Why not a Little Old Mermaid?

Considering that Disney is already making Ariel the Little Black Mermaid:
Halle Bailey, 19, got a flood of online congratulations on her casting as Ariel in a live-action remake of Disney's The Little Mermaid. But some of the warm feelings were a bit misdirected, as several online commentators hilariously mistook her for Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry, 52.

Berry herself wrote: 'In case you needed a reminder... Halles get it DONE. Congratulations @chloexhalle on this amazing opportunity, we can’t wait to see what you do! #TheLittleMermaid #HalleBailey'.
They might as well gone with Halle Berry. They've gone straight from blackwashing A Wrinkle in Time Bomb to The Little Mermaid, almost certainly with similarly dismal results. The hatred of Disney for all things European is so marked, I'm surprised that they haven't completely replaced the very Germanic architecture of the Disneyland parks yet. All in due time, I suppose. But all this incessant Hollywood blackwashing just makes me want to remake Roots with a Chinese cast.

But back to the Little Black Mermaid.... at least this remake should provide some interesting new plot twists if Ariel is illegitimate and doesn't know who her father is.

I wonder who will prove to be more popular, Little Black Mermaid or Little Black Irongirl? Every day is Wakanda day.

UPDATE: Amazon is not looking any better.
Amazon's Lord of the Rings series is bringing Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom filmmaker J.A.  Bayona to Middle-earth. Bayona will direct the first two episodes of the fantasy series based on J. R. R. Tolkien's novels, and he will serve as an executive producer, alongside partner Belén Atienza.
Ye cats.... Although I suppose it could have been a lot worse. It could have been Spielberg. Or shudder J.J. Abrams. It should be downright fascinating to see the gay black elves and pretty blonde orcs.

UPDATE: In fairness, from the SJW perspective, a remake was absolutely necessary. Because problematic.
I watched the original with my wife literally this week and it was the first time I'd seen it in about 25 or so years and, wow, it is very, very bad. There's a lot of cleaning up to do.

UPDATE: What positive impact?
On social media, thousands praised the decision and the positive impact 19-year-old Bailey's casting could have on 'young black girls'.
A bunch of young black girls thinking they can be mermaids... it's not exactly a mystery how this could go horribly wrong, given how black Americans are not, on average, what one would tend to describe as famous for their swimming abilities.

I have to wonder if Disney really thinks that all this anti-white propaganda is not going to backfire (blackfire?) with the younger kids. The kids I teach make fun of all this sort of stuff.

Last year many of the boys were claiming to be "gender fluid" to great laughter by the rest of the class.

I also wonder if Disney realizes that you can't make inner city blacks appear to be anything but what they are. There was a time when black comedians would talk about black people vs n#ggers.

I am beginning to think "WOKE" means "STUPID".

Blogger Gregory the Tall July 04, 2019 7:04 AM

The Shakespeare Company now routinely has black actors on stage, and not only for Othello. Okay, I support the right of black actors to play historically white characters from Shakespeare plays, but by the same logic I support the rights of white and Chinese actors to play African slaves and Mexican cartel members in today's movies! Hey, it's art and it's all part of Brecht's "estrangement effect".

That one was never show again unlike the 60's version with Leslie Ann Warren.

Someday people will look back and wonder why there are so few movies surviving from this era. The answer is that Hollywood spent the last decade or two remaking and rebooting every popular script they could get their claws on, and most of them were forgotten by the time they left the theaters if they weren't outright hated. Someday people will watch classics like Predator and Robocop with no knowledge that the 201x versions ever existed.

Blogger Gregory the Tall July 04, 2019 9:00 AM

In the meantime Hollywood will come up with Snowblack (notice the inversion - snow used to be white back when I was young) and the seven dwarves (with 6 black actors and Owen Benjamin returning to Hollywood on a one-off mission as the seventh). And of course Little Black Ridinghood, the girl who does not know who her dad and her grandpa are and therefore immediately accepts the Big Black Wolf as a father figure. Turns out he is actually quite nice, not very hungry, just lonely which is why he only wants sex from her.

I talked to my 85yo mother recently about the ever quickening decent into depravity in the USA. I asked her if she had a theory on the reason.

She said that a big part of the reason is that children are not exposed to stories, fairy tales, shows, movies, and so forth that teach morality. She named some stories she learned as a girl in rural Tennessee, and the moral that each one taught. Then she said family bible reading is a thing of the past also.

Disney seems to be leading the way in making sure that children never learn morality.

