A Shakespearean drama

A British Monarch watcher believes Prince William is now the power behind the throne:
Harry's announcement of a glitzy TV series with Oprah Winfrey and Apple appears to have been enough to spur his brother William into action.

The heir to the throne seems to have spent a lifetime patching things up for his younger brother, but has finally run out of patience. (The role of Harry's PR Sara Latham in spreading rumors about William's marriage was probably a factor as well.)

It was William's decision to send Harry and Meghan away, the Times of London story made clear, even though the person who probably should have been taking charge of the situation was his father, Prince Charles.

Charles has supposedly been running daily operations since his father Philip's formal retirement in 2017, Philip having long been the power behind the throne for the Queen. But Charles has been making a hash of things, before, during, and after Harry and Meghan's wedding. His mother doesn't respect him, and neither do his sons. Charles seems to be a likeable old goat who is fun at a party, but he doesn't have the spine or the occasional cruelty required for the big job.

If this Africa banishment is remembered a few decades from now, like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor's exile to the Bahamas, it will probably be remembered as the time when William came into his own.

William appears to be a bit of a Shakespearean figure at the moment: he never wanted the job of King, having seen the pressures of royalty contribute to the death of his mother. Yet now he's been forced to take it on to avoid further damage to the monarchy, pushing aside his father and sending his once-beloved brother away.
It's a good start. Now do Brexit!

Looks like posing with Africans in a display of Eat Pray Virtue-Signal is about the limit of Sparkles' skill anyway. And frankly, Harry seems pretty useless too.

Not that I suspect William is based enough in any meaningful way to be much of an improvement of any kind, though.

@2 Agree.

The same article writes:

Along with a baby bump that resembled a basketball at 12 weeks and then grew and then shrunk and then grew and then shrunk again for the next five months, there are plenty of reasons to believe Meg is having her child by surrogate, if there is a child at all.

This suspicious baby story isn't good for the family business, which relies on the affection, forbearance, and taxes of the British people.

Harry made a subpar choice for a spouse, but he has to stick to it.

The former chief architect/engineer of Notre Dame Cathedral says the fire is "incomprehensible."
'We installed a new detection system in 2010, and completely rewired the cathedral, so the fire wasn't caused by an electrical short-circuit'

"No work on the Notre Dame roof frame had begun when the fire broke out".
"The scaffolding was under construction, to be 'delivered in mid-July' and 'no work on the frame had yet begun.'"

Here is an extract from a Winston Churchill speech given to the St George Society on St. George's Day 1935...

"The worst difficulties from which we suffer do not come from without. They come from within. They do not come from the cottages of the wage – earners. They come from a peculiar type of brainy people always found in our country, who, if they add something to its culture, take much from its strength.

Our difficulties come from the mood of unwarrantable self-abasement into which we have been cast by a powerful section of our own intellectuals. They come from the acceptance of defeatist doctrines by a large proportion of our politicians. But what have they to offer but vague internationalism, a squalid materialism, and the promise of impossible Utopias.

Nothing can save Britain if she will not save herself."

Happy St. George's Day.

Bit of a Royal watcher here. Charles is most comfortable running his properties. I understand he actually makes money off them. He doesn't have the aptitude for the throne because he already loves his job.

With Harry and Meghan... well you can't expect much when you marry an American escort. In her case I think it's her unwillingness to do as Romans do in Rome, preferring instead to think she's on a permanent press tour complete with calling the paps and arranging a baby shower in America so she can receive gifts. So gauche. She's becoming quite the embarrassment. Sending the couple away is a great decision. They need to understand it's not about them.

Looking back at Wills and Harry now. Wills was always more even-keeled.

See enty/cdan for more info.

Harry is incapable of raising so much as a fist. He won't even stand up to his whore of a wife.
A younger brother of the heir apparent has two jobs, to keep his dirt out of the papers and make his brother look good. Harry has only managed the latter. There will be so much drama when Meghan files for divorce with a huge press conference and all her celebrity friends weeping for her suffering on camera.

Harry, after all, dressed as a high-ranking Nazi for a costume party. Yes, it was a party, but the optics were bad, much like what Harry has done all his life when not under strict control.

William has learned from Elizabeth and Phillip about gentility, grace and noblesse oblige.

As to Meghan? I don't expect the marriage to last longer than 5 years, 7 years tops. Harry is too much a child, and so is Meghan.

Blogger freddie_mac April 23, 2019 5:20 PM

@47 Can a surrogate baby wear the crown of England?

