.

Soon, tired self-help advice comes: "Look for beauty during dark times"; "Wake up at the same time every day". Peterson says if you want to achieve anything in life, you need to make sacrifices. When he was a PHd student and trying to write a book, he used to party and drink a lot. He realised that in order to achieve his goals, he had to sacrifice his drinking. Wow, what triumph of the will. What a brave tale of conquest against all odds.

After about half an hour, he finally says something I don't know. When we dream, our body is paralysed so we don't act out our dreams and only our eyes are moving. Sometimes we don't quite wake up and we can't move and that's when people hear voices and see aliens. Well, I have experienced this half-awake state without realising it was perfectly normal to be paralysed for a few seconds, and it was terrifying. I feel a bit like that now - the room is hot, the guy next to me is manspreading and I am in the middle of the row so I can't move. I feel trapped in Peterson's interminable stream of consciousness. My chaotic brain is lost and wishing for some male order. I keep yawning uncontrollably. The thought of getting an ice cream after the show keeps me awake.

I was expecting sensational insights, or at least controversial thoughts, but most of what we are getting is self-help gibberish. Maybe Peterson is not so such a threat to humankind after all.

It's funny to watch the occasional honest admission slip through, even if she thinks she intended it as sarcasm, amidst all the narrative spew.

But women, even feminists, can be very honest if you don't take them too literally. This one's screaming something that all men need to hear: Peterson is omega, he's turning other guys into omegas, and to a woman that's just about the worst and most unforgivable sin there is.

You are from Canada, where you successfully broke the Quebec identity as a nation, such that the separation referendum of 1995 failed. What lessons can you give from your success there, to erase the national identity of other peoples?

Blogger "William Berke" February 23, 2019 12:51 PM

To be frank that’s a good question.

Will your estate release a posthumous autobiography like that of Jung? Do you have any advisors holding you back physically and spiritually at this time? Did you have a loving father like Jung did? If not, do you consider yourself capable of regret in choosing wrong role models? If yes, what would your father say about choosing the wrong role models?

Blogger sammibandit February 23, 2019 12:57 PM

Haha, spinoza was that a pun? It is a good question, I agree. You don't have to believe Quebec is broken to answer and I'd like to see how JBP cope with that.

Maybe I'm reading too much into what is not said because QC is having big problems with loser migrant invaders coming right in, shepherded by cab drivers and RCMP.

Blogger Balkan Yankee February 23, 2019 1:16 PM

@12: Excellent question. FWIW: And having erased national identities, how do you propose to manage the risk that any society thusly atomized might fall victim to a mass movement that is perhaps even nastier?

Looks like Peterson had better up his game in terms of being controversial, otherwise those juicy Patreon dollars will disappear. The left is now trying to actively ignore him.

There's some truth in the article, though. First, his advice is pretty lukewarm. Second, the whole occult/esoteric thing is now mainstream. If you went back 100 years ago, people like Anton Levy and his Church of Satan would have been considered radical and dangerous. Nowadays, it is ho-hum. Hollywood, the music industry, the new age movement, humanism... all of these groups are pushing this kind of esoteric philosophy that is not far removed from what Peterson is selling. Advocating nationalism is now an extreme position, not atheism and the like.

If you take away Peterson's occasional criticisms of the radical left, he's actually not controversial at all.

Blogger sammibandit February 23, 2019 2:04 PM

That's a pattern worth repeating. I had halal pizza at work yesterday because of payday and they guys wanting to try it. I was not impressed by the canned sauce and under-oiled crust. I know it sounds terribly bourgeois, but I have also seen downtown muslimified. I've spent many, many cumulative years at school or working downtown and I don't recognize it as a Prairie City anymore.

It's quite bizarre. The women are timid and the men are either saccarinely sweet or circumspect at best. Even recent fullblooded European transplants, like Manchesterites, Swedes, South Frenchmen, Koreans here for decades, and Chinese students here for 4 or 5 years fit in better than than them.

Sadly, most of the questions will be replied in his now very tired formula "It depends what you mean by X"

Nate73 wrote:@4: I thought women were disgusted by gammas and omegas were invisible.

Omegas are invisible until they aren't. They're not supposed to get invited to the parties. Peterson is out there making big parties just for the omegas. Mostly, women don't go to them, but when they do, such as for "journalistic" reasons, this is the outcome.

