Vertigo is dead

And Literally Who killed it. I blame GamerGate.
DC Comics announced that Vertigo Comics will be extinct beginning in 2020. They specifically note “DC will sunset the Vertigo publishing imprint at the end of the year.”

The news confirms rumors about the imprint being shut down from earlier this month.

In a press release, DC Comics announced they will be restructuring their comic book division under three labels: DC Kids, DC, and DC Black Label. These changes are expected to go into effect in 2020.
My guess is that IDW will be the next to go.

The more they destroy their own businesses, the more opportunities appear for us.

I remember when Sandman was a breath of fresh air, something different in a sea of sameness. It triggered a burst of creativity.

Then there quickly developed a new orthodoxy of murky art, impenetrable plots, and pseudo-intellectual posturing in the place of action.

Vertigo was choked by its own success almost right after it was born. Good riddance.

This décision merely reinforces my choice not to read mainstream English comics and stick to the European ones. Mainstream English comics since the late 80 onwards frankly are off-putting as well dull and downright bizarre at times.
However since crowdsourcing has introduced me to many interesting comics and both Castalia House and Alterna comics publish titles thhat interest me i'll give them a try.

Another franchise, same epitaph: "Get Woke, go broke."

Imagine the frustration of SJWs & the Woke when their War on Reality doesn't work. Banging your head on the wall doesn't work either, but usually people stop before brains start leaking out.

The only answer: if China-style "social credit" officially comes to the West, you will get points for an enforced buying of such garbage comics, books, movies, and the like. Customer choice is clearly bigoted hate, in current year.

Looks like the goal of being the number 3 comic publisher will be achieved ahead of schedule and under budget.

I'll pay a buck for all their properties and then sign it over so Banner Sergeant Kevo-Grod can slash and smash them.

IDW were the geniuses that introduced gay and transgender Transformers in their comics, after all.

And no, I'm not joking.

Some of the latest headlines suggest that Needy Sarkeesian's coffers are growing thin too.

I'm all for the collapse of these converged comic companies. But I hope at some point the DC characters will be used again in legit stories.

The degree of corporate destruction wrought by these people will hopefully be a lesson to all future intelligent lifeforms.

@13 "Needy Sarkeesian's coffers are growing thin too"..

Jeremy @ the Quartering has been covering the fall of the Gamergate grifter girl. Her last big try was an attempted shakedown of the Cyberpunk 2077 game company, for "Consulting". Now, actual job?

I think of Vertigo Comics the same way I think of Chi-Chi's.

I loved it in college but then I developed good taste.

This is actually pretty sensible. Which means Warner Brothers isn't taking their IP for granted like Disney is.

I've got the feeling that Disney thinks Marvel is too big to fail.

Warner Brothers seems to be acting like they think they are vulnerable. Which they are.

Fifteen years ago the TV show, Entourage was allowed to use Aquaman for a fake movie in their story-line because everyone knew Aquaman was a joke of a superhero and no one would ever make money off of him.

Aquaman actually outperformed Captain Marvel.

Wonder Woman didn't do that well but it was a much better movie than Captain Marvel.

The reason for that was simple, Diana came across as an actual woman rather than I guy with tits.

There was one scene that really sold her for me. She was in WWI era London and she spotted a baby for the first time in her two thousand years of life and her reaction was, "Oh! A Ba-beeee!" In THAT tone of voice. And Trevor immediately grabbed her arm and started dragging her away saying, "no! No! We do NOT have time for this!"

That was just a little bit of humanity that Marvel movies can't seem to do anymore. I am certain Brie Larson would have shit a brick if she had had to do a scene like that.

And how furious would the SJWs have been if Captain Marvel had had a love interest?

Marvel is becoming the IBM of the superhero genre. They are too big and too successful and too over-committed to change with a changing market.

Blogger JAG June 23, 2019 8:58 PM

Marvel Comics has already failed if you judge by the units shipped metric. It's around 10% of what it was in the 1990s when the industry crashed. Those same numbers that were called a crash would be used to justify switching to an SJW agenda if they could manage them today. Nearly every Marvel title today would have long ago been cancelled in the 90s. They would be lucky to run two or three titles.

Marvel wishes they were IBM. IBM just failed to grow. They are still around and still a multiple billion dollar company. IBM stuck to their core business and served them well. If Marvel did that we wouldn't be talking about comics dying

More simply: She's hit the wall hard and now that she's no longer pretty-ish no one wants to listen to her. A sad part of the equalism movement is that women don't acknowledge how powerful their beauty is and thus can't cash out while the going's good.

"IDW were the geniuses that introduced gay and transgender Transformers in their comics, after all.

Putting the "Trans" in Transformers? (sorry)

As for IBM, some of it is inertia to some extent. Though I may be wrong overall, their customer service has slid from what I have seen due to outsourcing (I felt like a project manager trying to get three different teams of theirs to work together on an issue - IBM OS, DB2, and another IBM application on IBM hardware. Not sure if it was only one or all that were outsourced but there was no coordination without me making phone calls in to support). Maybe it varies for suites they intend to continue with (their market share has dropped off in the area I have dealt with for nearly two decades).
