Next up: Slavery Story Hour

Seriously, who do these deranged librarians think they are fooling with their faux "freedom of speech" posturing?
A Warren County library wanted to do something to mark the occasion, so it enlisted a New Jersey drag queen to read a story to children. But they never got the chance. “Drag Queen Story Hour” has become an increasingly popular event for libraries, schools and bookstores to hold, though not always without controversy. So when the northeast branch of the Warren County Library System scheduled one for June 15, some questions and comments were expected.

They did not expect two straight days of phone calls clogging the lines and demanding the event be cancelled. Or for a usually dry library commission meeting to meet with similar, in-person resistance. The library commission, apparently caught by surprise at their May meeting, cancelled the Drag Queen Story Hour....

"I feel like we didn't serve a portion of our community that deserves it, especially during pride month," said Sandy Roberts, who works in the county library system and posted public messages on Facebook critical of the decision to cancel the story hour.

"I think that's quashing freedom of speech and giving in to bigotry,” she said. “I'm OK if people have differences of opinion, but we're a public space.”
As I have repeatedly pointed out, there is no such thing as freedom of speech. There is zero point zero chance that Ms Roberts would support a Make Slavery Great Again Story Hour. The only genuine question is who is enforcing the blasphemy laws.

The public library is a function of the local government, and the government does not have freedom of speech rights under the Constitution. And by giving in to the mass protests of the local populace they have in fact honored the original purpose of constitutional freedom of speech: the freedom to criticize government for wrong actions.

As Vox Hass noted, the SJW'S are terrified of normal Americans and cannot effectively deal with any resistance. Just imagine how ineffective they will be in the face of an offensive directed at them. Their only tool is to cry "raciss!" or "(insert perversion)-phobe" and hope you run away like cuckservatives do. Instead, bring the pain.

Blogger Zaklog the Great July 02, 2019 8:49 AM

@9 gunner451 If a Muslim objects, we must respect their culture. If a Christian objects, he's just a hateful hating hater, and we have to do it even harder to teach him a lesson.

Vox, when you talk about bringing back Christian blasphemy laws, are you trying to influence the short term or the long-term after whatever catastrophe/civil war is coming? Because if you're talking about short term, not only does that not appear to be on the table, it's not even in the same room as the table. In fact, it's in a building in a completely different city than the table we're referring to . . . lost in a dusty filing cabinet.

"but we're a public space"

This is so dumb. A public space is the *last* place you can afford to let everyone do whatever he wants, because that would ruin it for everyone. I was at a city park for a reunion on Sunday. The park has rules about clothing, alcohol, pets, and a bunch of other things, precisely because common standards are necessary to make sure it can serve as many members of the public who pay for it as possible.

They're trying to normalize pedophilia by packaging it with transgenderism to confuse the issue. If a normal-looking, single, 40-year-old man volunteered to let kids sit on his lap and read books to them, everyone's alarms would go off and they'd turn him down. But have him dress up as Glenda the Good Witch and get a couple lesbians to bring their adopted kids in rainbow clothes to sit in front of him for a picture, and suddenly it's a rights issue and people can't see the obvious anymore. Or maybe they can. This news is heartening.

Public libraries are a mistake.
It's just a funding vacuum that promotes anti Christian ideas.

Blogger Amy July 02, 2019 9:15 AM

I’m at ground zero for this. The uproar from the NPCs is predictable and rote. But the parents who protested are not backing down. We fund the county libraries, in part, with our local taxes, and we have a say in how the libraries use their space. Period.

It was heartening to see this development, because if your local Love Wins Soccer Mom can get riled up about protecting her kids from this, the scales have started to fall from eyes.

People I never once believed would have said Boo! about this showed up to log their protest. It’s a healthy start, a sign we are ready to prune the dead branches

“Give in to bigotry” story hour. Because Freedom of speech. And a portion of the community supports it.

It would be selected readings from all US Presidents before JFK (but including Johnson, of course). The stories will primarily be read from Lincoln, because SJW tears.

you notice the similarity to the NFL lying about how it doesn't want to interfere with the 'free speech rights' of the players.

the NFL has been quite open and forthright about fining players for saying things, wearing unauthorized hand printed statements ( the Funky QB ) and "inappropriate" end zone celebrations since the 1980s.

but now they pretend that they "can't" enforce behavioral rules.