I guess one could argue that Peterson himself is more of a gamma, and probably some of his audience is too. But look at his overall audience, or look at Vox's old threads where he posted comments/reviews by Peterson fans. Or listen to the actual content of one of his lectures. It gets spun as promoting masculinity and misogyny, but it is actually the most emasculating crap imaginable. What kind of loser needs to be told to clean his room and take his pills?

Whatever you want to call it, it's very low-status, and women sniff that out instinctively. You see considerably less contempt directed toward actual misogynists like BAP.

Blogger cecilhenry February 23, 2019 2:52 PM

Interesting comments from my nephews after watching a recent Peterson video.

They watched the 4 minute video and said, unprompted, and laughingly,

'I have no idea what Peterson just said. It sounded good, but didn't mean much'

One then observed that Peterson is 'always' talking with that Rubin and Ben Shapiro guy.

They shrugged and changed the subject. They watched the 'Jordan Peterson Dismantled' video with considerable interest.

Blogger NP_see February 23, 2019 3:55 PM

@28 Well, they haven't fully translated all of 200 years together so I can't read or comment on what has already been translated. That's a hell of a question Artensol. I have to think about that one. I mean jezz these questions are really something. I mean, like wow, how do you even answer something like that? My face? That's easy. Way too much apple cider.
Probably would go something like that

@29 A copy of the book was given to him by a Jewish gentleman in the audience at a talk JBP gave in New York. JBP said he hadn't read it yet.

The audience member then asked the two JQ questions. At which point he clutched his head as if in painful contemplation before saying "I can't do it".

@25: BAP?

One of the thing that initially put me off about peterson was his seeming pro-masculinity stance like talking about monogamy and divorce courts and marriage, but then calling mgtows pathetic weasels and then giving a fake apology about it. I suspect the 'red-pill' stuff he talks about is stuff he just picked up reading reddit or 4chan and sprinkles them in to attract disaffected men without ever actually offering real ideas. It's more like "this is how we have to save feminism" than anything that will help men and women.

Blogger Living in a Fallen World February 23, 2019 6:24 PM

In the last few years, you've found abundant success, both in terms of name recognition and financial compensation. As such, do you now feel more or less free to speak your mind candidly than you did two to four years ago?

Instead of searching for a better life somewhere else, wouldn't it be better for illegal immigrants to stay home and clean their own rooms? In other words, instead of running away to a land of opportunity, why not create a land of opportunity where you already live?

Bronze Age Pervert.

I suspect the 'red-pill' stuff he talks about is stuff he just picked up reading reddit or 4chan and sprinkles them in to attract disaffected men without ever actually offering real ideas.

I'm sure that his lobster-cult stuff was his own. Like so many of what Zman calls "edgytarians", he's willing to graze the edge of a taboo topic like socio-sexual hierarchy by discussing it at an absurdly abstract level, but is completely unwilling to deal with any of its real-life consequences.

JBP's often incomprehensible and contradictory positions on masculinity can mostly be summed up as: sexual selection made men more aggressive and competitive, which makes some of them more successful, but female hypergamy either doesn't exist or doesn't matter and women are still essentially incapable of evil.

He can insult MRAs/MGTOWs all he wants, but his ideology is almost indistinguishable from theirs. His schtick is to concede every moral claim made by feminists, but dispute some of the factual ones and beg for sympathy.

I followed the link to the Cecile Meier article. Interestingly, the second comment repeatedly refers to Peterson as "Henderson". He's apparently that forgettable.

Blogger Tatooine Sharpshooters' Club February 24, 2019 1:46 AM

@4 - Ms. (((Meier))) looks to be a bundle of fun herself, and though indeed she does protest he's merely tedious, she is still enough the quivering SJW to fear "his Handmaid's Tale-style ideas". Seriously, feminists, read another book! No, not Harry Potter!

Blogger Jack Morrow February 24, 2019 1:02 PM

To what extent do you take your inspiration from Chauncey Gardner? (The character played by Peter Sellers in Being There--a simple-minded gardener who loses his job and then accidentally ends up in a position where his banal comments such as "China--full of Chinese" are accepted as great wisdom).

How many, if any, of your colleagues from The Gateway in the early 1980s would be stunned to see the newspaper's "typesetter extraordinaire" becoming famous?
