The false dawn

SJWs can be excused if they erroneously believe all is well with the Devil Mouse:
Hear Disney roar.

On Sunday, Hollywood's alpha studio announced its films have collected a record-shattering $7.67 billion at the 2019 global box office — and it's not even August.

The previous industry record of $7.61 billion was set by Disney in 2016.

The $7.67 billion figure includes $5.09 billion amassed overseas. It's the first time any Hollywood studio has surpassed the $5 billion threshold internationally.

Already this year, three Disney titles have crossed $1 billion worldwide, not to mention that Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame ($2.79 billion) has surpassed Avatar to become the top-grossing film of all time. Fellow Marvel pic Captain Marvel finished its run with $1.23 billion.

Disney's live-action Aladdin rode its magic carpet past the $1 billion mark last week, while The Lion King is on the verge of achieving the milestone after finishing Sunday with a worldwide total of $962.7 million after just two weeks in release.

And don't forget Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 4, which is likely to top $1 billion in the coming weeks. If so, Disney will set a new high-water mark for the number of $1 billion-plus films released in a given year (it set the current record in 2016 with four).

Disney accounts for as much as 45 percent of the $16 billion-plus collected worldwide so far this year by movies released on more than 1,000 screens, including revenue from titles inherited following the Disney-Fox merger. In stark contrast, the next closest studio, Warner Bros., has taken in just shy of $2 billion.
The devil, so to speak, is in the details. Devil Mouse movies are doing very well on a superficial level, but the Great Rat is rapidly devouring its seed corn and riding on the inertia of its past successes. It probably has one more good year in it before the numbers begin to turn south and the rapid decline begins.

They are booting up the woke marvel line of movies now, They will have live action remade all of their most popular films from the 90s by the end of next year, they have thoroughly ruined Star Wars and put the final nail in the coffin at the end of this year. Their trajectory is straight down after next year. I wouldn't be surprised if the first "shocking" flops start rattling out of the marvel universe early next year.

Blogger LR27 July 29, 2019 8:21 AM

Crisis, two year put bets are really cheap on these companies. $40 against Disney will get you $6,000 if Disney fully collapses within two years. Not super likely, but it’s not much risk given we know very little about what specifically will happen in the collapse and when.

Blogger Sargent.matrim July 29, 2019 8:23 AM

That decline can't come fast enough.

On a positive note I went with family and friends to go see the new independently made animated pilgrims progress on Sunday arvo.

It was fantastic, powerful and a delightful change.

More of that sort of thing will be good.

Disney has extracted nearly 8 billion dollars from the economy. You could build a wall across the entire southern border for that much, but instead it goes to fuel the appetites of the Devilmouse cabal. Entertainment is not productive and I become more and more disappointed upon seeing how unnecessarily large the budgets are getting, knowing full well that at least half of that is tax fraud.

Blogger KPKinSunnyPhiladelphia July 29, 2019 9:18 AM

As with most top line revenue numbers, you have to look behind the numbers to determine the messages they are sending (something I did in my career).

To wit:

--Milking franchises: Toy Story, Aladdin, The Lion King, are capitalizing on feel-good nostalgia, as VD has noted. What will replace them? Anything on the horizon? Crickets.

--Growth by Acquisition -- Always a tell, particularly with a single industry vector. Acquisitions only work, and often rarely, in only these instances: (1) to achieve scale via vertical integration or elimination of duplicate function, or both; (2) to grow revenue by adding different but flanking products to the portfolio. Neither apply in the Disney-Fox merger, which was done as a rearguard action to address Netflix's dominance.

It's August 1941 for the Disney Hitlerites. Victory seems so easy, and so inevitable. But the Winter is coming, and it will be very very cold.

The other longer term factor here is that childless millennial women are a huge chunk of Disney's revenue currently. It is currently socially acceptable for these women to act like children because they are still young and fertile. In the next 5-10 years that dynamic is going to disappear. Mockery will start to flood in on the 40 something women that go to Disney movies and parks without children. That will peel a huge part of that group away from publicly supporting Disney. Some of them might still manage to have children which will give them an excuse but for many of them the clock is running out.

Blogger D E K July 29, 2019 9:33 AM

Even if the revenues will decline, I think that the international market with China&Co. has put Disney on such a different level that they don't care about people who dislike a black mermaid. They essentially can put out crap after crap and there are still millions who are willingly watching it. The influx of dumb/don't care viewers to their audience surpasses people who are fed up. I used to watch many movies in a year. Granted my interests may have changed and a darkstream is nowadays far more interesting to me than it would be 20 years ago, but the quality of movie scripts, the amount of interesting plots, creative ideas has gone down massively. It is impossible to find a good comedy through political correctness. Hollywood has hardly any pulse left, dead man walking...alas there are more people worldwide interested in such a Zombie than ever before.

Blogger Unknown July 29, 2019 9:39 AM

@1 I'm not sure it will be quite that fast. Disney was really good at manipulating the numbers for Captain Wokeness with sold-out showings producing half empty theaters. Most sources I've seen suspect Disney purchased several tickets per showing to prevent the truth from coming out: that there was, at best, mediocre interest in the movie and that the movie and the leading actress were terrible.

