"Conservative" is a "sensibility"

That's literally the title of George Will's new book, The Conservative Sensibility, which in the 2019 post-American, post-Christian USA is less relevant than a book about the Manchu invasion of China:
Government needs to get back to basics. The political class, defined broadly to include persons actively engaged in electoral politics and policymaking along with those who report and comment on civic life, is more united by a class characteristic than it is divided by philosophic differences. The characteristic is a tendency to overestimate the importance of public policies, from which the political class derives its sense of importance. This is especially so regarding economic and social inequalities. These, the political class tends to believe, are largely the result of public policies and are therefore susceptible to decisive amelioration by better government actions. In the argument about which is primary, nature or nurture, the former receives an emphatic affirmation from the Founding Fathers’ philosophy. Beneath the myriad patinas of culture, there is a fixed human nature that neither improves nor regresses. What does change for the better is the capacity of certain portions of humanity to improve the legal, institutional and social structures for coping with the constants of human nature. And to do so without diluting America’s foundational commitment to take its bearings from the individual.
I used to admire George Will. Now, I marvel at his utter and complete cluelessness in the face of the conquest of the Land of the Free and the fearful, submissive state of a people who once considered themselves to be the Brave.

In Cuckservative, I told you that conservatism is not an ideology or a political philosophy, it's just an attitude and a pose. Perhaps those who could not accept that reality coming from me will accept it from this leading conservative figure.

Will used to write better.

Will just confessed that their is one team with two jerseys.

there is a fixed human nature that neither improves nor regresses
Over seventy years old and doesn't understand neither the nature and effects of sin nor racial genetics (by the latter I mean the genetic roots of temperament and race).

This sh*t would not have made me a Conservative; it would have made me a cynic.

My first impressions were after reading that passage is if I were a leftist it gives me plenty of ammo to blast Will with, but since Will is a stooge who exists to legitimize the Left and to punch right he will be allowed to act important on TV, for now.

And on the other hand after reading it for the third time I am LMAO, nature over nurture and certain portions, the damn man is a comic genius.

Berkeley Breathed once did a single panel editorial on him. Opus' belly read: "George Will eats herring heads!" Even a hippie can be right, once a year.

After a third reading with more caffeine, all I can conclude is that George had some badly smoked kippers. That summed up to "Government needs to get back to basics, but the basics aren't what the Founders used as basics. This squirrel sings opera in pickle range."

How?

Will omits the most basic foundation , God and offers the Swamp...or Codevilla's Ruling Class as the means to return to our founding sensibilities.

Will is either peddlying more of the same boob bait or he is serious.

Good riddance.

Blogger Quilp June 01, 2019 8:34 AM

At first this me think of Lionel Trilling quote regarding conservatism, but I do not believe Will is of the same "capacity" as he would put it.

"What does change for the better is the capacity of certain portions of humanity to improve the legal, institutional and social structures for coping with the constants of human nature" - Will is the one George has been waiting for? Or is he claiming the earlier mentioned political classes have that capacity?

I have to say it's a bit strange to read him after so long and look for, but not see, the inevitable historical reference from 1838 that Will believes brings him argument together- just so!

Ok, found the metric.

"Many contemporary ethicists, however, believe that inequalities of wealth that are produced by exceptional individual productivity rising from exceptional natural aptitudes do not deserve society’s deference or protection. The more that science establishes genetic bases for differences of aptitudes and even of attitudes and desires, the more pressure there will be for government actions to remedy the unfairness of life’s lottery."

If the conservative sensibility prioritized the wisdom of our ancestors, conserving their heritage, that would have value. But 2016 showed that it's all about appearances, being seen as respectable, especially by the media, and being associated (or not) with the correct people. That's *still* one of the main narratives being pushed on conservatives: Trump did thing today; you don't want to be associated with thing, do you?

Blogger Derrick Bonsell June 01, 2019 9:19 AM

I'd have more respect for NeverTrumpers if they admitted they were more aligned with liberals than with conservatives.

I used to be a Conservative-- until I realized it was backward-looking, faux-nostalgic conservation of an ever-moving position, which conserved nothing, and wasted energy which could be otherwise better spent.

In that sense, the Voxiverse of products, books, rubble-bouncing, digital options and thinking outside & ahead of the box is a truer manifestation of real hope & deep trust in almighty God-- far moreso than semi-participating in the horrid revolution by bemoaning the current moment.

No wonder the ankle-biters, shills, narrative-lovers and others can't stand you, Vox. Like Aslan, you are on the move.