As I have repeatedly pointed out, there is no such thing as freedom of speech. There is zero point zero chance that Ms Roberts would support a Make Slavery Great Again Story Hour. The only genuine question is who is enforcing the blasphemy laws.

The existence of all sorts of "common sense" laws that regulate speech in the name of defining permissible boundaries on "free speech" means that no one actually believes speech should simply be free. Everyone agrees with the idea of blasphemies being prosecuted.

Related to why I said Zippy Catholic was one of the few bloggers who could go toe to toe with Vox, he observed this when Vox was still a libertarian:

liberalism has an additional feature, the unprincipled exception (a concept explored in some depth at Lawrence Auster's blog View from the Right), which prevents it from immediately self-destructing.

Illiberal principles are not permitted to assert explicit authority in the liberal order. But because liberalism is incoherent and ultimately self-destructive, something has to keep things from falling apart: something has to assert a stabilizing authority in order to hold things together. This thing, this assertion of illiberal authority which is not permitted to be explicit but which nevertheless has effect, is the unprincipled exception. Unprincipled exceptions are often asserted as an appeal to common sense, an assertion that to take things to the rational next step clearly demanded by liberal principles is "silly", etc. But unprincipled exceptions are never permitted to explicitly challenge liberalism itself. They exist to dampen the advance of liberalism enough to keep it from self-destructing. As a form of parasite liberalism is incapable of existing on its own, and unprincipled exceptions, originally vestiges of the moral core of Christendom rendered mute but still in effect through appeals to common sense or some other euphemism tantamount to "shut up", have been what has kept liberalism - ultimately an authoritative assertion of the illegitimacy of authority, which is the same as asserting the free and equal superman - in power.

I'm familiar with the area. The library is located in Hackettstown, NJ, a Republican town in a largely rural Republican county in western NJ. There is a sizable Hispanic minority in Hackettstown, but I think that there would be even less support for Drag Queen Hour among them than among Whites.

There are plenty of places in NJ where the local Whites virtue-signaling fashionable views would think that this is a great idea.

Blogger Bellomy July 02, 2019 10:27 AM

This is my county. They must have thought they were safe since it's NJ, but they miscalculated. Warren County is one of the only red counties in the state.

I was relieved when it was cancelled. I really don't want to stop using my local library. It's very convenient.

Blogger Whitecloak July 02, 2019 10:28 AM

@26 Sounds like librarian shitlibbery, then. Small town leftists often signal even harder than their big city brethren for they feel they have far more to prove. "I'm not one of those awful kulaks, I promise! Look how much I hate them!"

Blogger Amy July 02, 2019 10:30 AM

I do not homeschool (disagreement with husband, he wants them in school system. Maybe pray for me in that regard, please). So, since they are in the public system, I keep tabs on everything that goes on. But schools do not send home much homework (fine enough, get it done in school), or notices or information about assemblies, programs, presentations, projects, lessons, topics, or executive means of communicating knowledge.

My fear: my local Warren County NJ school will host a Drag Queen Story Hour with little to zero notice. Kind of like a pop-up event to surprise the kids with something fun.

The lack of transparency from schools about the “special” programs and assemblies they offer is appalling. I remember being in Catholic high school in the 90s, having an HIV+ guy come in and talk to us about his experiences. No one told my parents (I was 14). My dad was kinda a little bit more than pissed about it.

This stuff is slow erosion, no one notices until suddenly a whole riverbank is gone.

Sodomites are vampires. They are sterile. Genetic dead-ends. They cannot form normal bonds or procreate after nature’s laws, so they prey upon the weak, innocent, and vulnerable, to make more like them. It’s the only way they can reproduce and find pleasure.

They fool lots of people. Once the shock value wears off, a lot of conservatives will start using the free speech argument as a rationalization themselves. I see no real political leadership against this either. It's something Trump would do well to tweet about. Tweeting out this video would be a good start. But given that Trump tweeted in celebration of sodomy month this year (he conspicuously ignored it last year), I'm not holding my breath.