Blogger FUBARwest July 29, 2019 9:44 AM

Disney is dead, the live action remakes are dying, and Marvel has dies but doesn't know it yet. How long can shorting a company last?

Blogger Garuna July 29, 2019 9:44 AM

It's disgusting how Disney has defiled Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar. Star Wars and Pixar have already started bombing from time to time. Marvel should too soon as Phase Woke begins.

I don't even wanna talk about all the cartoon -> live-action shit. But they might be overreaching next year with The BLACKED Mermaid and Mulan. BLACKED Mermaid is already pissing off many liberals. Whereas Mulan is a not-very-successful cartoon that is being injected with even more of the feminist disease..

I've heard they're switching the dynamic between Mulan and her boyfriend. While in the cartoon, the boyfriend was the tough soldier who trained the physically weak Mulan, who had to learn to use her brains to make up for her lack of brawns. In the live-action movie, the hero will be a twink and Mulan will be the STRONK WAMMAN kung-fu fighter who will teach him and other weak men how to fight.

Every girl I've told about this dynamic switch despises it.

Snow White is the most allegorical of the Disney movies, with Snow being a stand-in for innocence.

It is also the most anti-feminist, with a very passive "heroine".

The woke version of that will be a travesty and a rather fitting bookend to this age.

Blogger swiftfoxmark2 July 29, 2019 9:47 AM

We've seen this pattern before. Some big institution is going up in the world and it looks like there is no top.

Inevitably, there is and depending on how hard they hit the top usually indicates how hard they fall.

D E K wrote:They essentially can put out crap after crap and there are still millions who are willingly watching it. The influx of dumb/don't care viewers to their audience surpasses people who are fed up.

Except that the new dumb/don't care viewers are even more fickle than the fed up audience, so the curve for diminishing returns is now even worse for Disney than it was before.

Foreign markets are like immigrants, neither are the economic panacea that we've been told they are for decades.

Yeah, everything about that one has to change. She can't be white, obviously. The evil queen can't be a spinster and can't hate Snow White for her beauty. She can't be saved by a prince and the dwarves can't be traditional dwarves.

So, there's an evil king with bright orange hair, who meets a smart black girl named Snow White and falls for her because she destroys him with banter, but she rejects his offers of marriage because she's going into STEM and says it's her destiny to cure cancer. The king sends her a poisoned apple, but she analyzes it in her lab and knows not to eat it. Her foolish boyfriend, a nerdy white soyboy, eats it while she's not looking and falls into a coma. She has to infiltrate the evil king's stronghold with a multicultural group of seven snarky thieves to steal the antidote. She cures her boyfriend with it and then dumps him because she's fallen in love with one of the girl thieves, and they go get matching tattoos together.

I noticed they stopped recently adding the production cost numbers for some movies to boxofficemojo.com. Movies like Cpt. Marvel and Black Panther are touted as major box office successes but there's no way to check they made a profit in the first place.

Aladdin made >1 billion in total: $346mil domestic + $663mil foreign. The production cost was $183mil and it is said by people in the know that the marketing for a movie costs just about the same meaning a total cost of $366mil. Considering these numbers and the fact the studios get 60% of a ticket from a domestic theater and 40% from a foreign theater (high estimates) we have: $206mil domestic + $265mil foreign. This makes only for $100mil profit which is a lot but nowhere near 1 billion.

If we use a low estimate of 60% domestic + 20% foreign (I doubt China would give anything more) then the movie actually breaks even.

If we divide the domestic number with the average ticket price in the US (~10$) we can safely conclude 34mil people saw the Aladdin movie. That's about 10% of the US population. What does this mean? Basically Hollywood has to successfully market a product for one tenth of the US population in order to make any profit at all.

I'm highly optimistic because what these numbers tell me is that 9/10 americans aren't buying Pedowood's shit.

Blogger Steve Sky July 29, 2019 10:12 AM

@13 flyingtiger. That's an interesting belief, given Walt Disney was a 33 degree mason, and the Club 33 is one of the secret sites that people are not allowed in.

It was the biggest movie-related cash-cow ever, and they allowed it to be tortured, then ritually sacrificed in public. Star Wars.

A built-in audience of 5-55, massive ongoing toy & merch sales, conventions & LARPing and video games and... and after the recent film debacles and actors & directors & such mocking the fandom online, and ruining the movies and... the new Star Wars DisneyLand park is nearly empty. The new lines of toys are remaindered into discount stores almost as soon as they are released, and this crash even helped kill Toys-R-Us.

They slew the cash cow. Cooked the Golden Goose. Punched all the fandom in the nads, and then laughed their sneering faces off. The woketards they've been pandering to are not the true fans, whose money kept the thing going all these years. Nope, most of the fandom is done.

For Satan is a mocker, a twister, a mutilator, a defiler. Disney has separated itself from the Muses, from the Holy Ghost, from deep-rooted stories-- and even biological reality-- in order to tell lies & woke tales, and to cheerfully wreck things that men & kids love.