The other 50% is boilerplate musical "get me out of this small town and away from my overbearing parents who know better than me because I'm an idiot" and gross sexualization. Sexiness that I picked up on when I first saw the movie at 5 years of age or whatever.

Blogger sammibandit July 04, 2019 11:38 AM

The Disney version was already pozzed, and the anime version is more accurate to the story.

The Disney version entirely edited out that the mermaid being a beast had no name and had no soul. The HCA original has the mermaid totally out of sorts for not having a soul after she sees humans for the first time. Going to the Sea Witch for dark magick to try and get a soul she uses the Prince's as collateral. At the end the mermaid dies rather than kill the prince. HCA was apparently made to edit in the part about her turning into a bubble for 300 years helping people so she can earn a soul.

Disney never cared about the pagan or Christian aspects of the story, nor the stringent warning against using magick.

@62- Yeah, there really isn't a moral to the Diznee Little Mermaid story. Though we know it's wrong to have trusted the Sea Witch, Ariel gets shielded from the consequences of her decision for no reason.

The original Christian Anderson story has a happy ending where she is miraculously saved, as I recall. She has the choice to kill the Prince to regain mermaid status but declines out of True Love or whatever. Then she becomes an angel or something with the chance to earn her way into heaven through good works. Which is of course far too "problematic."

Stories these days have a moral framework, but it's usually SJW schoolmarm-type. Which is shallow and boring, and I almost prefer nihilistic despair. The moral aspect of old stories is devastating and vertiginous and exhilarating. As if choices actually matter.

The live action version of Cinderella was actually good. There, I said it and I'll stand by it. It wasn't really a remake, it was a retelling of Cinderella using tropes established in the classic Walt Disney animated feature. By itself it was good movie.

Unfortunately, it was the start of something awful. And the Disney movie going zombies can't tell how bad these live action remakes are getting!

Even the critics figured out that Aladdin sucked and Will Smith was clearly just there to collect a paycheck. But that POS had made 800 million world wide.

Honestly forget race-bent Little Mermaid, it's the Lion King that is going to be truly awful.

Here’s the really sad thing. 2D animation has a timeless quality to it that 3D simply does not. Take a look at Toy Story or The Incredibles, today. While cutting edge in their day, the CG is so badly dated that it takes you right out of the story.

Here's an example Rafiki. The hand drawn one looks friendly and full of kind hearted wisdom. If you met him you'd give him a hug by way of saying, "hello" and you can tell he would happily return it.

The CGI one on the left doesn't' look friendly at all, he looks like a goddamn baboon and you know if you try to hug him he will eat your f4$king face off!

I strongly suspect that Lion King is going to be the one that augers in the Disney live action films.

"Look for the new version of the Little Mermaid to be available exclusively on Disney Plus!"

Some of those original versions were pretty gory, if I recall.

I think Disney left out how the mermaid, I can't bring myself to call her a jew name, felt like she was walking on glass every step she took in human form. The effects of using magick were readily apparent in the original story: nothing magickal is done without commensurate pain. Instead, Disney sexualized her changing into a human with that gross scene with her on the beach in a net. You're absolutely right to say the mermaid is shielded from the consequences of her actions and that's a literary tragedy. It removes the whole point of the story. Beasts cannot be human (without self-sacrifice), beasts cannot attempt to be human without going through pain and suffering as humans do.

The end of the story was meant to be with the mermaid turning into sea foam. I prefer it but HCA's editor wanted a more Christian ending. I don't expect people who aren't hardcore fans of his to know that but once you do it shows how the ending with the ability to earn a soul is really ham-fisted in there.

Your last point about old stories is really en pointe. I almost think some of his stories aren't appropriate for young kids at all, like Little Match Stick Girl or The Snow Queen, the latter also bastardized by Disney in Frozen.

I wonder who will prove to be more popular, Little Black Mermaid or Little Black Irongirl

My strongest objection to IronHeart is that she is such a weak and flimsy character.

Credit where it's due, in Stan Lee's day, the man behind the mask always came first. His characters weren't just a collection of superpowers, there was always a driving force that moved them.

Peter Parker, had all the standard nerd problems but he also had a sanctuary with Uncle Ben and Aunt May. It was the only really good thing in his life.

When he got his Spidey powers he used them to make a lot of money as a pro-wrestler. One night he has a chances to stop a random thug and laughs it off. He comes home to find that his house has been broken into and his Uncle Ben has been murdered. He tracks the killer down and discovers to his horror it's the random thug he could have stopped earlier and did not.

