16 felonies

It should be interesting to see the inevitable outrage from the Hollywood crowd:
A Cook County grand jury has returned a 16-count indictment against "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett, according to court records. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office confirmed the indictment, which they said was returned by a grand jury on Thursday.
It doesn't look like this one is being swept under the rug.

This will be entertaining to watch.

If what Chicago friends tell me is accurate, Mr. Smollet probably will enjoy F-row in Cook County Jail.

Blogger Crew March 08, 2019 9:32 PM

Hmmm, I had assumed he would not see a day in jail or a need to avoid bending over to pickup the soap.

I find it fascinating just how many Hollywood celeb and media types don't see how dangerous and hate stoking what Smollett did was. Their Hollywood bubble really shields them from any reality.

Blogger DraveckysHumerus March 08, 2019 10:32 PM

IL AG folks tell me Jussie goin' jail. No deal. The Feds look to "bring it" on the postal fraud and related offenses in connection with the letter if IL fails to press for prison time. Chicago wants to show it's in control. First offender, time actually served will likely be a year plus three months if Jussie pleads without a trial, otherwise up to three years. 0.02

Blogger Rex Little March 08, 2019 10:42 PM

OK, how does one false police report draw a 16-count indictment? And those have to be 16 fairly serious charges--they don't convene a grand jury to hand out jaywalking tickets.

It wasn't just one false report, he made multiple false reports at different times. Looking at the indictment, it also looks like some of the false reports violated multiple laws.

Police usually aren't fooled by these hoaxes. Jussie made the mistake of actually involving the police in his little charade, rather than just shilling it to the media. In fact, he did one worse, filed a false report and then started the media circus, forcing the police to deal with the media circus as well. I'd be pissed off too.

The actual sentencing outcome will tell us a lot about whether the establishment itself is throwing him under the bus, or if it's just an internal spat between agitators and police.

Blogger tublecane March 08, 2019 11:25 PM

@19- Apparently they indicted Juicy for every lie he told in two police conversations. The greatest hits would be:

1. Racial/sexual comments
2. The noose
3. The bleach
4. Battery
5. Kicking him while he was down
6. At least one of them being white

I have no idea whether breaking it down lie by lie is normal. Sometimes the authorities enjoy deluging defendants in a sea of charges.

Blogger DraveckysHumerus March 08, 2019 11:26 PM

@19

OK, how does one false police report draw a 16-count indictment?

Smollett allegedly communicated the faux attack sixteen discrete instances to a first responder/LEO. Each detective who investigated is an instance multiplied by each event Smollett knowingly contributed fake evidence to that detective. For example, Smollett turned over redacted cell phone logs and, separately, a team pursued complete phone records from the carrier directly. The records obtained from the carrier didn't register a count but the redacted logs handed over by Smollett were a representation attempting to support the false claims and thus did register a separate count by each LEO who reviewed the logs against Smollett's other evidence.

Blogger Doktor Jeep March 08, 2019 11:27 PM

If there had been a couple of white guys nearby, for any reason even though unlikely in that environment, and they were charged with the crime instead, this Smollet creature would have had no problem with 2 innocent people being railroaded off to prison.

That's how sick these people are. This crap ends in gulags. And then after they have killed off their "enemy", they start on each other.

Blogger tublecane March 08, 2019 11:29 PM

Also, disorderly conduct for filing a false report in this case is more than just filing a false report, you know. It's causing a media storm and wasting the city's resources on a massive scale. Let's invent a new crime called Hate Hoax Mayhem.

Blogger DraveckysHumerus March 08, 2019 11:37 PM

The IL disorderly conduct statute mandates a convict must reimburse affected parties, including the government, for economic damages. Jussie a'goin' to prison _and_ da poorhouse once this thing resolves.

@19 "how does one false police report draw a 16-count indictment"

Maybe they do it by the (wasted) COST in time and manpower they wasted on the false report?

However, police sources tell CBS 2 the resources expended were significant. Twenty-four detectives were removed from regular cases, expending up to 1,000 hours, overtime not included. Police outlined the extraordinary detail of their investigation.

"We interviewed over 100 individuals in a canvass of the area and a followup canvass as our investigation expanded," said Commander Edward Wodnicki from the Area Central Detective Unit.

In addition, police spent dozens of hours of examining surveillance video from 55 city pod cams and private cameras. And working with federal authorities, they executed 50 search warrants and subpoenas for phone, social media and financial records.

The Fraternal Order of Police is hoping Smollett is ordered to pay back the cost.

I can't believe Libs swallowed Jussie's obvious lie.

Their brains never reached the point of considering whether it was true. Gay black celeb accuses scary OrangeManBad supporters. The who/whom was simple, no need to think further. You could show them a video of him giving George Soros a reacharound while they planned it together, and libs would still say it was important to believe Jussie because of all the other gays/blacks being attacked in Trump's Amurika every day. Same thing they said about Blasey-Ford.

I have my doubts this will go to trial.

A month ago, we all had doubts it would get near this point. He may get a plea deal, but we're still talking about him only because he's being made an example of. Something is different with this one. He pissed someone off.

Who did he piss off?

I'm guessing Rahm Emanuel. Look at the tone of this statement -- from back on Jan. 31, when just about every other Dem politician was enthusiastically promoting the hoax crime:

Rahm Emanuel Weighs in On Alleged Jussie Smollett Attack

Obviously the alleged statement of what happened here is horrific and there’s no place for it in the city of Chicago,” Emanuel said during a Wednesday evening press briefing about the extreme weather currently affecting the city. “I know the police department is working aggressively to [get] to the bottom of what happened."

But yeah, it's clear that he didn't get the proper authorization from someone for this scam.

And this is just the Cook County charges. That fake threat letter that he mailed to himself -- didn't it have some kind of white powder in it? That's multiple federal crimes...

@46 Snideley, Well, it started off well for us, long, long, before I was born. They were slaves. Then, emancipation happened ( before USA, and US civil war ), and the local whites expected riots. But, nothing. After coming out their barricades to investigate, they found the ex-slaves at the church, thanking God for their freedom. ( So the story goes. ).
Since then, They took our culture? Yes. We took some of their's? Yes.
But their are truly different to the real African. I can diversify with these people...

Blogger Seeingsights March 09, 2019 12:29 PM

I'm contemplating the economic costs to Jussie Smolet. Not only are there legal costs--such as attorney fees and loss of income/assets due to the legal punishment--but this will adversely effect his acting career.
He will have much less acting roles in the future.
I looked at the IMBD page for Kevin Spacey. Before the sexual misconduct allegations made against him, he was basically employed year round for many years. After the allegations, his employment as an actor dropped, I would say, at least 75 percent.
My quick guess is that Smollett will lose at least 5 million in future income.
I would not be surprised, if, a few years from now Smollett is listed in articles about actors we do not hear about anymore.

In a roundabout indirect way, I have some connections with the Chicago PD, and they are ROYALLY pissed about the Smollett contretemps. These guys are under so much pressure given the Ferguson crap and the anarchy on the West and South sides.

Smollet's high profile was a huge distraction and his surrounding media circus forced then to marshal resources and waste time they didn't have.