Like Satan, the 2019 DevilMouse can only feed; he cannot make anything true, good, holy, beautiful, inspiring, especially not anything that points to The Greatest Story Ever Told, about a Prince who died for his slaves, whose name means The Anointed Saviour, even Jesus Christ The Lord & King of All.

Screw DevilMouse, and the desolate kingdom of Lies & predation.

Disney needs a strong competitor and I don't see one on the stage. It's sad, but true.

In marketing, being first is a very strong advantage. But it is not invincible as CNN/Xerox demonstrated.

Pedos go where the kids are and anyone with any sense knows this. How could a convicted pedophile pass a background check unless Disney just doesn't care about the safety of their child talent, or worse, is infested with pedos and that's the whole point? No wonder their mascot is a rat.

In my humble opinion, all of popular culture has been going downhill ever faster since the 50s at least.

We have reached a point now where when one hears people talk of Lucifer being the driving force behind the Evil Mouse it does not sound crazy at all. It sounds like the reality I see.

Western civilization, at least in the USA, is done. I am sure that the faster we break the USA beast apart the better off we will be. I hope it can be done peacefully, but I am afraid it will involve a lot of blood.

Agree. Bigtime movie buff since being a toddler, and now could not care less about going to theater.

It's not just about growing older, either. My Dad died at 60 in early 90's, but still enjoyed movies coming out at that time. I can't see him wasting his time or money on anything released in the past decade.

It was initially a hard pill to swallow to give up going to the movies.

Hollywood has hardly any pulse left, dead man walking...

Indeed, and the Gen Zyklons in my house see it, so don't despair too deeply about the masses giving Woke Mouse their money.

For example, among my teen son's favorite movies are the originals of Twelve Angry Men and The Day the Earth Stood Still. Those are the yardsticks he measures the modern dreck against, and the new stuff fails miserably.

We watched Alita: Battle Angel last night as a family. So different from anything the Access Media and MSM are telling us we are supposed to like. It actually had a story to tell and told it effectively.

Thanks. Yes, we are aware of that. My daughter is a manga fan and she's looking into the original.

We were interested in seeing the movie partly because it was held in juxtaposition to Captain Marvel earlier this year, not because we thought it was some representative of an original story.

That said, as a long time movie fan who has been disappointed by Hollyweird's output for well over a decade, I found the story-telling and general approach in Alita refreshing.

As I watched, I found myself really enjoying a "New Release" which has become by far the exception rather than the rule for a very, very long time.

If only there were more alternatives that came from a director with an actual vision. Like him or hate him Tarintino is one of maybe 10 directors in hollywood who make unique movies.

His foot fetish makes watching parts of his latest disturbing but it's a well made film and judging by the previews it's the last movie most people will go to the theaters to see in a while that isnt a Mouse house production.

Woke Charlie's Angel's
Woke Stripper Robbers movie
Woke movie about Black cop killers on the run
Woke 70's movie about women crime bosses
Degenerate sex comedy involving 6th grade boys

And then The King's Man.

Until Rebel's Run Tarintino and his ilk like Nolan are your only hope.

If you're looking for the next crop of story tellers then look at the homeschoolers - particularly the ones in Charlotte Mason/Great Books traditions. Some of these kids are already out there, and many more are being raised on the fairy tales and stories that fed the early days of Disney. I'll admit that some of them are being raised by cuckservative moms who wring their hands over things like 1800's American history, but given that they're also being raised on books and stories important to heritage Americans and Western culture I have hope that reality will assert itself as these kids grow older.

Not everyone is eating the seed corn. A fair few are planting it.

It is telling that neither Tarantino nor Christopher Nolan are Jewish.

I've only moderately enjoyed Tarantino films, but Christopher Nolan is my absolute favorite director. He's easily the greatest director of our generation. Most of his movies have genuine heroes rather than anti-heroes made to subvert Western culture. And that fact he doesn't ever pointlessly add Diversity is notable.

Blogger Solon July 29, 2019 1:35 PM

Not even that. The last guy was a slightly overweight middle-class man who just wanted to convict because he didn't want to be stuck in that overwhelmingly hot deliberation room for three days. He was a caricature for Middle America: lazy, uneducated, overweight, didn't care about the politics and just wanted the kid thrown to the wolves like the ebul nazee he is so he could get back home and catch the ball game and have a beer.

It was only through the intervention of the smart, liberal, old man that the other eleven jurors could be enlightened on why the kid was innocent, just imagine the horror if more benevolent minds had not prevailed!

One thing is for sure, back in the black and white days, the propaganda had to be a lot more subtle. Not like today's films, where they have all the subtlety of a naked homosexual slapping you in the face with a neon pink dildo.

@38 and 44:

At issue is not the thematic messages, but the quality of the writing and film making.

One can disagree with the deeper themes of Twelve Angry Men and acknowledge that in terms of execution of that story and theme, it was a far, far superior movie than anything being produced now.