Because of that, Peter Parker will always be reminded of his moral failure every time he sees Aunt May... Without Uncle Ben.

This is what Peter means when he says, "with great power comes, great responsibility." It's what drives him to be a hero everyday of his life.

Irongirl on the other hand is nothing but an exercise in entitlement and a lazily constructed one at that.

I'd heard a quick description on line of her origin story and it goes like this: "Little girl dreams of being a superhero. Her best friend is murdered. Little girl becomes a superhero.

This is not a story. It the same thing as Little boy wants to be a Fireman. His best friend dies in a fire. Little boy becomes a fireman."

And that guy was right. Little girl dreams of being a supervillain. Her best friend is murdered by a supervillain. Little girl becomes a superhero...

… Is a story.

Something you won't find at Marvel these days.

My big question is this. Had IronHeart's protagonist been a White boy instead of a Black girl, would they have seen just how weak of a character she really is?

Exactly, exactly. And her sisters had to cut off their hair to get a magick knife. I always imagined that as particularly difficult for them as though they're beasts they're Danish beasts and Danes love their hair.

I believe you're correct about the Grimm's Cinderella. Most of those stories were sanitized as well. Not entirely without good reason. I don't think it's appropriate for kids to read about rapist wolves or tree fellers, for example.

HCA has a theme in some of his stories about magick being evil and nothing but evil. As in formal logic you can't get a true conclusion from a false premise, you can't get good results from starting with magick.

Oh, but Sammi; that's WHERE the downfall of our civilization begins! That's WHY those early 'fairy tales' sometimes ended in slaughter and loss -- but also in making it through and carrying on in life. The reason the originals seem so gory and shocking to us overprotected moderns is that the world they lived in WAS terribly dangerous and actually HAD rapists and wolves and evil men with axes. Children protected and shielded from knowing there is horror 'out there' -- and not learning to know it, expect it, and do what is right -- don't learn it's a big bad wolf (world) out there, so they can learn to manage their fears.

She behaved so foolishly in the first few comics that it easily could have ended up collapsing all around her and contributing to some much needed character growth. But then, the writer may not have realized she behaves as a villain.

I'm going to have to disagree. I grew up hearing WWII civilian reports, absolutely ghastly reports. It screwed me up. How I grew up in this light is nothing like being cut from a team or bitten by a dog. It's nightmare fuel.

Growing up hearing about firebombing, death marches, people dying next to you in a cattle car is no way to grow up. I agree with our host.

VD wrote:the basic gist is that he's claiming the former (folklore, the OT, and middle ages literature) is barbaric and uncouth, while the latter (post-enlightenment literature) is much more beneficial for children.

That's not correct. He's simply attempting to excise the darker aspects from the earlier literature without throwing it out altogether. It has nothing to do with post-Enlightenment literature.

One would look dimly on a selection of Old Testament stories for children that focused on nothing but murder, rape, masturbation, and genocide, after all.

Imagine the fun we would have with projects like Roots remake with a Chinese cast.

why not? coolies built the railroads in the western US.

in other Blackwashing Films news, Jacob's Ladder is being remade. with a black lead.

the trailer makes it look like everyone attacking the lead character is a honky.

i'm simply shocked and amazed.

Now Owen HAS to play the Chinaman. It’s his destiny.

((( Paul Muni ))) was playing Chinese leads back 1937, Wang Lung in The Good Earth.

if an Austrian Jew can be Chinese, why not Owen?

India! Let's make Malcolm X, Roots and Schindlers list in India.

more blacks were exported as slaves to India than to the US. it's just that most of those shipped to the Indies were castrated.

"Many were captives of Tippu Tib, a notorious Arab slave trader and ivory merchant. Tib led huge expeditions, some 4,000 strong, into the African interior, where chiefs sold him their villagers for next to nothing. These Tib used to caravan ivory back to Zanzibar, then sold them in the slave market for large profits. In time Tib became one of the wealthiest men in Zanzibar, the owner of multiple plantations and 10,000 slaves"

Tippu Tib lived from 1832-1905.

Why would they deprive themselves of the opportunity to use red hair? The hair is like 50% of her character. Think of the poor posters.

California outlawed discrimination based on hair yesterday. I guess Disney is just conformin'

A bunch of young black girls thinking they can be mermaids... it's not exactly a mystery how this could go horribly wrong, given how black Americans are not, on average, what one would tend to describe as famous for their swimming abilities.