Harry's DNA is all that matters. If the child in question has his wife's DNA, then however the child arrived, he/she would probably be counted as legitimate. Given how much the harridan wants to trade on being part of the BRF, I'm sure that she'll squash any rumors that the child is illegitimate. With all the rumors that have surrounded Harry's own parentage, I don't understand why he'd put a child through such trauma.

Since changes to the succession, the line is now: Charles, William, George, George's children; Charlotte, Charlotte's children; Louis, Louis's children, and then Harry, Harry's children. So, baring natural disaster, cataclysm and zombies, Harry's children are nearly irrelevant.

@52 She is to blame, but some things have already been done that can't easily be undone. Parliament has weakened any future monarch already, QEII signed away her ability to dissolve parliament and call a general election in 2011. Doing absolutely nothing during Brexit has set a bad precedent for future monarchs.

She did at least refuse to let parliament take away her war powers 20 years ago though, so there's that. I would much rather have had her be the one that tried to exercise power than Charles.

Then there's the awkward matter of succession not automatically granting the next monarch all of the previous monarch's powers. That's so esoteric that I have barely any knowledge about it.

Blogger Stg58/Animal Mother April 23, 2019 9:02 PM

Restrictions on the power of a legitimate, strong and noble king beloved by Britons are merely words on paper.

Blogger linesy April 24, 2019 2:00 AM

We have long suspected that Harry takes a little bit after his father, which we have long suspected to be Major James Hewitt.

William is, by anecdote, quite some high functioning individual. If we must have a monarch, it has to be him.

I was a republican, but age has mellowed me and I recognise that in the real world, the Royal Family are a fact of life and even though we would never create them now, we wouldn't seek to destroy them either. I just wish they would stand up for the British people more. It's difficult though because they are handcuffed by historical precedent and being well educated they respect this a lot. I would suggest that seeing as parliament is lost, that this changes.

Harry and his wife are a very negative influence and are causing embarrassment. I don't really follow the day today stuff, but when he announced his engagement I saw one news report and all I have said to other people on the matter is that he was being led by the nose. I am sympathetic to him because he lost his mother when young, likely heard all the conspiracies and was no doubt aware he is just 'the spare'. There are any number of younger, undivorced and more suitable wives for him. Who on earth set him up for this outcome?

Anonymous Anonymous April 24, 2019 5:18 AM

@2: I don't think Harry is one of them. He doesn't look like Charles at all but are a spitting image of Diana's bodyguard which she did have an affair with. This explains why Wiliam married an upper-class good girl while Harry married a mixed-raced American whore. They got to spit the British people in the face without sacrificing anything. Imagine having to say "your majesty" to a woman who've amongst other things have simulated blowjobs on the TV.

@29 'William refused to meet with President Trump when he visited, so I'm not optimistic."

On the other hand, it would likely be improper for the SECOND in line to the throne after Charles, no matter how correctly raised to be the next King, to meet with a foreign head of state at this point! If, as seems possible, William IS hoping, planning, intending, being groomed?, to 'save' Britain -- he may be 'observing' the boundaries pro forma until he ... well, let's look at an analogy: until he comes down that escalator at the precisely right time and announces his 'candidacy'... having already formed the coalitions needed to keep him alive and possibly successful in saving his country.

Not particularly a Royal-watcher but William seems to have a good grasp of the duties -- and I hope -- powers that come with his future job. Charles did NOT want to play that game (any more than his youngest brother... can't even think of his name; not 'Randy Andy' but the youngest boy, who married an appropriately British lovely young woman and seems mostly to have disappeared from the scene! Ah, Edward.

Blogger Avalanche April 24, 2019 8:50 AM

@47 'Can a surrogate baby wear the crown of England?"

As venal as I feel Markhal is, it's unlikely she could succeed in killing off all these -- so Prince Harry and any future children even comes close in line:

Prince Charles, Prince of Wales (1948), eldest son of HM Queen Elizabeth II
Prince William of Wales (1982), elder son of Prince Charles
Prince George of Cambridge (b 2013), son of Prince William
Princess Charlotte of Cambridge (b. 2015) , daughter of Prince William
Prince Louis of Cambridge (b. 2018), , son of Prince William

and any other children William and Kate throw in future. I wouldn't be surprised too, if it ever CAME to Harry possibly being next-in-line, there were calls for DNA testing to move him OUT of the line entirely as not actually related tot he royal family