"In Cuckservative, I told you that conservatism is not an ideology or a political philosophy, it's just an attitude and a pose. "

The problem is not "conservatism," mainly because, as Mises tried to explain to us, "conservatism" is always relative to the social changes being driven by the "liberals" in a society, so of course it is not a coherent "ideology."

The problem is that guys like Geo Will are the demon infested winged monkey servants of the Satanic globalists. He is a shill for the Banksters whose "ideology" is a doctrine of demons descended from the writings of cretins like Adam Weishaupt and the Marquis de Sade. Will is not trying to express a coherent worldview, he is only shucking and jiving and trying to manipulate people by baffling us all with his bullshit.
When I think of a practical expression of political "conservative" ideas, I think Pat Buchanan, not George "Winged Monkey" Will.

Foolishly, I did what I always do when a writer writes dense prose. I started diagramming-out the sentences.

I soon realized it was a waste of time. The man says very little.

His wordiness is doubtless a result of a “paid by the word” book.

Worse, he is either an idiot or a liar; either he is too dull to see what is and has been going on for 70+yrs, (despite having swallowed whole atleast one thesaurus) or he's balding lying to his reader's face; trying to keep his readers on the path of genocide, political then physical.

I don't care which. It doesn't matter which.
Just look! See the truth of Conservatism! See the moral and intellectual emptiness of Conservatives!

But the destination is still the same.

sammibandit, a Swede is a type of turnip. Let's see: covered in manure, left in the cold and dark, then harvested? Yeah, that works.

Let's see about a vocabulary match for the correct answer: "As in the days of Cato the Elder and Scipio Africanus, the solution becomes obvious upon inspection. Immolate the entirety first. Thoroughly and rigorously perform an extensive saline cultivation next. This should obviate the source of onerous insult for generations to come."

I, too, used to have a certain respect for Will - back in the mid '80s. Besides being verbose, tendentious, and trite, this is utterly dishonest. "Beneath the myriad patinas of culture, there is a fixed human nature that neither improves nor regresses." Merely a fancier way of proclaiming that "Family values don't stop at the Rio Grande." Culture is downstream from genetics, yet Will terms it a mere surface coloration underneath which we all want the same things - another Bushism, I believe. Yeah, the Mohammedan wants to take all your stuff (including your nation) and enslave you. The sub-Saharan wants you to give him all your stuff, enslave you through guilt and laws, and debase all your women. The pajeets want to impress you by memorizing a list of words and winning the spelling bee, and the Han want to smile, pretend to be a model minority, and rule the world via sheer numbers, immigration, and a deep-seated belief in the superiority of their race and its culture. Silly me, fooled by that mere "patina," I just want to be left alone to live and think as I please and act accordingly.

The Conservative party leader of Canada made an important immigration campaign speech last week. He is driving away the Christian Canadian nationalists because he filled it with equalitarianism of all ethnics, all religions and quad-sexes. He only attempted differentiation from the Liberal Party with the sensibility of his judgment, not a crumb of anything else: "Canada's best interest", integration, give services to these immigrants who "all share our conservative values", choose numbers and do fairness queuing. If anybody is studying Canada's extreme globohomo politics, here is the speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2f6dzh9gaWQ

The National Spelling Bee didn't have a winner this year, rather it was declared an eight-way tie and participation trophies were handed out to all. Probably the most expensive participation reward ever as each of the eight co-champions was awarded the $50,000 top prize. Got to wonder what the ninth place kid and parents think about this.

After 20 rounds, the announcer said, “We do have plenty of words remaining on our list. But we will soon run out of words that will possibly challenge you, the most phenomenal collection of super-spellers in the history of this competition.” Considering in past years, multiple contestants have crashed out on such softballs as segue, parity and ennui, his assertion seemed dubious.

Likewise. As a young man, I thought his vocabulary and prose to be an armament of reason. Then I realized how often he trained his arrows and he either missed the mark or hit inconsequential targets. He was exhibit one in the hall of conservatives, i.e, typewriter warriors who made fine livings conserving nothing. He never seemed to grasp that he was the token opposition on all those Sunday morning political shows.

Now that I am not the captive of local newspapers, or later a periodical that assembled "conservative" opinion pieces, I realize his writing isn't prescient, it is pretentious.

Comparing him to-among others-Father George Rutler (who doesn't suffer from the disabling nihilism of being a "low voltage" atheist who has nothing to look forward to when his time here is over); is like comparing the best pitcher on your high school team to a Cy Young award winner.
