Links in the comments

Please note that this site is not a message board. No one is asking you to bring anything to everyone's attention. And if it is on the Drudge Report or IG News, then you can safely assume that everyone here has already seen it. Now please stop posting off-topic links in the comments or I will tell the moderators to delete all links posted there.

Thanks. Nothing is more annoying then these "Breaking News" characters. Too bad other places don't ban them.

Blogger Phelps June 27, 2019 11:26 AM

Agreed. Get your own blog, build your own audience, and stop leeching off other producers.

Blogger Xiety June 27, 2019 11:40 AM

Thanks. And well said, Phelps.

Over the years, I've emailed Vox quite a few links I thought were topical. A smaller few have appeared on the blog soon after, which I presume may be due to my submission. I believe every email I send is noted in some way regardless of outcome.

I have been guilty of the rare OT link in the past, but I will be mindful of this warning for the future.

Can I assume OT and adding to the discussion is still acceptable?
It's usually from a road less traveled.

If it adds to the discussion, how is it OT?

This ban on OT links is because those do not add to but detract from the discussion.

The spirit of the rule being to stay on topic. There should be something about every link that it is on topic. If you're starting from, "this is OT ..." then don't. Save it for a post where it is on topic.

Sorry - I had comment using 'on-topic' which I lost when we entered a 3G in traveling.
When we got back to 4G, I tried to short cut on-topic to OT - brain fart.

That one's already answered then.

Vox: "... please stop posting off-topic links"

If he wanted to ban all links, he would have said all links. On-topic links are obviously not forbidden and thus allowed.

Links by themselves don't add to the discussion though, so do describe why your on-topic link is relevant to the discussion.

Can I assume OT and adding to the discussion is still acceptable?

No. The whole point is for people to stop posting OT links.

Blogger Crush Limbraw June 27, 2019 2:39 PM

In my case, the links are from my archive-library - collected in the last 4 years from various sources to provide in-depth input on different topics. I find it useful when looking for 'something I read but can't recall where......' - it's word searchable and I use it every day.

Blogger Crush Limbraw June 27, 2019 2:41 PM

As explained above - I erred in proper designation of the abbreviation - sorry!

Blogger Mark Stoval June 27, 2019 3:57 PM

Amen to staying on topic, and apologies for those times I myself have violated good manners.

I would like to say that a thread every other week or so that was "open mike night" might be fun. Have some oddball thing to share with the ilk? Wait till an open topic thread.

Of course, it might drive the moderators nuts. There is that.

Blogger Latigo3 June 27, 2019 4:04 PM

Shows you my age, for a long time I always thought OT meant Old Testament.

Blogger Jack Ward June 27, 2019 4:09 PM

@13. Mark Stoval

I think, open mic day, should go moderated. We can stand it for one posting. The give and take can go much quicker that way. Might even get to annoy some idiots the moderators might not let through. I've noticed that there have been some postings lately that have not been moderated. OK, now and again.

Blogger Jack Ward June 27, 2019 4:10 PM

My last; that should be UNmoderated...good grief, and all.

Blogger sammibandit June 27, 2019 4:35 PM

Agreed, Mark. I also don't like making work for people who have better things to do with their time.

Blogger Brick Hardslab June 27, 2019 7:02 PM

Last time we had open comments with no tiles it was a train wreck. I think there were a thousand comments in that thread.

Blogger Brick Hardslab June 27, 2019 7:03 PM

Rules! No rules!

Blogger Michael June 27, 2019 7:11 PM

IG News?

Blogger JovianStorm June 27, 2019 8:46 PM

Have an open thread once a week that's deleted after 24 hours.

Our Bacchanalia, so to speak.
