Get the story straight, guys

Newsflash: "THE US said tonight that Iran was behind the "torpedo attack" on an American-linked oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman. Both the Front Altair and the Panama-flagged Kokuka Courageous - which was reportedly bombed - burst into flames and were forced to evacuate in the troubled region this morning."

Newsflash: " An unexploded device, believed to be a limpet mine, was spotted on the side of one of two oil tankers attacked on Thursday in the Gulf of Oman, a U.S. official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity."

It's going to be a little awkward if that limpet mine turns out to be of US or Israeli manufacture.

UPDATE: Even the Pentagon and the US Navy don't buy it.

"We have no interest in engaging in a new conflict in the Middle East,” CENTCOM added. “We will defend our interests, but a war with Iran is not in our strategic interest, nor in the best interest of the international community.”

If it's a US or Israeli mine, we will never find out. More likely it's a Soviet or Russian mine. The CIA is not stupid enough to use an American mine.

Maybe the template was corrupt when they re-used the one with "torpedo" and "gulf" dating from the early sixties. That one worked out fine. For Uncle Ho.

Blogger swiftfoxmark2 June 13, 2019 4:45 PM

A mine makes more sense. There's less people involved who could spill the beans on a false flag operation.

But the Iranians are clever enough to make it look that way, or so TPTB will tell us.

Blogger S. Thermite June 13, 2019 5:19 PM

I wasn’t buying the “torpedo attack” when I heard the story this morning, and was thinking false flag with either time-delayed naval mines or frogmen placing limpet mines. Guessing most here had similar thoughts.

The whole notion of a couple of Iranian torpedoes is absurd. What would they gain by such piddling "attacks" other than handing the US/Israel viable justification for war? If they were really in it to win it, the Persian Gulf would be afire from end to end.

If you're a neighbor of Iran with a grudge, you might want to convince the Americans to flatter Iran. After all, the Brits suckered us into replacing the Iranian government for them in 1953. Of course, that didn't work out for the Brits.

Blogger Johnny June 13, 2019 7:12 PM

Given the number of players I doubt it was American, but who knows. I take a small amount of solace in the fact that if we go to war against Iran, at least it isn't Russia. A war against Russia would be potentially much more damaging.

Unlike Iraq, the Iranians are a people, not a geographic territory assembled by outsiders. Even if we win a war the place isn't going to fall apart, and occupying it would be even crazier that the stuff we have been doing recently.

If life were fair, the people who are instigating this stuff would be hung by a hook until they were dead.

Blogger ASH June 13, 2019 7:16 PM

The elite team of frogpeople (not men, sexist!) come back to shore off the RHIB and debrief the operation.

CO- "Good job folks, all devices were placed and armed. Now we just need to remotely detonate."

Elite Frog #5 "Hoad up! What?"

CO- "Elite Frog Shaniqua, question?"

EF #5 "Dey said 'arm it' and I thought dey meant just swim with it in de arm. I fo'sho' didn't press no button on mine's mines."

CO- (concerned look) "So you didn't arm the device?"

EF #5 "Well, I used mah arm an' shit when I stuck it on de boat! Dey ain't cover dat in academy, dey just passed me in de armin' and swimmin' classes"

This is your future USG, reap it.

For years, every time the price of oil would start to slip, the Mad Mullahs of Tehran would rattle their scimitars and drive it up a little. Certainly, this is going to bump up oil a little. On the other hand, this is also going to make it a lot harder to get a tanker to load their oil. I'm sure many insurance contracts for tankers on that route just got canceled.

Of the several oil producing states that might have benefited from this, Iran probably benefited least. The Saudis probably benefited most.

Lets give the CIA credit is due even if credit is disgusting. You are always locked into doing what available resources allow for. I doubt the torpedo thing, but who knows, if it was them, then maybe that was what they could manage.

Do the Israelis even manufacture mines? - I thought Uncle Sam supplied them with most things.

Israeli engineers have design some great military technology, some of which the US uses. They’re also great at reverse-engineering...I’m reminded of a story of the Mossad scheming to obtain French Exocet missile electronics through a third party back in the day because the French wouldn’t sell to Israel directly for that reason. By comparison limpet mines are ancient technology. A backwoods hobbyist could build one, and with access to proper machine tools could probably counterfeit whatever the Iranians use.

@29 In boot camp, all the white guys were in the deep end of the pool, being familiarized with swimming with gear on. Every last black man was in the shallow end of the pool learning how not to utterly drown in anything over their head, no gear on. Gulf conflict boosts the price of oil.
It always has. Good for oil producers desperate for cash.

Look at above chart. Crude shoots up for Iraq insurgency, down after surge.
Up for ISIS, down after their defeat.
Now sharp spike on 13 June.

You’re being very Amero-Centric here: the USA is not in control of all violence (or evil if you prefer) anymore than we are the center of goodness and truth. Iran acted in it’s State interests economically and diplomatically - diplomacy without force is like music without the instruments.

When we bomb say Serbia or North Vietnam to the table we do the same thing.

This is Iran’s gunboat diplomacy.