The new blackstory... I mean backstory... for the Mermaid kingdom - they were slaves thrown overboard during the Middle Passage who landed on top of a pile of vibranium one the sea floor that transformed them all into mermaids.

Blogger Pax_Romana July 04, 2019 3:14 PM

Much like how nature is slowly breeding us gingers out of existence, Hollywood wants to hasten the process. I remember a lot of ginger girls really loving Ariel - heck, I did, and I'm a ginger boy. We're only 1% of the population, so we don't expect much...but they took away MJ and they took away Ariel.

Disney Delenda Est.

"The original Christian Anderson story has a happy ending where she is miraculously saved, as I recall. She has the choice to kill the Prince to regain mermaid status but declines out of True Love or whatever. Then she becomes an angel or something with the chance to earn her way into heaven through good works. Which is of course far too "problematic.""

No, in the original she does refuse to murder the prince, but her body is disintegrated into foam to float on the sea for eternity. No soul for the beast, this is the happiest ending she got.

If I recall, didn't the mermaid experience knife-like pain when she walked on her magic legs? There are both moral and physical costs to using magick, both of which Disney eliminated. Come to think of it, didn't the Brothers Grimm version of Cinderella have the evil stepsisters cutting off part of their feet to fit in the glass slipper? Some of those original versions were pretty gory, if I recall.

Correct on both counts. In the mermaid's case it's because she literally chopped her tail off and is walking on a stump of her spine. In the stepsisters' case they cut off their toes and still couldn't fit.

In either Sleeping Beauty or Cinderella (forget which), they put the evil stepmother figure in iron slippers heated red hot to force her to "dance" at the wedding.

"Growing up hearing about firebombing, death marches, people dying next to you in a cattle car is no way to grow up. I agree with our host."

Emotionally I agree. Intellectually I should point out that it puts a certain "spine" into people that we are sore lacking. There is a time to protect kids when they're too young to comprehend the concordant lessons, and a time to teach them how the world really is, because they're able to understand and need to know. The things that need to be changed are glorification or detail in either the violence or sexual perversions, and the consequences should be emphasized.

Give them milk when they need it, vegetables when they can bear them. Meat eventually becomes a necessity in most climes, though it weighs the heaviest.

Blogger SPQRCincinnatus July 04, 2019 4:11 PM

I have saved no less than 3 black people from downing. I shit you not. In two instances I did not even get a "thank you" or even a vague sense of appreciation. Next time I may hesitate. Never seen anyone other than blacks drowning. They would literally jump in the water, flail around, and they couldn't come up for air. It's almost a metaphor.

Fairy tales were often written for adults. HCA is no exception. You don't give a small child a spine by traumatizing them. That's how you give them nightmares and trust issues.

Speaking of swimming...I live on the banks of a large reservoir. Lots of boaters. But, you can rarely see a negro in a boat.

They are found fishing from the banks at the spillway, shoulder to shoulder. As I once told a friend, "they aren't fishing; it's grocery shopping.

HCA wrote mostly for kids, there are exceptions like The Shadow, but they are not being discussed here. Regarding the Little Mermaid he oscillated between a full tragedy and miraculous semi-happy seemingly from the inception, and in any case
the story has a valuable message regardless of the ending: just the fact that you feel romatic love does not guarantee you a ticket to jump between worlds, in fact you can sacrifice everything to pursue a crush out of your league and still gain nothing. Which, of course, the Disney version had completely inversed.

In any case, what's with the idea that kids can be traumatized by not, you know, detailed description of a serial killer's work or war atrocities, but by fairy-tale level violence, and not even on screen (I do distinctly remember some kid-unfriendly animation that scares me to this day, but impacting emotions with written world is quite a bit harder)? Are modern American children really sheltered to the degree that, say, bad endings with moral lessons like "don't trust your ancestral enemies" (remembering Grimm fairy tales) are considered too tough to handle?

@93

Typical school life will give a child more mental hardening than any books can hope to by 13. I do not believe that American schools are on average better that what I had to deal with given the constant complaints about ethnic gangs in them.

Better than ROOTS, do a story on the Barbary Coast pirates who enslaved hundreds of thousands of Europeans! Don't forget the word SLAVE is derived from "Slav";who were European in nature.

They need to make a sequel to the Black Cauldron, where historical figures and fictional heroes are resurrected as Cauldron-Born. But instead of being reborn mute or undead, they come out darker skinned. And obviously, The Horned King would be the good guy this time.