@28 Whitecloak -- "Sounds like librarian shitlibbery, then"

Word from a liberrian I knew.. apparently most of them & their union are utterly radicalized/ converged. Beware of whom your school or local public libraries hire.. could be a wolf in sheep's clothing, or worse, as with the Trans Story Time facilitators.

Also, keep an eye on recent purchases to your local or school libraries, and purchase & donate GOOD books, where possible ("dedicated in memory of" sometimes helps). Every book can change a life, for better or worse.

If you've got a good librarian who somehow predates or survived the crazy-making, work with them to ditch garbage and boost quality, getting in only sensible books that boost the good, the true, the beautiful, adventure, real learning, and 'corrective' content.

@27 - Unfortunately, Warren County is represented in Congress by Josh Gottheimer, a Jewish millionaire friend of the Clintons who lives in suburbia. I wonder what he thinks about Drag Queen Hour. Used to have good guy Republican Scott Garrett.

@28 - I agree.

Conservatives having been saying for I don't know how long that liberal Whites feel "guilty" and are "self-hating." Please. These people don't feel guilty about anything - quite the contrary, they're moral peacocks who love to parade their fashionable views and denigrate Whites who disagree. It's an easy way to feel good about themselves at no personal cost, no personal sacrifice. Support for trannies and drag queens is the latest fashionable cause.

Blogger Amy July 02, 2019 10:53 AM

@pyrrhus, I remember my grade school librarian. It was a Catholic school, so I assumed the lay teachers and staff had a similar view on life.

The librarian insisted upon being called Ms. xxx, her maiden name, because she was not her husband’s property.

She wouldn’t let me check out books that were considered beyond my grade level (my reading level was many years beyond my “grade”). My mom and dad gave me stuff to read instead.

Librarians have a function, but gate keeping is not one of them.

Blogger pyrrhus July 02, 2019 11:00 AM

@36, 37 At heart, most librarians are Puritans, who want to scold and regulate all those around them, and disapprove of fun in any form except as prescribed by authority.

Time to build your own personal library: attend estate sales and yard sales, library sales where they sell the unwoke books, and buy books at used bookstores: the bookstore owner knows where all the top used book sales are; buy a set of encyclopedias. "My thought for doing this was basically to acknowledge Pride Month. I thought a story hour would be as innocuous a thing as we could do," said Adam Petroski, manager of the northeast branch in Independence Township, just outside of Hackettstown.

Bringing in an adult tranny to read degenerate books to 4 year olds is the most innocuous thing you could think of?

This was the most radical thing she could think of. Sticking a gay flag in the window is innocuous, a flaming tranny is not. She needs to be fired and made an example of. The people who inundated the board with phone calls need to be demanding she and anyone else involved be fired. This fear of being fired is what keeps normal people from standing up to something. They need a healthy dose of this fear.

As was already mentioned, the government doesn't have free speech rights. When they do it, it is state propaganda.

Every year, school librarians push a list of banned books, none of which were ever banned. It's a contrived collection of books that have been challenged, removed from ONE single library, or simply not bought for circulation. The purpose of it is to make us all aware of the specter of censorship. Meanwhile, merely EXPLAINING the Christian Gospel in its historical contexts is considered a violation of the 1st Amendment.

If libraries are public spaces, they must give equal weight to the Christian Gospel.

Blogger tublecane July 02, 2019 6:26 PM

@15- My experience of public libraries is they're one-third old people reading newspapers, one-third people using free computers/Wi-Fi, and one-third babysitting service. That's ignoring the bum/drifter element.

Theoretically it would be possible to acquire culture in one, but most of the material is mainstream pop trash.

Here's my satirical Performance Art response to DQSH:
What the world needs now is Boy-Lover Story Hour, in which a man in a toga comes out and sits down quietly and decently and tells the kids stories from the Bible and Homer. THAT's what the library ought to be supporting!
Kids: Line up on the LEFT to get sodomized and get your genitals cut off by freaks; line up on the Right to dress up as heroes and get in play-fights with swords, learn how and when and why to trade in the heroic ethos for the Christian ethos, to trade in the selfish, anything goes sexual ethic for becoming proper husbands and wives, and inherit the cultural traditions of Western Civ. FREE CHOICE!!!
